Friday afternoon continues with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s five fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Once again, Sergio Aguero is the clear leader in our poll. After bagging a brace in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Villa, the Argentine has collected over 56% of the votes cast ahead of a trip to a Norwich side that’s shipped 12 goals in their last four at Carrow Road.

Somewhat surprisingly, Harry Kane has been earmarked by just 20% for a trip to Villa. The Tottenham frontman has netted four times in his last quartet of road trips and is now up against a dire defence that’s conceded 15 times in four and have one foot in the Championship.

Below that duo, Riyad Mahrez (7%) and Jamie Vardy (5%) are shaping us as major armband differentials for Leicester’s home encounter with a Newcastle outfit that’s lost six on the bounce away from home. Whilst Vardy has struggled for returns of late, with a goal and assist in five, Mahrez has stepped up his consistency and produced points in five of the last seven Gameweeks, including an 11-point haul at Watford last time out.

Beyond them, the likes of Josh King, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen, David Silva and Dele Alli are have the potential to spring a surprise, with 2% or less backing so far.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

If Rooney's out of the Euros, I'd take Kane, Vardy, Welbeck and Defoe.

    Is Sturridge worth taking?

Yes, over both Welbeck and Defoe.

At least they'll last a game without getting injured 🙂

Hehe, true. Sturridge has the biggest upside of them all, though. He'd be immense to have as an impact sub.

      Deeney over Defoe/Welbeck for me.

Probably, if he finds some form.

Sturridge is the best striker of the lot. You cant leave him just for fear of injury

With so many games in such a short time I fear Sturridge is too much of a liability. If he can keep his fitness and form between now and the end of the season, then he's worth consideration. But there's no point taking someone who will likely only last 2 games.

Charlie Austin and Berahino are other good options, not in a form point of view but in a quality point of view no doubt.

I think Austin just suited QPR's system tbh.

Berahino has an attitude problem, maybe he'll be ready for World Cup qualification.

I think Austin is a great striker for his style and he can score goals if he has good support by his collegues.

Kane and Vardy are obvious, Sturridge I wouldn´t take him because he is too risky in injuries, so maybe Deeney or Defoe.

Welbeck's England form is sheer madness. Scores the most goals in Euro qualification out of any player and then some games he looks like they have just thrown on a random kid for the heck of it. Clueless. I'd take Vardy, Kane and Strurridge. They've got to be the most reliable out of the five. Defore is a great player to bring to the Euros though. I'd be tempted if I was Roy.

Whilst i remember....I forgot to answer last week to the person who asked why I "spunk*d" my WC....So to whoever it was....

For the past three seasons I have played my own little game of taking a hit a week on avg (38 hits per season) and finishing wherever I can....For the first two seasons of that we only had a "Jan wildcard" so to keep my game even I needed to get rid of this years in the same time frame. I'm currently saving up hits for DGW's (sheesh).

It's my own little game i announce long before the season starts, as summer posters will testify..not some sort of balls up.

Oh was it you...yeah, it was the only chance I had to catch DGW's with the "Not Jan WC".

Out of interest I first did it when my son was becoming bored with the game four years ago...I had my team of all the Belgians at the time, so to keep his interest up we decided we'd both do a hit a week. I quite liked it so carried on.

the hit a week idea i really like tbh and if u were doing a league of any kind i would be up for it.. iv made 45 transfers already this season and that is a lot less than i previous seasons..

          1. Dr Dream
            • 13 Years

I always ask if anybody wants to do a league of it. Some people are quite keen by the end of the season, mainly the ones who ahd a bad season, but by August I think they prefer to start a regular game with their new start.

It'd really good if you wanted to do it.

Best short-term option to replace Payet for next 2 weeks (need to use one of 2FTs)?

    a.) Silva
    b.) Eriksen
    c.) Shaqiri

    Already have Siggy & Alli.

2FT this week. Used one to get Siggy in for Willian last night so I have 10 playing now.

If I want 11 tomorrow then I have to get rid of one of Ozil, Payet, Lukaku or Fonte. If I sell Fonte then I'll be playing 5 defenders tomorrow.

I don't really want to get rid of any of the other 3 though.

Half of me is tempted to play with 10 tomorrow.

I would ship Lukaku, but 10 without hits should still be more than average.

Lukaku to Vardy is the obvious move but I really want to keep Lukaku, I think he's fixture proof and will want him back for his DGW.

Could happily lose Fonte as I'm overloaded with defenders that I can't all play every week.

        Just like having 2FTs really.

Don't use WC, couple of hits for attacking players and go with that.

That Yaya news is a kick in the teeth. At least I didn't bring him in this week but was hoping to carry my ft to start building DGWers - maybe WC 33 is now the option for me. Either way, what to do this week.

Silva or Siggy in for Yaya?

    Butland/McCarthy
    Kompany, Huth, Alderweireld
    Alli, Yaya Touré, Arnautovic, Mahrez
    Agüero, Vardy, Kane
    (Sánchez, Ward, Koscielny)

Same boat. I have a FT to replace him but it likely means I'll have to wildcard in 33 now

Hi everyone, any advice? Only two players in my squad have blanks this week and I'm fairly happy with my team but I do have 2FT and feel it might be a waste not to use one.

    Butland
    Alderweireld Kompany Fuchs Daniels
    Alli Arnautovic Mahrez
    Aguero Kane Vardy

    Bench: Forster Williams Ozil* Payet*

Definitely want to keep hold of Ozil, and also kinda want to keep Payet too but the fixtures make me think his spot could be better used by someone like Siggy.

    Stick or twist?

So keep Ozil (I brought him for 9.0) and play 10 or sell for Silva, Eriksen or Alli (who?) for a -4 to play 11?

    Kun v Kane

Basically FPL is about maximising the chance of gain and lowering the chance of blanks. We do this by taking all factors into account and making decisions based on weighing up the information available to us.

While City haven't been great on the road, Aguero has not only scored well against the weaker teams lately, as the stats and returns demonstrate, he has scored in three of his last 4 away matches. The concern is that Norwich's underlying defensive stats of late will begin to produce more representative results, coupled with Man City's away form.

For Kane, he is playing in a Tottenham side that genuinely have a rare shot at the title, hence an added hunger. They have shown they can play well on away days, and come up against a deflated Villa side. Villa's defensive stats coupled with Kane's attacking stats just look too good to ignore at the moment.

Both options have similar factors, but logically, Kane stands out as the better pick. Aguero has a significant negative factor. I would rather go with the logical choice and let chance be the cause of failure than go against it and have the blame on myself. As it says below, "That's just the dark side of probability".

All will be revealed this weekend, perhaps Mahrez and Vardy captainers will have the last laugh...

Went from Kun to Mahrez , so will likely end up on Kane to cover all bases

Nice summary. I think stats-wise, it is difficult to bet against a strong forward (Kane) against the worst defense in the league with a team that is completely derailing of late. However, Aguero is at another level compared to Kane, and Kun seems pretty hot. Aguero is also facing a bottom half of the table team that while not as poor defensively as Villa, has had several games this year where they have allowed more than 2 goals. Man City's scoring also seems to revolve more around Aguero lately than Spurs' scoring seems to revolve around Kane. (as GB would say, I have no data off-hand to support this, so please don't throw tables at me).

Thus, I think that there are valid arguments to be made for either choice, and I would not agree that selecting Aguero over Kane is "ilogical" (corollary of Kane being the "logical choice"). There is a lot of logic for either choice.
