It’s something of an understatement to suggest Leighton Baines has failed to live up to expectation this term. The top-scoring defender in last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with a total of 178 points, Everton’s left-back started this season priced at 8.0 but so far has returned just 27 points from ten appearances, an average of 2.7 per game compared to 4.7 last time round.

His lack of any real returns has been a strange one- reason would suggest the departure of Mikel Arteta would only have increased Baines’ returns, given that he’s number one for set-pieces and spot-kicks, but the emergence of on-loan Royston Drenthe has currently put him firmly in the shade.

As a result, he’s dropped in ownership, down to just 6% but with David Moyes’ side encountering a strong run of upcoming fixtures, you’d think that if ever he was about to realise his potential, now is the time.

Using our own ICT Index and Opta stats available to members, we analyse his displays so far to ascertain just where, if at all, Baines has under performed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Just wanted to ask your opinions. I'm thinking of getting rid of Warnock this week, to either a 4.0 (which means Wilkinson, Gabbidon or McAuley) or at most 4.3 which means Turner (Sun).

    The other option would be to keep Warnock and save up a FT for next week, obviously he has to play Tottenham but who knows, maybe he'll score well.

    The end result is to get Rooney and Ba in for Suarez and Ade eventually although I'm keeping the strikers as it is until I absolutely need to change.

    A completely different option would be to save the transfer this week and get Baines in next week by downgrading Ade, although that would mean settling with someone like Helgusson which doesn't sound great in the long run... I feel though that Baines will start to post some big scores soon but it's so hard trying to fit him in.

    My team is:

    De Gea (Vorm)
    Richards Enrique Warnock (Simpson Boyata)
    VDV Silva Walters Sinclair (Reo-Coker)
    RVP Suarez Ade

    0.0m and 1FT

    Basically Warnock, Suarez and Ade are the only positions that I'm not sure about and I'm pretty happy with the rest of the team so I'm just weighing up which is a better buy £ for £ Baines or Rooney...

        I don't think it's too bad a thing when England get knocked out early, stops all that painful delusion which floats around the country when we manage to beat a mediocre team in a lackluster style.

        based on a few things, like Greece winning Euro 2004, and France having to go through play-offs (and cheat) to get to WC in 2010. Basically although France got to final in 2006 WC, Greece get higher points as they won Euro 2004 (last year of the cycle)

    See Spain are losing 2-0 against Costa Rica - hmmm. Is there a chance that Germany could be World No. 1 soon in the FIFA Rankings?

    Seems like teams are starting to adapt to Spain's play and finding ways to beat them. Are they playing like Arsenal last season - possession but little goal threat - no real goalscorer as well. Villa playing out wide, Torres off-form etc.

      As someone mentioned a page or two back it's more than likely a certain apathy towards friendlies in light of them being world and european champions. But hopefully teams are finding a way to defeat the spanish/Barca style of play, for all it's technical greatness I find it very dull to watch.

      I've got a soft spot for the Germans so they'll be my 2nd team for the Euros, it won't take long for England to get knocked out so then they can happily take their place as my first team.

        Yes, many they've played too much football for a while - most of them play for Barca, some RM.

        I'd say teams are finding a way to beat them but not pretty and with a bit of luck - e.g. England. They'll probably win the Euros saying that but if Barca get to the CL final again, maybe a chance of burnout?

        Would bet on Germany as they're probably 2nd favourites.

      The thing everyone missed that confirmed him first choice at least for next 5 games was that Sunderland was trying to get an exeption loan deal for a keeper- which was denied by the FA.

      All the maps seem pretty small to me. Domination is always pretty hectic, apart from one map in the snow - I can't remember it's name.

      It also seems fairly laggy all the time, although I'm not sure whether it's just my connection.

    The Bendy Bus is calling me, try to talk me out of it.

    Team:
    Al-Habsi (Vorm)
    Jones, Enrique, Ward (Naylor, Raylor)
    VDV, Silva, Nani, Eagles (Moses)
    Studge, Ade, RVP

    1.6m in the bank, 1 FT.

    Options:
    A - Studge -> Bendy
    B - Ward -> Brown/Turner/Wilko
    C - Moses -> Drenthe
    D - Save transfer.

    As I say, following tonight's events and presuming Bendy got through unhurt, I'm very much leaning towards A, followed by B next week. Thoughts?

        Argh, thanks for making my decision even harder!

        Unsure about Drenthe, I feel we have to be sure he's both nailed on and that Everton are going to find form from somewhere. Also as mentioned, it'd be difficult to bench Eagles after last week.

        As for Wardy, he currently seems to have his shooting boots with 2 in 3 so I'm loathe to transfer him out. Bit of a silly reason to keep a member of a pretty crap defence but yeah...how is Stoke's confidence gonna be after the 5-0 battering?

        Studge has looked out of form for the last 2 Chelsea games at least and didn't look up to much for England either, seems short of confidence. 'pool and Wolves also tend to give the big boys a good game. Also if I keep him the I'd obviously keep him this week for the Wolves game as well which means missing Bendy vs. Wigan. Bendy also scored today.

        Sounds like I've already made my mind up, eh? I feel like I have but...it's Barndoor Bendtner, what am I thinking?!

        Thanks for the help guys, I will continue to ponder until Friday.

      Walters is anti-football, he's just playing OOP and is on penalties. He's a very good shout, I just don't like Stoke's attack so I personally wouldn't. I have Drenthe because he has the potential in any gameweek to bring in a massive points haul. It's up to you. There are loads of good players around the 6 mark.

      Walters. Drenthe. Sessegnon. Cleverly will be back hopefully this weekend as well! Gets you some United coverage on the cheap mate

      With the return of Ashley Young, Anderson, Carrick and CLEV hopefully Rooney is restored to his normal position. I don't get the Rooney-slating that is taking place at the minute. Perhaps it's just because I'm a United fan, but Rooney is still one of the most dangerous FPL players. He's on penalties and direct free kicks and United have a cracking run of fixtures approaching. It was only 5 weeks ago that everyman and his dog had Rooney in their team, and that was when they had adverse fixtures. Those without Rooney are going to have a nail biting few weeks.

      Yeah he seems to be out with Vidic and Ferdinand back

      The biggest factor that could lead to him playing would be SAF wrapping Ferdinand in cotton wool for the Benfica on Tuesday - he'll defo want Vidic Ferdinand for that one
      Smallings injury and Jones being due a rest will prob see him play some games too but it'll be hit and miss with him I reckon

    Ali Al Habsi is back to Oman for family reasons. Oman travelled to play Saudi Arabia tonight in the preliminary WC qualifiers, which saw a goalless draw, and said in his post match interview that he’s not going to England but rather will accompany the rest of the squad back to Oman for family reasons. No mention on when he’s flying back to England.
