Man City’s progress to the last eight of the Champions League is blighted by injuries to both their first-choice centre-halves. Sadio Mane wins an appeal over his weekend dismissal, Laurent Koscielny is back for Arsenal, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri could be set to miss out for Stoke due to a thigh injury.

Injury Worries for Pellegrini

Manchester City played out a goalless draw at home to Dynamo Kiev to win 3-1 on aggregate and book a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. Manuel Pellegrini named two changes for the Ukrainian giants’ visit, drafting in Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure for Bacary Sagna and Wilfried Bony. The Sky Blues managed to keep a clean sheet without the support of starting centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi, who were both replaced in the first period due to injury. Pellegrini expects Otamendi to recover before the Manchester derby after sustaining an impact knock, but Kompany suffered a recurrence of his ongoing calf problems and may well be poised for another spell on the sidelines:

“Vincent unfortunately again has a muscle injury in his calf, the same one he has had before. We will know tomorrow how important the injury is. Always with muscle injuries it means one month. He must be very strong mentally because he has to accept that there is nothing anybody can do immediately. Nicolas Otamendi received a kick and in just a couple days he could recover, we will see the way it develops.”

The Scout Says: Kompany’s fresh setback (his 14th calf injury since 2008) is a blow for the 100,000 managers that recruited him over the last two weeks ahead of City’s recently-announced double in Gameweek 34 (che, new). Pellegrini’s men have now managed three successive clean sheets in all competitions but bearing in mind two of those were against relegation candidates Villa and Norwich, who managed seven shots between them in those matches, many will be thinking twice over investing if the Belgian is indeed ruled out. With concerns over full-back rotation, Joe Hart – at 5.7 – could be the safest route into Pellegrini’s backline if Otamendi is also sidelined.

Mane appeal successful

Southampton lodged a successful appeal against the red card Sadio Mane received for a collision with Stoke City’s Erik Pieters, meaning the Senegalese winger no longer faces a four-match ban and will be in contention for Liverpool’s visit.

The Scout Says: Given that Mane last scored in Gameweek 10 and hasn’t enjoyed the security of starts since the turn of the year, it’s unlikely that the 7.3-priced midfielder will factor into our thinking during Saints’ relatively challenging run-in. Graziano Pelle returned to form with a brace on the weekend, but a tough pair of upcoming fixtures (LIV, lei) and the prospect of Charlie Austin returning after the international break diminishes his appeal. Ultimately, the south-coast club’s defence offers the most promise, with Virgil van Dijk presenting the strongest case by virtue of his attacking threat (three goals) and knack for accruing bonus points (16 – joint-fourth among defenders). Given that the Saints are without a double, though, many will likely overlook their chief protagonists once our wildcards are wielded ahead of Gameweek 34.

Koscielny back for Gunners

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League showdown against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Laurent Koscielny has replaced Calum Chambers in the matchday squad after recovering from injury.

The Scout Says: Koscielny’s return serves as a huge boost to a defence that conceded four goals and five big chances in his absence; incidentally, only Aston Villa surrendered more big chances (seven) in their last two match-ups. In terms of the prime route into the Gunners’ rearguard, there’s little to choose between Koscielny and Hector Bellerin: although the former has amassed more than twice as many shots (16 to seven) and three more goals (three to zero), the latter trumps his French team-mate in key passes (19 to eight) and assists (three to zero), engendering very similar points per game (ppg) averages (Koscielny: 4.3; Bellerin: 4.2). Analysing Arsenal’s clean-sheet prospects this weekend, they might struggle to contain an Everton side that ranks second for home goals (29). Looking beyond that tussle at Goodison Park, the North Londoners embark on a decent run (WAT, whu) through to an excellent double Gameweek (CRY, WBA), increasing the attraction of their rearguard assets.

Hughes Pessimistic on Shaqiri

Mark Hughes admitted that Xherdan Shaqiri could be set for a short stint on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury in the first half of their home tie against Southampton:

“It’s disappointing that he looks likely to miss a couple of games, because prior to that it was arguably his best run of form in terms of end product and scoring goals himself. If he is to miss games, hopefully he will pick up quickly from where he left off.”

The Scout Says: Shaqiri hit a good run of form – producing one goal and two assists – during Stoke’s recent three-match winning streak, so his thigh complaint forces us to re-assess the Potters’ attacking potential. The Swiss midfielder could be in line to miss a trip to Watford this weekend but could conceivably recuperate during the two-week international break, rendering him available for Swansea City’s visit in Gameweek 32. Regardless, Marko Arnautovic – who’s recorded three goals in his previous four starts – remains the standout pick in the Staffordshire outfit’s camp. However, Shaqiri – despite clocking just 30 minutes against Saints – fashioned the joint-fourth-most key passes (11) among midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, so the creative void he leaves in his wake will be a concern for Arnautovic’s 17% ownership. Scanning the fixture list, those owners might already be engineering an exit route from the Austrian, considering that Stoke face an unforgiving trio of match-ups (liv, TOT, mci) beyond the Swans clash and midfielders with a double in Gameweek 34 will be in higher demand.

Howe hopeful on Arter

Eddie Howe believes that Harry Arter will recover in time for Bournemouth’s road clash against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend:

“Harry was close but just wasn’t close enough. He hasn’t trained since his injury and that was nearly two weeks ago. We are hopeful we can build him up this week.”

The Scout Says: The Cherries are in the midst of a four-match unbeaten streak that has yielded three successive victories and eight goals. As a consequence of their attacking exploits, the likes of Matt Ritchie (four assists in three), Joshua King (two goals and one assist in two, out-of-position potential) and Max Gradel (goal and assist against Swansea last week) have furnished managers with a number of midfield options below the 6.0 mark. That being said, prospective investors will likely be deterred by Bournemouth’s perilous string of fixtures (tot, MCI, avl, LIV, CHE, eve, WBA, mun) from how until the end of the season and those managers that are planning to adopt a pre-Gameweek 34 wildcard strategy will more than likely be happy to leave Cherries recruits alone.

Reid plays down injury fears

Winston Reid said that he was withdrawn in the second half of West Ham’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United because of cramp and looks in line to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend:

“I had a conversation with the manager and we had to see how I felt. I felt alright and I tried to keep it simple. It is nice to be back out there and with a week’s training behind me, I look forward to facing Chelsea next weekend. I think when you get booked after a minute or so. You have to play carefully and that tempers how you can play. I felt a bit of cramp, I didn’t pull my hamstring though.”

The Scout Says: Despite contending with a plethora of injuries, West Ham posted clean sheets in their last three match-ups at the Boleyn Ground. Once the Hammers have negotiated the Blues head-to-head, they play at home three times (CRY, ARS, lei & WAT) within the space of as many Gameweeks (including their Gameweek 34 double), and also have a pair of home fixtures (SWA, MUN) in Gameweek 37 – their final two fixtures at Upton Park before moving ground in the summer. Although Aaron Cresswell (5.7) is the pick of the Irons’ back line, given that he’s a guaranteed starter, has missed just one league match all term and lays claim to a superior ppg average (3.9) than any defensive team-mate, the far more budget-friendly Reid, at 4.8, could also feature in our wildcard plans if he can steer clear of the treatment room from this point onwards.

Every ounce of my being is telling me to ignore Liverpool defenders.

Is Firmino enough? Or at least one defender necessary?

Last season's Liverpool DGW debacle haunts me.

Not really.. You've got some good DGW players DDG, Kompany (Possibly), Ozil, Kun.. If you still have your FT this week that's still 4 more you can add.. So a starting 11 of 8 (7 without Komp) + whoever you decide to keep out of Mahrez, Kane, Vardy, Eriksen etc.. You're fine. You could even come out of it better than those shipping all those players.

  5. Dare You Go Aguero-less for the DGWKs?

Just continuing on from Grimandi's post in the other article (link at the bottom)...

Has anyone considered an Aguero-less wildcard team to bench boost in GW34? Might seem like madness but there are a few things making me consider it!

They have been hugely disappointing away from home having scored less than a goal a game over the season so far. Not sure che/new looks massively appealing either to be honest at this point in the season.

Man City's fixture before DGW34 is West Brom at home, so wildcarding in GW33 you will be very reluctant not to go with Aguero. However now that Man City have reached the CL QF the first leg is midweek before the WBA game and the second leg is midweek between GW33 and GW34...

So there are question marks whether City take the foot off the pedal or take him off early. GW35 at home to Stoke is more of a worry, especially if City lose the QF. Remaining fixtures are sot ARS swa in the last 3 gameweeks if you are brave enough to go without him.

But the biggest appeal to dropping him is that I am pretty sure I won't captain him DGW34 why not invest the extra 3-5m on the squad if you are using the bench boost chip?

Man City also don't have a DGW37 either so the team structure will also build a better DGW37 team.

    Anyone tempted?

It would actually be more like 6-7m to invest as there are few strikers to choose from, which may also be a reason to stick with Aguero. Say you went Aguero-less which three would you pick?

      Lukaku for certain. Martial? and...?

City will still have to fight for 4th place I believe.

I am tempted but are there better replacements?

      Giroud - Welbeck threat
      Martial - no consistency
      Rondon - WBA...
Sturridge - the only capable replacement but might not even play a single minute

A major factor in ditching Aguero though, would be KDB's form and fitness. I personally think it's very risky to go without City attack.

Yes the lack of replacements is the main concern which may make having Aguero team the only option. Hopefully another couple options come forward before GW33.

Do you really feel that Lukaku is a better option than Vardy from now GW31 - GW35. Both will play 5 games in these weeks. Vardys fixtures look good between these weeks were as Lukaku's don't look that great. Think he would only be viable for GW 34 and GW36 onwards.

russel martin as a pick with 3 goals so far, 18 goal attempts and 8 chances created. playing on several position and key player. 2 bonus points, not so impressive but bearing in mind norwich conceded a lot that's not so bad and can be foundation for coming weeks. thinking about bennet -> martin this week.

also massive question about returning payet.

      1. hiawatha
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

crucial period for norwich are following four gameweeks.
        gw31 West Brom (A)
        gw32 Newcastle (H)
        gw33 Crystal Palace (A)
        gw34 Sunderland (H)

        and then
        -
        gw36 Arsenal (A)
        gw37 Man Utd (H)
        gw37 Watford (H)
        gw38 Everton (A)

so we can expect them to give all their best in those games. for those planning wc33 martin would be option for brom and newcastle or a bit further with transfer prior to gw34.

another possible option is klose who is absolute considering CBI.

Punt or Plan in the build up to the DGW?

For those playing to use WC in GW33, is the plan to punt your way there. Or plan by buying in some key players for the DGW that are likely to rise in price to avoid the possibility of being 0.1 off your ideal team.

I think there is no chance whatsoever they will field a full strength side against Liverpool. Makes a triple up on Liverpool players even more appealing.

Oh one more Jonty. I have never understood the term "safe pick". People like my very good friend but also long time fantasy nemesis has a "safe" style. He pretty much captains Aguero every week. For him this is nice and cosy, but mean while My captains are out scoring his and I've gained 50 points in 4 weeks.

Tips for trying to win FPL?
Having my best season ever thanks to everyone at FFS, currently ranked 883, I'm now wondering what the best strategy is to actually have a crack at winning? Do I just make dullard choices from now on to keep those behind me at bay, or do I need to make a lot of differential calls to overtake those above me who are also probably making those dullard calls too?

Dullard picks to maintain position, differentials to aim for the top.

But health warning - differentials can go down as well as up, and often do, so they need to be very well chosen (and a bit of luck can help too).

Green windmill gave some insight a while back into Watford's difficulties in playing three games during a week, showing that it severely impacts their results.

Given that they play the fa cup semi final 3 days after their second GW34 match, are they a team to avoid for the DGW?

In other words how many points can the "veteran" players hope to gain on the "casuals" who may have already played their chips?

So if we WC GW33 and Have Kun, Lukaku, Giroud/Martial trio up front and have to plan our transfers for GW37, who are we getting in for Kun (with single game week in GW37) if or when we decide to ship him out for GW37 to have strong 11 DGWers?

      Costa?

      Ighalo, Deeney, Rooney?

Of course, if everyone is fit to play.

He used to be in an FPL mini-league, which he won more than once, that contained most of the leading British tennis-players as well as a few overseas ones such as Caroline Wozniacki, who is a big Liverpool fan. The strange thing however was that he listed his country as England (his country of residence) rather than Scotland.

Don't know if he still plays FPL - he may be more interested in other fantasy games these days (MLS?).

I've missed the time to ask the question for the scoutcast, but Jonty if you think is worth it, you may do a hot topic for this. I think there would be many grateful people on the site, which will appreciate that kind of discussion. Thanks!

Think I'm gonna go against the grain, and go for no WC TC GW34, WC36 and use BB 37. Could change if Everton get a TGW 37 though. Can get this for 34 with one hit

    De Gea
    Bellerin Koscielny Alderwiereld
    Sanchez (TC) Antonio Firmino Lingard
    Martial Aguero Lukaku

    Fabianski, Mahrez, Simpson, Daniels

I'm quite far behind, so this allows me to keep Leicester players for longer, and then can go completely silly, BB with 15 DGWers in 37, all eggs in one basket. I think for chasers its a viable strategy, but with a lead I'd probably go BB in 34.

My WC- plan (GW33) without Mahrez.

    De Gea, Cech
    Smalling, Rojo, Jagielka, Sakho, Olsson
    Ozil, Payet, Sanchez, Firmino, Milner
    Kun, Lukaku, Deeney

I don't think everton have been very good defensively, so having Jagielka (without the attacking potential that Coleman/Baines have to justify getting them in) means i would look elsewhere. Also three man united defenders is risky business

    So Kompany to?
    A) Bellerin
    B) Otamendi(if fit)
    C) Koscielny
    D) Liverpool defender

I'm not sure if I will WC in gw33. I'm thinking I may just take one or two hits and WC later. Depending on the fixtures and when they fall. So looking at getting a Dgw defender for Kompany. Or should I just get Williams? I can actually see AVL scoring though.

      Bellerin for me

Otamendi injured and with Kompany injured and Man City in lack luster mode a city defender doesn't seem all that appeaking

Koscielny yeah but Bellerin has that assist potential (although you could argue Koscielny has the goal potential)

Liverpool defence, do you really want a Liverpool defender? for the DGW yeah, but not for a run up of games

Mignolet could at any point drop kick the ball into his own net, I don't know - I have looked at it and couldn't find a sure way into the defence. Sakho, Toure, Skrtel, Lovren all in that position so it's hard to call. Flanagan back gives a headache for those acquiring Moreno, leaving Clyne but pricey at 5.2m

I've had so many weeks where I've struggled to make a transfer, because the "players to have" seem to have barely changed all season.

Yeah it has been a bit of a boring season in those regards, vardy/lukaku/kane/mahrez/özil has kept on scoring and not really any reliable differentials to pick

Seeing everyone lining up a WC33, BB34 is making me want to go WC36, BB 37, especially considering I can field a decent DGW in 34 without hits AND use that same team to have a very good side in 35.

Think 36, 37 is more of a risk but I have a 50pt gap to chase down which is swaying me.

The thought of sitting there at the end of the week and watching Kane destroy my rank is putting me off Siggy .

Exactly my thinking. Also even though Siggy is playing Villa, I'd say Kane is much more likely to get 2+ goals.

I'm 50/50 at the min . Captaining players against Villa in single gw's for the rest of the season might be the way to go

Siggy is tempting, but it's not the time to go against the masses for me so I'm 75% sure I'll end up going with Kane.

Because I'm fairly happy with my rank at the moment and I'd prefer to play safe with captaincy for now and stay steady/climb slowly, then hopefully use my WC and chips to boost my OR later.

Fair play. Still don't think there is any such thing as safe. Every punt I make against my rival pays off. He just keeps on captaining Aguero.

What option would you prefer in my situation:

A: Wildcard to this to bench boost 15 in gw34 https://imgur.com/a/yrsa5

B: Navigate to this to get 9 doublers in 34 but keep 3 Spurs https://imgur.com/a/T04eH

Not a fan at all of that defense. I like the teams tho
        Evans ➡ Dawson
Smalling ➡ someone cheaper/likely to play 2 ManU
        Clyne ➡ Sahko

Depending on news, ship Kompany for Dawson/Williams/PvA
