Man City’s progress to the last eight of the Champions League is blighted by injuries to both their first-choice centre-halves. Sadio Mane wins an appeal over his weekend dismissal, Laurent Koscielny is back for Arsenal, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri could be set to miss out for Stoke due to a thigh injury.

Injury Worries for Pellegrini

Manchester City played out a goalless draw at home to Dynamo Kiev to win 3-1 on aggregate and book a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. Manuel Pellegrini named two changes for the Ukrainian giants’ visit, drafting in Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure for Bacary Sagna and Wilfried Bony. The Sky Blues managed to keep a clean sheet without the support of starting centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi, who were both replaced in the first period due to injury. Pellegrini expects Otamendi to recover before the Manchester derby after sustaining an impact knock, but Kompany suffered a recurrence of his ongoing calf problems and may well be poised for another spell on the sidelines:

“Vincent unfortunately again has a muscle injury in his calf, the same one he has had before. We will know tomorrow how important the injury is. Always with muscle injuries it means one month. He must be very strong mentally because he has to accept that there is nothing anybody can do immediately. Nicolas Otamendi received a kick and in just a couple days he could recover, we will see the way it develops.”

The Scout Says: Kompany’s fresh setback (his 14th calf injury since 2008) is a blow for the 100,000 managers that recruited him over the last two weeks ahead of City’s recently-announced double in Gameweek 34 (che, new). Pellegrini’s men have now managed three successive clean sheets in all competitions but bearing in mind two of those were against relegation candidates Villa and Norwich, who managed seven shots between them in those matches, many will be thinking twice over investing if the Belgian is indeed ruled out. With concerns over full-back rotation, Joe Hart – at 5.7 – could be the safest route into Pellegrini’s backline if Otamendi is also sidelined.

Mane appeal successful

Southampton lodged a successful appeal against the red card Sadio Mane received for a collision with Stoke City’s Erik Pieters, meaning the Senegalese winger no longer faces a four-match ban and will be in contention for Liverpool’s visit.

The Scout Says: Given that Mane last scored in Gameweek 10 and hasn’t enjoyed the security of starts since the turn of the year, it’s unlikely that the 7.3-priced midfielder will factor into our thinking during Saints’ relatively challenging run-in. Graziano Pelle returned to form with a brace on the weekend, but a tough pair of upcoming fixtures (LIV, lei) and the prospect of Charlie Austin returning after the international break diminishes his appeal. Ultimately, the south-coast club’s defence offers the most promise, with Virgil van Dijk presenting the strongest case by virtue of his attacking threat (three goals) and knack for accruing bonus points (16 – joint-fourth among defenders). Given that the Saints are without a double, though, many will likely overlook their chief protagonists once our wildcards are wielded ahead of Gameweek 34.

Koscielny back for Gunners

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League showdown against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Laurent Koscielny has replaced Calum Chambers in the matchday squad after recovering from injury.

The Scout Says: Koscielny’s return serves as a huge boost to a defence that conceded four goals and five big chances in his absence; incidentally, only Aston Villa surrendered more big chances (seven) in their last two match-ups. In terms of the prime route into the Gunners’ rearguard, there’s little to choose between Koscielny and Hector Bellerin: although the former has amassed more than twice as many shots (16 to seven) and three more goals (three to zero), the latter trumps his French team-mate in key passes (19 to eight) and assists (three to zero), engendering very similar points per game (ppg) averages (Koscielny: 4.3; Bellerin: 4.2). Analysing Arsenal’s clean-sheet prospects this weekend, they might struggle to contain an Everton side that ranks second for home goals (29). Looking beyond that tussle at Goodison Park, the North Londoners embark on a decent run (WAT, whu) through to an excellent double Gameweek (CRY, WBA), increasing the attraction of their rearguard assets.

Hughes Pessimistic on Shaqiri

Mark Hughes admitted that Xherdan Shaqiri could be set for a short stint on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury in the first half of their home tie against Southampton:

“It’s disappointing that he looks likely to miss a couple of games, because prior to that it was arguably his best run of form in terms of end product and scoring goals himself. If he is to miss games, hopefully he will pick up quickly from where he left off.”

The Scout Says: Shaqiri hit a good run of form – producing one goal and two assists – during Stoke’s recent three-match winning streak, so his thigh complaint forces us to re-assess the Potters’ attacking potential. The Swiss midfielder could be in line to miss a trip to Watford this weekend but could conceivably recuperate during the two-week international break, rendering him available for Swansea City’s visit in Gameweek 32. Regardless, Marko Arnautovic – who’s recorded three goals in his previous four starts – remains the standout pick in the Staffordshire outfit’s camp. However, Shaqiri – despite clocking just 30 minutes against Saints – fashioned the joint-fourth-most key passes (11) among midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, so the creative void he leaves in his wake will be a concern for Arnautovic’s 17% ownership. Scanning the fixture list, those owners might already be engineering an exit route from the Austrian, considering that Stoke face an unforgiving trio of match-ups (liv, TOT, mci) beyond the Swans clash and midfielders with a double in Gameweek 34 will be in higher demand.

Howe hopeful on Arter

Eddie Howe believes that Harry Arter will recover in time for Bournemouth’s road clash against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend:

“Harry was close but just wasn’t close enough. He hasn’t trained since his injury and that was nearly two weeks ago. We are hopeful we can build him up this week.”

The Scout Says: The Cherries are in the midst of a four-match unbeaten streak that has yielded three successive victories and eight goals. As a consequence of their attacking exploits, the likes of Matt Ritchie (four assists in three), Joshua King (two goals and one assist in two, out-of-position potential) and Max Gradel (goal and assist against Swansea last week) have furnished managers with a number of midfield options below the 6.0 mark. That being said, prospective investors will likely be deterred by Bournemouth’s perilous string of fixtures (tot, MCI, avl, LIV, CHE, eve, WBA, mun) from how until the end of the season and those managers that are planning to adopt a pre-Gameweek 34 wildcard strategy will more than likely be happy to leave Cherries recruits alone.

Reid plays down injury fears

Winston Reid said that he was withdrawn in the second half of West Ham’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United because of cramp and looks in line to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend:

“I had a conversation with the manager and we had to see how I felt. I felt alright and I tried to keep it simple. It is nice to be back out there and with a week’s training behind me, I look forward to facing Chelsea next weekend. I think when you get booked after a minute or so. You have to play carefully and that tempers how you can play. I felt a bit of cramp, I didn’t pull my hamstring though.”

The Scout Says: Despite contending with a plethora of injuries, West Ham posted clean sheets in their last three match-ups at the Boleyn Ground. Once the Hammers have negotiated the Blues head-to-head, they play at home three times (CRY, ARS, lei & WAT) within the space of as many Gameweeks (including their Gameweek 34 double), and also have a pair of home fixtures (SWA, MUN) in Gameweek 37 – their final two fixtures at Upton Park before moving ground in the summer. Although Aaron Cresswell (5.7) is the pick of the Irons’ back line, given that he’s a guaranteed starter, has missed just one league match all term and lays claim to a superior ppg average (3.9) than any defensive team-mate, the far more budget-friendly Reid, at 4.8, could also feature in our wildcard plans if he can steer clear of the treatment room from this point onwards.

Really don't know what kind of fight Arsenal still will present, plus United week after next AND covered for a DGW...

Just got no idea really, I have Dann (lei - but 3x Leicester players in the game, too, so 4 in one match seems too much plus Palace are awful defensively) and Saylor (SUN - but I expect them to concede and no guarantees he'll start) so I should really replace Kompany with SOMEONE.

DK who. Might just plump for Ivan and hope for attacking returns given that they also have avl in GW32 prior to my WC.

I'm really tempted to actually, just so I've actually started him once this year.

Why do you reckon I should? Rafa factor?

In terms of transfers, I guess I've got it down to the following:

Think I’ve got this down to the following:

            - PvA. Attacking threat, knows where the goal is. Major positive is Big Sam factor and two decent fixtures (new WBA). But I can see Rafa keeping it tight
            - A WBA DEFENDER. No idea who yet. But two decent fixtures NOR sun. However, they’ve only kept 2 clean sheets in the last 11!
            - Ivanovic. Avl home week after next. But I think WHU will score.
            - Funes Mori – threat at corners, DGW
            - Williams - one week for a "gimme" cs

When should I use my WC?
    A) GW33
    B) GW36

GW34: 6 of my current players have 2 games.
GW37: 1 of my current players have 2 games.

    My team right now:
    Butland Hennessey
    Bellerin Alderweireld Kompany VVD Simpson
    Özil Payet Mahrez Sigurdsson Alli
    Aguero Kane Vardy

FT: 1, ITB: 1.4, WC, BB

Yeah. I'm gonna have Traore and Willian in for gw32. It's just whether I max out with Azpi or not.

I do kind of fancy Saints to put up a tough show for Liverpool, especially after them having Europa

I fancy one of those for GW32 as well man, Willian has played well all year despite Chelsea having zero hope, and Traore will be looking to prove he's a good 'un.

This is why I'm tempted to get Ivanovic, personally, for both WHU and avl. He's got that attacking threat (I'm expecting WHU to score) and he also covers the villa game, plus I'll have another FT to take a punt on one of the Chelsea mids - probably Willian.

Food for thought - will keep an eye on Kompany's drop pace, I really want to have the 0.1 profit I've made because it could make the difference in my WC draft!! lol

Now, I’m not scaremongering here, merely thinking out loud.

Other than Mignolet and arguably Firmino, I can’t see any nailed Liverpool players. Klopp likes Firmino yes, so he’ll get more game time than most you’d think so think he would be a good move. However, Coutinho and Sturridge are regularly benched, with Benteke and Origi no go areas. If they progress in the Europa, Flanagan isn’t in the Europa squad so you’d think he’d get more league minutes. Clyne and Moreno have both sat on the pine since the League Cup final so will that trend continue? Henderson is no option now he doesn’t have pens. Milner has pens but hardly an enthralling pick.

Changing clubs, with regards to Hennessey and Robles, I believe there is a possibility that Howard and Speroni could play the last home game in GW37 as you’d think they’ll both be off in the Summer and have been at their respective clubs a long time. If Everton and Palace have nothing to play for league wise, plus one or both may be in the FA Cup Final, I can see rotation here as a ‘thankyou’ to those two long serving players which would be frustrating if you start them in the DGW.

    Just my tuppence worth.

Milner is a class pick. Play the % 😀 Also, don't forget the Skrtel is back and could be nailed.

On the second point, it's possible, but I doubt it.

Firmino is the standout option. Milner is an underrated option IMO, i'll be getting him in for the doubles. In defence, Moreno is still first choice, he just had a bit of rotation due to playing in the cups & europa. I am not too fussed for a 'Pool defender though... although if I do go for one, i'll probably just stick with Moreno. If anyone was ever due, its him!

I agree. The only nailed on player is Mignolet. Progress in Europa will mean rotating even Firmino. I'm hoping they find a settled CB pairing so I can choose one of those by the time the WC comes along. Not sure what Skrtel coming back will mean. Lovren has been playing extremely well of late so I'm leaning towards him being the main one now.

There really isn't any good dgw striker options other than Lukaku and Kun. Might just keep Kane as my only sgw player for gw34.

Martial might be an option but has a blank in gw35 and if Rooney is back he might be shifted out wide.

With Arsenal we never know who starts upfront. Deeney / Ighalo two tough away games.

Sturridge would be great option and no blank but unfortunately injury prone

    Rondon,Wickham,Mitro are just poor choices

Yeah I'm thinking of keeping Kane, too, Kuqi, as well as perhaps Alli. Just think Spurs are going to string the results together now and it'll be worth having at least those two.

Leicester might be completely removed from my team - I'm keeping my trio (Fuchs, Mahrez, Vardy) until I WC but I think the attacking two seem to have run out of steam a bit.... they could explode at Palace but Mahrez is reaching the twilight zone now for me

Anyone who had Kompany and was NOT going to wildcard in gw33? Has Kompany's injury changed your wildcard mind?

I was going to get a full 11 dew players for gw34 with just one hit, so I was going to wildcard in 36 instead. Of course, Kompany get injured. Do I stick to the plan - 10 dgw players in 34 with one hit, and 11 in 37 with wildcard, or do I just wildcard in 33 now?

Getting 9 DGW'ers with no hit for GW34 makes it borderline for me - if you have less than 4 Liv/New/Mnc/Ars/WBA (i.e. those with a double in GW34 and no blank in GW35) I'd almost certainly go for WC33.

      1. Laporte In A Storm
        • 10 Years

I'd have at least 6 from those, and maybe 7 - Kun, Yaya, Firminho, Ozil, Bellerin, Dawson. So that would give me 9 dgw34 players with no hit and 7 of them play in gw35. You can see why I'm contemplating not wildcarding!

On this plan, my team for gw 34 (no hit) would be:

          DDG / Butland
          Bellerin / Toby / Dawson / Simpson / Wolly
          Ozil / Firminho / Yaya / Payet / Alli
          Kun / Lukaka / Vardy

Only DDG, Payet and Lukaka blank in gw35, making 4-4-2 automatically possible, or 1FT transfer to enable 3-4-3.

I'm on the same boat, mate -- especially because I've already used my WC. Any chance Kompany will be back for the double? Otherwise I think you're right in playing 10 DGWers as that should be enough. IMO, there's no point in forcing to get in DGW defenders as, apart from Arsenal and United, I think they will all concede.

      Anyway, care to help me?

      Forster, Hennessey
      Kompany*, Azpi, Toby, Williams, Simpson
      Sanchez, Mahrez, Alli, Arnie, Siggy
      Kun, Kane, Vardy

      2FTs, 0.5ITB.

As I'm preparing for the DGW, what should be my priority?

      A) Kompany ➡ Monreal or Rojo
      B) Free up some cash (Arnie ➡ Antonio) so I can afford Forster ➡ DDG
      C) Other

      Thanks, bro!

Kompany is out for 'at least' a month - and the DGW is exactly a month away. At this point, it's very early to say - it's not impossible, but it's also unlikely.

For your team, for a goalkeeper I might consider Foster>Mignolet instead, which gives you cash, a dgw player and a gw35 keeper (who plays NEW).

Then I would go Rojo for the utd defensive coverage instead (wouldn't double up utd def coverage, even with their good dgw fixtures).

Great advices, mate. Really appreciate it as Kompany's injured changed everything for me, hahaha.

That said, though, you're not going for a City defensive cover then? I want at least one Arsenal and one United cover for that area, along with Firmino, Antonio (can't afford Payet at this point) and Lukaku, giving me 8 DGWers (assuming I get a goalie too).

          1. Laporte In A Storm
            • 10 Years

For now Kompany is injured, no. There are no city defenders I like who are nailed enough. I could go for Hart instead of DDG I suppose, but then I lose any coverage on UTD def unless I spend one of my other transfers on someone like Rojo - but at the expense of Lukaku, Firminho or Silva? Nah. And for a hit... maybe. But for a hit, I might prefer to get a third dgw striker in instead.

Sounds like a plan. You're sorted then, mate. Looking good for the run-in! 🙂

As for me, I guess there's no point in wasting a transfer to get rid of Kompany. That said, I'm going to gamble and leave him on the bench and stick with my plan to field 7/8 DGWers with no or one hit only. Will be getting in: Migs/Robles, Arsenal defender, United defender, Antonio, Firmino and Lukaku.

              Anything else I'm not seeing?

What are the best Triple Captain options out there for the upcoming DGEs? Looking at fixtures, I'm going for either Ozil (GW34, CPL & WBA) or Payet (GW37, SWA & MUN).

Outside options are a United attacker for GW34 (AVL & CPL) if an option can scrape together some form and consistency, Sanchez for GW34 if he starts he's scoring points or Lukaku if a Triple Gamesweek happens.

    Who are you considering?

    Butland/Hennessey
    Kompany/Alde/VVD/Daniels/Fuchs

I'm thinking of gambling on Mangala for a few weeks even although he and City are far from convincing. I think some of City's defensive problems are caused by Toure not tracking back, however, with Fernando and Fernandinho playing regularly in front of the back four and Toure now further forward this might help.

The run of fixtures aren't too bad and there is also the benefit of a double week in 34 followed by a game in 35 where several teams are blank.

      31: Man Utd (H)
      32: Bournemouth (A)
      33: WBA (H)
      34: Chelsea (A) & Newcastle (A)
