Man City’s progress to the last eight of the Champions League is blighted by injuries to both their first-choice centre-halves. Sadio Mane wins an appeal over his weekend dismissal, Laurent Koscielny is back for Arsenal, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri could be set to miss out for Stoke due to a thigh injury.

Injury Worries for Pellegrini

Manchester City played out a goalless draw at home to Dynamo Kiev to win 3-1 on aggregate and book a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. Manuel Pellegrini named two changes for the Ukrainian giants’ visit, drafting in Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure for Bacary Sagna and Wilfried Bony. The Sky Blues managed to keep a clean sheet without the support of starting centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi, who were both replaced in the first period due to injury. Pellegrini expects Otamendi to recover before the Manchester derby after sustaining an impact knock, but Kompany suffered a recurrence of his ongoing calf problems and may well be poised for another spell on the sidelines:

“Vincent unfortunately again has a muscle injury in his calf, the same one he has had before. We will know tomorrow how important the injury is. Always with muscle injuries it means one month. He must be very strong mentally because he has to accept that there is nothing anybody can do immediately. Nicolas Otamendi received a kick and in just a couple days he could recover, we will see the way it develops.”

The Scout Says: Kompany’s fresh setback (his 14th calf injury since 2008) is a blow for the 100,000 managers that recruited him over the last two weeks ahead of City’s recently-announced double in Gameweek 34 (che, new). Pellegrini’s men have now managed three successive clean sheets in all competitions but bearing in mind two of those were against relegation candidates Villa and Norwich, who managed seven shots between them in those matches, many will be thinking twice over investing if the Belgian is indeed ruled out. With concerns over full-back rotation, Joe Hart – at 5.7 – could be the safest route into Pellegrini’s backline if Otamendi is also sidelined.

Mane appeal successful

Southampton lodged a successful appeal against the red card Sadio Mane received for a collision with Stoke City’s Erik Pieters, meaning the Senegalese winger no longer faces a four-match ban and will be in contention for Liverpool’s visit.

The Scout Says: Given that Mane last scored in Gameweek 10 and hasn’t enjoyed the security of starts since the turn of the year, it’s unlikely that the 7.3-priced midfielder will factor into our thinking during Saints’ relatively challenging run-in. Graziano Pelle returned to form with a brace on the weekend, but a tough pair of upcoming fixtures (LIV, lei) and the prospect of Charlie Austin returning after the international break diminishes his appeal. Ultimately, the south-coast club’s defence offers the most promise, with Virgil van Dijk presenting the strongest case by virtue of his attacking threat (three goals) and knack for accruing bonus points (16 – joint-fourth among defenders). Given that the Saints are without a double, though, many will likely overlook their chief protagonists once our wildcards are wielded ahead of Gameweek 34.

Koscielny back for Gunners

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League showdown against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, Arsene Wenger confirmed that Laurent Koscielny has replaced Calum Chambers in the matchday squad after recovering from injury.

The Scout Says: Koscielny’s return serves as a huge boost to a defence that conceded four goals and five big chances in his absence; incidentally, only Aston Villa surrendered more big chances (seven) in their last two match-ups. In terms of the prime route into the Gunners’ rearguard, there’s little to choose between Koscielny and Hector Bellerin: although the former has amassed more than twice as many shots (16 to seven) and three more goals (three to zero), the latter trumps his French team-mate in key passes (19 to eight) and assists (three to zero), engendering very similar points per game (ppg) averages (Koscielny: 4.3; Bellerin: 4.2). Analysing Arsenal’s clean-sheet prospects this weekend, they might struggle to contain an Everton side that ranks second for home goals (29). Looking beyond that tussle at Goodison Park, the North Londoners embark on a decent run (WAT, whu) through to an excellent double Gameweek (CRY, WBA), increasing the attraction of their rearguard assets.

Hughes Pessimistic on Shaqiri

Mark Hughes admitted that Xherdan Shaqiri could be set for a short stint on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury in the first half of their home tie against Southampton:

“It’s disappointing that he looks likely to miss a couple of games, because prior to that it was arguably his best run of form in terms of end product and scoring goals himself. If he is to miss games, hopefully he will pick up quickly from where he left off.”

The Scout Says: Shaqiri hit a good run of form – producing one goal and two assists – during Stoke’s recent three-match winning streak, so his thigh complaint forces us to re-assess the Potters’ attacking potential. The Swiss midfielder could be in line to miss a trip to Watford this weekend but could conceivably recuperate during the two-week international break, rendering him available for Swansea City’s visit in Gameweek 32. Regardless, Marko Arnautovic – who’s recorded three goals in his previous four starts – remains the standout pick in the Staffordshire outfit’s camp. However, Shaqiri – despite clocking just 30 minutes against Saints – fashioned the joint-fourth-most key passes (11) among midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, so the creative void he leaves in his wake will be a concern for Arnautovic’s 17% ownership. Scanning the fixture list, those owners might already be engineering an exit route from the Austrian, considering that Stoke face an unforgiving trio of match-ups (liv, TOT, mci) beyond the Swans clash and midfielders with a double in Gameweek 34 will be in higher demand.

Howe hopeful on Arter

Eddie Howe believes that Harry Arter will recover in time for Bournemouth’s road clash against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend:

“Harry was close but just wasn’t close enough. He hasn’t trained since his injury and that was nearly two weeks ago. We are hopeful we can build him up this week.”

The Scout Says: The Cherries are in the midst of a four-match unbeaten streak that has yielded three successive victories and eight goals. As a consequence of their attacking exploits, the likes of Matt Ritchie (four assists in three), Joshua King (two goals and one assist in two, out-of-position potential) and Max Gradel (goal and assist against Swansea last week) have furnished managers with a number of midfield options below the 6.0 mark. That being said, prospective investors will likely be deterred by Bournemouth’s perilous string of fixtures (tot, MCI, avl, LIV, CHE, eve, WBA, mun) from how until the end of the season and those managers that are planning to adopt a pre-Gameweek 34 wildcard strategy will more than likely be happy to leave Cherries recruits alone.

Reid plays down injury fears

Winston Reid said that he was withdrawn in the second half of West Ham’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United because of cramp and looks in line to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend:

“I had a conversation with the manager and we had to see how I felt. I felt alright and I tried to keep it simple. It is nice to be back out there and with a week’s training behind me, I look forward to facing Chelsea next weekend. I think when you get booked after a minute or so. You have to play carefully and that tempers how you can play. I felt a bit of cramp, I didn’t pull my hamstring though.”

The Scout Says: Despite contending with a plethora of injuries, West Ham posted clean sheets in their last three match-ups at the Boleyn Ground. Once the Hammers have negotiated the Blues head-to-head, they play at home three times (CRY, ARS, lei & WAT) within the space of as many Gameweeks (including their Gameweek 34 double), and also have a pair of home fixtures (SWA, MUN) in Gameweek 37 – their final two fixtures at Upton Park before moving ground in the summer. Although Aaron Cresswell (5.7) is the pick of the Irons’ back line, given that he’s a guaranteed starter, has missed just one league match all term and lays claim to a superior ppg average (3.9) than any defensive team-mate, the far more budget-friendly Reid, at 4.8, could also feature in our wildcard plans if he can steer clear of the treatment room from this point onwards.

I actually was thinking the same thing tbh. started to draft a BB team and left him out:

      DDG/Foster
      Bellerin McCauley Moreno Nyom Smalling
      Antonio Sanchez Payet Firmino Barkley
      Lukaku Sturridge (big if) Martial

I can see a typical current team, with a mixture of DGW players and popular players from Spurs / Leic) beating a lot of these GW34 DGW teams - they look pretty poor

I suppose the bench boost will inevitably add a few points here and there, but then, if you look at GW33 - 36 as a set I think it could be close

Me too, the limitations of the GW35 blank really complicates a BB34 strategy the way I see it.

I read that and found it to be a brilliant guide, but if you look beyond the number of players, I think it complicates things. I'm not too keen on doubling up on Firmino and Coutinho because of the other midfield options out there, and the GW34 fixtures don't look too promising for a Liverpool double up at the back. Without three Liverpool players, that plan is already crumbling.

In addition, I would probably want to have three Everton players for their remaining two DGWs (unless they play CPL in GW35), Payet and possibly Antonio and Cresswell, along with 1-3 United players and maybe Ighalo/Deeney as a forward enabler. With a maximum of four of these in GW35, that would be tricky to accomodate without a WC in GW36.

  7. The Case for a GW36 WC
    Mr Pink
    • 12 Years
    9 years, 8 months ago

Currently leaning towards WC36 for the following reasons:

    1) I can get 9 DGW players in GW34 without a hit. If anything, experience has taught us that a SGW player with a good fixture might very well outscore a DGW player
    2) I want Kun for GW34, and that strains the budget a bit for a good BB team
    3) Keeping some Tot and Lei makes my GW35 team look a lot better than my WC33 alternative - it is not only about getting out 11 players imo

The joker in this planning is the eve - cpl fixture. If this comes before GW34, it might change my plans drastically. If it comes later, a WC could come in very handy to get 3xEverton along with Payet, 1-3 United as well as possibly Antonio and Ighalo/Deeney.

I also like the idea of "destroying" my team with a completely unbalanced setup for the BB37. Good fixtures for West Ham, Everton and United in GW38 should help here. Saving a FT to get in two Arsenal players look essential though. If they are still fighting for something in GW38 I can see them completely thrashing Villa.

You could be right. If Villa keep playing the way they are, I'll try to get two Arsenal players for that game anyway. The problem is that, if they have nothing to play for, it is hard to predict who will play, and even more so, get the goals...

      • 9 Years

going for wc36 myself i think, will have 9 DGW in 34 for -4.
      then i have a full 11 for 35
wc in 36 to load up on everton & west ham players for last 3 and take some big punts.

still unsure whether to BB/TC tho
      TC 34 would be firmino/ozil/sanchez
      TC 37 fermino/Lukaku

think id have a decent enough 15 to bb either so really depends on when i fancy the TC and where that last everton fixture comes

True, but with a WC in GW36 you have more flexibility to pick players from teams that still have something to play for, whereas with a WC33 strategy, you have to make do with whatever leftovers you have from GWs33/34/35...

Don't forget you still have 4 FT to tidy things up between 33 and 37 if going with the earlier WC. I'm thinking of rolling the FT this week (despite the Kompany news) to buy me some more time to hopefully hear about the final missing fixture.

Jip, that's the best we can do/hope for.

My problem is I only own Kun/Silva/Ozil from the DGW and only have 4 FT's between now and 34. Silva/Kane are breaking my budget. I can only fit one of Firmino or Payet in and then I can't afford an Ars defender without taking a -4.

            Not good.

Hence my first point. If I couldn't get Aguero, Lukaku, Payet, Firmino, Ozil + at least 4 other DGW players for GW34 without a hit, I would definitely go for a WC33.

Nice post, and I'm considering also.

2 big caveats for me here are

      1) likely to be a lot more rotation on GW37 than GW34
      2) teams in the FA cup final may have little to play for in the league (e.g. EVE, CPL, WAT) and may even rest players for at least one of the games in GW37

Mahrez, Kane + 9 DGWers in 34 (and a better 35) does appeal though!

      1. Mr Pink
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

Yes, it's not only about the quantity of DGW players. Liverpool's GW34 fixtures aren't exactly screaming clean sheets, and I find it hard to accomodate both Firmino and Coutinho in my midfield whilst staying within budget and getting all the other DGW players I'd want for a GW34 BB.

Rotation in GW37 will just have to be what it is. I'll use my WC to pick players with something to play for, and hope that most of them get 150+ mins.

I think it all depends on whether or not you have the possibility of getting a decent GW34 team without too many hits or not. My track record for short term punts is abysmal, so I'll do my trades going forward thinking that I'll WC in GW36, but if injuries come up, Eve-Cpl is placed in GW33 or other unexpected events occur, then it is easy enough to WC in GW33 instead.

        Going to leave this here.

        Pros of 33WC

        - Go with FFS
        - Less rotation
        - Cant punt without worry in GW 31,32,33
        - Possible TC for triple GW in Lukaku in 37
        - Lesser chances of rotation

        Pros of 37 WC
        - Can hold Kane/Alli/Mahrez/SOT for plum 35 fixtures and get 15 out for 37.
        - Can already get 10 out for 34. Current planning goes to waste
        - Differential final chance to get boost in rankings
        - Better TC options in 34 with Kun, Arsenal and United fixtures
        - Will get 3 optimum Everton players if its an Everton Triple GW (basically will have one Lukaku less)
        - Possible team combo
3 WHM (SWA, MUN) - Will almost certainly have 4th/5th spot to play for. Don't see much rotation
3 MUN (nor whm) - Could have 5th to play for
        3 EVER - Probably DGW
3 SUN - Could be fighting for their lives. Hello Defoe + Khazri + PVA
4 from LIV and WAT (Clyne/Mignolet, Firmino, Ighalo - less prone to rotation)

You're presuming that people wcing in 33 are going to ditch all the sgw players. Personally not doing that. I'll be keeping kane and mahrez. Then of the dgw players I would already have bellerin Ozil Payet and aguero so that team added to with a load of other dgw and a bb is far from destroyed and if set up and planned properly will be fine in 35 and also get a full team of dgws for 37. Many ways to do it and probably for most of us on here the differences in strategy and points will be minimal. What we all want is the advantage over the masses and we'll clearly have maximised our opportunities there no matter what strategy we employ.

I guess my feeling is that many of us are blinded by the new chips and feel the urge to BB with 15 DGW players.

I agree with you that a GW34 team with a few SGW players will probably do better over the run of a few GWs, but then again, my argument is that IF you are able to get a similar team to that in GW34 without WC, having a WC in hand could always come in handy.

I'm leaning the same way. Without knowing the EVEvCRY date it gives you a lot more flexibility for both DGWs and a better 35 team.

Helps that the two leagues I care about have leaders who have used their wildcard so whichever DGW I BB in I'll have an advantage but I could do with guarding against their Leicester and Spurs players.

So in this scenario do you bench boost in 37? Otherwise I think you're underestimating the wild card bench boost combo.

Your 9 DGW players vs my 16.

Daniels... you have earned your place as my Kompany replacement (off my bench). I'm not expecting a clean sheet... but go out there and smash in a penalty for me!

I guess a few of you guys are in the same boat as me (WC, BB and TC available), so hear are my thoughts.

There are only 2 viable options:

    A) TC in 34, WC in 36, BB in 37
+ Ozil(TC) and can keep Mahrez & Kane whilst getting a decent 9-10 DGWers
+ less hassle dealing with the GW35 blank
+ less risky removing solid picks with just 2 weeks left to get in risky DGWers

    B) WC in 33, BB in 34, TC in 37
+ better DGW and able to max on the better options
+ make the most of a WC (6 weeks rather than 2)
    + able to get 11 + 15 DGWers over the 2 DGWs

accurate and concise comparison of the two..thank you!

B extracts the most value from the chips but at the cost of removing players from the top two teams in the league (for now) for 6 gameweeks... gunna be a tough choice and might depend on spurs and leicester form going into 33 for me

Soo with no WC available, I have to be careful with my FTs/hits.

    My current team:

    Butland/hennessey
    Kompany Wimmer Cresswell VVD Simpson
    Silva Payet Arnautovic Mahrez Alli
    Kane Vardy Agüero

    2.3 ITB, 2 FT

Kompany, VVD, Arnautovic, Vardy, Butland, Hennessey are the ones who probably will be gone till GW 34.

Özil, Robles/Funes Mori, Lukaku, Dawson, Bellerin, Moreno, De Gea, Mata, Martial, Elliott, Gomes are the ones I'm considering yet.

This week I'm looking to bring Firmino in for Arnautovic and maybe sell Kompany or save the other FT.

Would be great if someone could help me planning my "road to GW34".
