Arsenal fall to defeat in Barcelona to tumble out of the Champions League. Nicolas Otamendi is optimistic of returning for City this weekend, Jan Vertonghen is nearing his Tottenham comeback, whilst Alberto Moreno is a doubt for Liverpool’s Europa League clash against United this evening.

Wenger’s men sent packing

Arsenal succumbed to a 3-1 defeat (5-1 aggregate) at the Nou Camp last night. Mohamed Elneny drew the visitors level in the 51st minute with his maiden goal, while Alexis Sanchez supplied the assist. Arsene Wenger resisted the opportunity to rest key players, given that the likes of Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny all lasted the distance. Mathieu Flamini started alongside Elneny in the double pivot but was replaced by Francis Coquelin just before the break due to an injury. Young Alex Iwobi was surprisingly handed a start on the left flank, with Sanchez moving over to the right, as Wenger opted to bench the likes of Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud and Joel Campbell.

The Scout Says: With a mouth-watering double Gameweek 34 (CRY, WBA) on the horizon for Wenger’s troops, Sanchez’ 11% ownership will be encouraged that the Chilean wide man has delivered attacking returns (one goal, two assists) in three of his last four starts across all competitions, illustrating his growing influence. Although most managers will opt for the consistency of Mesut Ozil, Sanchez’s superior capacity for explosive hauls renders him a compelling differential ahead of this weekend’s trip to Goodison, where Everton boast the top-flight’s worst defensive home record. Wenger’s decision to start Iwobi last night is certainly worth monitoring. Priced at 4.5 in FPL, the youngster would offer a very intriguing route into their attack if he can nail down a starting berth over the run-in, given that Sanchez and Ozil are 10.8 and 9.8 by comparison.

Van Gaal issues injury update

Ashley Young and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson returned to training on Wednesday but, according to Louis van Gaal, are not fit enough for Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Liverpool. Antonio Valencia, meanwhile, will also miss out, despite building up his match sharpness for the Under 21s last week:

“Ashley Young has been two months away but Borthwick-Jackson is another case. He has been about three weeks away so that is different. For every player, it is difficult after an injury to come back in the team and I give always the example of Marcos Rojo, who was the exception because I didn’t have other full-backs so I forced him to build up his capacity in the first team. He struggled, as you have seen, and I have given him 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 50 minutes, 70 minutes and then, at the end, 90 minutes, but he is now very tired yet he has to play maybe tomorrow. It is not easy for someone who has been out and maybe operated, so it is also a big transition for these kind of players. “

The Scout Says: By virtue of Man United’s favourable home ties (AVL, CRY) in their double Gameweek 34, they’ll be under greater scrutiny over their next three match-ups (mci, EVE, tot). Defensively, the return of the above-mentioned trio should increase rotation at the full-back slots, ensuring that the attractively priced Marcos Rojo (5.0) remains a risky proposition. Ultimately, Chris Smalling and David De Gea represent the only secure routes into a defence that charts bottom for goals conceded (seven) and top for clean sheets on home turf (nine).

Otamendi optimistic on weekend return

Nicolas Otamendi is confident that the dead leg he sustained against Dynamo Kiev will subside before the Manchester derby this weekend:

“It’s very similar to a dead leg injury I have had before – I will have a test [on Wednesday]. The blow wasn’t that serious but it was better not to continue and come off. The test I hope it shows nothing and am hopeful I can be there on Sunday.”

The Scout Says: Given that Vincent Kompany was also forced off on Tuesday, a return for Otamendi would be welcome news for Manuel Pellegrini, whose side have now chalked up three straight clean sheets ahead of Sunday’s visit from United. Although City are currently one of only five sides with a double Gameweek 34 and fixture in Gameweek 35, Kompany’s possible absence may deter many from investing in their rearguard, with rotation in the full-back berth lessening our options further. Having started 23 of the last 24 league matches, there’s no doubt that Otamendi is a secure starter under Pellegrini but at a price of 6.5, his average of 3.6 points per appearance – the fifth-highest amongst City’s backline – hasn’t proved value for money.

Vertonghen nearing Spurs return

Mauricio Pochettino hinted that Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen will be rested during Tottenham Hotspur’s midweek clash against Borussia Dortmund:

“We will see about Eriksen, but maybe he needs to rest a little bit. Maybe Dembele too. They have some things, but not big issues. But maybe they are not available tomorrow.”

The Argentine boss also confirmed that Jan Vertonghen and Clinton N’Jie could be back in contention after the international break, given that they’re expected to return to training next week:

“Jan and Clinton N’Jie are in a very good situation now. We expect from next week they start to train with the group and maybe for after the international break they will be available to be selected.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Spurs fielded a weakened XI in the first leg at Dortmund and subsequently fell to a 3-0 defeat, owners of Harry Kane and Dele Alli will be hoping Pochettino also takes it easy on the pair tonight ahead of Sunday’s home clash with Bournemouth. Nonetheless, with back-to-back clashes against Liverpool and United also preceding Gameweek 34, many Fantasy managers will be mulling over their Spurs quota, with some potentially eyeing up exits for Kane, Alli and Toby Alderweireld to take advantage of other teams’ busier schedules. Turning our attention to the North Londoners’ recovering players, Vertonghen’s return to the fold would eliminate Kevin Wimmer as a budget route into their rearguard. Priced at 4.6, the Austrian has enjoyed a temporary stint alongside Alderweireld at centre-half, starting each of the last seven Gameweeks, though will surely drop to the bench once Vertonghen’s fitness is up to scratch.

Moreno a doubt for Reds

Having felt a twinge in his hamstring during training yesterday, Alberto Moreno will be assessed this morning to determine his availability for the Reds’ meeting with Man United.

The Scout Says: With a single assist to his name all season, Moreno has flattered to deceive as a Fantasy product. The Spaniard boasts some very decent underlying statistics (top for key passes and fifth for attempts among all defenders) but, in spite of a pair of doubles to follow, the gradual reintegration of fit-again Jon Flanagan’s raises questions marks over Moreno’s security of starts over the run-in. Ally this with Martin Skrtel’s imminent return to first-team action and it’s fair to say Jurgen Klopp has plenty of defensive options at his disposal. If Liverpool progress past United tonight, the German may continue to rotate his options to cope with the packed schedule, which may well leave Simon Mignolet as their only safe source of defensive coverage for our wildcards.

Vardy struggles to get bonus points but Ozil has a record of scooping all 3 with just an assist.

            That is true.

But Mahrez against Palace is equally as good as Siggy against Villa

And Im hoping not to miss out on Wijanldum against sunderland.

Interesting selecting Taylor there, I did think about him but disregarded it due to it being a derby game. Villa do tend to score as well, however I feel Bournemouth will score at Spurs too. Unfortunately I don't foresse many clean sheets for myself this week

Case for playing BB in GW 37:

You could sell your City and Arsenal expensive assets, mainly Aguero and Sanchez (possibly Ozil/KdB too), which would leave you with soooo much cash to form a well-ballanced 15-man team. Doing that is essential for maximazing the points potential of this wonderful chip imo.

You could get something like this with 104.9 SV team:
    http://oi65.tinypic.com/jtt4it.jpg

If you change Coutinho to Antonio or even Sturridge to Ighalo, you've got tons of money to get a super-heavy defence too (better second keeper, Smalling etc...).

    Thoughts?

Those who WC33 are going to have some real dregs for DGW37 with many players likely to be rotated, rather than GW36 WC'ers who will know which teams are still playing for something and therefore which players are likely to play both matches. Could make a real difference.

      • 13 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

I'm increasingly coming round to this way of thinking. Aguero eats too much budget and is essential for this WC 33 strategy. I'd be happier to lose him for last 3 games (sot, ARS, swa). It's one of the upsides of a GW36 WC that hasn't been discussed as much.

It's the clean sheet potential of Liv, Ars and MU I would struggle

I think the rush to a WC33 and BB34 has been overplayed certainly and that there will be potential big rewards for those who go against the tide and try a WC 36 and BB37. I still think the 'safer' choice is WC33 and BB34 and would expect most ML leaders to opt for that.

I'm leaning towards the later WC and BB for two main reasons: 1) I'm chasing, so need to do something different to my rival and 2) I don't think the optimal 34 side is with 15 DGW players.

Let me expand: Lots of people lining up Liverpool and Everton assets for 34. First, Liverpool are going to concede in both games, so rules Migs out immediately. Skrtel potentially an option for goalscoring potential but, meh. Everton likewise, expect them to concede in both and, Coleman aside, not much attacking returns potential. I think Toby has better chance of points in a SGW than Everton and Liverpool defensive players, so I think there. I already have Hart in net, so by using 2/4 FTs for the next few game weeks I can fully cover the defence I want by bringing in an Arsenal and Man Utd defender. Moving onto midfield, I already have Arsenal and Liverpool cover, so maybe I bring in one more player. I'm happy to let Mahrez play vs West Ham at home. Which just leaves bringing Lukaku in...

That'd be no hits, 9 DGW player, almost a strong a side in my opinion as anyone wildcarding could field, a full complement of players in 35, with WC still in tact to go full on punt mode in 37.

The key question therefore is when the final Everton fixture is rescheduled. If it gets rescheduled for 35 then I think that forces a 34WC 35BB.

My thoughts on the 3 main 4,3 options being considered for wc

1 Robles - am more than happy to take him tbh. He's started a fair few in a row now and Everton's defence has improved markedly since he has. He has 2 CS in 5 in the league plus CS v Bournemouth and Chelsea in the cup. He has started the last 8, and kept 5 CS. He isn't going anywhere

2 Gabriel - This guy I am not going near. His price is incredibly tempting but I think the number of games he's actually started when both Mert and Kos are fit is quite low. I am sure I saw it mentioned that Wenger said somewhere that he;ll pick Mert or Gabriel based on the opposition. Not worth the risk on a 15 player BB IMO

    3) Lingard - I see him somewhere between Robles and Gabriel in the risk stakes. He hasn't not started many games when fit. But if Rooney is fit by the DGW there's a chance he doesn't start one (or is subbed early) especially if United are still in either Europa or FA Cup. If you need some cash he's probably worth the risk, especially over Rashford

The Siggy vs Kane (C)aptain really is a tough decision this week. Probably even harder than Kane vs Aguero last week. From looking at the stats this is what was clear:

-Kane has a much higher goal threat. With many more Shots on Target/Pen box touches/Goal attempts
-Spurs as a team have a much stronger attacking threat than the Swans
-However Villa (Siggy's opponents) have a significantly worse defence than Bournemouth (Kane's opponents) and so are much more likely to concede.

So I guess its a choice of Player/Team attacking form vs Opponents Defensive form.
For me I think Kane is the safer choice. Your thoughts?

I'm comfortable avoiding Kane. For me it's between Siggy and Kun.

Bournemouth will keep it fairly tight, and I don't think it'll be more than 2-1 Spurs. Eriksen to grab one of the goals I reckon.

Probably will play Kane and bench Alli for Silva

I gotta keep the door open for either Mahrez or Alli in my WC myself.
Getting him next week for Siggy if all goes well

What everyone is forgetting is that the guy who is in number 1 , only is in that position because he already used all his cheaps..

With that in mind, i think cheaps really leveled up the FPL

Aside from Smalling, I just can't figure out who is the safest route to MU defense, even with Phil Jones back.
    What do you think?
I come to the conclusion that De gea and Smalling are the only two (exepensive) reliable picks?

Yes this is so frustrating cos I want a United defender but getting Smalling for DDG means no nailed on Arsenal defender.
Don't think Rojo is nailed on

Cheltenham fans. Who's your NAP today??

Also in what order do you fancy: Thistlecrack, Vautour and Limini??

The treble pays well but I get the feeling one won't win. There has to be a reason why Vautour didn't go for the Gold Cup for example maybe he isn't in top condition.

My defense is such a mess, i was hoping i could play Fuchs, Toby & Moreno until WC but with Moreno now i doubt i can't really risk that.

So who's the best option? I've already got Fabianski so not sure of a Swansea double up. A punt on either PVA or Janmaat or get a Chelsea in this week ready for Villa?

Only have 1 free and would have ideally like to have shipped Afobe/Arnie

I want an Arsenal and Man U defender for the DGW. Which is the better combo

    A) Bellerin and Rojo
    B) Smalling and Gabriel

Don't want DDG as I am already set on Mignolet / Robles as my goalies.

For those WC'ing in GW33 I want to hold to hold onto a few players who only have a a single game, only due to fact I got them very early and I would have to remortgage to buy them back.

Toby, got at 5.2 now 6.5
Kane, got at 9.2 now 10.3
Mahrez, got at 6.1 now 7.4

    Yay, nay?

Why are people offloading Vardy against a Crystal Palace side who have no wins, 2 draws and 8 losses this year, having conceded 23 goals over that period with no clean sheets, a run that includes a loss against Aston Villa?

      I'm not.

But I guess it's because they don't want to let Lukaku rise too much. Maybe their budgets are tight
