Fantasy managers received a considerable boost this afternoon with the news that Rafael Van der Vaart is back in training and edging towards full fitness once again.

The Tottenham talisman had, of course, tweaked a hamstring in Holland’s goalless friendly with Switzerland last Friday, limping out of the game just after the hour mark.

Fantasy plans for many were put on ice for gameweek 12 as we eagerly awaited an injury update and although Van der Vaart took to twitter over the last few days to confirm the problem was minor, today’s announcement was the first time the club have commented on the matter.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Joe Jordan was optimistic of Van der Vaart’s chances of a start against Aston Villa and with the game not until Monday night, the signs are definitely positive:

Rafa trained on Wednesday and from what the medical team are saying he’s at 75 per cent. That’s good, but we have to get him from 75 per cent to 100 per cent, we’ll have take it day to day and we do have a few days with the game on Monday. He’s got a chance, but it is important that there is no recurrence of the injury.

The Dutchman has been plagued with the problem since moving from Real Madrid in the summer of 2010 and has already missed the match against Wolves in gameweek four with a similar problem. Given that he had initially been expected to be sidelined for six weeks during that period, his powers of recuperation are clearly impressive and it would appear, once agin, he is on course for a quick recovery.

With 6 goals and 14 bonus points in his last six games, many would have him nailed on as an automatic captain choice this week- the fact he’s currently second in our Captains Poll behind Robin Van Persie is an indication of many managers’ thinking.

It’s a tricky one, though, and leaves many with an armband quandary. The nightmare scenario is he returns too quickly and suffers a tweak again, leaving a 2 point captaincy return. On the other hand, you wouldn’t put it past him to start and grab a couple and the maximum bonus. It’s looking like a bold decision is called for either way, particularly with Van Persie rolling up to Carrow Road on Saturday lunchtime.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The issue with that is that there's only really one game in the near future where I'd consider Lamps(c) - home against Wolves - over my other big guns (RVP / VDV / Silva / Nani), but even then RVP is home against Fulham. So I'm trying to weight this up taking (c) out of the equation...

the thing is that even with rotation the home games for the likes of see and drenthe are not necessarily going to be the games where they score big if thats your thought process. Drenthe & Sess had big points hauls away from home so had you left them out and gone with the home option then you might have missed out on the points. its never that straight forward. lamps takes the pens free kicks etc etc home & away. hope this helps but no doubt it wont.

I don't think you'll be interested in my views on Lamps but I'd rather have Lamps than rotate 6mil players, however I'd rather have 2 6mil players I could play every week and a few mil spare than Lamps.

Playing Drenthe and Sess every week, to me, is asking for a whole load of 2 pointers throughout the season. I'd definitely want to rotate one / both within my squad on a per-fixture basis.

They don't need to be the same 6mil players throughout the season though, and the money you save can be the difference between, say, Graham and Adebayor. It's only my opinion though, we probably have different strategies.

I think if you have them both, you don't rotate them. I prefer to utilize the rotation technique for the defenders and keepers. If you are forced into rotation, just got with Lamps. As green said, captain material

I need RVP. Who to get rid Rooney - Suarez - Balotelli.

I am taking an eight point hit to bring in RVP, he is crucial.

    A or B?

    A)Balo + Suarez > RVP + 5.6 to spend on third forward.

    B)Balo + Rooney > RVP + 8.1 to spend on third forward.

    My frontline:

    Roons/Ade/Sturridge

I know, I know. Gambled against RVP and lost. My only financial option at this point is to bring in RVP for Rooney. BUT, the thought of Rooney going crazy this week is making me nervous.

Oh, and I have Nasri. Any chance he'll play this week?

Just get rid of Nasri, regardless he is going to play this week. In the long-term he is not worth it.

If your only financial option is to get rid of Roo then go right ahead. What you just said about Rooney is what I said about Drogba this time last year.

If I were you I'd get RVP. There will be plenty time to make ground on your rivals when he's injured. There is a good chance Nasri will start imo as I think Milner may be fancied for the champs league fixture but with Mancini it's a gamble.

I've given my opinion but it's fairly worthless if truth be told. He's one of many City players who would be great FPL prospects if they started every week or even if Mancini's selection was predictable. Maybe it will be easier when man c are out the champs league.

I need RVP! Who to get rid Rooney – Suarez – Balotelli.

I am taking an eight point hit to bring in RVP, he is crucial.

    A or B?

    A)Balo + Suarez > RVP + 5.6 to spend on third forward.

    B)Balo + Rooney > RVP + 8.1 to spend on third forward.

Larsson suspended this week, but for next week I'd pick Graham and him.

If you have to pick now and it has to be one of those pairs, then the second one is better.

Not nailed on, but I'd suggest he was fairly secure.

Wilkinson (Huth) / Shawcross / Woodgate (Upson) / Wilson (Higginbotham)

That would be my guess this weekend, with Higginbotham staking a claim for a first choice LB spot.

Okay, time for me to decide because Bosingwa might drop tonight.

Have Ruddy, need to get rid of Given.

Do i get Howard for great rotation which leaves me 0.3 short of getting Rooney back or get a cheapy?

I don't see Enrique as a 'big' defender. He was incredible value at the start of the season, but at the current price, and the knowledge that Liverpool are not at the level people would have thought (IMO), Enrique is a bit meh.

Something I keep contemplating too (Selling Sturridge for a City striker).

I think Aguero and Dzeko will start, and I bloody love the former and think he's a safer option, I say go for Dzeko if you are will to accept a starting risk - every week.

Imagine if they actually did have a fit and sane Tevez still with them. That Man City strikeforce is a mess of talent.
