The ICC World T20 moves into its third phase from Tuesday (21st March). This takes a look at the fixtures and offers those playing the game a new article for cricket discussions.

Fixtures

22nd March, Tuesday  –  New Zealand Vs Pakistan, Mohali

23rd March, Wednesday –  England Vs Afghanistan, Delhi & India Vs Bangladesh, Bengaluru

25th March, Friday – Pakistan Vs Australia, Mohali & South Africa Vs West Indies, Nagpur

26th March, Saturday – Bangladesh Vs New Zealand, Kolkatta &  Sri Lanka Vs England, Delhi

27th March, Sunday – Afghanistan Vs West Indies, Nagpur & India Vs Australia, Mohali

28th March, Monday- South Africa Vs Sri Lanka, Delhi

Discussion Points

  • From this we can see that New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh play early on and their fixtures end early. So it would be good to load their players and save on some transfers.
  • Feroz shah kotla (New Delhi), Eden Gardens  (Kolkata), Chinna swamy (Bangalore) are slow pitches. But Mohali,Chandigarh is a little bit fast, skiddy, bouncy and grassy.

    Critique my team

    Ddg Elliot
    Bellerin Rojo Sahko Fuchs Simpson
Sanchez Ozil Payet Mahrez Firmino/Coutinho (waiting injury news)
Aguero Sturridge Deeney (enabler and good fixtures, can bench and play 3-5-2)

0.5 iitb for transfers if injuries occur. Will ditch Fuchs in 36 for a dgw defender and possibly Aguero -> lukaku for 36

583 from 4 including the winning bonuses. I'd say that's fairly average on here but not a bad way to end off phase 2. How did you guys score?

Can't say I fancy the openers, even as an Englishman. Bradman has to be in there. Jack Hobbs for the other spot perhaps.

Would rather have Viv Richards than Steve Waugh. Or Sobers for that matter. I'd probably have to find room for both.

Tendulkar ahead of Ponting, although I love Punter. This is hard to impossible in fairness...

This first point probably isn't helpful, but I prefer Shahzad to Akmal and Hales to Hafeez.

I'm waiting to see where Hafeez is scheduled to bat, as he didn't come in until very late on the last game - but batted at 4 the time before.

I had Johnson Charles as my wicketkeeper in the last phase and will be going with him again from the off... he doesn't actually keep wicket, but he opens for the West Indies and is only 70k - I think he's golden at that price, and it means I can spend the extra funds on the better players in the +100k bracket, without having to contuously rotate a wicket keeper or try and find the extra 20K for players I want.

Thanks for this... i'm guessing that's why he didn't bat until ridiculously late in the last game?

Going to slot in an alternative and check the team news later.

Thanks for that, it's an interesting idea, I might try it possibly with Andre Fletcher instead of Johnson Charles.

You know what, I hadn't even realised Fletcher was listed as a wicketkeeper as well... just automatically assumed it was Johnson and Ramdin only.

Gonna have to check out some stats then, Fletcher's probably the bigger 6 hitter between the 2, I would imagine - both boundary hitting top order batsmen at 70k, what's not to like?

With this tactic you lose stumping, and surely take less catches but the extra 20k can be the difference between getting someone for 110k and only being able to afford someone for 90k - In most circumstances, I'd fancy the extra 20k player to have a far higher ceiling score potential that the difference between a couple of stumpings and catches - and a wicketkeeper who doesn't bat inside the top 4 tend to not be great scorers in general (or expensive like Dhoni for example).

England's entire bowling attack's economy rate is 8.5+

        Shahzad is a MUST imo

England's entire bowling attack has only played at Mumbai. Until now.

Willey is ironically their most competent bowler 😆

I see - 8.5 did seem a little low for the last 2 games...

I am not onw who is swayed by the 'recency' bias.. 😉

I honestly think England's bowling is crap...batting on the other hand is excellent

Although that is exactly what has happened in the last 2 games lol

It is really crap. If Plunkett comes in, it might be a bit less crap and if it spins it will be even less crap. Trust in Rashid and Brother Moeen.

I had him as my wicketkeeper during the qualifying stage... he's an aggressive opening batsman/wicketkeeper, so definitely hits the profile... but I just think the 20k saved is better spent elsewhere in most cases.

Fletcher didn't play the first game, and only opened because Gayle was injured but it seems unlikely he'd be dropped much lower than 4(?) after his score against Sri Lanka. Charles has scores of 0 and 10 so far but has opened both games. As you say both could be good options.

Eden makes a good point above, regarding England's bowlers...

Shahzad from the start, then switch down to a 70k West Indian after Eng vs Afg?

That could be a shout. Not that keen on transferring in someone when they aren't playing but could work out in this case.

Think I'm going to go Shahzad from the start... he's nailed on to play and open, where as Fletcher could possibly come in and replace Charles after that knock (if Gayle's back and they want to open with Fletcher, it's only really Charles who would be replaced).

Then see who plays out of the two and switch to one of those later on the phase to free up extra funds.

I am making my Fantasy Team and I don't want more than 2 Pakistan players(Amir and Shehzad ) while I want 4 NZers(Guptill , Williamson , Corey and Santner) :/

Pakistan (in theory) are the better team to buy extra players from, as they play again in game 4 - but I'm in a similar camp to you, they're just not that appealing!

I'm looking at Amir, Afridi, Malik (waiting to make sure he's batting top 4) and Hafeez (will probably go without now, as I've been told he's injured)

Where as, with NZ, I want Guptil, Williamson, Munro (70k for an aggressive top order batsman) and Anderson... that's without looking at the main bowling options.

It was much easier in the last phase when SA played 2 in 3 matches, as you always fancied their games to be high scoring - with Pakistan's super-economical bowling, I'm just not as confident in big scores.

There's much to deliberate between now and start time, that's for sure!

I expect Pakistan to lose both of their matches , so I am just going with Shehzad and Amir..maybe Sami too if Pakistan bat first

What's the thinking behind Sami and Pakistan batting first? I tend to bring in bowlers when they bowl first - do you go the other way, or is this a specific tactic to Sami?

New Zealand have the worst chasing record and Pakistan are adept at defendind runs

With no Hafeez today, anyone going with Umar Akmal as their keeper?

Shehzad + Shahzad for me 😉

Hadn't considered him, due to him not batting in the top 4 (one of my unbroken rules regarding buying wicketkeepers) but if he moves up a slot without Hafeez, he could come into consideration.

Eden makes a strong case for Shahzad against England above... I'm probably going to go down that route for now.
