ICC World T20 Fantasy – Phase 3

The ICC World T20 moves into its third phase from Tuesday (21st March). This takes a look at the fixtures and offers those playing the game a new article for cricket discussions.

Fixtures

22nd March, Tuesday  –  New Zealand Vs Pakistan, Mohali

23rd March, Wednesday –  England Vs Afghanistan, Delhi & India Vs Bangladesh, Bengaluru

25th March, Friday – Pakistan Vs Australia, Mohali & South Africa Vs West Indies, Nagpur

26th March, Saturday – Bangladesh Vs New Zealand, Kolkatta &  Sri Lanka Vs England, Delhi

27th March, Sunday – Afghanistan Vs West Indies, Nagpur & India Vs Australia, Mohali

28th March, Monday- South Africa Vs Sri Lanka, Delhi

Discussion Points

  • From this we can see that New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh play early on and their fixtures end early. So it would be good to load their players and save on some transfers.
  • Feroz shah kotla (New Delhi), Eden Gardens  (Kolkata), Chinna swamy (Bangalore) are slow pitches. But Mohali,Chandigarh is a little bit fast, skiddy, bouncy and grassy.

        Feel very light and exposed with India's batting... just couldn't afford to add Kohli or Sharma as well as Raina (hopefully will bowl as well as bat) and it didn't seem worth the transfer bringing in Dhawan for just 1 game, even though he could score well here.

          Similar strategy to me then. Feeling very light on India and just praying I get away with it! A Kohli fail would be huge for me.

            Yeah, I weighed it up and it made sense.

            I'm hoping Raina gets most of India's runs and someone like Dhoni, who's likely to be owned by far less teams than Kohli and Sharma (haven't actually checked but I'm positive it will be the case).

    Missed a massive trick by having Buttler as my keeper. Was supposed to get rid of him as well but then I needed a keeper. None of these two teams have a tempting WK

          If Gayle is back, it will be between Charles and Fletcher

          Charles has been first choice up to now, but Fletcher was brilliant in the last game and Charles hasn't done much... so we'll have to wait for the team sheet

            If Charles doesn't open, he'll probably be dropped. Worst case scenario for Fletcher is he comes in at four.

    The top West Indian fan started with 6 Pak, 4 NZ and 1 Eng. He only used one transfer for this game to swap his Eng player to an Ind player so still has 19 transfers remaining. Lucky for him the Eng game barely had points in it. I believe using this strategy, he can get 5.3 players per game on average over the course of Phase 2.
    I'm 2nd amongst the WI fans and hoping that strategy hugely backfires on him

      That's all well and good, but these strategies often tie you to some very average players. There has to be a synthesis between quantity and quality.

      I am deliberately denying myself some real talent because of the way the fixtures fall, but I draw the line before I completely focus on maximising the number of scored performances.

        Agree. It also doesn't offer much flexibility in case one of your players isn't selected for their second game.

        I posted what he may be doing above. It does target some easier fixtures on paper but not sure that is enough. Having 6 WI vs Afg and 4 NZ v Bang does look good though

        It looks like a pretty sticky pitch though, doesn't it? They should be expecting to post 170 I would have thought. Plenty of wickets and power in hand.

            I love the cricket and love t20, thought Afghanistan were so unlucky earlier against us. Only that 25 penultimate over swung it our way. New Zealand and Windies doing well, great tournament all in all so far 🙂

              Yeah, definitely. I was resistant when T20 came along but I am a convert now. Prefer it to an ODI these days no contest.

              NZ and WI have been the standouts so far. England, Australia, India labouring big time. And SA couldn't defend 230!

              I've watched pretty much every single minute and I'm an expat living in Aus, so that's quite an ask with the time zone. Loving it tho!

                Yup that's my thinking as well. Really like Fletcher based on what I saw from him at the CPL T20 last year and he was a huge boost for my side after the SL game so hoping he keeps his spot

        Hmmm, with good bowling economy, a wicket, and 20+ runs at a good SR I was thinking another 10 runs would leave Shakib a good favourite for the MoM.

        Went for two differentials this round. Not sure it worked. But I am pretty happy with it. Shakib(C) was obvious safe pick. But went for Shabbir Rahman as Bangladesh plays again soon and also a budget friendly option to get the WI boys. But Raina pick worked out well. Was almost getting Sharma and the Budget couldn't help.
