With the announcement of rescheduled games and when the double Gameweeks will fall a range of strategies have been put forward to getting the most out of this busy end to the season. A popular strategy is to Wildcard in Gameweek 33 to take advantage of a bench boost chip in Gameweek 34. But I believe this strategy could be tweaked to bring in even bigger returns by bringing forward that Wildcard to Gameweek 32. Here I weigh up two key arguments for getting a strong Gameweek 34 team in place even earlier.

Fixtures

To me the biggest attraction is that many of the double Gameweek 34 teams have very strong Gameweek 32 fixtures.

Good fixtures

Arsenal (WAT)
West Ham (CPL)
Man City (bou)
Newcastle (nor)
West Brom (sun)

Poor fixtures

Liverpool (TOT)
Man Utd (EVE)

Now exploring the poor fixtures requires a little more thought. Before I talk about Liverpool players I want us to consider the situation with Man Utd, Everton, Watford and West Ham. These four teams are packed with fantastic double Gameweek options but unfortunately they also suffer from blanks in Gameweek 35. As a result we are limited to only four players from these teams where one must be a goalkeeper, so they can be benched in Gameweek 35.

I imagine many will have their eye on Dimitri Payet and Romelu Lukaku. Payet has a great fixture, while Lukaku not so much. Taking into account one spot being a goalkeeper, that may leave one other player who might even be another West Ham player with an easy fixture. It could even be a Manchester United defender who you’d probably want to start due to their strong home defensive record (nine clean sheets in 14). Lukaku might be the only player you have from these teams that has a bad fixture in Gameweek 32. The fact that people are considering selling Vardy for Lukaku ahead of Gameweek 31 with a free transfer confirms many consider him fixture proof anyway.

So what about our three Liverpool players? Again we need to consider what sort of players we will have from Liverpool. Will we even have three Liverpool players? Will some of them be bench-able?

Statistically Liverpool’s defence is very good. They have conceded just 16 shots inside the box in the last  four Gameweeks, second only to Man City. This doesn’t bode particularly well for our Tottenham assets. I imagine most of us have Dele Alli and Harry Kane, whom we will likely drop when we Wildcard. But if we wait until Gameweek 33 then we’d have to play them against Liverpool: not an easy fixture.

To me this cancels out getting in two Liverpool players in Gameweek 32 as you are swapping two players with a tough fixture and no double Gameweek for two with the same tricky fixture but crucially key players for double Gameweek 34.

To me the biggest attraction of a Gameweek 32 Wildcard is the strong fixtures for Arsenal (WAT) and West Ham(CPL). Of these two teams I only have Mesut Ozil so the chance to have say five players from these two teams is worth exploring. The players we will be looking at will likely include Alexis Sanchez and Dimitri Payet: potential captaincy options. Gameweek 32 might also include some easy clean sheet opportunities for a West Brom (sun) or Newcastle (nor) defender, not to mention Man City (bou) as well.

Price Changes

Secondly, there is the issue of price changes. By jumping the gun early you’ll be ahead of all the price rises for Double Gameweek players giving you time to think carefully about your players without having to be rushed into rash moves.

How this works with transfers is that it leaves you with two free transfers until the double Gameweek. One of these you will need to save for the Gameweek 35 blanks, leaving you with a ‘floating transfer’. This can be used in either Gameweek 33 or 34, perhaps either to swap out an injured player or to use it strategically perhaps to hold onto Riyad Mahrez (sun) for one more Gameweek.

How much TV/SV can we expect to add to our teams if we play the price rises well over the international break?

You won't make much playing the market; maybe 0.3M SV max but probably less. The saving will come from getting the players you actually want in your wildcard cheaper and getting full value from the players you sell. Certainly the likes of Lukaku, Payet and Firmino will probably be at least 0.2M cheaper at the beginning of WK32 compared to WK33.

It won't be a whole lot but the key is you'll get the main players cheaper in GW32 than you will in GW33. Ideal for those with low TV or if your budget is stretched to the limit already to get the team you want.

My main objection to an early wildcard is it could lessen the impact of smashing the casuals. They will be smashed in gw 34 no question. And until then. We keep up with them as have same players. By wildcarding a week early you give them the possibility for that one week that thtey could smash you as they will own completely different players

Could work either way Trigger. By differentiating early you could beat the casuals with the standard template team. In general the earlier you WC the riskier it is. The same goes for those who WC in GW33 compared to those that do it in GW36

Yeah thats an important point. But whenever if falls I don't see how it could be bad for those using their WC before GW34. We are planning for them to have a blank in GW35 anyway and if they don't then thats great for us. The key is whether it gets announced during the international break. I guess we'd be hoping for news before GW32 kicks off in just over two weeks time.

For me if the worst case scenario happens and we don't know by GW32, I'll simply hang onto Mahrez for an extra week and be prepared to sell him for Barkley if it gets announced before the DGW. Having the floating transfer is key here. Those who WC in GW33 won't have this luxury as they have to save their FT in the week leading up to the DGW. It wouldn't be ideal for them if the Everton Fixture gets announced at that time and they are unprepared.

If you're set on using your WC before GW34 then its worth considering. If you're seriously considering a late WC in GW36 then I definitely understand.

Interesting idea, but the risks far outweigh the benefits IMO, especially for those who have strong teams now and 2fts for next week.

I feel like having 2fts means I can really attack next week too before I wildcard, so I think I'll save it for 33.

The thing with a WC is that an injury to a key (expensive) player could cause a HUGE change which you won't be able to compensate for. Sure you can transfer them out with a FT the following week but you won't necessarily be able to optimize your 15.

Thanks for this article -- counterintuitive and very helpful approach here. I don't have a wild card so the decision isn't as urgent for me, but it did get me thinking that too much focus on winning the DGWs without thinking through the other gws could be detrimental. I hadn't looked too carefully at 32/33 so this piece definitely helped. Cheers.

I was just looking how the price of Firmino is going to rise tonight, then I got the same idea, looked on the website, found the article and now I am sold, wildcarding tomorrow evening. Thanks, Ryan!
The key for me is that if I look at the potential team I was going to get in week 33, it will probably behave quite similar to my own team in 32 (I am on the home side in Liv-Spurs game, or basically - any game between two strong teams, it is a 1x game). My only problem is - no money for Smalling and I am not sure whether Rojo is nailed, but I can live with that, and I have two weeks to solve it without the constant pressure of price rises.

I have seriously thought about it. My team value is a decent 109.3, but I always have TV-envy, and seeing Lukaku, Payet and Firmino rise in price over the international break will be tough.
I'm still leaning towards waiting, however. Getting a better idea of ManU (or Liverpool's) back line may be worthwhile, to say nothing of injuries and suspensions.
Great article. Food for thought, as long as I don't think for too long...

Had a low TV myself so it makes sense to jump the gun early. Already cashed in on the Lukaku rise and will be playing the value game over the international break. I also discovered I can bench all 3 of my Liverpool assets and Lukaku too if I want. The rest of my WC squad will have very good fixtures.

The idea of a gameweek 32 wildcard is an interesting concept but I personally don't see agree with this idea at all. Perhaps a host of injuries will happen to change my mind but as it stands there's no chance of it being useful in my opinion.

Liverpool may well do fine at home to spurs but it is a fixture that is very easily hard enough for me to not exactly rush multiple influences in my side.

There is a slight issue with playing Alli and Kane but I feel that most good teams should be able to easily bench Alli if they want anyway. I am personally fine with playing Kane because he can get points against anyone and to be honest there's no-one in gameweek 32 that is tempting. If Costa were around then maybe.

The price changes and injuries are the only real benefit here. Injuries may not happen at all or even may happen afterwards when you have already used your wildcard. I also don't think price changes at this stage of the reason is enough of a reason to shove people in. Then again my TV is 111.9 so maybe this isn't the case for everyone.

You can bench the Liverpool assets. To me Firmino is the only Liverpool attacker worth having and the other two will be Mignolet and Sakho whom I will bench for this fixture.

Yeah it depends on the situation. My issue with it is that Liverpool and Everton are both weak so that's pretty awkward. It is definitely a possibility for those that cant get Payet back in without a hit like yourself 😉

What about the debacle of the GW33 fixtures. Maybe of the decent DGW34 teams have tough fixtures. It could be a low scoring affair I think for those playing a wildcard in either 32 or 33

That's another argument altogether. With this article I'm merely promoting an alternative to 33.

I think if anything this strengthens the argument for a gw32 wildcard, if you feel gw33 is low scoring then why would you not strengthen one week earlier and guarantee (as much as possible) that you avoid the injuries.

Eitherway, I don't really see the issue with gameweek 33s fixtures. West Ham vs Arsenal and Spurs vs Utd are the only real issues and I feel there's goals in the former. If you decide to keep Kane, he's at home and on form. What's the problem?

In my case, I'm going gw33 for sure, I want as much information as I can before I pull the trigger. I had a good week in 31 but came out of it with more questions than answers. Coutinho anyone? Sturridge maybe? Sanchez? Are City actually a red herring?

Then again, I'm a boring git!

    Wildcard active!

    Cech
    Gomes

    Bellerin
    Sakho
    Azpilicueta
    Reid
    Simpson

    Payet
    Antonio
    Ozil
    Coutinho
Mahrez still but tempted for Willian

    Kane
    Aguero >> Lukaku in GW36
    Pelle >> Deeney/Ighalo in GW36

    Gives me;
    GW32 - 11
    GW33 - 11
    GW34 - 11, 10 DGW
    GW35 - 11
    GW36 - 11 - 2 transfers
    GW37 - 11, 9 DGW
    GW38 - 11

    Any comments?

Ok, Guys, since this article helped me decide on a WC, I will be happy to get an advice here...
      What is better?
      A)Ozil+Martial/Rashford+Yaya,
      B)Welbeck+Lingard + KDB, or
      C) Welbeck+Mata+Silva?
I am leaning the second, but...I feel that I might be losing value if KdB is not ready and I take Silva instead.

Antonio? I would take somebody else, one of WH is enough...Also, are you convinced on Gomes? I do not see Watford getting any clean sheets even in the DGW, while Robles might get some and have a double or two or three 😉

      1. Kun Tozser

Gomes is really in preparation, if I do a BB in GW34 he has wba whm and if I don't he won't play until GW36 then it's AVL, liv & nor in 37 and SUN in 38 - you don't see a clean sheet there? Robles has similar fixtures but not quite as good and I fancy Tim to get a game or 2 before he leaves in the summer.

Antonio has CPL in 32, lei WAT in 34 and then is ready for 36, 37, 38

Kun + Antonio could become Lukaku and KDB but that would depend on any news on KDB, think I still fancy Kun + Antonio

Thats when the floating transfer comes in handy. Save it until just before GW34 commences (you'll have 2FT's by then) Use one of the transfers and save the other one for GW35

I don't like reposting but I see some good names in here this morning so new opinions would be nice:

Ok, getting close to my final decision, injuries permitting to my wc team.

This gives me: 13 dgw 34 players (bb)
    11 gw 35 players
7 dgw 37 players (tc) (but with 4 ft to use before dgw 37 so potentially 11 dgw 37 players)

    Robles / elliot

Jagielka, Bellerin, Moreno, olsson (wba), Gabriel

    Firmino, Milner, mahrez, payet, ozil

    Lukaku, Kane, Aguero

    0.0Itb left

For gw 32 will play willian and swap for firmino in gw 33

Thanks in advance for your opinions

It's shows your hand a week early which in my opinion is a bad move someone wildcarding in 33 could effectively copy your full team and still play a chip in 34.

If your chasing down a mini league leader it's basically season over if they still have their second wildcard and chips etc.

    So i don't have the luxury of a WC - this is my situation;

    wk 34 - 8 DGW'ers (with 2 more transfers, from Man Utd/West Ham/Liverpool/Everton)

    wk 35 - 4 blanks

    wk 37 - 8 DGW'ers (with 2 more transfers, from the 4 teams above & Chelsea/Sunderland)

Arsenal have good fixtures for 34 DGW, but investing in more Arsenal means one less DGW in week 37.

Is it worth a hit for a player with no DGW in week 37?

The new fixture announcement makes it even better to consider a GW32WC. The floating transfer could be used to get rid of Bolasie after his good DGW33 for an extra Liverpool midfielder (after their fixture against Spurs).

Lukaku's DGW33 is very nice and is an excellent TC option. Something those who plan to WC33 cannot do.

Consider Mitrovic or Ighalo/Deeney for that last spot. Not sure Lennon is a good bet. I prefer the secure game time of Barkley personally and his stats are better. Otherwise pretty decent team.

Hello, here's a little bit stupid question, but as I am inexperienced in the game and my english is poor, I don´t understand the rules very well:

If I use my wildcard tonight (sunday) can I make "infinite" transfers till next saturday? Obviously to get advantage from players price rise and fall but to assure no one is injured on saturday.

Thanks a lot, you have a great community here.
