Olivier Giroud returns to the scoresheet to nudge Arsene Wenger, Riyad Mahrez takes to the international stage to maintain his form, while Rafa Benitez counts Fabricio Coloccini out of Newcastle’s looming Canaries clash…

Giroud offers reminder

Olivier Giroud volleyed home from close range as France enjoyed a 3-2 win over Netherlands in an emotional night in Amsterdam, as fans and players remembered the recently deceased Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.

The Scout Says: In light of Danny Welbeck’s return from injury, Olivier Giroud has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, starting just one of the Gunners’ last four league ties. Welbeck, meanwhile, has repaid the faith invested in him by Arsene Wenger, notching three goals and one assist in three starts and two cameos. Priced at 7.3, Welbeck certainly represents an alluring option if he was guaranteed to start up top for both fixtures in the Gunners’ double Gameweek 34 (CRY, WBA). However, the fact he’s still not completely shaken off his knee injury and faces obvious competition from Giroud heightens his rotation risk during a period in which Arsenal embark on three matches in eight days.

United Pair Lay On Goals

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay earned assists for their respective nations as France secured an away win over Netherlands.

The Scout Says: In terms of harnessing Manchester United’s attacking potential in their double Gameweek 34 (AVL, CRY), Martial is our preferred selection at present. Although the 7.6-priced Frenchman failed to score in his previous three league starts, only four forwards have amassed more shots on target (five) in their last four outings. Marcus Rashford (three goals in four) catches the eye by virtue of his 4.5 valuation, yet Wayne Rooney’s imminent return negates his security of starts. Ultimately, Louis van Gaal’s side are still struggling to gain any attacking momentum (two goals in three) but will be confident after their Manchester derby victory and could well flourish against an Aston Villa outfit that has conceded more goals than any other side (59) and a struggling Crystal Palace side that is without a clean sheet since Gameweek 19.

Willian Back Amongst The Returns

Willian laid on the assist for Douglas Costa’s opener in a 2-2 draw between Brazil and Uruguay in their World Cup Qualifier.

The Scout Says: After delivering returns in just two of his last ten league appearances, Willian used Brazil’s qualifier to get amongst the assists once more. Despite drawing three successive blanks in the league, Willian has posted some impressive numbers across his last four outings, ranking second among Chelsea’s midfield for attempts (seven) and joint-second among all his counterparts for key passes (17). While Chelsea are not treated to a double Gameweek 34, their upcoming trip to Aston Villa could encourage Gameweek 33 wildcarders to secure a differential from the champions’ squad, with Willian a clear option.

Mahrez Figures in Algerian Rout

Riyad Mahrez continued his rich vein of form by earning a brace of assists for Algeria in a 7-1 rout of Ethiopia in their African Cup of Nations qualifying tie.

The Scout Says: Coupled with two goals in three league starts, Mahrez’s growing influence on the internationals stage acts as a timely reminder of the dangers of selling him in the pursuit of extra double Gameweek 34 assets. Mahrez tops the Fantasy Premier League ranks for points per game with a 7.2 average, illustrating his capacity to outscore potential replacements in a single outing. Moreover, the Foxes enjoy a promising home tie against Swansea City in Gameweek 35, which would put non-owners in a nerve-shredding scenario.

Coloccini Set to Remain Sidelined

Rafa Benitez revealed that Fabricio Coloccini is still contending with a calf complaint and is unlikely to be passed fit for Newcastle United’s crunch trip to fellow strugglers Norwich City in Gameweek 32:

“I think Norwich will be too close for him. He is undergoing treatment and he is improving but when you have been away for a while. You need to time to have match fitness again.”

The Scout Says: Assuming Daryl Janmaat can recover from the knee knock that forced him to withdraw from the Netherlands squad, the marauding right-back remains the choice route into the Magpies’ rearguard ahead of their double Gameweek 34 (SWA, MCI). Aside from being the most secure starter, Janmaat ranks joint-seventh among defenders for shots on target (seven) and joint-tenth for key passes (22). Newcastle managed just one clean sheet in their last 15 outings but have seemingly tightened up under the guidance of Rafa Benitez – they’ve yet to conceded a “big chance” with the former Liverpool boss at the helm. While that could bode well for the vital trip to East Anglia, Coloccini’s prolonged absence will come as a blow and those considering Janmaat for Gameweek 34 will be eager for the Argentine to make a return to at least offer Benitez more options in his troubled back four.

Crystal Palace and West Brom are plum fixtures for a Sanchez explosion. It's a big gamble sure, but guaranteed to start both barring injury and 10% ownership would see an almighty green arrow if he does manage to net in both games. For chasers, he's ahead of players like Welbeck, KDB, Coutinho, Rashford etc.

Ozil. Simples. Why would you even consider Sanchez? Done barely anything and for such a high price.

      Go with Ozil's consistency.

Current crowd on Ozil. Nice to hear that. Was almost getting blinded by the Sanchez love. His pull is strong when he starts getting those bits of points. I fondly remember him getting a hatty as captain, maybe things ending well are better than trying to rekindle the romance of yesteryear when the fire within has been lost.

      Cheers all

Just remember pretty much everyone will have Ozil whether by FT or WC inclusion, so you're not going to gain much by any haul he gets. Higher up the rankings you go the more important Ozil gets in my opinion, players wanting significant jumps and are prepared to take risks should look elsewhere given he's likely to be 3rd most expensive player in peoples squad with 1st or 2nd highest ownership amongst playing teams.

Repost because no replies, first WC draft:

    Elliot - DDG

    Bellerin - Koscielny - Ward - Jagielga - Sakho

    Payet-Firmino-Lennon-Özil-Mahrez

    Deeney-Aguero-Lukaku

Any ideas for improvements? 0.7 ITB.

Would rather have Klose or Simpson in that price bracket than Ward. Palace have terrible defensive fixtures on the whole even with a couple of DGW's.

I think you are right about Ward, and also about the rotation risk of Lennon. Who then would be a better option in that price range? Bolasie? If I got Simpson + Bolasie that would leave me with 0.6 ITB.

Similar to mine. Mahrez to Cabaye? Also Smalling and Robles is similar price to DDG and Jagielka. Smalling more goal threat with fixtures?

Same Rob+Smal vs Ddg+Jag situation. Actually think ddg and Jags will score more owing to Jags greater affinity to BPs but going with Robles Smalling because Smalling allows me a move to Ivanovic for gw35 rather than having money tied up with keeper

Thanks for the replies, very good points. Think I might go for the Smalling + Robles route. I'm hesitant to drop Mahrez because I've had him since GW1, so will lose alot of value, + he has a game in GW35. Luckily there is still time to think these things trough!

Leicester next 4 reads (SOT sun WHM SWA). Can definitely see ~3 CS in there.

Is doubling up their defense too much?

Or better to spread the risk with Newcastle defender who obviously have an extra game in hand?

        Are you on WC Jaf?

I wish I can monitor one week with Newcastle vs Norwich but I am on WC now so won't waste an FT over Elliot Bellerin or Cech Simpson. Newcastle are definitely tightening up and Rafa is known for that.

I might just trust Newcastle in the end. More exciting too with DGWs and all..

Was set last night on DDG/Elliot combo but now rethinking on the grounds of not liking Elliot's 35 fixture..

    Now tempted to go Cech/Robles.

Means no Kos/Bellerin but I could then get Smalling?

    Dawson: GW35 tot, GW36 WHM
Situation: 1FT in gw35 (using 1FT in GW34 for dgw)
My defence (in gw35): Cech, DDG*; Toby, Fuchs, Cresswell*, Clyne*.

    1. What to do with Dawson in gw35:
    A. Save FT and play him
    B. Chelsea def (bou, TOT, sun+liv, LEI)

    2. Assuming if I choose option A, gw36 Dawson to:

    D. Ake (AVL, liv+nor, SUN)

Yup, just hope they lose to Arsenal and Everton so that they're still not mathematically safe on the table before the DGW arrives

That would mean they'd have to give it their all against West Brom and the Hammers to have some breathing space for the last 3/4 games

Ighalo has been a brilliant player all season but has gone off the boil recently , Bolaise has the potential to be an excellent player he is just missing a bit of quality in the final third . Dann has 5 goals which is quite high for a defender . I think the rest have been poor picks all season and I wouldn't want them under normal circumstances

5 efforts inside the box by Moussa Sissoko over the last two Gameweeks is joint-top amongst midfielders. This coincides with the arrival of Rafa Benitez, who has handed the Frenchman license to raid forward time and again – indeed, Sissoko also leads the way for touches inside the opposition area (15)

The thing is, if Sissoko is not in the top of that Chancers table, which he really can be, Newcastle do badly. Shelvey is only a part-time corner taker.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Everton and Palace double trouble

For Everton's triple double (GWKs 33, 34 & 37) we all know that Lukaku is looking like the must have player. But given Everton miss GWK 35 are any of his team mates worthy of investment?

Lennon and Barkley look the best midfield options. But investing in one of them and Lukaku means you are also tied to Lennon/Barkley for most of the remainder of the season. This means you will have to play at least four at the back in GWK 35 and you have to carry him through GWK 36 as well.

And what of the defenders, who can't keep clean sheets? Is Robles really worth investing in. Surely Howard will earn one start during this most hectic of periods for Everton.

For Palace are any of their assets worth investing in? Even if fit is Wickham really worth ditching Kane for?

And what of their defence? Is the hope of a goal from Dann enough to justify the outlay. Are any of the midfielders worth investing in, or are they living off reputation of former glories (Bolasie and Cabaye especially).

Probably going to opt for Robles, an EVE mid and Lukaku on GW32 WC. Steering clear of Palace. Then swap the midfielder for a Liverpool one for GW34. Will have Migs as my other keeper so will play him in Gw37 (and probably every week apart from gw33) rather than Robles in case of Howard cameo

I am doing a cheeky little punt on Robles, before I chuck him out for Gomes, as I currently have the injured Hart.

I already have Hennessey and Lukaku so I may as well hold on to both of them now, as would most players who already have one or both of that pair.

Everton are quite attacking, so if you can afford to bench them in GW35 then one of Lennon or Barkley looks reasonable.

As far as Palace are concerned I think Dann is worthy of investment as he's Palace's best goal threat. Palace potentially being dragged into the relegation battle should mean they have to try and win games so they should create some goal scoring opportunities for Dann.

Other than those players I really can't see much else to want from those 2 teams.

If Howard starts a game it will be the final home game of the season which would be gw38. Robles should be fine for all the double gameweeks.

No Palace for me. They have shown nothing till now whether by eye-test or by stats. Getting their players would be a dart-in-the-dark, something might just stick, but you are praying rather than expecting.

Currently feeling 2 Everton. Robles + Lukaku

Could go up to 3 consisting of Lukaku + Robles + Barkley which would seemingly be the ideal combo provided it does not mess up the GW35 turnout of your team.

      Hennessey, Bolasie and Lukaku here

2 palace to capitalise on the two home fixtures, plus if their season picks up from there (Pards is streaky!) there could be a benefit to having Yannick. Explosive, too.

Will be removed in 35 but worth a double double punt.

Hennessey just cos I prefer him to Robles in terms of pure fixtures.

Thinking of wildcarding this week now.

Hennessey, Dann, Coleman, Barkley & Lukaku for the GW33 double.

      Then ditch Dann GW34.

I wonder if we changed the names of the players and the clubs just how much this HT would resemble posts from previous years at this time.

I don't know how anyone could resist Everton -- three DGWs in six gws is the stuff FPL dreams are made of. A hit or two in gw35 could cure all that ails your team.

Everton have nothing to play for really, but two consecutive DGW's and enough quality in the squad makes me want to triple up on them. Jags+Lukaku+Barkley ( or Lennon). CPL have such bad fixtures in 34 and are so poor I'll ignore them

With 2FT's you can have 6Blank GW35 players. Just use the 2FT's to bring in Chelsea and Sunderland players (game in GW35 and a DGW). So you don't necessarily lose out by having more than Lukaku and Payet in your attack.

Okay so I'm going with 2 LIV and 2 MUN defenders on WC

This is the safest combination for 22.2m right?

    Smalling (6.5), Rojo (5.0), Clyne (5.2), Sakho (4.7)

Leaves me 0.8m in case Darmian/ Skrtel looks safer

The man Utd team defensive stats don't look that good though. They are second only to AVL for shot conceded....I have avoided man Utd defence for this reason. I know their dgw opponents are very easy but can we ignore the stats?
