The ICC World T20 moves into its third phase from Tuesday (21st March). This takes a look at the fixtures and offers those playing the game a new article for cricket discussions.

Fixtures

22nd March, Tuesday  –  New Zealand Vs Pakistan, Mohali

23rd March, Wednesday –  England Vs Afghanistan, Delhi & India Vs Bangladesh, Bengaluru

25th March, Friday – Pakistan Vs Australia, Mohali & South Africa Vs West Indies, Nagpur

26th March, Saturday – Bangladesh Vs New Zealand, Kolkatta &  Sri Lanka Vs England, Delhi

27th March, Sunday – Afghanistan Vs West Indies, Nagpur & India Vs Australia, Mohali

28th March, Monday- South Africa Vs Sri Lanka, Delhi

Discussion Points

  • From this we can see that New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh play early on and their fixtures end early. So it would be good to load their players and save on some transfers.
  • Feroz shah kotla (New Delhi), Eden Gardens  (Kolkata), Chinna swamy (Bangalore) are slow pitches. But Mohali,Chandigarh is a little bit fast, skiddy, bouncy and grassy.

      Its a batting pitch. I'd prevent Raina or Ashwin. Faulkner is a thought. I have Khawaja from before. I will get 4 players for that match including Khawaja. Rest 3 maybe Watto, Kohli/Sharma and Warner/Kohli/Sharma/Smith.

              375. As you said above, it's going to be harder to move as the options narrow and people are drawn to the same players. Pretty much relying on people sleeping through the deadlines 😀

              I'm always happy to take a calculated risk on captaincy though, as per Willey.

                I had Dilshan(C) my worst captain score all tournament... scored 2x 2pts!

                How you set up for the Ind vs Aus game? I'm expecting to drop like a stone, unless I can nail a big captain score... as I have no players for it, and only 2 transfers remaining.

                Relying on a big score from my players in this game (doing well so far), a big captain score in the next and then hopefully my 4 Sri Lankan assets will do something against SA, now that it's a dead-rubber.

                  I kept Khawaja, and have 4 transfers. I will probably burn 3 on it. I'm struggling to really identify Indian assets that I want though. Sure, Virat is a beast but not in form. I'd certainly rather have Watson. No brainer. From there, I'm not sure. Have to have a look at the pitch and toss result.

                  I have QdK, Dilshan, Herath for the last game so will probably just add Morris or one of the Saffer bowlers depending on pitch. We'll have to see what team is put out, but Morris seems like a real competitor so I think the fire will still burn for him.

                    Grand Tribauto reckons it's a batting wicket, but the Indian ground staff have been doing all they can to assist the spinners for India - could they turn a batting track into more of a spin-friendly wicket overnight??

                    I'm pretty set on getting Raina(C)... class batsmen at his best, very good fielder and has the chance to bowl when required (perhaps not so much at this ground if GT is correct).

                    I would then look at Kohli as an Indian batsmen or Ashwin as a bowler... I'm trying my best to ignore Aus players as I desperately want India to win.

                      I feel that the Australia batsman are more predictable, which is why I would probably feel more confident backing a specific option. Raina will probably only get 1, but that hasn't stopped him taking a wicket in the last 2 games.

                      I am considering Ashwin of the Indian bowlers, but will *probably* look elsewhere

                        Yeah, Khawaja especially... been solid as a rock! I love Warner as well, especially when opening but I've favoured Khawaja with Watson in this tournament whenever I've had to choose.

                        Just having a batsman at the top of the order getting a bowl is a big advantage I feel - gives you an extra out if he doesn't score well with the bat.

                        Would you rather 1 of Kohli/Ashwin or ABD/Tahir in the last? I think Tahir could rip that SL batting order apart... I may just get Raina in the next and go down that route

                      They are actually changing it. Not sure what effect it will have. But I might get Raina as I may not afford the pricey assets(would prefer Kohli/Sharma on a flat track unless they are changing). But not Ashwin/Zampa and not an Aussie bowler as well. Australia batting first might just tempt Faulkner.

                    I find with India and Aus, that it's difficult to nail down who the main points scorers are going to be... they're all capable of big totals, wicket and runs... but it's getting the right ones.

                    With WI, you can pretty much bank on Russell and Bravo - I don't think it's the same with Ind and Aus players... except Watson opening, but we appear to have lost that.

                      I find it borderline impossible to select Indian players with any confidence. Too much of a spread/lack of allrounders that truly participate in wickets and runs with any regularity

                        Yeah I agree. I think Kohli and Ashwin are the 2 standouts... but Kohli doesn't bowl, so is reliant on the bat only and Ashwin bats too low to in most games, it's bowling points only - same with Jadeja, who I do also rate.

                        I've always made Raina the safest (C) pick, so I'm sticking with that.

                        Yeah, exactly. I will probably go Ashwin if any Indian players. 2 wickets and I think he outscores Kohli or Raina. He has a pretty good chance of pulling that off.

                        I've captained Raina myself so not bagging that as a choice at all.

                        No problem I understand - what's right one day is wrong another day... we've even mentioned how some players (never seems to be ourselves lol) make the wrong percentage calls and get lucky at times (Watson owners when he dropped down the batting order an example).

                        I'm stubborn in my approach and I've always planned to captain Raina, so I'll stick with it. Just up in the air what I do with my final transfer.

      Dunno whether to get 2 players in the next or a South Africa player in the last... I'll probably get someone like Kohli or Ashwin to accompany Raina (pretty set on bringing him in and captaining him)

      I've backed India to win the tournament, so I can ignore this game fantasy cricket-wise and just accept a rank drop lol

          Yeah I planned... I just concentrated on other teams due to fixtures. I've got 6 players in this WI game and I've got 4 players for SL in the last - albeit they were dollop against England, they could do better against SA now that it's a pressure-free dead rubber game.

          I'm on 366pts in this game at the moment and currently ranked 41st in the world... so I'm expecting to rise after this game and then drop after the next... just a matter of how big the drop is, I guess ha ha

    5 transfers left.

    Currently have

    Mathews, Chameera, Perera, Herath. De kock and Khawaja.

    What should the distribution be like. I'm thinking IND vs AUS will be a huge one since its totally a quarterfinal. South Africa vs SL will likely be a dead match as none of them have nothing to gain there. I'm inclining to use 4 today and likely get Villiers/Punt pick for the next match.

        I expect a lot of changes for that match. And just realized it'd be quite easy to get the WI assets outta here as the Ind Aus assets are costly.

      Depends how you view it...

      If you're getting 4 players... you could get a top order batsman from each side and a main bowler from each side also.

      Something like Smith or Warner, Kohli or Sharma, Faulkner or Hazlewood/Zampa, Ashwin or Neha/Jadeja

      I'd go Warner, Kohli, Faulkner and Ashwin on that strategy

      Or

      If you fancy Australia to win...

      Smith and Warner (so you've got the 3 openers) with Faulkner and then either an Indian or ABD + Tahir in the last

      If you fancy India to win...

      Kohli and Sharma with Ashwin, and then get an Aussie bowler (Faulkner maybe) or ABD + Tahir in the last.

      There are many ways of doing it... just make sure you buy top of the order batsmen, main bowlers or ideally, all-rounders (don't think they're any standouts like Bravo and Russell in this next game unfortunately - I'm going Raina (C) for this reason but he's not guaranteed to bowl a great deal)

        Seems like a wonderful analysis. I fancy Australia to win, but India may have it 50/50 if they are batting first. That said, the Warner Kohli Faulkner Ashwin is the go to strategy. And your reasoning about Raina cap is why I would want to have Watto. He may not bat at the first if Finch starts. But 4 overs and just saw Aussie batting first. So watto going to come at one stage hopefully. And may get Faulkner to kill India at the end if that happens. May go Kohli because of the high percentage and Raina as well leaving Ashwin out. I am yet unsure about Smith/Warner as they have been in poor form throught the t20.

    Wonder how many times associate sides will have to impress before the ICC rethink about reducing the number of sides at the WC and get rid of the silly 'First Round' at the WT20..

      They are actually giving them no chance to develop either. Afghanistan is growing now. But 3 or 4 years back, Ireland had the same development. If they don't get to play the 'Big Boys' in ODI or T20 internationals except for friendlies with B team or World Cup matches. Its quite hard for them to keep developing.

      The first round is silly enough but to only let 1 team from those groups is even more sillier

      Hearing Pakistan will be playing Afghanistan this year.. hopefully BCCI gets some brains too

        The whole 'Associate' label is a complete joke too. The ICC act like Test match cricket is the be all and end all when a larger quantity of people consume limited over cricket at a much more frequent basis.

          If there was only Test cricket... I would never have started watching it cricket tbh (outside of the Ashes to a degree).

          Only got into cricket through T20... now I've grown to respect/appreciate Test cricket... but I'm very much a regular limited overs man.

      Try to get Watson/Smith/Warner, Faulkner, Raina, Sharma/Kohli and one more assets for this match. And try to get 2 SA assets as they would like to finish it with style.
