The ICC World T20 moves into its third phase from Tuesday (21st March). This takes a look at the fixtures and offers those playing the game a new article for cricket discussions.

Fixtures

22nd March, Tuesday  –  New Zealand Vs Pakistan, Mohali

23rd March, Wednesday –  England Vs Afghanistan, Delhi & India Vs Bangladesh, Bengaluru

25th March, Friday – Pakistan Vs Australia, Mohali & South Africa Vs West Indies, Nagpur

26th March, Saturday – Bangladesh Vs New Zealand, Kolkatta &  Sri Lanka Vs England, Delhi

27th March, Sunday – Afghanistan Vs West Indies, Nagpur & India Vs Australia, Mohali

28th March, Monday- South Africa Vs Sri Lanka, Delhi

Discussion Points

  • From this we can see that New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh play early on and their fixtures end early. So it would be good to load their players and save on some transfers.
  • Feroz shah kotla (New Delhi), Eden Gardens  (Kolkata), Chinna swamy (Bangalore) are slow pitches. But Mohali,Chandigarh is a little bit fast, skiddy, bouncy and grassy.

    I have:

    SA: De Kock, De Villiers
    Sri: Matthews, Vandersay, Perera

1 transfer left, money no issue.

    Who do you choose?

Amla? He always crumbles on the big stage but this time they are already out so expect him to score big

        This...

I'd be looking at Tahir, as you have batting from SA but no bowling... there's no better bowling option for them than Tahir.

Alternatively... I'm not expecting Mathews to play after he struggled badly with injury last time... if you think SL can win, with it being a nothing game, you could go Dilshan instead - he'll open the batting aggressively and can also bowl spin when asked to do so.

Good luck 🙂 wiese will hopefully get a bat and was economical last time with 19-1 from his 4. At the same time he might be someone they target which could bring wickets. That's my thinking, but we shall see!

No transfers left so I'm going with:

    Dilshan(C), Chandimal, Siriwardana and Herath

Hopefully get all the runs at the top of SL's order and then bowl SA out!

Dropped to 91st after the last game... I was always going Raina(C) - which was a mistake in hindsight, but one I don't regret as I was always going that route. I did however have a toss up between Ashwin and Kohli for my last transfer... I'm sure you know which way I went!

I'm just over the moon India won though tbh... one of the best batting innings I've ever seen that - I even Tweeted Kohli to tell him how good it was ha ha.

        How about you?

          Ha, no worries!

Well I was gonna go Watto (c) but got sucked in by the pitch and went Maxwell, thinking maybe he would snag a couple. Got both on tho, so not too bad at all 🙂

Lack of Kohli left me pretty much scratching around 500 still.

Not cracked the top 100 yet and I have next to no chance given the number of matches and fact everyone will be drawn to a pool of about 15 players!! Ah well, on to the IPL comp soon. Can I assume you'll be participating?!

Fair shouts Maxwell or Watson... both capable in either innings.

I should have really gone Kohli in a toss up, as his ownership was ridiculously high (like 78% I think) but nevermind... I'll claim a reverse jinx!

Still hope though... if you can nail a massive differential captain, but definitely harder now.

Yeah will be all over the IPL... although I'll be back at work then (currently on a 2 week holiday for the cricket world cup haha) so I'll only be on here during my days off and possibly on my break.

I'll be able to watch it all though, as I work in a bookies and we have Sky Sports!

Will there be an FFS league for IPL?

Yeah, both high ceilings and I fancied Australia's middle order to fail again so thought both would get a bat.

I'm sure someone will set one up. I'm positive someone will put an article up for a bit of chat. Might take a bit more pondering that one. We'll also have to re-calibrate to a different scoring system

Yeah... if I remember rightly, the batting SR and bowling economies are much more rewarding for high SR and low ECO (Narine!)... while being more punishing if your players go the other way.

Thought it was a hard pick this game, as there's no real standout all-rounder

Either had to back a batsman or bowler really - still got an over left, could take part of the tail out

and just as I'm typing this... WICKET haha

I've got Herath bowling - I'm hoping Dilshan(C) and Siriwardana get to bowl a few overs as well

Don't have any SA players so I want them all to fail miserably haha

I'd settle for 2 overs from him gladly... they haven't got Mathews today, so they're going to have to fill in his 4 overs... I'm hoping 2 each to Dilshan and Siriwardana but we'll just have to see

I would have gone Steyn over Amla as well, if it's any consolation. Tahir would have been my top bowling pick but he didn't do much either.

I'm 300 pts behind cash ML leader and I'm willing to gamble.

What's the best way to punt, ignore 1 team altogether? Leave out some big names?

    1. pompeyfan
      • 16 Years

various different strategies depending on whether you want to gamble on 1 or 2 teams or hedge your bets a bit. I am thinking of something like:

      5 or 4 NZ
      3 or 4 England
      2 WI
      1 India

then 4 or 5 changes for the next game, and 5 or 6 changes for the final

Think everyone's taken advantage of a couple of days off... sure to be back to normal in the morning.

      How's your team looking? What's your plan/strategy?

      1. Krul Runnings
        • 10 Years

        Tbh I'm really not sure.

I guess a solid strategy is:

        4/5 NZ
        4/5 ENG
        1/2 INDIA
        1/2 WI

After 1st game remove all players from losing team. After 2nd game remove all losing players from that game.

I'm chasing in my ML though, how can I take more of a punt?

          Yeah that sounds sensible.

The way to take a punt would be by bringing in less popular players with lower a ownership % - but I would only do that if you're bringing in an alternative who isn't inferior to what your rivals will have.

The best example I've come up with for this, would be Alex Hales. He hasn't done much in this tournament yet and as a result, is currently only owned by 9% - could he outscore Roy, Root, Morgan, Buttler and co in a one-off game or over 2 games? Of course he could.

In NZ's team, they've got 2 spinners - Sodhi and Santner - Ish Sodhi's ownership is 68% and Santner's is 89% ... at the start of the tournament Santner wasn't even in the betting to be Top Tournament Bowler, where as Ish Sodhi was priced at 50/1 - I'd get Sodhi as a differential... and if you want to go one further... Mitch McClenghan has only 13% ownership and like Sodhi, he was also 50/1 at the start of the tournament. All 3 are wicket takers - could Santner finish with a lower total than those 2 over a one-off game or over 2 games? Of course he could.

The thing I wouldn't do however, is bring in low % owned middle-order players who may only bat a couple of overs or who may only just bowl a couple of overs - these players have low ownership for a reason and are more likely to hurt you.

Your captain is the other obvious way to try and catch up... but again, I would only do this on players with high scoring ceilings - Corey Anderson is a perfect example - he hasn't done a great deal in this tournament so far, but is a very powerful batsman, who bats at No. 4 and who bowls every game - there's absolutely no reason why he couldn't score big with the bat and then take a few wickets as well.

I've devised my Phase 4 plan...

5x England and 5x NZ for the first game + 70k Wicketkeeper from WI (10 players in game 1)

Use 6 transfers for the Ind vs WI game (removing all 5 players from the losing team in game 1 and removing 1 player from the winning team) - bringing in 2x WI and 4x IND (7 players in game 2)

Will leave me with 4 transfers to make for the final (Full 11 players) - removing 4 Ind players if WI win game 2 or removing 3 WI players and affording me 1 'luxury' transfer to use if IND win game 2.

Think tomorrow's game is the hardest to call, so I'm hedging both teams - I think it also makes sense, as I'll know exactly who is playing... and will also know who is playing in Game 2, when I come to make my transfers.

Fancied India from the start to win the competition, so that's why I'm going 4 to 3 on them in Game 2. I've already put my players in for Game 1 and I know roughly who my transfers will be for the Game 2.

    What's everyone else doing?

I'm thinking of having 11 in the first game.

If team I have 5 of loses il take out those 5 players + 1 from winning team. And bring in 3x India and 3x WI. Then take out 3 losers for the final + 1 luxury transfer. 28 players total.

If team I have 6 of loses, take out all 6 losing players for 3x India and 3x WI. Then take out 3 losers for the final + 1 luxury transfer. 28 total.

Is it possible to get 29 players total if you gamble on who wins the games?

        Yeah I think that's a sound plan.

I've gone with Johnson Charles as my wicketkeeper and hoping Buttler fails... his ownership is now so high after that last innings, I'm happy to take a calculated risk in going without him, as he doesn't always bat in the top 4 (one of my wicketkeeper rules) and the 40k saved allows me to bring in the players I want in game 2 from WI and IND.

Yeah there'd be a way to get more players out by doing that... but you'd have to have the max 7 players from 1 team I think, which I don't think would be great... chances are some of your players aren't going to score much more than the 10 win bonus... and if you get the call wrong and they lose, I think your player numbers would plummet lol.

Hmmm... not that I know of

There were a couple of posters reeling off stats on here the other day, so maybe try asking tomorrow when more posters are on

    Okay here goes:

NZ: GUPTILL, ELLIOT, ANDERSON, SANTNER, SODHI
ENG: ROY, ROOT, BUTLER, ALI, STOKES, WILLIE

Gives me 11 for the first match. Will have 6 players for the 2nd match. And 11 again for the Final.

Really unsure who to Captain. Willing to take a punt, biggest points ceiling, who we think?

We have 6 players the same... 3 from each side actually, so good balance lol.

Personally I think Anderson - bats up the order, can clear the ropes, very good fielder/safe hands and also bowls - covers all the scoring options, just has to find form with the bat and take a few wickets (obviously no idea whether he will or not).

It seems to me the bowlers who take wickets are more solid scorers, as batsmen are needing to get big scores to counteract 2 or more wickets - I think it's probably easier to score big as a bowler. But if you captain a bowler and they do nothing in the 1st innings, unless they're a solid all-rounder or power hitter, they're unlikely to get much or a bat, if at all, so your match is effectively over for your captain - this is why I like bowling/powerful batsman all-rounders like Bravo, Russell, Anderson, Afridi etc.

Of course, if you nail a 5'fer bowler like Faulkner and Mustafizur Rahman, then that would shoot you up the rankings... it's like anything though, luck and timing are just as important as knowledge and judgement, if not more so.

    Strategy set

    5 NZ
    4 England
    Kohli
    Gayle

Only confusion right now going in is
    Grant eliott or Colin munro..

    Gut says Elliot

Would b out so have to play blind

      I'm going with
      5 NZ
      5 ENG
      Kohli
Use 6FTs to remove the losing team plyers + 1 winning team players and go with a 4:3 ratio of IND:WI Players and then use the remaining 4 transfers to have a full playing 11.

    5 NZ
    6 ENG

I think NZ will win. That means 6 players out tomorrow:

    5 NZ
    3 Ind
    3 WI

4 transfers left for the final:

    5-6 NZ
    5-6 Ind/WI

Went with 3 NZ bowlers and no anderson so hoping it pays off.

Have Munro but went for Willey instead of Stokes and he only bowled 2 overs!

Yeah I went Stokes, as he was so much improved last match. Munro has been more miss that hit though, and I thought he was more likely to fail than not. Got that one wrong, but he didn't make his 50 and doubt he'll be much of a shout for MoM.

The way the scoring system is I don't think it's a huge loss really, is it?

Went for a differential captain of Jordan (c). Happy with the catches!

Batting points too much of a lottery, although Root tempted me.

    6 Eng, 5 NZ.

Fewer really attractive options in Indian team imo, and WI, well...I'll be happy with Russell, Bravo, Gayle.

Ha, cheers chap 🙂 yeah, huge result for me. It wasn't even a great captain call, but just a successful selection in general. Some of the 15%ers really paid off. Well, all of them really.

            Rose 425 players to 250. I'd slid a bit so that's nice.

Up to 6th in FSN league, and a mere 228pts behind Mr. Tippins 😉

2 games to catch me Adam, it's possible!

The 2 Ryan's (JUGGOS and HAZARDRIOT) are 4th and 8th as well... so all set for decent finishes

I think 1st place is only possible if Killian Long goes on holiday or completely forgets there's a game tomorrow and a final on Sunday lol

Definitely possible. I will be mixing up my captains and selections a bit too probably, so although there will be some obvious overlaps, there will be room for plenty of differences.

Wow, we'd make a great little mini league wouldn't we? All around each other.

Isn't Killian No.1 in the world? My Gid, that guy is so out of sight it doesn't even seem fair!!!

                  Yip, we sure would.

I'm sticking to my original game plan, and captaining Russell or Bravo... hopefully they score massively and most people take an unsuccessful punt elsewhere lol.

He's playing with 12 men per game by the look of his score!!

Must say, having to consistently make changes before the toss is pretty detrimental to your fantasy team. It's so much easier to read the game when you can see the teams, pitch report and balance risk/reward with certain players depending on them batting/bowling first.

    Just a thought.

India Post claim Dhoni is keen on Pawan Negi. Manish Pandey has been called up to the squad to replace him, but doesn't offer a bowling option, where as Negi bowls left arm spin.

This new outlay is ok but will need a bit of getting used to. Could it not have been done over the Summer so people had time to navigate round it instead of smack bang middle of the season?

Who you guys got for today anyway? Think im going with 7 players

      Very valid point that!

Not sure what to do personally... I've backed India to win the tournament, so I don't really want WI assets to do well lol (was in the same situation in the last game against Aus and it pretty much killed my chances of a single-digit finish).

If I'm going solely on this comp... I would get Russell & Bravo and captain one of them, like I've done throughout the tournament.

India's assets are harder to call... But i'll likely go 2 from Kohli, Sharma, Raina, Dhawan and 2 from Ashwin, Jadeja, Nehra, Bumrah and (if he plays) Negi.

I think I'm also going with 7 players. I already have Kohli and Charles but will be shifting 5 NZ players. I think I may get 5 WI players as I'm trying for a differential and even if they do not win, they still have the potential to score bigger than the Indian assets. I'm thinking badree, bravo, gayle, simmons and russell. I have 80k in the bank so hoping this is possible
