In the first of two articles, we focus on the double Gameweek 33 teams to assess the merits of acquiring their chief protagonists.

Crystal Palace and Everton collide in midweek at Selhurst Park but, before that, have weekend meetings with Norwich City and Watford respectively.

Starting at the back, we will scan their squads and offer a verdict on the strongest path for investment, whilst giving a nod to some riskier options for those willing to roll the dice on double Gameweek transfer targets.

Firstly, it’s important to be realistic from the outset – our expectations for defensive acquisitions for this opening double Gameweek are low, and largely dependent on the prospect of attacking returns.

While both the Gameweek 33 candidates follow up with a Gameweek 34 double, the form of both Everton and Palace offers little assurance of clean sheet points.

Everton have gone five without a shut-out, losing four of those matches and shipping eight goals. The Palace prospects appear even dimmer: they have conceded in each of their last 12 league outings.

Despite this, both teams, and Palace in particular, offer targets who are capable of chipping in with priceless goals. Indeed, the Eagles boast the most prolific defender in the Premier League.

While Scott Dann will set us back a hefty price of 5.7, his prowess in the box, coupled with Alan Pardew’s penchant for scripting effective set-plays, makes him worthy of serious consideration.

Dann also represents a secure acquisition. He has missed just a single league match all season and with Pardew’s men scrapping for points, it’s fair to assume that he offers the best chance of lining up in all four matches that make up Gameweek 33 and 34 for Palace. Furthermore, Dann netted Palace’s goal against the Toffees in a 1-1 draw at Goodison earlier in the season.

Should Dann’s price tag be a stretch too far, Damian Delaney (4.3) is on standby to attempt to fill the void. Brought into focus by last weekend’s goal at West Ham, the centre-back can also be a factor at set-plays and actually boasts a stronger CBI (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) per match average than Dann. However, arguably Delaney could be subject to rotation in the fourth fixture at Old Trafford, four days before the Palace FA Cup semi-final with Watford.

Like Delaney, Joel Ward (4.3) is kinder on the budget and has two goals to his name, while Papa Souare can be acquired for just 4.2. Both are options, although with Martin Kelly in reserve, rotation is more of a threat in the full-back area.

There’s no obvious candidate to rival Dann in the Everton camp.

With three goals to his name, Ramiro Funes Mori (5.5) has demonstrated a similar effectiveness at set-plays but was dropped to the bench to make way for the restored John Stones (5.4) at Manchester United on Sunday.

With little security on offer from that pair, it’s left to Phil Jagielka (5.1) to provide us with a stable, if somewhat unexciting option in the Toffees backline. Jagielka looks assured of starts, although with Stones and Mori as options and Everton bereft of motivation in the league, he could even be rested for one of the four double Gameweek encounters.

Seamus Coleman (5.8) could be the key differential on show. Like Everton, the Irishman has suffered a hugely frustrating campaign but has still mustered a goal and three assists in 24 starts. With Leighton Baines seemingly locked in rotation with Bryan Oviedo on the left, risking returns from Coleman’s right-flank raids looks a valid route if you’re hunting unexpected attacking points.

The dearth of assured Everton options in defence certainly promotes keeper Joel Robles (4.3) in our thinking.

The Spaniard, like Palace’s Wayne Hennessey (4.2) resides firmly in the budget bracket and, as a result, appears to offer the optimum route for Toffees cover at the back.

The Watford trip, coupled with a home tie against Southampton in Gameweek 34, look to provide a semblance of clean sheet potential. We can also hope for save points, although surprisingly, Robles has gathered just three in his seven league starts thus far: he averages a save every 47 minutes to Hennessey’s 37 minutes.

When you consider the Gameweek 34 fixtures, Robles’ clean sheet prospects look the stronger of the two and, with Dann and Delaney’s set-piece promise leaning us towards the Palace back four, we’re currently favouring the Everton stopper.

The Top Target

Scott Dann – the most secure option in the Palace rearguard, Dann is a fire and forget option laced with the promise of attacking returns. If you have the funds, his presence at set-plays gives him a goal threat that betters many of the Eagles midfield and attack.

The Differential

Seamus Coleman – an attacking full-back who can promise goals and assists, his key stats, including penalty area touches, are all enhanced from last season’s displays. However, like Everton, his form over the last four Gameweeks has been dismal. A pricey gamble.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lennon vs Antonio is a tricky one

Much prefer Antonio (due to goal threat) but the extra game for Lennon makes it very close for me.

How about Lennon for 33 and then antonio. If not wanting to use that transfer I would go Antonio. His attacking stats are impressive even when playing in defence and should be back in midfield now.

    Morning guys

Your thoughts on this team & my transfer plans. Low TV so defence suffers because of the front 8.

    Robles Darlow
    Simpson Janmaat Sakho Gabriel Ward
    Payes Mahrez Coutinho Sanchez Bolasie
    Lukaku Kane Aguero

    GW34 - Bolasie & Kane > Firmino & Martial (4pt hit)

Can you afford Bolasie + Coutinho out for KdB + Iwobi/Lanzini?

I think looks sensible, whether sensible is what you are looking for...

I don't think defence in general is going to win you leagues over the last few games so a weak back line and keepers are fine. Consider getting in martial now to be on the front foot already and to avoid hits.

    Got to bench one of
    Sanchez
    Payet
    Kane
    Aguero

Just go with Firmino due to possible lack of minutes even if back for Dortmund?

I'd like Clyne over Sakho, but the below leaves me with 0.1 left over, and I'd rather have those strong front players.

                CS are so unpredictable anyway.

                Hart - Gomes
                Bellerin - Fuchs - Sakho - Gabriel - Delaney
Sanchez - De Bruyne - Payet - Coutinho - Lanzini

I know I'm paying a bit more, but I really like that in between the DGWs Gomes has AVL and SUN, when the fixtures are less kind for my main keeper.

                Actually.... I'm lying...

I have 0.1 left over with my planned GW33 team, which retains Mahrez for one more week before buying Lanzini).

If I move Mahrez on (and play Mitrovic this week instead), I could easily afford Clyne.

What do you think? I fancied Mahrez against sun

I like Mahrez as well vs sun. Only reason i have not shipped him yet... I really want to keep him for that game. I believe if they win this one they are the champs.

I would rather downgrade Gomes tho.

Generally i think both are poor players. Thats just me. If i had to pick a defender from LIV it would be Clyne. These two pose absolutely no threat what so ever. Its not like Clyne does as well, but he gets over the midfield line a couple of times a game.

I'd be wary of any player who makes the news headlines for his recent terrible performance (Sakho), just wouldn't trust he'd get played is all. But then I guess, who else is going to - Flanagan? Avoiding all Liverpool defensive assets for as long as possible personally

Well Flanagan certainly won't move into CB.

Ok... I just had a look, and yeah, clearly Phil Thompson has been talking for Sky Sports saying Klopp has a big decision to make on whether to pick him or not...

I'm a Red, and I know he was poor the other night, but I do like him, and I think he and Lovren are our best partnership at the moment, but I realise that maybe he is a risk now.

I may well go for Lovren... Which I could do without butchering my team. I can't say then same for Clyne.

Hi all, which do you think is better?

    A.
    Darlow MIGNOLET
    Bellerin Reid DARMIAN Simpson S.Taylor
    Coutinho Sanchez MAHREZ Ozil Payet
    Luk Martial Kun
    0.1 ITB

    B
    Darlow DDG
    Bellerin Reid SAKHO Simpson S.Taylor
    Coutinho Sanchez LENNON Ozil Payet
    Luk Martial Kun
0.7 ITB (which can be used to upgrade Taylor or Darlow)

The main issue I have with B is obviously transferring Mahrez out. Mahrez has good fixture GW33 and 35. Also I will have more problem fielding 11 GW35.
What do you guys think? Or any other suggestion?
    Many thanks in advance.

Leicester really aren't offering much in attack. That was my rationalization for getting rid of Mahrez anyway. I also prefer DDG for man u defense, because he's the only one whose guaranteed to start both games, apart from Smalling. Also, I think most will be taking a hit for 35, so there's that.

More because of the way team was set up.Kun had to drop deep. Expect Pelle to sort that out. And KdB, Silva and Kun playing together can only improve. City have a good chance in CL but need points in PL as well. Pelle will sweat these guys. He has no worries about injuries post this season!

With all of his dropping deep he still didnt get the ball enough. Posed 0 threat bar first 20 seconds. There is a big chance that Kane outscores him for the remainder of the season...
KDB should get reduced minutes in the league in doubles, not sure he can play 120 mintues in those. I can see Nasri sneaking a start.

Don't see how Pellegrini can drop one of the best number 9s in the world.

Remember it was a champions league game too, much tougher and City are in new territory for them.

            Surely he starts against WBA

They are in new territory and thats why i think all of their energy will be focused on CL.

Didn't watch the game but fact that Aguero was non existent doesnt surprise me at all. Not worth his price tag this season. But he'll still be 13m next season because he's Aguero.

Absolutely 0 impact on the game. Didnt hold the ball, didnt move to look for spaces, just drifting on the pitch.

He's under performed this season but then so have City all over the pitch and Aguero has still scored 17 league goals... 13m won't be that unjustified!

xx will be one of Barkley/Lennon/Bolasie.

do you guys think it is crazy to go for a KDB built-around team rather than an aguero one?
Aguero damages quite badly the rest of the balance of the team and well.. I am not sure he's worth the difference with KDB to be honest. If city qualifies to 1/2 CL, his game time will be managed with Bony back etc..

Will it though? I'd be interested how often Aguero actually gets rested when fit, I'd imagine it's not as often as we make out.

Granted they've never got this far in the CL so that might change things a bit

WC for GW34 is a crapshoot imo, so many players available and so many strong players being sold (Mahrez, Kane, Alli, Sigurdsson).

Yeah this is true. Wenger does tend to stick with players in form though, and for plum home fixtures I'd expect one of Coq/Elneny to perhaps drop out for Ramsey when he returns. That being said, I'd probably leave Ramsey out all together!

My version of the emerging template:

    Robles/SCHMEICHEL
    Dann, Gabriel, Bellerin, Lovren/Sakho, FUCHS
    kdb, Sanchez, Payet, Coutinho, Lennon
    Mitrovic, Lukaku, Aguero

Save FT GW34, then GW35 Robles & Dann > 5m or less GK and PVA - to give 11 in GW35 and enough transfers for 11DGW in 37.

    Two questions:

    1)
    A) Rashford + Payet
    B) Martial + Lanzini/Antonio

    2)
    A) DDG + Robles + Sakho (no keeper in GW35, but United has decent fixtures until GW38)
    B) Mignolet + Robles + Darmian (slight risk on nail-ability)

    Is this too risky?

    Clichy, DELANEY, Sakho
    Sanchez, BOLASIE, Kdb, Coutinho
    Aguero, LUKAKU, Martial

    Mignolet, Iwobi, Smalling, Gabriel
    Bank 0.1m

    GW33: 4 DGWers
    GW34: Save FT & 15 DGWers (BB)
GW35: 2FT to transfer Bolasie & Delaney out to field 11

Gabriel & Iwobi are risky, but for their price I think they could be worth it for a plum double and no blank.

        Darlow Robles
        Bellerin Gabriel Lovren Clyne Janmaat
Sanchez Coutinho De Bruyne Payet Lanzini
        Aguero Lukaku Mitrovic

...but I realise that I have 3 Newcastle players, 0 Man Utd players and 0 Man City defenders so I guess, without mapping out all my transfers for the rest of the season to make the most of the chips, I would be interested in having Martial instead of Aguero, Firminio for Lanzini, Dann for Lovren and Smalling for Janmmat perhaps.
