Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    seeing a lot of fosu hype.
    plan was to save FT.

    A) Delaney > Fosu, take a -4 hit GW35
    B) Save, 2FTs for GW35

        people seeming to think he'll play both games, minimum 60 mins. played ahead of darmian in the epl and fa cup today, and is playing well at that

    Van Djik is my only SGW player. He has Everton (A) who strangely can't seem to score much recently. And then Villa (A) which looks a highly likely CS.

    Is it worth transferring out for a 4 pt hit for anyone? Would have 5.9m to spend and only City, West Brom and Newcastle players to choose from (due to blanks in 35/already having max in certain teams)

    West Brom and Newcastle I can only see getting 1 CS at most (Wat H and Swa H respectively). Thus, assuming just 2 pointers at most in their other games, probably looking at ~10 points at most over next 3 GW. Van Djik if we assume he gets at least 1 CS we're looking at 8 points. Thus it doesn't seem sensible to take a hit for any of these defensive assets.

    City have 2 away games to Chelsea and Newcastle and Stoke at home. So I see 1 CS, possibly 2. If we assume 1 and a half CS on average, then they'll score 12 points on average over the 3 weeks. When you factor in potential bonus points then it looks to be worth a risk only if they have a nailed on player for all 3 weeks.

    But is that going to be the case with anyone? They play the semi-final of the Champions League after GW35. So whilst players like Sagna and Clichy are likely to be nailed for next week, they could get rotated before the semi-final. Mangala and Demichellis I have no idea with. Hard to see anyone playing all 3 so looks like I'm best keeping with Van Djik.

    Thoughts this weeks lineup? Tempted to get rid of Lukaku for Martial.

    Schmiechel - Robles
    Mangala - Darmian - Bellerin - Gabriel - Sakho
    Mahrez - Lingard - Ozil - Payet - Coutinho
    Lukaku - Kane - Aguero

          My recommendations were based on the price of the outgoing players. Lanzini would be a safer pick than Iwobi but doesn't have a GW35.

        That's what I like about getting Rashford a couple of weeks ago. I can't see any of my ML rivals bringing him in now with Rooney's return this evening, but he's easy to bench and should still see plenty of pitch time with the form he's showing.

      Saving my Wildcard and bench boost for 36/37, so how's it looking for this week?

      Mignolet
      Bellerin/Otamendi/Simpson
      Ozil (TC)/Iwobi/Mahrez/Barkley/Payet
      Aguero/Lukaku

      Bench: Hennessey/Vardy/Daniels/Williams

      Two main queries I can't decide upon:
      1) worth a -4 to get in Smalling for Williams considering I can still get 11 out for GW35 without a hit?
      2) Mahrez or Vardy to start, or play both and bench Barkley?

      Any advice much appreciated

        With Copa America and Euros you might think differently nearer the time. Might even be worth missing GW1 till players get back. I finished top 7K last year and there were over 2K GW2 starters above me!

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

        That's really poor logic IMO, unless Man City get to the club world cup and have a DGW in GW1.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

          OK, here's something that isn't poor logic. 🙂

          The idea of linking 2nd wildcard and BB is inherently flawed. The 2nd wildcard is our most powerful tool, it shouldn't be used in order to support a less important chip.

          Think about it - if you got 12-16 points on your bench in a normal week you'd think that high. So in a DGW if you have 15 DGW players you might be hoping for double that. That means the BB in a DGW might be worth 12-16 points more than in a normal GW if you confine yourself to DGW players (which is limiting in itself).

          12-16 points. Is that the value of a wildcard? I don't think so.

          Next season I will use my BB when I happen to have a good bench. Or I might even use it the week after my 1st wildcard before unwinding to the squad structure I want. It won't be beyond the wit of man to find a good opportunity to play it in a normal GW.

          That will mean I can use my wildcard IN a DGW, not before. And have exactly 11 players, using my bench for players I want in the weeks following.

          Did I know this before this week? Yes. But I realised it too late, I had effectively given myself no other realistic option by holding all my chips back. I knew I was weakening my GW33 team and so it proved. Any gains in GW34 will not compensate.

          TC should be played in a DGW, no doubt of it. BB? Not so much.

          1. oghash
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 8 months ago

            If you have more than one dgw then why wouldn't you? Surely you're linking your 2nd WC to the DGW, not the BB. The bB is just an added extra?

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 8 months ago

              If you were linking the 2nd wildcard to a DGW you would play it in that DGW, not the week before. That's the first point.

              The second point is that by playing it the week before you compromise your team the week before.

              The third point is that by aiming for 15 DGW players (or near to it) you compromise your team in the weeks after as well. Rather than having 4 SGW players benched that you want going forward.

              3 compromises: the week before; lack of flexibility in the DGW itself; and afterwards. And for what? 12-16 points more from the BB if you are lucky. Doesn't stack up.

                Without doubt, playing a WC a week before hand is a major risk. Things change fast in the FPL and one gameweek is a long time in this game. Coutinho Sakho De Bruyne seemed like top buys a week ago. Lucky to get a start of them this week. Iwobi andd fosu mensah looking like must buys this week lol

                Oggie's got the nail on the head for me, the WC's worth ~25-30 points to me. Needing to make ~6 transfers (-16 point hit) or more is about the watershed for playing the wildcard. The theoretical maximum for the WC is a value of 56 points (an FT and 14 hits to change your full squad) but that's assuming you change all of your 15 players on the WC and that each move you made would be made for a hit if you didn't have the WC. Otherwise you're valuing each marginal transfer at less than 4 points, which is especially true of your bench players, and looking at before/after wildcard projections its true value comes down to ~25-30 points. So yes the WC is more valuable than the BB but that doesn't "inherently flaw" the idea of linking the two chips.

                I pretty much agree with your valuations of the BB, I'd call it at the bottom of your valuations at 12 points in a SGW and 24 in a DGW. You don't have to max out on 15 dgwers and to get the advantage of the BB in a dgw. For instance I've only got 13, but if I weren't to BB I'd likely have Kane and Mahrez on the bench in a 4-4-2 formation, having them as single gameweekers being included as my notional bench players alongside 2 dgw defenders is a great advantage over a 5th mid and 3 defensive sgw bench players in a BB and yeah I'd take that as about a +12 marginal gain on a sgw bench boost. So it boils down to does WCing the week before leave you at a projected 12 point disadvantage?

                Each year the orderings of the blanks and the doubles have swaying effects on this. For instance in 2014, there was a blank week in 29, an sgw in 30 and a dgw in 31. For that season the plan, even without chips, was to gut your team to get through the blanks, then WC back to full strength in sgw30 with eyes on the dgw31 too. Sometimes the dgws are the week after the blank in which case it would be nonsense to WC for a bench boost. Context matters on picking the strategy.

                For this season I think BB in a dgw was still the way to go about it. From your 3 compromises, 1) the week before, yes we had a bad gw this time but run it again and again and I don't think our squads were 12 points worse. We just happened to get punished by a Toby 15 pointer and a Vardy 13 pointer, two players in another run could have been as per my personal example Kane and Mahrez. It's just what you risk deviating away from the template, big reds or big greens. 2) Lack of flexibility, Okay if you got hit by 2 injuries in gw33 then your early wildcard has cost you 4 points but that's just bad luck, otherwise your team should be sorted from your picks on the WC, our decisions shouldn't wildly change because of one extra gw. 3) Afterwards. You don't have to chase the 15 dgwers, even 11 with Schmeichel, Simpson, Toby, Mahrez would make gw34 the ideal BB week to me. If you WC in 34 you're still facing the same problem of having lots of dgwers in your squad so that compromise is still there if you WC on the dgw.

                All in all, yes there are compromises but I think this season there was more value to be had linking the two chips, some people just got hit this week by the perfect storm of bad luck.

                  You are missing the main point: by linking the 2 chips and saving BB for a DGW we left ourselves no choice.

                  Many had Mahrez benched for big points this season. Or Alli. Creating a good BB opportunity in the first 30 GWs would be easy to do. Then you could use 2nd wildcard in the DGW. I am seeing people taking hits, sometimes multiple hits, the week after a wildcard. They have to be set against the notional 12-16 point gain from a DGW BB too.

                  The specific constellation of fixtures is relevant, if there were not a big blank immediately after the main DGW it would make the wildcard/BB combo easier to manage without compromise. But using the wildcard to service BB is just an inherently dubious concept.

                    I agree with the theory, Ruth. But also don't forget there was a unique circumstance this week - with 2 DGWs in succession - this has meant that a WC the week before the big DGW still means you're picking your team to prepare for an immediate DGW. So I would say that this year it was not such a big mistake (especially, as it happened, if you loaded up on defenders) - but next year it might be.

                    But I'm entirely happy with having "no choice" because not that much changes in one week of football.

                    I laid out your compromises against the additional 12 points of BBing in a dgw and came out in favour of the dgw BB still. People who are taking multiple hits this week either got extremely unlucky with 3 or more injuries, made bad choices on their WC or are knee-jerking towards the new big thing and unless they got massacred by injuries its on them, not the strategy.

                      Balders, you are calculating best advantage within limited confines.

                      I am questioning the validity of the confines. 🙂

                        I calculated expected advantage against each of the compromises you laid out and weighed it up against a planned sgw bench boost and sided on the BB34 still. If you want to my challenge valuations on the compromises or suggest further compromises feel free but as it stands you've not convinced me.

                      "Not much changes in one week in football"? Well maybe not in terms of the stats you rely on. But in the real world it certainly does.

                      Someone wildcarding this week knows:

                      1. That City are still in the CL and prioritising it;
                      2. Whether Liverpool are still in the EL and how to judge the rotation risks;
                      3. That Awobi is a more certain starter;
                      4. That Gabriel is a less certain starter;
                      5. That West Ham are out of the FA Cup and totally focused on the PL;
                      6. That Jagielka and Barkley are injury risks and that Funes Mori can be safely picked;
                      7. That Lennon, Rondon, Sakho and Janmaat are also injured or injury risks.

                      I think that's quite a substantial chunk of information myself.

                      In addition they didn't need to rip their team apart a week or 2 weeks before time in the hope of an extra 12 or so points from the BB. Nor create problems for themselves in GW35. But there we are, no point in re-hashing my arguments again.

                        1 & 2) Right, but a conservative player could have picked within those confines as each team still has some sure starters across competitions.
                        3) To me his timeline has really changed outside of Cazorla back in 36 or 37 is his biggest risk.
                        4) He was a risk anyway and we knew that regardless of the West Ham result.
                        5) Yes but they have a solid core of starters anyway that could have been picked within.
                        6 & 7) Injuries are an assumed risk of happening regardless of the particulars of the situation.

                        'Ripping apart the team early' its a risk of going against the template on another day the planners got another big green instead of a big red, its inherent increased variance from the crowd by being different but not necessarily weaker.

                        In the h̶o̶p̶e̶ expectation of 12 extra points. Hope would be north of 20.

                        Problems in gw35 are still gonna be there with a gw34 wildcard.

        For me it makes sense to play a WC before a bench boost. Normal season play you are (probably) adhering to a team structure and your bench is generally not that good....a 'fifth midfielder' and a couple of cheapo defenders. Not much point playing bench boost with that. The WC obviously allows for cash to be spread a little more allowing for a better overall squad, and with the doubles thrown in...that's a lot of potential. It is managing the GWs and issues around and attaining a balance which is the real challenge. all IMHO.

      9 of Defoe's 12 goals have come away from home

      He could well be the diamond in the rough for the run in, given how Big Sam will get them playing. I'm tempted, especially with the DGW in 37 up his sleeve!

              I hated Mansfield. Was from Sheffield hence the frequent trips back as often as I could. With my cd walkman trying to hold it steady so it didn't skip[ and the bus driver telling me off for it being too loud, however not telling me off for smoking. Which was odd.

        193k. I'll settle for that with so many WC's being played.

      False goal shouts are ban worthy on match days. So I'll give this one a go instead before bed and see if I'm banned tomorrow

      YESSS. 607,198 -> 1st overall. The wait was worth it! Night all

      I think Carroll will be a great pick for dgwk. He assisted against United as well. And I'm pretty sure he will start both games.

      I've been off the site for the past few days. Did anyone else's team follow the pattern of...

      1- Having a great overall rank before this gameweek
      2 - Using the wildcard, making a ton of changes
      3 - Plummeting down the ranks as your former team scores absurdly high

      Been a very hard gameweek to watch for me. Had I not touched my team at all I'd have been so much better off. Hoping the DGW and bench boost is going to make it a little more bearable.
