Our thoughts now focus on Sunday’s final round of fixtures as the 2015/16 season comes to a close. Olivier Giroud’s chance to shine at home to Villa, Sunderland’ survival hangover, Southampton’s in-form trio against Palace’s defence and the race for the Golden Boot are all amongst our Thursday lunchtime topics.

Giroud’s chance to be this year’s Theo…

A home clash against relegated Villa has Fantasy managers lining up to invest in the Arsenal attack this weekend. Memories of last season’s Gameweek 38, when Theo Walcott proved a deadly differential with a hat-trick and 20-point home haul against West Brom, may persuade many Alexis Sanchez owners to consider doubling-up against Eric Black’s Championship-bound outfit. With Danny Welbeck sidelined due to injury, could a punt on Olivier Giroud be the answer? The Frenchman finally broke his scoring drought at City last week and we can expect him to be handed chances aplenty as the Gunners look for the win that may yet clinch second ahead of Spurs.

Martial’s home comforts…

Passed fit for United’s trip to West Ham, the Frenchman is building in form after bagging a brace in the 3-2 loss to Slaven Bilic’s troops. Although Louis van Gaal will have one eye on the FA Cup final, the United boss can ill-afford to take any risks with his team sheet given that his side could yet finish anywhere between fourth and sixth. Having scored or assisted in five of his last seven starts at Old Trafford, Martial will be looking to maintain that momentum as United seek to secure a European slot for next season ahead of their Wembley showdown against Palace.

Tadic and co. against Palace’s defence…

Having finally secured survival thanks to last week’s win over Stoke, Alan Pardew may well be tempted to rest a number of his regulars ahead of the FA Cup final as Palace travel to St Mary’s. Such a scenario is bound to hand the advantage to a Southampton side firing on all cylinders after back-to-back wins over City and Spurs. Dusan Tadic has been subject to more transfers in than any player in the Gameweek so far after producing two goals and six assists in four, whilst in-form team-mates Sadio Mane and Shane Long also look in fine fettle as they face up to a defence with two clean sheets in 18.

Klopp’s second-string at the Hawthorns…

With the Europa League final against Sevilla taking place just three days after their trip to West Brom, Jurgen Klopp is set to frustrate Fantasy managers yet again by ringing the changes. As witnessed last night, though, the Reds’ back-up players have the form to prevail as they attempt to push for a place in Klopp’s midweek plans in Basel. As many look to part company with Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, the likes of Christian Benteke (two goals and an assist in three) and Sheyi Ojo – who emerged from the bench to supply an assist for the third successive league match – may prove canny alternatives against a Baggies backline without a clean sheet in six.

Hazard form as the Foxes roll up…

The Chelsea winger’s renaissance continued with a superb opener at Anfield last night. After scoring once in the first 34 Gameweeks, Hazard looks revitalised in recent outings and with four goals in as many matches, he’s building momentum just in time for next month’s Euro 2016 tournament. Having fired the title-deciding goal in each of the last two seasons now, he seems to me reveling in the limelight and a home encounter against champions Leicester could see him rise to the occasion yet again in Guus Hiddink’s final match in charge.

Townsend and the Magpies at home to Tottenham…

Sunderland’s win over Everton last night gives Newcastle no more than pride to play for as they entertain Spurs before falling through the relegation trap door. Unbeaten in four home fixtures under Rafa Benitez, the Magpies will attempt to go out with a bang, though, as they try to convince the Spaniard to remain at the helm for next season’s stint in the Championship. With two double-figure hauls in the last three St James’ fixtures, Andros Townsend’s owners will be tempted to hold as he looks to get one over his former club and stake a late claim for Roy Hodgson’s summer plans.

Sunderland’s survival hangover…

We’d expected the battle to beat the drop to go right down to the wire but the Black Cats’ back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Everton has ended the relegation dogfight early. With the pressure now off ahead of Sunday’s trip to Watford, Big Sam has afforded his players time off until Saturday as they bask in the relief of another great escape. Can Jermain Defoe and co rise to the occasion once again or will the midweek celebrations take the cutting edge off their Vicarage Road display?

Redmond in the shop window…

A goal and two assists in last night’s win over Watford helped the Norwich winger to a 17-point haul over double Gameweek 37 – more than any midfielder or forward. The Canaries may now be braced for life in the Championship again but Redmond’s midweek showing will surely have the suitors circling this summer. Mark Hughes is already eyeing up a move as he looks to bring more pace to the Stoke flanks and another big display away to Everton’s dire defence could bring a few more admirers into the reckoning.

The race for the Golden Boot…

With one match remaining, Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy are set for a final day shoot-out in their quest to end this season as top scorer in the Premier League. The Spurs striker has a narrow one-goal advantage over the duo as he travels to relegated Newcastle looking to help his side finish second above Arsenal. Aguero, meanwhile, has netted in each of the last six as City prepare to say goodbye to Manuel Pellegrini, whilst Vardy will be desperate to get one over deposed champions Chelsea as Claudio Ranieri’s side see out the season at Stamford Bridge. For all three, personal motivation could be a key factor here and persuade many owners to hold as we reassess our options up front for one last time.

I can't believe captaining Andy Carroll has cost me a place in the top 1k, I'm now 17 points outside of it... I might take a punt on another captain to try and make it but seems unlikely.

I wouldn't now, to be honest.
Yes Everton have been bad, but their manager has just been sacked so I wouldn't be surprised if, as is so often the case when a manager vacates his post, the team decide to show up and demonstrate what they're really capable of.

If you really need to, I'd say Aguero or Kane.

There has been a lot of discussion this season over the 3 wildcard chips and more recently about a replacement for the AOA chip widely seen as irrelevant. Quite awhile back someone in the community delved heavily into the stats and produced a significant article indicating the chips were not that valuable at all. I actually agree with that in principle - and in practice both my bench boost and triple captains were disastrous - applied in the obvious DGWs! Despite this I found the amount of interest generated by their existence was entertaining and an excellent addition to the FPL game. The lessons learned this season are:

1 DGWs are NOT necessarily the best time to use these chips.
    2. The points earned using Bench Boost are likely to be higher when the fixtures fall into place and your bench is strong - regardless of number of games your players play.
    3. The Triple Captain chip should be used when you have a particularly good feeling about a specific fixture.

I failed with Bench Boost in GW34 because my bench - although strong with Leicester players - had some tough games that week. I never intended to have 15 DGW players as that could cause huge problems for subsequent weeks. That will happen every season - the idea of focussing on maximizing points in a particular gameweek at the expense of others is not a good strategy. I failed with Triple Captain in GW37 as like many I captained Carroll having focussed on Payet for all the weeks leading up to it! Every week you get double points for your captain so a triple captain will only earn you an extra single player set of points. Logically having two games gives more chances to get it right so there is probably a fair reason to use this chip in a DGW - but not at the expense of my point 3 above.

Would be interested on hearing your views.

A TC for a nailed-on player in a DGW means you have two goes at it.
You get 12pts for doing nothing.

The BB is best used when you have a nailed on bench, irrespective of DGW

Likewise TC is best used when you think your captain has an easy game or games, bench boost or not.

Just because the bunch of duffers on the bench have two games does not mean it will be a good BB

Chips are good if you use them well

Obviously you don't want to have a silly DGW team but who generally picks those players. Every time a DGW arrives, the usual players come to the fore - just look at the top 10k transfers in. Playing BB or TC in a DGW is a no-brainer. The only subtlety about BB is whether to keep 3-4 SGW players in the team.

I agree BB or TC in a DGW makes perfect sense and always will, but the success is all about the quality and nailed-on status of players and whom they are playing, not just implementing the chip.

Is it time to discuss how we've done this season, or do people tend to wait until the very final whistle goes?

Personally I'm currently on 2200 points. Ranked 15,339.
I need 20 points to match my all time highest points total. Have already SMASHED my all time highest finish, but wanna see how high I can get... optimistically aiming for top 10k.

Points total for a season can be misleading.
In seasons past, players like Suarez, Fabregas, Lampard were FPL points monsters who virtually every team had and captained. They were a source of guaranteed points virtually every week.

Not disputing this at all. Obviously your rank is more telling than your points total, for the above reason.
It's nice to be chasing something (my all time highest points) in the final week of the season though, makes it interesting even though I can't be caught in any of my mini-leagues unless someone gets a miraculous 100+ haul.

I remember GW38 a few seasons back. Sturridge scored a hattrick in GW37 and faced QPR at home on the final day. Obviously an overwhelming armband favourite. But he failed to get a single shot on target. Lukaku scored a hattrick off the bench at Old Trafford for West Brom.

GW38 is the weirdest GW of the season.

Caroll to Giroud and save the rest

Thanks! I can do Carroll + Coutinho to Kun + Stanislas (-4) and field all those expensive players. Leading my ML by 11 pts only. My rival might buy Kun.

If I were in your position I would only move Carrol out. If he buys Kun chances are it will be for a hit as that usually involves 2 transfer to raise funds. So you could well be 15 points ahead.

Thanks mate! Much appreciated. He has cash itb for the move. I don't really care about what he does. Only worried about potential Kun's haul.

I think I will just do that. A hit will only give me 7 pts lead which is nothing. Besides, Giroud can do something great.

Quite tempted to give Hazard the armband, despite being up against a tough Leicester defense.

Anyone got any stats to back Giroud's inclusion over Harry Kane?

That's what I'm thinking. I've got Gabby, too, as a leftover from DGW34, so can't even get Giroud in without a hit.

PVA was struggling after the knock he got. Defoe might want to score a couple more to try and convince Hodgson.

i'm worried about both starting, i have cover defensively (Smalling, Bellerin, Gabriel) and wouldn't play PVA anyway, but maybe DeFoe should go.

Are you playing the no keepers chip?

      Firmino to Tadic is popular.

Your fine. Just do Firmino to a midfielder of your choice. Mane or Tadic popular here, but Eriksen and Arnie solid choices too.

48 pts all chips used behind 3rd in my ML for money anybody think i can overtake him in the last GW?

    His Squad:

    Hart
    Alderweireld Daniels Van Dijk
    Mahrez Payet Iwobi Albrighton
    Aguero Lukaku Kane

    Bench Huth,Ozil,Dann & Hennessy

    My Squad:

    Gomes
    PVA,Bellerin,Gabriel,
    Sanchez(C) Payet,Noble,Lamela
    Aguero,Deeney,Carroll

    Bench:Coutinho,Daniels & Huth

Think about doing Tadic & Long > Coutinho & Lamela for a -4 hit (52 pts if i do make he transfer) good idea or bad idea?
