We head into Gameweek 38 with many mini-leagues still on the line, as Fantasy managers seek some last-minute inspiration. This time around, Liverpool’s midweek goal hero is joined by City’s up-and-coming young striker and Southampton’s Senegal marksman in our quest for differential success.

Christian Benteke

Understandably, Jurgen Klopp is primed to name a second-string side for Liverpool’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, given that Liverpool are schedule to clash with Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Daniel Sturridge appears unlikely to play any part at The Hawthorns, which paves the way for Christian Benteke (8.0) to spearhead the Reds’ attack. Despite notching just 180 minutes across his previous five appearances, the Belgian frontman mustered three goals and one assist, with a last-gasp midweek leveler at home to Chelsea sure to boost his confidence.

Although Benteke was only granted a 16-minute cameo against the Blues, he charts joint-third for attempts (nine) and joint-second for shots inside the box (seven) among forwards in his last two outings. Taking the season in its entirety, Benteke’s goal frequency (one every 173 minutes) is only bettered by five counterparts who’ve amassed at least 1000 minutes of pitch time. The same can be said of his shot frequency (26.4), which places sixth under the same parameters.

Liverpool’s concluding match-up pits them against a Baggies outfit that’s recorded just five clean sheets at home all term. In addition, only six teams have conceded more big chances on their own turf (30). Liverpool’s attack on the road also measures up favourably – Tottenham Hotspur are the only team that’s chalked up more attempts (272 vs 252) than Liverpool, underlining their swashbuckling style away from home under Klopp.

Kelechi Iheanacho

In the wake of back-to-back braces against Stoke City and Southampton – which boosted his tally to seven goals (695 minutes) for the season – Kelechi Iheanacho (4.8) shot onto our radar as a tantalising budget forward. Having started each of the last three, the Nigerian marksman will be savouring the prospect of taking on a Swansea outfit that’s missing key first-team regulars such as Ashley Williams, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lukasz Fabianski.

Razor-sharp finishing has been Iheanacho’s most striking attribute, illustrated by the fact that he ranks top among all forwards for shot-conversion rate (31.3%). Moreover, only Sergio Aguero (98 minutes) lays claim to a superior goal frequency (110.7). Illustrating how central he’s become to the Sky Blues’ attack in recent fixtures, Iheanacho ranks joint-second for touches (181) and second for touches in the final third (95) among forwards since Gameweek 35.

Swansea managed convincing victories over Liverpool and West Ham United in their last pair of outings, yet Man City will be heartened that only three teams shipped more goals (nine) in their previous quartet of league ties. The Swans also surrendered the joint-fourth-most shots inside the box (38) and the second-most big chances (13), obliging defensive form that could play into the hands of the league’s top-scoring attack.

Sadio Mane

Given that Sadio Mane (7.4) has recovered from the virus that forced him off early against Spurs, it would be remiss for us not to shine a spotlight on the 5%-owned winger.

Mane – who netted a three-minute hat-trick in the final home clash of last season – boasts five goals in four starts and next faces a Crystal Palace team that will surely be shuffled ahead of their FA Cup final date with Manchester United next weekend.

Scrutinising the underlying stats, Mane ranked joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (seven) across his previous four appearances. It’s also worth noting that, despite registering just 281 minutes, he accrued three more penalty-box touches (31) than any of his midfield rivals. In home matches, the Senegalese wide man ranks second among midfielders for shots inside the box (35) and joint-second for shots on target (18).

Mane has five double-figure hauls to his name this term, which highlights his potential for explosive returns against an Eagles rearguard that places joint-bottom for shut-outs (two) and fourth for goals conceded (31) since Gameweek 20. Alan Pardew’s men will certainly be tested by a Saints attack that bagged 10 goals in their previous trio of home encounters and placed top for goals (11) across their last four outings.

I assume it's because the high emotional intensity of the title race and the relegation fight; perhaps supporters are less likely to get smashed and get into fights on Sunday (read: before Monday) rather than Saturday. Just a theory.

Has anybody managed to use players from all 20 teams this season?

If you put your FPL ID in here then scroll to the bottom it tells you how many appearances in your squad you've had from each team.

I've owned players from 19 clubs but not Norwich this season. Also, interestingly I've owned 7 different Arsenal players and none of them have been Ozil or Bellerin 🙂

There comes a point where we look back and think what were we doing? 😀

Liverpool and City are actually my most with 8 but I thought 7 Arsenal without Ozil was impressive.

Gomez, Moreno, Sakho, Clyne, Coutinho, Firmino, Milner & Sturridge have all apart from Firmino graced my side with sweet FA from Liverpool. 4 defenders from the same club tells its own story I think.

Just 5 from Liverpool here, but aside from Lord Moreno's second run in my team, all have been turgid.

99 squad appearances for City players is the most for me, Manga is ready to make it 100.

As I see it the Arsenal problem Balders is being just 3 real quality players short. A real leader on the pitch combined with a new CB CDM and a 20 plus goals a season striker would do it. Not certain Wenger is the man to achieve this though.

I think this is a really interesting one that gives just a slight insight into the amount of luck in FPL. -6 points from 3 OGs is a couple of thousand places in and amongst the top 10k. I've only had one myself which I think must put me on the lucky side of the coin. I've also benched both red cards my squad have picked up which has certainly saved me some face.

      18.

Interestingly Leicester top my most played with 78 apps. I think that must be related to my success.

      Also, points hits: 52...

Been pretty aggressive...especially toward the end of the season.

Yes, all 20 teams, but only one player each from Newcastle, Norwich, Villa, Stoke, and West Brom - 3 keepers, 2 defenders, mostly for only 1-2 gameweeks. Wasted transfers. I'm not going to do that again.

Brom the only one not represented for me.

      Total appearances are:

      106 Leicester
      71 Arsenal
      44 Spurs
      43 City

A lot of triple Leicester action this season.

      3-4-3 (23 times - average 63.5 points)
      3-5-2 (6 times - average 56.3 points)
      4-4-2 (5 times - average 51.8 points)
      4-3-3 (2 times - average 56.5 points)
      2-5-3 (1 times - average 67 points)

I'm geeking out over all the stats they provide. Interesting that the highest average goes to the AOA formation, anyone else get that?

I never used anyone from Villa or more surprisingly, WBA.

ARS the most appearances at 99, however it was Mahrez the individual most at 33 (0 benchings) Great stats reading.

What is the best strategy when you're only 10-20 points ahead in you ML for the final week?

Try to match as many of their players as possible or do your own thing?

that's smart. now you only have 11 to chase and that can be taken care of by (C) and other random differentials.

      9 years, 6 months ago

Depends... dont match for the sake of matching... if you have Sanchez and they have Hazard then Id stick.... but if they have Tadic and you have some donkey that you were going to trade then Id block by getting same.

so if they've taken -8, that's 3 transfers, I'm almost sure one of them will be Sanchez (c).

just try to be a bit different, use your FT wisely and hope for the best. I wish I was chasing and not defending 🙂

Similar to the question above on strategy when only a small point amount ahead (thank you TC Carroll!) - I got one vote for Bellerin on the Q below - any other thoughts?

Gentlemen - cash league coming to squeaky bum time.. your advice greatly appreciated! Top 3 teams with differences are:

    1) Cresswell, Simpson, Townsend, Giroud
    2) Bellerin, Fuchs, Iwobi , Martial (10 points behind)
    3) Bellerin, Smalling, Iwobi, Defoe (16 points behind)

They haven't used their transfers yet (so Iwobi could be upgraded) and I used mine to do Sturridge -> Giroud.

My question then - do I:

    a) Bring in Bellerin for Cresswell for -4 which lowers gap but neutralises pts
    b) Bring in VVD for a bench player and on instead of simpson as a further differential but once again lowering the gap (-4)
    c) Leave as is and say a few prayers..

Unbelievable what happened last night, 4 players off injured within an hour.

I know, the commentator said it was the worst luck he'd ever seen a team encounter. Four injured, including our best striker and midfielder...who are both unavailable for the next leg.

Also Wed were well rested after playing the reserves in their dead rubber final league game - in contrast Brighton had to go all out to beat Middlesbrough away.

Not a level playing field but that's why the play offs can be so cruel.

It's brutal. Feels very unjust after finishing 15 points ahead and the Ramires incident last weekend.

Lost five games I think all season. That's automatic promotion form in any other year. We were the clear third best side. But to give Wed their dues, they have a great manager and really turned it around in recent games.

Still only half time though...they've got to come to our place next. 🙂

Another Brighton fan here. Would be brilliant if the last twist is for our reserves to pull it off on Monday

Everyone...but in particular Hemed and Knockaert. Playmaker and chief scorer gone in a couple of painful muscle tweaks.

Here's Jarvish with a look back at the Frequent Posters Cup and a look ahead to this weekend's final.

Feed Feo (FPL id 38093) takes on Sepp Blattered (FPL id 461736) in the inaugural Frequent Posters Cup final in GW38, but how did both make it to this stage? Here is the road to the final for both managers.

    QUALIFYING – GW28

With the top 60 qualifying from the 120 entrants for the first round, scoring 18 and 14 points respectively on the Tuesday of this midweek gameweek was not the ideal start for our would-be finalists.

Fortunately though qualifying was low scoring for everyone and a Stoke clean sheet on the Wednesday sealed qualification for both managers with Feo’s Butland (8 points) and Sepp’s Wollscheid (9 points) top scoring for their teams as both finished with 41 points to qualify relatively comfortably in joint 41st

    ROUND 1 – GW29

Feo was drawn against Krul Runnings, while Sepp was pitted against the wily Dog God It. In a very high-scoring gameweek, Feo scored a relatively modest 76, but pipped his opponent who could only muster 71 with a goal from Bournemouth’s Daniels proving the difference in a tight encounter. Feo’s score was the lowest winning score by anyone in the first round.

In contrast, Sepp was the joint highest scorer out of everyone in the first round as he amassed 102 points with five players earning double-figure hauls, including captain Aguero. Dog God it scored a more than respectable 92 in return, but it was Sepp who prevailed.

    LAST 32 – GW31

Feo was pitted against the dangerous Danno, while Sepp’s reward was a tricky tie against SAB. Feo prevailed in a 88-83 thriller thanks to Dier failing to heavily outscore Toby in Spurs’ 3-0 win against Bournemouth, while Lloris’ clean sheet in the same match gave Sepp the spoils 82-78.

    LAST 16 – GW32

Costa was Feo’s next opponent. Costa led by 2 points going into the Sunday with just Vardy left after cancelling outs, while Feo had Fuchs and Lukaku remaining. Vardy’s blank and Fuchs’ 10-pointer in Leicester’s 1-0 win against Southampton secured the turnaround victory for Feo 82-74.

Sepp also had a very tough battle against his opponent Prophet. Going into the last match of the gameweek – Man Utd v Everton - Sepp held a 3 point lead with no players left, while Prophet’s hopes rested on Lukaku. Lukaku produced a blank however, and Sepp won the encounter by a solitary point 65-64.

    QUARTER FINALS – GW33

There were relatively easy victories for both future finalists in this round. Spineless Weasel (aka JK) was next up for Feo, but Feo was always in control of the encounter and ended up winning comfortably 75-59, while it was a similar story for Sepp who earned victory by a 78-65 scoreline over Juggos.

    SEMI FINALS – GW36

The semi finals witnessed two fascinating encounters. In a battle of attrition, Feo limped to a 40-33 win against Spectrum to earn a place in the final.

In the second match, Ayew Serious looked to have a place in the final in the bag as he held a 13 point lead after the Saturday fixtures with Fuchs remaining following cancelling outs, while Sepp had to hope for something special from his remaining trio of Smalling, Mane or Toby. Enter Sadio Mane. His unexpected hat-trick and subsequent 20 point haul for Southampton against Man City broke Ayew’s heart as Sepp completed a remarkable comeback 67-59.

Best of luck to both finalists, with the winner earning free FFS membership for 2016/17.

Thanks for the update. I've put up as a hot topic to ensure it gets published ahead of tomorrow. Cheers and well done to the two finalists. Good luck.

Thanks Jonty, I feel famous! Having a dire year yet jammily in the final. Not posting much of late, partially as struggling with the site on my phone.

Thanks Spectrum, hard luck, you're a good sport, my team has been iffy so got lucky to reach the final. Hoping the Gallic stud Giroud can bring home the bacon in the final!

Hi, chasing a 20 pt deficit in my ML:

    Me:
    Gomes - (Rudd)
    Bellerin - PVA - Moreno - (Fuchs) - (Smith)
    Payet - Antonio - Hazard - Firmino - (Iwobi)
    Aguero - Carroll - Defoe

    Against :
    Gomes - Darlow
Moreno - Darmian - Valencia - Daniels - Fosu Mensah
    Coutinho - Lanzini - Mahrez - Payet - Iwobi
    Kane - Aguero - Sturridge

1FT and 4.0 ITB Any suggestions? Currently thinking maybe:

    a) Firminho -> Sanchez
    b) Payet -> Sanchez (going for the differential as I think he'll keep Payet)

What's all the fuss about Tadic atm? Will Moreno play? Defoe worth keeping? Should I take a -4 for anyone?

    Cheers!

Easily A. Firmino is very unlikely to feature this week.
Fuss about Tadic is 6,15,11,9 and has a Palace team with a final to play.

    DDG
    Smalling Bellerin Gabriel
    Sanchez Payet Hazard Mahrez
    Kane(C) Defoe Lukaku

Darlow PVA Cresswell Antonio (1 FT and 0 itb)

In my main MLs, I got lead of 3 in one and a deficit of 39 in the other.
In the ML I'm leading, guy at second has Aguero but no Sanchez. Any suggestions for the best move I could do here?
