While Jamie Vardy showed glimpses of potential during his first year in the Premier League with Leicester, bagging five goals and an impressive 12 assists, few Fantasy managers gave serious consideration to the 6.0-priced forward at the dawn of the new season. The Foxes frontman soon emerged as a “must-have” for our three-man frontlines, though, and ended the campaign as the joint-second leading goalscorer with 24 goals. That earned Vardy a place in the PFA Team of the Year and Barclays Player of the Season accolade, while the Foxes striker claimed 35% of the vote to claim the first spot among the forwards in our Team of the Season.

THE STATISTICS

Vardy hit the ground running under new Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, claiming a goal and an assist over the first three Gameweeks, before setting a Premier League record by scoring in 11 consecutive matches.

By Gameweek 17 his price had risen to 7.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but Vardy did then suffer a brief dry spell in front of goal, failing to get on the scoresheet in six appearances between Gameweeks 17 and 22, although he did keep ticking over with three assists across that period. His price subsequently dropped to 7.2 in FPL, but the goals continued to flow during the second half of the season, with braces against Liverpool, Sunderland and Everton as the Foxes lasted the course to secure the most surprising of Premier League titles.

Vardy ended the campaign with 211 points in FPL, tied with Tottenham’s Harry Kane as the highest scoring forward in the game, whilst only his Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez (240) managed more overall.

In terms of bonus points, Vardy’s 30 was outshone by both Mahrez, who totalled 38, and Kane, who managed to rack up 33. Mahrez also held the edge when it came to points per game (ppg), averaging 6.5, compared to Vardy’s 5.9, which ranked second among forwards behind Sergio Aguero (6.1).

THE PROSPECTS

In light of last year’s exploits, we can expect Vardy to be elevated into the premium bracket across the Fantasy games. A price of around 10.0 or 10.5 in FPL seems the likeliest scenario, which should see him valued around the same as team-mate Mahrez as the champions look to defend their title.

A delve into the underlying data still looks promising for Vardy and shows last season’s output was far from fortuitous. He sat second only to Kane for efforts inside the box (96 to 106), shots on target (52 to 74) and big chances (34 to 35), highlighting that he clearly has the numbers befitting a high-priced frontman.

Vardy’s goal scoring feats are also all the more impressive given that Mahrez started the season as Leicester’s first-choice penalty taker, before two misses from the Algerian in January saw Vardy take over spot-kick duties. Despite failing to score a penalty against Everton in Gameweek 37, the England international is expected to remain number one in the pecking order for 2016/17.

There is, of course, Leicester’s involvement in the Champions League to also factor in this time around. Ranieri’s reputation as “The Tinkerman” was forged over a number of years but last term’s lack of European involvement, allied with an FA Cup third round exit, ensured that the Foxes’ teamsheet rarely changed from one week to the next.

Vardy’s pace on the counter and work rate up top seems too integral to Leicester’s tactics under the Italian, though, and his importance was highlighted by the fact that he played for a number of months with a protective cast on a broken wrist sustained in September. It’d be no surprise if Vardy remains immune to any chopping and changing, then, whilst his injury-free record – like Tottenham’s Kane – is another factor in his favour.

Should Leicester remain as potent a force in the final third next time out, it may well come down to a straight shoot out between Vardy and Mahrez for our affections. With 11 double-figure hauls to Vardy’s five, the Algerian is clearly the more explosive and offers a superior captaincy option on any given Gameweek. Vardy, on the other hand, affords a greater level consistency. Having scored or assisted in 26 of his 36 league outings (or 72%) compared to Mahrez’ record of picking up points in 19 of his 37 (51%) appearances under Ranieri, his ability to chip in with returns on a regular basis may ultimately sway it for some.

Will a) Pep and b) Jose be here in 3 seasons time?

I'm going no to both. Will bookmark and post in 3 years (if I don't die)

          Klopp's different.

And if he does well, he won't be sacked. And if he doesn't do well, well Liverpool aren't going to get anyone better. 😀

I wouldn't want anyone else at Liverpool myself, he is the perfect fit. Liverpool have a lot in common with Dortmund and Klopp has the right mentality that Liverpool need, he will rebuild the time and bring them back to title challengers and European football and he will give us the foundation to do so, not just short term success...

I think he is one of the best managers in the world

Certainly one of the best managers.

Will be difficult to elevate and stabilise Pool given the competition, however.

if anyone can do it he can, he is determined and passionate. we have already seen what he can do this season with a squad that wasn't his, a team plagued with injuries and playing a ridiculous amount of games. It's obvious the man has serious man-management skills and even with no Europe I think he can attract some serious talent, also he has a track record for finding talent,

Attracting talent is the big one. With no guarantee of CL, it will be difficult to get established players, so he'll have to develop potential. He can certainly do that, but can he develop enough potential whilst also swatting away the poachers? I'm not sure.

Of the top clubs, you'd probably need Arsenal or Chelsea to fall away, as well as Spurs. Certainly possible, depending on how the future develops, but I like Conte, and Arsenal are in a decent position.

                  Time will tell. 😀

He has a proven track record of developing talent and with that provides a double edge sword of players like Can, Firm and Cou wanting to stay at the club and develop under him.

We saw Spurs fall away at the end of this season and Arsenal are masters of that! Chelsea are in a strange position, not sure how they are gonna shape up next season.

There is serious competition and serious managers in the league now, who knows what's gonna happen,

and yes Nidge his smile is priceless 😉

It is relevant cause you were saying in today's game managers don't stick around but I don't think that's true,

It brings me back to the odd delight Utd fans have over Jose, he will be gone before you know it leaving Utd with another transitional period...

Well if we are going to start predicting the future then.. think Jose will want to build a dynasty and Klopp will soon realise that in a results business and all about trophies that finishing 8th and spunking two cup finals doesn't cut the mustard against the big fish.. so there you go.. just another scenario for ya to ponder

well first of all it wasn't his team, he came in half way through a season, he was plagued with injuries and a serious amount of fixtures and he still got the team to 2 cup finals.

also look at his first season at Dortmund.

this is not a man who has access to infinite money and can buy trophies.

also look at Dortmund today, most of that team is Klopp's. Look at the respect former players give him and other football teams.

People from Augsburg were at the Europa final supporting Liverpool cause of Klopp.

The man is different, and if we look at history the likelihood of Jose building a dynasty over Klopp is laughable

          Save

A goalkeeper preventing the ball from entering the goal with any part of his body.

          Saves are broken down into:

          •Hands/Feet/Body

          •Caught/Collected/Parried Safe/Parried Danger area/Fingertip

          •Diving/Standing/Reaching/Stooping

Have 0.5 itb and need help with these transfers:

    A) Mak > Weiss (might seem sideways, but I think Weiss has better attacking output)

    B) Vrsaljko > Vida (again, may seem sideways but if they choose to play 3 at the back, Vrsaljko would lose his place, but is there a genuine possiblity of them doing this?)

Currently on the first as I have 4 other strong defenders, and it is the more attacking move. Which one do you think?

Can anyone give a compelling case for Perisic ahead of some of the other 7.5 ballpark options? His final product lets him down at times, stats aren't amazing (2 shots per game, 0.9 key passes) in a poor Italian league, not the best player in that Croatian midfield, no set pieces, blah blah. May just be convincing myself away from template as usual but I can't see why he's essential. I myself will 100% be going for Calhanoglu.

1.6 SiB/90 ain't that bad for a midfielder. More than what Mandzukic got as a forward for a stronger, more dominant side.

          No I haven't 🙂

I'm going to wing my selection closer to the time. Anybody I pick now will just be doomed to injury in the friendlies. I've had a general look at the popular A vs B questions and I've looked at the bookies odds and the fixture list but I've not put any names to paper.

FFFrog has given me your email so I'll ping you a message so we can all keep in touch.

Looking at the bookies is very interesting. Some of these sides are stronger than I would have thought. Austria and Croatia must be pretty decent at their odds

I think Croatia gives the best value for money atm, actually. If not Spain. Although, my money will be rather on the goalscorers. Even Müller and Ronaldo will give a decent return, and Ronaldo can bag that goalscorer title in the group stage, seen what a sheety group it is.

Be having a punt on a few outside bets for top goal scorer Martial 25/1 and Reus at 33's look worth a fiver for sure..

              • 12 Years

Those are punts, alright. I don't think they're worth it though.

Martial will hardly be even in the starting line up, France's goals are likely to be distributed widely amongst the players (a lot of players able to score, no clear stand out scorer), they'll play 2 extremely defensive minded teams in the group stage, plus Switzerland who should be the favourites, and I don't think they'll go too far in this competition after the group stage. They'll have to score some goals with that defence, though.

With Reus, I think it's the same problem with the goals distributed amongst many players, but in addition Müller is likely the one to hog the goals. Germany is quite sure to make at least the semis, though, and I can almost promise them to smash one opponent on the way to there.

I find it difficult to see past Ronaldo, and still at 8/1, the return is very decent. Just have to cover the chance that it's Müller or Kane instead (I don't think England will go far, but Kane has a fair chance to score a lot early on with 3 relatively weak defences in the group).

That mammoth reply took me by surprise i see what your saying and agree just see those boys as very overpriced given the groups they are in and their quality in front of goal.. Maybe. They may be a little overpriced. But that's often a trap to avoid. There will be many players with a high price that does not matter as they won't win it anyway. Although, then there's Leicester... Sheet happens, once a while. 😉

With the long ones, there are a couple of guys worth a small each-way bet. With bookies paying out top 4, your guy only needs 3 goals (mayyybe 4 with the extra phase of games this time) to get some sort of payout.

For example Janko at 50/1, and Long, Perisic, and Shaqiri at 100/1 seem to be okay bets for a small e/w stake.

Good thinking. I agree that with top-4 each way, 3 goals should be enough, and although I don't think those teams will progress far, but Shaqiri will get some shooting chances against Albania and Romania, and that French defence with Mathieu in it. 3 goals in those matches is way possible, and would give my money back 25 times. Definitely worth a try.

Me neither, but its not a high bar and none of them are likely to have a particularly hard last 16 game if they come second in their groups. So if their team goes on a run they could well be up there.

As it stands, not, but check how the friendlies go. He'll start if Matuidi stays out of form and he's better than Matuidi every time he plays, or possibly if something happens to Diarra, but Deschamps primarily sees him in the same position with Matuidi rather than that of Diarra. He will certainly have some role to play in the Euro, but atm the starting midfield is Pogba-Diarra-Matuidi.

Wayne Rooney will start his new life as England’s wide man against Australia on Friday night as Roy Hodgson attempts to find room in his Euro 2016 team for the captain.

Hodgson plans to start Rooney on the left of a three-man front-line for England’s second Euro 2016 warm-up game at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, with Adam Lallana on the opposite side.

Detrimentally for England, there's every chance that Rooney will perform well on LW against Australia. Because that doesn't promise anything about how he'll do in the Euro. If his place is confirmed, I'll put some money on England losing the opener.

It's ridiculous.. Even shunting a Vardy or Sturridge wide would be criminal but make a hell of a lot more sense than Rooney because of their sheer pace.. He plays on the side of the diamond or at the front of it or he is an impact sub for me.. simple as

"as Roy Hodgson attempts to find room in his Euro 2016 team" 🙄

Put your must-haves in their best positions and then build around them, don't shoe-horn them in any which way.

Latest Draft. Got 0.5M ITB. Hopefully it's Reus or Ozil assisting Muller when he scores. Thoughts?

    Sommer / Anthony Lopes (4.0)
    Eliseau / Gilk / Koscielny / Chirches / Lindelof (4.0)
Alli / Sigurdsson / Reus / Ozil / Rafa Silva
    Giroud / Lewandowski (C) / Kane

What is the deal with transfers, wildcards and that kind of thing anyway?

        • 12 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

        One Wildcard to use anytime.
One wildcard to use between the end of the group stages and the start of the Last 16.

1FT per week in the group stages
        4FTs between L16 and QFs
        6FTs between QFs and SFs
6FTs between SFs and the final

        -4 points for a hit.

That is an awful lot of transfers.

It may almost be best to set up a team for week 1 and wildcard for week 2 once starting xi's are a little more certain

I guess it is to make sure players can continue to field full sides through the tournament. But still it is huge.

      I have a fantasy about a European.

But FF wise I will be playing McDonalds and I think that is the case for the majority around here

And before FPL opens again we might have a few European games as well. Not to mention Euro Fantasy Football to fill
      the gap

Agreed. Altough I'm not going to take a part on Euro Fantasy. Want to enjoy footy not stress about captaincy, transfers, deadlines etc.

On 21st March , 2016 - “[On no Dani Carvajal, Hector Bellerin or Saul Niguez], there’s huge competition [at right-back], but we’ve considered Juanfran and Mario Gaspar to be ahead [of them],” The Spanish manager said.

    🙁

    Bye bye Carvajal

With Varane out of the Euros do we think Mangala is certain to start now? The only other option I can see to partner Koscielny is Mathieu but based upon caps it looks like Mangala first in queue. As Rami just got called up it would suggest he is behind those two. At 5.0, Mangala is a cheap route into the back line.
