After racking up 26 goals and ten assists in 2014/15, Sergio Aguero entered last season as the most expensive player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at a price of 13.0. Despite a disappointing campaign for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, the Manchester City frontman still managed to find the net on 24 occasions and clinches the final slot in our Team of the Season, with over 25% of the votes cast.

The Statistics

Aguero endured a slow start to the season, registering just one goal and a single assist in his first seven matches. Those that kept faith in the Argentine were spectacularly rewarded in Gameweek 8, though, with a five-goal salvo in the 6-1 demolition of Newcastle bringing home 25 points. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Argentina striker suffered a hamstring injury just days later while on international duty, and would subsequently miss City’s next four league fixtures.

In fact, Aguero’s season only started to gain momentum from Gameweek 20 onwards, when he scored seven goals in six appearances, including double-figure hauls against Crystal Palace and West Ham. As a result, his price soon climbed to a season-high of 13.6 in FPL by Gameweek 25.

The City front man also ended the campaign in strong form, scoring ten goals in as many matches, including a hat-trick against Chelsea in Gameweek 34.

Ending up with 184 points in FPL, Aguero finished up as the sixth-highest scoring player in the game, and only the fourth-highest scoring forward, behind Jamie Vardy (211), Harry Kane (211) and Romelu Lukaku (185).

Tellingly, though, Aguero did lead all forward for points per game (ppg) with 6.1, ahead of Vardy (5.9) and Kane (5.6), illustrating his penchant for picking up points if he can steer clear of the Etihad treatment room.

Aguero was comfortably the highest scoring City player for the season, though, with Joe Hart (134) and Kevin de Bruyne (131) some way behind the former Atletico Madrid man.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Aguero fell well sort of the 216 points he registered in 2014/15, we can expect him to remain the most expensive player in FPL next season. Having now scored 17 or more goals in four of his five Premier League seasons, the Argentine – despite his on-going injury concerns – remains one of the most potent Fantasy forces around.

Furthermore, the arrival of Pep Guardiola is likely to reignite our faith in City’s attack after a recent decline in output. Having scored 102 times on their way to the 2013/14 title, the Etihad outfit went on to net 83 and 71 goals in the subsequent two seasons as they toiled for a cutting edge under Pellegrini.

The incoming manager’s first-team plans could also shape our thinking elsewhere. If Guardiola hands Kevin de Bruyne his preferred central support role, the Belgian could well kick on from a debut campaign that saw him serve up 5.2 points per game – an average bettered only by four other midfielders. Should De Bruyne stay around the 10.0-mark and Aguero remain at 13.0, some may be tempted to save budget at the start of the season.

There’s also the pitch time of Kelechi Iheanacho to consider. The young Nigerian netted an impressive eight times in just 847 minutes in 2015/16 – indeed, his average of 105.9 minutes per goal was second only to Aguero for the season. Iheanacho is likely to be moved into the mid-price category but if he nails down a regular role under Guardiola, could prove exceptional value in the campaign to come.

Although there’s plenty of competition for our three-man frontlines from the likes of Kane, Vardy, Diego Costa, Anthony Martial, Daniel Sturridge, and Romelu Lukaku, Aguero’s capacity for explosive scores and reliable armband hauls will make the Argentine a must-have for many.

If he can remain injury-free, a fully-fit Aguero under the guidance of Guardiola could be a match made in heaven for Fantasy managers. Bearing in mind that the Argentine was still quickest amongst all forwards for minutes per attempt (20.5) and goal (101.8) in spite of his side’s decline in the final third last term, there’s arguably room for improvement as Pep prepares to take the Etihad hotseat.

Who do you think will score the most?

Janko. Great goal to game ratio, great fixtures.
Kane. Incredible form, playing with Alli who he has good chemistry with.
Giroud. Playing a tough Albanian/Romanian defence but has world class players like Payet feeding him.

It would be nice to see Kane play tomorrow but we'll probably see Rashford.

I'm way more excited than I thought I'd be about Mourinho, especially considering it's been all but confirmed for a week or so now.

It feels like anything is possible now. I never had much against Moyes or LvG but with the former especially you never felt like he would pull big names.

Aside from anyone he's fallen out with I don't see many players turning us down because of the manager or money now, but perhaps the Champions League will be a bit of a sticking point. We're not going to go out and get Messi and Ronaldo obviously but big names are a possibility again and if we can get 4th this year then who knows what'll happen in the future.

Just hope he can stick around for more than 3 years!

The last point is the main one. United have been built on stability. On top of that, yous have always promoted youth and tried to build something sustainable. That's Mourinho's biggest challenge.

You should be excited. As a Liverpool supporter I've always hated him, but I especially do now. He does anything to win and he will be ruthless in his approach to return you to glory. Ibrahimovic will make you title contenders too.

I used to hate him too but that was just the respect i had for him and his chelsea sides that were a huge threat to my own team and one that became even better than us for a time.. i despised his first chelsea side but because they were such a machine of a side.. just awesome they were.. i hated Arsenal back in the days of Vieira Henry Bergkamp Pires Petit etc etc etc.. why? same again.. they were one of the best sides i have ever seen to this day and were toe to toe with United for years and a direct competitor to every trophy we went for.. Same for City when they came through and won the league and started lifting trophies... fine line between hate and respect.. actually it comes hand in hand for me

Well you're going to hate Pep then his arrogance in on another level entirely.. proper bell end.. Jose can be very hard work but generally he is great fun in most of his press conferences.. charismatic and a real personality

Even if he does leave after three years, I just hope he does so with us in relatively good condition and in a position to appoint another top class manager (Ancelotti, say).

I just don't want to see the sort of meltdown we witnessed at Chelsea this year combined with a lack of available replacements....

Why would Paul be auditioning for a Premier League move when he already plays for a team that's better than any in England? If/when he leaves Juve, which definitely won't be this summer, it will be to go to Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Mourinho wants Kostas Manolas to improve United's defence. Contacts are ongoing. John Stones and Raphael Varane also on shortlist, according to Sky Italia.

Hmmm after Eden Hazardous suggested Junuvovic (excuse my spelling), had a quick look into it and if it wasn't for penalties he didn't score too dissimilar to Alaba...add that he's playing number 10 and Alaba is playing CDM, could he actually be a decent shout? Considering using him as a differential to do Alaba & Vrsaljko -> Junuvovic & Dragovic

Starting to consider leaving Alaba out of my team. Austria have bags of quality and at the end of the day he's playing CDM and might have some set piece duties taken away by Fuchs. Arnautovic and Janko look a bit more explosive.

3 assists in qualifying is only one less than Mesut. Jordi all the way.

I wouldn't ship a player because the players around him are good.
You should eliminate the German mid field for that reason

Good point but I have essentially done that with Spain, Germany and especially France. Any of the French front 6 could score and whilst Germany have quality, I only see Reus managing to out score Muller who I have up top. Alaba is world class but I have a feeling he won't be amongst the goals as much as we would like.

If Arnautovic was classed as midfielder I'd be all over him. Can't find room for him in my front three however.

How often can you change your captain in Euro fantasy football?
Is it each match day or after every team has played once?

    Bit confusing

Good differentials and Muller + Giroud offer you goal threat. I'd lose Hamsik. He might be the best route to goals for his team but I can't see them scoring many in a tough group.

8.0 for a player from a defensive-minded team, who have no big tournament experience and will struggle to get goals, is hardly a bargain... They also face very tough defences (Portugal and Austria), so I can't see how there is any value in Siggy. Surely there are some better options in this price range.

64 points in the qualifiers for a defensive-minded team is not too bad for a 8.0-midfielder though... I know they face harder opposition here but I actually fancy his chances.

He may do well, but at 8.0 it's not worth to take such risk in my opinion. If he was 7.0 or less I'd maybe consider

Some of the arguments on here and in the media about Pep struggling and more why he is going to struggle seem silly to me . I think it's gone from universal praise to consistent comments questioning his success just because he had a difficult time at Bayern ? .

Wouldn't say he had a difficult time but he took over a ready made team that were treble winners and CL winners he couldn't repeat that some see that as a failure.. the guy is an exceptional coach there can be no doubt but he has had nothing but ready made world class squads to work with and he has such a high opinion of himself that any kind of failure is magnified... same with Jose

Sergio Ramos possibly on pens for Spain? Fabregas missed his last one.

      Diego Cos...oh, wait!

Yes, it's a good chance that Ramos is on pens I'd imagine.

Just played my first game of 5-a-side in 12 months. Felt like Andy Carroll- stiff and unfit but scored a few goals.

FFS bias picking the 4th highest scoring striker in the top 3. Poor choice.

I think it is a poor choice also. Votes are heavily based on nostalgic memories of the 5 goals against Newcastle I reckon.

What do you think about this lot?

    Patricio 4m
    Koscielny Ramos Dier Hysaj 4m
Payet Calhanoglu Kroos Alaba Rafael Silva
    Ronaldo Muller Giroud

Finding someone to rotate with Patricio and a defender to sub in for Dier for 4m is very hopeful. Maybe downgrade Ronaldo.

Do you think international tournaments have a different style about them than in regular football?

It may be my imagination but it often feels to me that more goals come from set pieces

Games tend to go from being mainly one-sided in the group stage where there are easy fixtures for the giants like Germany to tight in the knockouts when there's a lot stake. There are always more goals in the group games.

    Grezmann-Kane-Muller

De Gea and Randolph play on the same day so if De Gea concedes you don't have a keeper to sub in the next day.

I am ok. This place is dead at nights at the moment I swera there was about 3 posts between 0300 and 0600 last couple of nights. For those of us trying to liven up a boring nightshift it does not help. I may have to resort to finding an online noughts and crosses forum until things pick up

You can have access to my Euro ticker though

It's more the hours I wil lhave to work. Like this week for example I worked from midday to 11pm on Monday. Back in for at 7:30am tuesday morning then nights last night and tonight. Kills me. I spend most of my time in bed.

In the day time I'm just stuck in interviews and it's too busy with too many day walkers to be watching stuff.

I would hate that. I like my routine the shifts are long but at least I know where I am with them.

It is really easy and it is in the FAQ's but:

          Go to Gravatar.com

Make an account with the email address you use for this site.

Insert a picture (you can use a URL or a saved pic)

Make sure you set the rating as PG or it will not appear

          It is very straightforward
