Dugout Discussion

While the footballing community rightly reels from the frankly unfathomable and tragic news of Gary Speed’s passing, the Dugout Discussion opens in more solemn tones in shock at this news…

Our first of two fixtures today is in Wales where, rather perversely now, Speed had been seeming to build a bright future for football in his home country. Whether many of the Welsh players (on both sides) are in the right mind is hard to tell but the fixture of Swansea vs Aston Villa will go ahead as planned. Teams in full are…

Swansea XI: Vorm; Rangel, Monk, Williams, Taylor; Britton, Allen, Gower, Dyer, Sinclair; Graham

Villa XI: Given; Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; Herd, Delph; N’Zogbia, Heskey, Agbonlahor; Bent.

The Premier League weekend will then finish with the big fixture of the weekend as Kenny Dalglish’s Moneyball squad come up against the Nouveau riches of Manchester City.

RIP Gary Speed.

Shay Given is struggling. This should not be going ahead. Watched all that with a tear in my eye. Cant imagine how Allen, Williams et al are feeling.

its not fair for this game to go along. some respect should be shown for the players feelings, if they knew yesterday then its fine, but noway they will be able to play normally now, especially the swans.

You make the game a tribute to Speed. Like that player the other week who played a couple of days after his son died - it's cathartic.

Very well put, I just think that with the close relationships held between him and many of the player playing today, a day or two to recover may well have been more suiting, the emotions they're experiencing must be quite shocking

Can't quite believe it. It was a proper "What!?" said out loud when I read it on BBC news. Can't pretend I knew what he must have been going through to have committed suicide but from the reports it seems like it was a shock to his friends and family potentially.

A true legend in the premier league and a good guy by the sounds of it.

    RIP Gary Speed!
