The second round of group matches continue at pace, with DraftKings managers again assessing the talent on offer as we form our eight-man squads.

Friday’s fixtures provide more teams who will be forced to attack in a bid to earn a foothold in the tournament.

Both Turkey and the Czech Republic suffered defeat in their opener, leaving them little option but to seek three points this time around.

The Turks face the daunting task of overcoming a Spanish side who dominated the Czechs in their opener, eventually translating possession into a cutting edge via Gerard Pique’s glancing header.

The Czech Republic showed enough in that defeat to suggest that they will still have a say in Group D, but must now look to better a Croatian side that bristled with attacking menace in their win over Turkey.

Over in Group E, Italy will look to build on a superb display against Belgium by disposing of Sweden to book passage to the knock-out phase. The Swedes rescued a point against the Republic of Ireland and will likely look to soak up Italian pressure, again relying on the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimović to see them through.

We’ve analysed the six squads on offer to arrive at another set of DraftKings targets who seem destined to make key contributions in Friday’s contests.

Ladislav Krejci – Czech Republic, – $6800
The fleet-footed left-winger provided crosses at a faster rate than any other Czech Republic player during qualifying. He maintained that record during five appearances in friendlies and impressed again in the defeat to Spain, providing 10 crossed balls. His pace and supply line looks set to be vital in the crunch clash with Croatia.

Caner Erkin – Turkey, – $4100
Turkey’s forward-thinking left-back thrived in the qualifying rounds. The 27-year-old provided more crosses and interceptions than any other Turkey player, ranked second for tackles won and even fired in nine goal attempts. Inter snapped him up prior to the tournament and Erkin duly impressed in his Euro 16 bow, providing six crosses and a shot on target in the defeat to Croatia.

Marcelo Brosovic – Croatia, – $4900
The 23-year-old midfielder contributed two goals to the Croatian cause in qualifying and followed this up with another pair of strikes heading into the tournament. It was Brosovic rather than striker Mario Mandzukic who provided the major threat in the win over Turkey, firing in six efforts on goal, five from within the penalty area.

Ivan Perisic – Croatia, – $7100
Another to impress in Croatia’s tournament opener. Perisic contributed an all-round shift against Turkey that saw him win three tackles and make three interceptions, while he was unfortunate not to claim a goal following his raids into the box that brought two attempts. The Inter midfielder top scored in qualifying with six goals, registering more attempts than any of his team-mates. A first Euro 16 goal is beckoning.

Antonio Candreva – Italy, – $7200
Candreva was a key component of Italy’s qualifying campaign, providing more crosses and goalscoring opportunities than any team-mate. The Lazio winger’s display in the impressive 2-0 win over Belgium saw his stock rise further as he tormented Jan Vertonghen throughout, swinging in ten crosses and providing three chances for team-mates, including the assist for Graziano Pelle’s coup de grace.

DraftKings contests for Friday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $10k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Those that watched the Hungary game a few days ago, where about did Dzsudzsak play and did he get into good goal-scoring positions?

I find it amusing how nowadays everybody is so excited about Perisic, because when I hyped Wolfsburg as CL place material before the 2013-2014 season, pointing for example that they had got a top level LW/AM in Perisic (compared to Bundesliga clubs that are not Dortmund or Bayern that of course had better stuff in Ribéry and Reus), about every Bundesliga "expert" told me that Wolfsburg is a mediocre team and Perisic is a very mediocre player.

Why? Because Wolfsburg had finished in the mid table the previous season, and Perisic had an inefficient stint for Dortmund in Autumn 2012 and was dropped to bench before getting a transfer to Wolfsburg.

Well, Wolfsburg ended up having a huge red card nightmare in the early season, which probably cost them the CL spot, but eventually they were very close to making the CL, and Perisic scored 10 goals in Bundesliga from midfield. And we know just how impressive that Wolfsburg team eventually was going to be.

The moral of the story is that scoreboard journalism makes bad judgments (Wolfsburg's bad results 2012/2013 = mediocre team; Perisic's bad half a season at Dortmund (after a very impressive first season) = mediocre player) and consequently bad predictions.

I thought the moral was that Camp No No is always right and that anyone with a different opinion deserves to be patronised? That usually seems to be the moral of your posts. 😕

It rather seems to be the interpretation that those who just impose their opinion on others and expect them to either take it or shut up make when somebody dares to question the rationale or lack thereof of the said opinions.

Patronising? Mate, firstly, this was in no way against you. I never said that anything suggesting that it is funny that _you_ are now hyping him after having not seen him in Bundesliga.

I said that people who effectively _did_ watch Bundesliga a lot (most much more than myself tbh) back in 2012-2014 didn't rate him back then only because of a half a season that he didn't manage to score for Dortmund (mostly because he didn't get to box enough), and him being so generally hyped (by about everybody, not just you, that I put this as a reply to you was accidental, just caught my eye) now reminds me of that failure of scoreboard journalism.

Sorry, Lucy, but I'm saying "Mate" because I mean it. I personally think of having mostly had good chat here with Hooky and have no intention to "patronise" or offend him anyhow. And that's totally my bad. See my apology below.

Of course the post also had the smug content "I was right about Perisic already back when he was called a flop" (but is it that unusual to say something like that really?), but it was simply 100% not aimed at you. I have no knowledge whatsoever of your past observations of Perisic and wished not to claim anything about that, but I should have also said that. I was careless and I genuinely feel bad that it came out like that to you.

Good to hear it's all good now. Would have hated if we suddenly had bad blood because of this. 😉

Still @Hooky: sorry, I understand now that I look at it, replying to your post like that, it comes out as if I meant that you were completely clueless about Perisic. I didn't mean that about you, but about the said Bundesliga fans. It is 100% accidental that I just happened to say that as a reply to your post, since you just brought Perisic up here.

I felt safe discussing that in a reply to you, because you are not as sensitive as some here and usually take things coolly, but I get it that that post was too easily misunderstood. Sorry for that. It was not aimed at you in any way.

I had a feeling at the start of the campaign that Rooney would flourish. I've not been his biggest fan recently but these last two games I think he's been superb. Something like 91% pass accuracy yesterday. He could well be the driving force that gets us that bit further this time around.

Sorry I dont agree, he's an average centre mid at best. He couldn't really miss his passes yesterday as Wales were sat so deep! Give me wilshere in that roll everyday

I wouldn't use superb, I don't he has flopped the way many predicted he would

And stats can be deceiving, sure he had a high pass % but he wasn't player killer balls or creating chances.

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

Hmmm... I didn't notice any superb Rooney performance during the match either, but took a little bit closer look to stats and player maps to see what they say. It seems that they agree with you, in fact.

He did create 6 shots for his team mates, almost half of all key passes that England made. Nobody else created more than 2. But any half decent chance he created was from set pieces, doesn't really tell about how efficient his passing was in play. His open play key passes were donated by desperate long shots by Walker and Dier after his square/backwards passes to them. Those corners don't give themselves, but his quality in them is independent of his on field position and his quality in it. And he created 0 half-decent open play chances. So this is in line with your observation, imo.

But he also did give more passes forward to the final third than any other English player, and higher percentage of them (of all his passes) than any bar Studge. That suggests good, util we look at his maps. He failed 5 of those, which would not be bad if it did not include 3 of his 4 efforts closest to a "killer pass". Already that is a low number of efforts to really break the defence. His pass map is mostly only "slightly" forwards, almost square passes to moved the ball from one side to the other on the border of the Wales' attacking third. Only once did he get the ball in the penalty box in open play, and twice to the "danger zone" in front of the penalty area. It is not that he was bad, but he was not particularly creative either.

Well I think he's been good anyway and you're right, Wilshere's not a bad substitute if he's in the mood. Rooney's just seems to be leading at the moment and with such a young team that can't be a bad thing.

Sweden has a good record against Italy and many players in our squad know the italians from the italian league. I think it's a risky bet, because Italy will have possession and Sweden will defend well and counter attack.

Damn I'm jealous.. Very tough to call.
Ramos is the most attacking I'd wager, but all three are capable of CS + attacking returns

So, what do you think, Lucy? Were Southampton going to sell players Koeman wanted to keep? Or was it just that money talked for him?
