The results from the first round of the Paddy Power Cup V are in, and all 512 head to heads can be viewed by clicking here. Although you undoubtedly know your own fate already, let’s have a look at how some of the other ties panned out…

Of our four previous competition winners, three progressed, with inaugural winner donnellyc crashing out in spectacular fashion 54 – 38 to kiwiphil.

Mark overcame graqfreak 57 – 48 to put himself into the next round, alongside fellow Scout greek fan. Anorak and myself gracefully bowed out, leaving just the two to fly the flag.

The top-scorer this week was Gullikgul, who annihilated Boss Hogg 85 – 38. Captain Emmanuel Adebayor and Juan Mata alone would’ve seen Gullikgul win with room to spare.

There were sixteen match-ups which ended all square, which meant overall rank had to be used to find a winner (denoted with an asterisk on the results page).

It’s impossible at this stage of the competition to find a potential winner, but there are certainly some names to avoid. The top-ranked challenger going into round two is 52nd in the world bobbyg. The only other top 100 fantasy manager in the hat is Sir Boulos (77th).

For those fortunate enough to progress this week, check back on Thursday for the second round draw. For everyone else, commiserations and thanks for participating.

    Hi Guys,

I have just sat and worked out the transfers that I intend doing for the next 6 or 7 games. Am pretty pleased with it. Do you think I am mad, or think that I will not stick to my guns and make the changes that I intend to make ?? lol. Think I have pretty much nailed what I would like to do. Can't wait for these dates and games to arrive....!!!

I used to do that but I think it ruined the game for me... obviously it's healthy to plan a little bit ahead, but you should spread the enjoyment :p

Nothing ever goes as planned, even if you transfer 3 weeks ahead you are likely to have someone who goes off form, other players who hit form and some injuries.

Do folk trust opinions when the ppl giving them are in terrible positions!

I have an outrageous idea to give my team a nice mix up...

    For a 4 point hit...

###Agbonlahor and Sturridge OUT### (Terrible fixtures coming up for both, Sturridge arguably on form but part of a rotating forward line in an off-form team)

###Suarez and Rochina IN### (Both have great fixtures coming up. This could be genius if Suarez's luck turns very soon, and Rochina is the best option with my remaining money - 5.5m - he had a brilliant game against Stoke and Blackburn could be on the turn - it's a nice punt)

    Thoughts?

I agree re: Blackburn's fixtures...until new year at least ! I stuck The Yak in for the very same reason. He was same price as Rochina, too. Think they will score a few goals, Blackburn, so hopefully these two can do something for us! =o)

It defeats logic, that's why it's so beautiful.

In past years I've enjoyed making punts and a lot have paid off... this year I've played it way too easy since hitting the upper echelons of my leagues, and it's been disastrous. This is my reaction.

I still have half a week to mull over proceedings.

Tbf the Yak is only owned by 0.9% of teams so that is a really good punt also. Rochina is probably for later in the season when people start to get desperate in chasing their mini league leaders.

Rochina's a fine shout (see the article featuring him linked in my name). I'd be tempted on Adebayor over Suárez though - but that is a marginal call.

Sturridge looks good value in fairness, in spite of fixtures. You wouldn't be mad to keep him. But you wouldn't be mad to remove him either...

    ok gents team is linked

I have 2 frees, but only want to use 1 as I plan on bringing in Ba and Barfa ready for Norwich next week. My original plan was to replace Sincs with with either Drenthe or O'Hara, but am wondering if I might be better to make a short-term replacement for Woodgate (plan was to replace him with Jags) so that I have someone on bench guaranteed to play in case VdV and/or Aguero is left out (though I don't think Aguero will be). Plan is to wait until Thurs/Fri for news on VdV before actually doing it, but just after some thoughts.

Asked this a couple of nights ago, but am still totally undecided, soooooo:

Bale or Aguero for captainship this week ?? Aguero **could** potentially start on bench, given big CL game few days afterwards. Bale on form, easy enough fixture on paper. Is a tough one.

    Thoughts....?

Shane Long worth a punt over the next 3 gwks? West Brom have qpr, WIG, bla as their next 3 so was thinking of bringing him in for Sturridge (new away). Already have Adebayor and RVP so could be a nice cheap third striker.

It's odd but i think it was necessary as I also did graham to Ba.

Imo Hernandez is the better bet as his movement is fantastic, he is always the last man in attack and he is 2m cheaper. Even the set pieces don't tempt me to keep Rooney as he is in a scoring rut (Not scored since GW5)

      Won't play enough minutes.

Even if he starts, will be subbed after 60-70 and he won't be on set pieces with Adam back in the side.

Like the other guy says, Maxi is a much better option, however Kenny has a blind spot with him and while I expect him to start the next match as he scored a hat trick in the corresponding fixture last year, if he fails to do much, he will be out the side straight away.

steve kean doesn't even know where his side are playing next:

Blackburn manager Steve Kean: "We're disappointed. We've got a big game in Wales at the weekend against Swansea so we made a few changes. We thought that team would be enough but full credit to Cardiff. I felt the second goal was a handball and we were expecting a foul. Possibly if we'd been a bit higher up the table we might have made less changes."

We will find out in the coming weeks now that everyone is back and he has had his rest. I suspect SAF will use him most of the time as his versatility should provide a spot for him somewhere on the field.

Sitting on the fence between Rooney and Hernandez.

MU has an unbelievable fixtures up to gw21 and Rooney is the more nailed on for 90, on set pieces and pens but Hernandez is cheaper, can nick a goal anytime but probably will be rotated more.

    Any opinions? 😕

Would in some part be contingent on who you intend moving out of your team. Money would not be a big part of your decision unless you have plans for midfield. Both are really good options and I have neither but am considering a move down from Aguero to get chico or a move up from sturridge

Id need to do Given to Ruddy (which Im going to do anyway) to get Hernandez. To get Rooney Id need to do the Given Ruddy and Ramsey to 4.7m mid.

I was fine going without any MU forwards the last 6 weeks but their fixtures are too good to ignore now.

Same here. I went the rvp route for last 5 on the high end having had aguero. Man U. definitely offering the poss. of tasty returns now and I ditched Nani a few weeks ago. Which of the two players do your really, really want?

I always go with players with the more "secured" playing time, in this case Rooney who is also on penalties and a better captaincy option.

Saying that, buying Rooney who has been hitting blanks (bad form) will cost me a 4 point hit where I can just get Hernandez in the first place.

I just know ill regret whoever ill end up getting 😡

Doctors, how does this patient look? He has become a lot better these last weeks, but he still could do with a check-up.

    Vorm, Ruddy
    Jones, Shawcross, Brown, Woodie, Simpson
    Silva, VDV, Walters, Drenthe, NDyer
    RVP, Aguero, Adebayor

    1 trannie, 0.6 money

    Plan: Baines/4.0 in for Jones/Shawcross (4 pts)

Good luck with the Formica punt hopefully it works although he did play 90 mins in the CC. VdV is a doubt but I think he will play, perhaps only part of the game though. The rest are fairly nailed on I think. Aguero will feature for City at least from the bench but I think he will start and play 60 mins. No obvious moves really so I would save the transfer.
