On Tuesday, Burnley made their first foray into the summer transfer market after confirming the signing of midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson from Charlton Athletic.

The Iceland international put pen to paper on a three-year contract, with the option of another 12 months, and joins for a reported £2.5 million.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Gudmundsson is relishing the prospect of stepping up to the Premier League:

“The atmosphere around the club is fantastic and playing against the team last season I saw just how good the club was – I definitely wanted to join. The team spirit in the Iceland team seems to be similar to here where everybody is working for each other and it’s a tight group…I’ve played in big games in the Europa League and with Iceland so that’s definitely going to help me when I play for the first time in the Premier League. Experience is everything and I have quite a bit of that so I’ll be fine I think.”

The History

Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, Gudmundsson came through the ranks at Breiðablik, joining the club at the age of seven, before spending brief spells with Chelsea and Fulham as a teenager while studying at the International School of London.

He returned to Breiðablik in 2007 as a 17-year-old to start his professional career, establishing himself as a first-team regular during 2008.

After a move to German side Hamburg fell through in September 2008, Gudmundsson eventually moved to Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in January 2009. The winger spent five years in Holland, clocking up 172 appearances for AZ in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and registering 15 assists, before joining Charlton in the summer of 2014.

In his first season with the Addicks, Gudmundsson enjoyed a very successful campaign, scoring 10 goals and racking up four assists in 41 league matches, while in a side that got relegated from the Championship last term, the Icelander scored six goals and provided 11 assists in 40 league appearances.

Having played for Iceland at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels, scoring an impressive seven goals in 16 matches, Gudmundsson made his senior debut in a 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan in August 2008. The 25-year-old now has 51 caps and four goals to his name, while he started in all five of Iceland’s matches in Euro 2016 as they reached the quarter-finals.

The Prospects

With Burnley boss Sean Dyche a firm believer in the 4-4-2 formation, it’s expected that Gudmundsson will be a strong contender to start on the right of a four-man midfield for the Clarets.

That was a position occupied by George Boyd for the majority of last season, but with Joey Barton moving to Rangers in the summer, Boyd could shift over to the left flank, with Scott Arfield moving from the flank into central midfield alongside David Jones. The versatile Gudmundsson is capable of playing on the left wing, though, and has, on occasion, also been utilised in a central attacking midfield position, so looks likely to nail down a regular role regardless.

Given Boyd and Arfield are priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s expected that Gudmundsson will be handed the same valuation once added to the game.

Looking at the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, Gudmundsson averaged a shot attempt every 36.1 minutes, which was far better than both Arfield (67) and Boyd (71.6). The Iceland international also held a significant edge in terms of assist potential, producing a key pass every 43.1 minutes, compared to every 85.9 and 93.6 minutes for Arfield and Boyd respectively. Given the Icelander played for a side who were relegated, while the Burnley pair helped their team win the Championship, the statistics are all the more impressive for the former Charlton player.

If, as expected, Gudmundsson nails down a starting berth, the underlying numbers certainly suggest he may well emerge as the strongest option from the Burnley midfield. This could be beneficial from a Fantasy point of view as Dyche prefers consistency of selection and has rarely tinkered with his starting XI over the past two seasons.

Burnley’s opening fixtures (SWA, LIV, che, HUL) are also very favourable, so the option to include a Clarets attacker in our initial 15-man squads appears tempting. Forward Andre Gray will likely attract the most investment given he was the top scorer in the Championship last season with 23 goals, but he will set us back 6.5 in FPL.

What may well be the deciding factor is whether Gudmundsson can wrestle some set-piece duties off Jones. The former Wolves midfielder is unlikely to gain much interest priced at 5.0 in FPL given he only scored once last season and if Gudmundsson acquires a fair share of free-kick and corners, he could potentially push himself towards the front of the budget midfielders queue.

Im actually pleased with draft 1.0

    Adrian / Forster

Shaw / Azpi / Van Dijk / Francis / Jevans

    Siggy / Eriksen / Coutinho / Mkhi / Kante

Long / Danny Ings / Aguero

With Aguero up front nothing else matters. Midfield looks huge on paper and defence is balanced. If i get through the next 6 weeks with just one draft i'll shittt in a hat and quaff it.

Having a little issue here. I actually do believes in Liverpool's attacking potential! I've picked Mane as my guy for now. I've paired him with Lukaku for the sake of variety but if I ditch that combo I can end up with Sturridge and Coutinho. What would you recommend?

Is aguero really that essential when you spread the money around you can get more premium players who will have big contributions

Well Pep likes really World Class talent and he tends to pick top first then bottom if you get what I mean. City is a good squad but I would only say Aguero is the only World class cosmic level player. With that logic why not pick him so you don't have to worry.

This is a fair point but when silva is on he's very easy to captain and I also have hazard so Costa wouldn't be a captain option for me as hazard would be the Chelsea captain of choice

This is odd in itself for me

I can't see the logic in Costa and Hazard when you won't captain Costa. It's why I am currently without KDB

You're right of course. Good thing about Aguero is he's a great captain choice. Bad thing is when he gets a Hattie and everyone's captained him apart from you. That can be a killer.

If agueromacores a hattrick on the opening day, the chances are that silva/KDB will also contribute so it softens the blow, you know with silva he will consistently get points, aguero is more hit and miss

      You have a point certainly.
But the thing is, we more or less know that Kun will be one of the top scorers while spreading money might not guarantee that you pick the right players that will score highly. And then there is the C to take in to consideration.

Going by the oft quoted VORP calculations, Aguero has to outscore Lukaku by 130 points over the seasons. With Lukaku having scored an average of 160 points in his significant years, that works out to 290 for Kun. He's been atleast 60 or more short of that in most seasons. Granted that a captain double offsets the VORP numbers a bit, but barring that 5 goal haul, I don't remember and blitzing performances from him last season.
Kun is a big safety cushion which everyone tries to make even bigger by advocating his presence in nearly every RMT. I'm not totally opposed to get him, but there is quite a bit of sense in avoiding him

Nice question. The amount of naysaying makes me want to root for you just to prove a point. Some people are using the Aguero captaincy option to make it appear as if by forsaking him you aren't allowed a captain yourself.

In your example, double Silva + Costa isn't that much worse than double Aguero and Gradel in comfortable Chelsea and City opening wins:
      Aguero 13*2 + Gradel 2
      Silva 7*2 + Costa 10
but I think the real value proposition right now would be
      Aguero and Martial
      vs
      Ibra and KDB

That is much closer in my eyes as well 0.5m cheaper, which at this time of year is significant.

I admire so much of what you've written. I really do. But it's just absolute madness.

I would rather have aguero and a 4.5 then Costa and Silva when you factor in how often I will captain him.

It is absolutely inconceivable to consider you can get near a top rank without him.

I'd take Aguero & Gradel in this example...I don't like Costa at all and I expect good things from Gradel.

But I do think you have a point. Aguero can and will score against anyone, but IMO, Man City have the worst start to the season out of all teams over the first 8 fixtures.

I still expect him to score goals but I don't necessarily see him being a reliable captain choice...I might try to go without until the second international break.

There's so many good value options there, and you can put out 3 with decent fixtures each week.
The 5.0 options don't really appeal to me, Shaw/Baines at 5.5 are nice but I feel the extra money can be used better in attack.

Moyes is a safe pair of hands, and the Sunderland defence still looks a decent rotation option with him in charge.

We know his Everton sides were always well organised, and although he didn't enjoy much success at Manchester United or Real Sociedad, the criticism he received for his dull style of play there isn't necessarily a bad thing for fantasy managers. He kept exactly 13 clean sheets in 38 games at both clubs, which is a solid return.

    Hi guys,

Just a quick question here, I'm not from England but if I would want to come to England and check out a game there, at what ticket prices should I be looking and when is the best time to buy one?

Prefer a London club since we'll probably stay there a couple of days to visit the city as well

Millwall's about £30 I think, dunno about PL clubs, maybe £50?
