Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Not sure if this has been discussed here

The idea is to play 4-2-4,’ Oscar said, before adding that Conte had been implementing his new system in double sessions on the practice pitches during their tour of Austria.
‘We tried this every day in training - we’re getting better.’

This is gonna really impact the FPL output of many players. I would say Azpi won't get a chance to move upfront as often. I'm really curious about who the front 4 will be

      4-2-4 is really 4-2-3-1

Two wide mids (Hazard and AN Other) and some one playing behind Costa in the hole

Who are the 2 holding mids though ? Kante and Matic, Kante and a deep lying Fabs, is Kante bench fodder ? .. only time will tell !

if it were 4-2-3-1 why would he specifically say 4-2-4? he's been playing 4231 at Chelsea for years now

Just semantics imv, no way will any team play with 4 forwards l in a line across the pitch - he is obviously saying two sitting mids and four offensive players from the mids/forwards

Maybe be 442 but never 424 as we perceive it so we will have to agree to disagree 😉

From the FFS ... The big unknown at Stamford Bridge is what system new manager Conte will look to deploy, having favoured a three-man defence for the majority of his spells in charge of Juventus and Italy. Conte has also used a 4-4-2 formation, though, so there’s every chance he could start with both Batshuayi and Diego Costa in attack as the Blues move away from a 4-2-3-1 setup.

There is a quote from him saying his 4-2-4 is a 4-4-2 and his 3-3-4 is a 3-5-2. Yes they are just numbers on paper but a bit more than semantics. For example when people here think 3-5-2 they always go straight to talking about wing backs and what they assume that role is but the way the team works means the wingers are way closer to wide forwards than full backs

We will have to check the stats to see what part of the pitch each player occupies - imv one thing for sure there won't be 4 players up top waiting for the ball to reach

On his pre-season game position as the midfield partner of Matic

‘It’s been a little bit different for me because I always play number 10,’ Oscar said. ‘I try to play my best always and try to help my team.’

If he continues to feature in that midfield 2, he loses value as an attacking Mid. His output will switch to assists, rather than goals.

      On Batshuayi
‘He did nicely,’ Oscar said. ‘He will be a bit more compact and play for the team. This is what the team needs this season.’

      - That sounds like Batman will have to do more defensive duties. I might be reading too much into this, but players tend to give more information on tactics since they aren't used to making complex statements which actually don't reveal much.

On Batshuayi , I think Oscar means he will be disciplined and not allowed to roam about as Costa does. I may be wrong but that is what I understand.

agreed. I was thinking that he might be given more freedom since he's a much younger player. If costa can keep his cool, it might be another really good season for him

Hope you guys will allow me a little brag. This is exactly what I predicted after my deep dive analysis into conte's tactics throughout his career. Tried to share some detailed insights on here a couple times met with a barrage of "conte plays 3-5-2" or "they will lineup like this" followed by last years Chelsea lineup

Chelsea don't have the defenders or wing backs to play 352 unless he starts converting mids into wing backs ...

i believe he will look at the players he has available and pick a formation that suits his assets and that he is comfortabke with ... it may throw up a few surprises though 🙂

Yea Conte mentioned that quite early. He will adjust to suit the players he has. But the majority of commenters refused to accept that he wouldn't play 3-5-2

I agree, I think there will be a lot of shuffling of FFS teams' Chelsea assets in the first few weeks as Oscar becomes a left back, a random mid becomes a right back or centre back and Hazard sits on the bench lol

This term wing backs suggests 5 defenders. Hence why conte calls it 3-3-3-4. Think candreva and cuadrado.

But the team will rarely be configured as 334 apart from when they have the ball deep in the opposition half

If Chelsea leave 3 at the back with their current degenders they will be ripped apart by counter attacking pace down the flanks, a fast striker down the middle (in the gap and on the shoulder of the slow Ivan/Terry) and late arriving mids

It's a 4-4-2 that switches to a 4-2-4 when attacking. As a Chelsea fan I think it might be:

      Cout
      Ivanovic / Cahill / Terry-Zouma / Apzi
      Willian / Matic-Fabs / Hazard
      Batman / Costa

Hazard and Willian then push up from the wings to make the 4 whilst Kante and Matic/Fabs sit back. I'm not too sure Fabs fits into this system given he can't defend.

    Rate My team guys

    hart boruc
    shaw terry wimmer mcauley friend
    kdb hazard eriksen bolasie downing
    zlatan long Carroll

hart nd boruc rotate pretty well. terry can be replaced by a starting cfc defender. wimmer looks to start in a capable spurs defence.

kdb looks better value over kun, hazard looked sharp @ euros but i could switch to costa nd mk zlatan mkhitaryan if need be.

i had townsend but bolasie for 0.5 less seems better value. may also switch caroll nd downing for feghouli nd rhodes(or a starting boro forward).

also eriksen to lamela is another option allowing me more funds elsewhere.

    main options
    mkhi vs zlatan
    feghouli vs caroll
    downing vs Rhodes
    eriksen vs lamela
    townsend vs bolasie
    tadic vs long

Really interesting but the two wide players are not honestly part of a 'four up top' because they drop back a lot and sit much deeper than the two up top, so it was really a 3142 or 352 imv

Hi Champ, I studied a lot about Conte out of excitement before Italy started their campaign.

3-5-2 was only applied because of BBC (Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini)

Basically it was a 3-3-4 in attack, while a 5-3-2 when they had to defend.

Bonucci played centrally, Chiellini as LCB and Barzagli as RCB. Bonucci had amazing long balls in his locker, so he used to stay int the center. Pirlo used to link up play with the 3 CBs and they used a lot of long balls (high and low both), the other front 6, they juts kept on pushing and finding spaces and almost anyone was able to get a goal, which was unpredictable in an exciting way, man marking wasn't possible cause there was a lot of movement in attack.

At Chelsea with the current crop we have, I can't see anything past a 4-2-4 (4-4-2 while defending).

Looks like Rooney will be playing as #10.

“It’s almost like a free role and I am excited to play it,” said Rooney.

“He said to me about playing No.10. That is something I’ve now got to work on and get myself in the right position to score goals. I have scored goals all through my career and I have no doubt in my goalscoring ability. Hopefully I can do that this season.

“I like to be involved in the game and I am now playing for Jose who, straight away, has no fears about players coming deep if they want to.

“It’s a different way of playing, a different manager, different ideas and if I can bring my game and qualities to this team, then I know I can create chances and score goals.”

Solid and no wasted cash in the bench - but maybe a more nailed fifth 4.5 mid for Capoue looking at Watford fixtures? Fletcher has an easy start ?

      Morning Toast!
      I´d give it a good 7/10
You sure Terry will get games, there are plenty of good 5,5 players out there.
      Good luck mate.

Thanks! Capoue scored two goals in preseason but will look at Fletch. Just want someone who plays.

Will probably wildcard earlyish. So was happy to go with him till Zouma is back. Also scores goals. Alternatively I might look at Baines as Koeman should get some CS

    Which combo?

    A) Townsend and Jagielka

    B) Bolasie and Coleman

    Gabriel / Williams / Morgan / Walker
    Fabregas / Coutinho / Payet / Eriksen
    Aguero / Ibrahimovic

Subs: Jakupovic / Campbell / Fletcher / Paredes

My concern is lack of Arsenal attacking coverage.

    Morning chaps and chapesses,

    Who's been added?

The focus has been on Negredo; I've not seen mention of Zuniga and the other Watford defender Bye Bye or something. Any other players added by FPL already?

I have gone with 4 x 4.5 in defence, and one 4.0. My team looks top heavy but I like it. Any thoughts?

    Foster/Jaku
    Friend/Souare/Pieters/fernandez/paredes
    Hazard/Ozil/Tadic/Siggy/Fletcher
    Ibra/Aguero/Hernandez

Yup, if you're going for a cheap defence you won't get better. Personally I'd avoid basketcase Hull at the moment but you'd need to dig out another 0.5 to upgrade your 3rd striker.

yep! I had a 6.5 3rd striker and decided that I couldn't decide, so took the decision out of my own hands.

Moyes announced as the new Sunderland manager. I hope he can get their defence sorted out quickly. Could be useful budget options

Thoughts on my set up welcome?

    Berahino / Ibra / Aguero

I like this, minus Carrick. Will not rack up many points whatsoever. Particularly since he is far from nailed on to start this year. How much was he? Surely better options

Had a few cracks of this, what do yous think?

    Cech / Pickford
    Morgan / Stones / Moreno / Walker / Paredes
    KDB / Townsend / Sigurdsson / Tadic / Phillips
    Aguero / Negredo / Giroud

Never had such a balanced team from the start, I usually don't bother with having anything decent on the bench so any opinions would be great!

Hi, a little bit worry about Moreno, Liverpool defense unstable now with Lovren and Matip. And Liverpool seeking for another left back.

    Augero / Lukaku / Long

    Thanks.

Looks good overall, quite similar to my first draft. I would only remove Dier, he offers little value after being re-classified as a midfielder. Gradel is a decent option at 5.5, or you can go for a 4.5 mid and upgrade elsewhere

    Foster-Jakupovic
    Friend-Bellerin-Cresswell-Paredes-Amat

    Kane-Aguero-Borini

    How's this looking?

A bit unbalanced in my opinion. I would downgrade Shaqiri to someone like Gradel and upgrade Paredes and Amat to 4.5 defenders that will play and can rotate with Friend

ANY assistance will be greatly appreciated:

    Mandanda / Heaton

    Aguero / Rashford / Musa

      Heaton rotates with Foster--same price
      Sorry, whats a Matip?
Rashford won't start &.0 gets you Deeney or Long at 6.5 is best.
The thing I'm doing this season is going 7.5 mids, and if the 9.5 get hot then move on em. keep one
      and> 2 7.5s Good Luck to you.

As i've commented earlier - Liverpool defense looks unstable at the beginning. It's too risky take someone from there.
And Ozil can miss start because of euro.
And Musa - he never played in epl, before this time he played in awful russian league - very doubtful choice.

          Imo.
          Oizil > Mhitaryan (same price)
Matip > Morgan, or Simpson (same price)
          Musa -> Long (6.5)
and upgrade Rashford because of his chances appears in start too low because of Rooney and Ibra.

    **Update from earlier post**
    Be nice!

    Mandanda / Heaton

    Alderweireld / Koscielny / Shaw / Friend / Parades

    Mkhitaryan / Firmino / Eriksen / Fischer / Snodgrass

    Aguero / Long / Musa

    - Friend will replace Koscielny in starting lineup for GW 1&2
    - Snodgrass is the sub in midfield (I believe he might be taking set-pieces for Hull)

    any suggestions?
