Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hi Guys, first stab let me know what you think?

    Butland - Nordfeldt
    Shaw - Morgan - PVA - Parades - Kingsley
    Mkhi - Payet - Mahrez - Kante - Grujic
    Aguero - Zlatan - Barnes

Keeping an eye on Feghouli to swap in for Kante if he continues his pre-season form. Grujic has looked v good for Liverpool so far but not sure he will get much game time.

Overall a bit of a mixed bag.
I would downgrade Butland so you have two goalkeepers that actually play.
I like the Mahrez and Mkhi picks but Payet may not play for the first few gameweeks. Kante is defensive so he is unlikely to score big points.

Aguero and Zlatan should net you lots of points. What formation were you going to play,

      Please RMT

I like your defence and have np with your goalkeepers.
Your midfield is quite strong and your attack is very solid.
Overall your team is well balanced and strong all round.
      8/10

    RMT Please

    Heaton-Foster
    Bellerin-Friend-Shaw-Paredes-(5.0 defender)
    Mahrez-Miki-Eriksen-Tadic-Capoue
    Aguero-Long-Wilson

Do you think I should strengthen my attack. I could accomodate for Lukaku or one of the two chelsea strikers. Would that be a good idea?

Do you think Bellerin is worth it?

    Batshuayi or Costa or Lukaku.

    1. milejedinakhighclub

I'd replace Heaton with Jakupovic, and use the 0.5 to upgrade Paredes as a starter. 4.0 defenders only become 3.9 defenders.

Midfield is solid, but your attack is weak - so I'd be looking at Lukaku; Costa likes the cards too much for my liking personally, and Chelsea tend to score from the midfield anyway (he says with no proof). Bellerin is not bad, but I think there is better value out there in the defenders.

Generally well rounded. Like the midfield but would agree you could improve the attack. If Callum Wilson can get back to same form as this time last year then great shout.

Ok, i'm very satisfied at the moment with this:

    Heaton - Foster
    Terry - Jones - Stones - Souare - Lenihan
    Hazard - Mkhtiyan - Mahrez - Lamela - Capoue
    Aguero - Lukaku - Grabban

    What do you think?

      Keepers all good. 8/10
Defence looks poor to me. 5/10
Midfield looks very good (perhaps swap Lamela for Antonio? but that's just a personal preference). 9/10
Kun and Lak good picks but not Grabban 7/10

Too much spent in goal and defence for me... I'd swop Toby to Walker and Hart to Foster/Heaton. That would give you 2mil to upgrade Lamela, Drinkwater and/or Fletcher.
      Love your front 3!

      1. Thor

true but then I don't have a goalie that can give me points.
Last year my defence was Fuchs - Alderweireld and Bellerin, gave me a lot of points.

What players do I take over lamela and drinkwater if i do these changes?

Forster will get you points.. very good shot stopper with plenty of bonus potential.

At 7.5mil you have Fab, Sigi, Ayew and Tadic all better options than Lamela in my opinion.

          What about Drinkwater+Lamela+Boruc >> Fabegas+Sigi/Ayew+Jaku
          ?

How do you guys rate my Team...

    Cech (Jakupovic)
Walker, Shaw, Sagna (Fernandez, 4mil Def that won't de-value)
    Mkhi, Firmino, Eriksen, Bolasie (Capoure)
    Kun, Lakaku, Long/Grey

    1. MFPL
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Solid team, but feel like you should consider going Cech and Firmino > Foster and Fabregas? This would free up 2m and Cech and Firmino have difficult fixtures to start the season.
Other than that it is a good team.

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Fancy Firmino to score well but agree Cech may need to go for Foster... although that does leave me with no Arsenal def cover which I always like to have.

Hoping Stones goes to City and then I can swap Sagna to Stones for +0.5mil, Cech to Foster for +1mil and then upgrade Bolasie to one of the 7.5mil midfield choices, probs Fab depending on where he plays pre season.

        1. MFPL
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I do feel like Firmino could score well, I just don't want to risk it.

That would be some good trades, just have to hope that Stones does go to city.
Could go with Gabriel in defence if you want Arsenal cover. Mertesacker has picked up a knee injury so he won't be joining Arsenal on their USA preseason tour. Just not sure how long he is out for.

      1. MFPL

I have a feeling that Barkley will score really well, especially since after the first game Everton have a lot of easy games.
I have considered Sigi, I just don't know where he could fit in my team. Swansea do have two great fixtures to start the season though.

I wouldn't go with Nordfeldt (don't think he will start), Willian, Janssen or Defoe. Maybe Koscielny or Bellerin as well.
If you are looking for players who are different to other teams, then they are good picks, but there are players at similar prices who can offer more.
Eg. Fabregas, Tadic, Sigurdsson, Rondon, Long/Austin, Gray, Negredo.

Hard to tell since there has only been one game played since Negredo has joined the club, but he did start that game.
I would expect Negredo to be nailed on considering he has experience in the BPL, but it is hard to tell.

    Cech-
    Bellerin - rose - Moreno
    mkhitaryan - payet - fabregas - erikson
    batshuayi - Long - Lukaku

    subs - pickford - paredas - xhaka - amat

my first go at the team - what do you think I should look to improve on, any names come to mind?

    1. MFPL
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I would go Rose > Walker. Walker is cheaper than Rose and is also a starter.
I wouldn't go with Moreno, especially if Liverpool sign a new LB. Their fixtures are challenging to begin the season, so there wouldn't be many CS points coming from him.

I feel like you need Aguero in FPL, he will always be one of the top forwards, and he always finishes close to the top even if he has been injured for a lot matches.
Also, it would be good to downgrade Xhaha to someone like Capoue if he is just going to sit on your bench. You will free up 1m to use elsewhere.

So, for that reason you have just said, your team wont get a good rating. You are gambling on Aguero and Ibrahimovic but even if they scored 2 goals each for the first 5 games of the season (which they likely wont), you will probably find yourself behind guys with a stronger overall team. Its a gamble that team in my opinion

    RMT?

    Courtois
    Stones - Shaw - Friend
Hazard - De Bruyne - Mkhitaryan - Siggy - Fischer
    Aguero - Austin

    4,0 keeper - Robertsson (Rotates with Friends) - 4,5 forward , 4,0 defender

Obviously very light bench but I will probably be wildcarding early on so I want to start heavy. Teams don't tend to rotate key players early in the season so I don't think it'll be a problem.

    Any thoughts?

    Rate my team?

    Forster
    Bertrand, Alderweireld, Walker
    Ayew, Sigurdsson, Townsend, Barkley
    Aguero (C), Gray, Austin

Any suggestions? Unsure about the southampton lads.

Hardly any need for both Ayew and Siggy? that seems like over covering Swansea.... No chelsea or utd cover either and they have good fixtures early on and have both got new managers... ie honeymoon period.... see mine below.. what you think?

    RMT Please 🙂 Formation 3-4-3

    Foster £4.5m (Jakupovic £4.0m Bench)

    Bertrand £5.5m Terry £5.5m Shaw £5.5m (Paredes £4.0m /Reid £5.0m Bench)

    Sigurdsson £7.5m Mahrez £9.5m Mkhitaryan £9.5m Mirallas £6.5m (Coquelin £4.5m Bench)

    Agüero £13.0m Negredo £6.5m Batshuayi £9.0m

Reid and Bertrand to rotate each week to suit fixtures. Concerned about Negredo starting though?....

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated 🙂

      Defense is too expensive

Mirallas could have limited game time, and there are better options to Coquelin as a 4.5 mid ( Capoue, Fletcher, Hojbjerg )?

Also, with regards to Negredo - there are some other flavours: Gray, Wilson, Austin, Long etc. Have a look at those options as well.

cheers mate, had the same thought as regards Mirallas so might go to townsend instead.... Like the 4.5M switch of coquelin too! which of those 3 suggestions of yours would have the best offensive threat in your opinion?

Still fancy Negredo though because of fixtures early on...

I have Capoue currently but also have my eye on Hojbjerg.

Negredo may be a dark horse this season, we can only wait and see - who knows.

      - defence way too expensive imo, Terry may not even start when Zouma is back. Paredes far from starting and you should look to upgrade him to 4,5.

      - Capoue, Fletcher and maybe Leko much better choices than Coquelin for 4.5. I like your other mids though.

      - wouldnt start with Batshuayi, question marks about both his game time and how will he settle in new place. Could be gold later in the season, but i think that Lukaku and Costa are better to start with

      - Negredo has been very poor last few seasons. Rondon (great fixtures), Wilson or one of SOU strikers for me.

    My current squad 🙂

    Valdes (Jakupovic)

    Fuchs-Shaw-Fry (Morgan, Paredes)

    Mahrez-Mkhitaryan-Payet-Shaqiri (Dier)

    Negredo-Ibrahimovic-Giroud

    Any comments, suggestions? 🙂

    The 6.5m striker........

Carroll - good run of fixtures (Chelsea and City aside), plenty of service from Payet and that new fella they bought
Long - Pelle has gone, does this create more opportunity for Long? Southampton's start not as easy to West Ham
Austin - see above, does he start up front with Long?
Wilson - Bournemouth into the dreaded 'second season' but he has to be their main man........
Negrado - got to be the main threat for 'Boro? I know nothing about them though - are they going to struggle to score?

    Where are you leaning?

Was going to add him to the mix but Burnley are complete unknown to me, they aren't going to struggle to score? Typically I like to stay away from the sides coming up, but I don't know enough about them.

Rondon is my bet, and I see quite a differential too. 2nd season in FPL, amazing fixtures (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHU, stk, sun), guaranteed game time and his team's main man.

Maybe boring, but at the same time solid pick, for me ideal to start the season with. Would like to see the Austin/Long situation clarified first and observe Gray or Negredo a bit before I jump on any of them.

Carroll till he rips a tendon on a long blade of grass.
      Long
      not Negredo
Hope Berahino moves to Stoke/swa but even then poor first 6 fixtures

Best striker for 7m or less first 5-6 game weeks given fixtures:
    a) Defoe
    b) Wilson
    c) Gray
    d) Long
    e) Deeney

Looking for a third striker but majorly struggling!!
