After giving you a heads-up on the Scout League and rule changes in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game earlier this week, we now turn our attentions to the player list.

Starting at the back, we begin our series of articles by looking at the goalkeepers.

When assessing our stopper options, it’s important to bear in mind they are now awarded seven points for each clean sheet earned, as opposed to five points in previous seasons. This appears to be an attempt to elevate the premium bracket of keepers into our thinking and bring them alongside the value budget options, who frequently relied on bonus points to boost their potential.

With tier one of bonus returning +2 for five or more saves and the new tier two system earning you +3 points for a minimum of seven stops, there is clearly a case for saving the pennies in this area and selecting a budget keeper who is likely to be kept very busy.

It will be interesting to see who comes out on top, though, of course, the Holy Grail would be to pick a keeper who excels in both areas.

Here are our top ten picks across the price brackets..

Tom Heaton 5.8m

Burnley’s number one has previous; in their ill-fated 2014/2015 campaign, Heaton still managed to keep ten clean sheets and racked up 130 saves, having played all 38 matches. He also made two penalty saves, which are now worth five points apiece. Having registered 20 clean sheets in the Championship last term, he looks the standout option amongst the promoted teams.

Vito Mannone 6.0m

Despite failing to start a league match until Gameweek 18 last season, the Sunderland stopper still managed to earn more bonus points (18) than any other goalkeeper. Mannone’s average of 23.8 minutes per stop was quicker than any number one in 2015/16 and his ability to hoover up the save points makes the Italian a great value option between the sticks as the Wearsiders look to regroup under David Moyes.

Heurelho Gomes 6.1m

The Watford stopper ranked second in the keeper rankings on 134 points last time around, despite conceding the fourth highest number of goals (49) in the top-flight. Delving into the data it’s easy to see why; three penalty saves, 11 clean sheets and 16 bonus points earned from a league-high 127 saves and an astonishing six Man of the Match awards (MoTM) tell the story. With Watford appearing to set up in a defensive 3-5-2 and with saves now further rewarded in this year’s Sky Sports offering, Gomes looks primed for another stellar campaign.

Jack Butland 6.4m

Despite missing the final seven matches due to injury, the Stoke stopper still finished seventh in the keeper rankings in his debut season in the top-flight. Butland picked up ten shut-outs, 16 bonus points and three MoTM awards last time out and, having returned to fitness over the summer, we expect further heroics as he looks to oust Joe Hart as England’s number one.

Fraser Forster 6.4m

The keeper’s return from injury was key to the resilience that saw Southampton deliver 12 clean sheets last time around. Forster conceded just 17 times in 18 league outings in 2015/16 and an average of 33 minutes per save highlights his propensity for picking up points as the Saints prepare for life under new manager Claude Puel.

Adrian 6.4m

The West Ham man is another who offers a steady source of saves. Adrian was joint-fifth for stops in 2015/16 despite missing six matches through injury, averaging a save every 30.1 minutes for Slaven Bilic’s side. The Spaniard saved two spot-kicks last term and has kept out five penalties over the last couple of campaigns – more than any number one in the top-flight.

Kasper Schmeichel 7.0m

Despite producing 15 clean sheets in Leicester’s title-winning season, their keeper comes in 1.0m less than the most expensive option (David de Gea) in goal. Add in 101 saves, which was joint-fifth in 2015/16, and there is a serious case for thinking Sky Sports have slightly undervalued Schmeichel. The loss of N’Golo Kante and European commitments could have a negative impact, of course, and is clearly worth monitoring. On the upside, Schmeichel looks far less likely to be rotated if Claudio Ranieri clicks into Tinkerman mode to cope with the schedule.

Petr Cech 7.5m

In his first season at Arsenal, the Czech was the highest scoring keeper in the game. Cech produced 148 points after arriving from Chelsea, thanks to a league-high 16 shut-outs and as many bonus points, second only to Mannone in save points. His propensity for saves arguably makes the Gunners’ number one the most appealing premium-priced option and with the addition of defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka affording Arsenal a robust presence in the centre of the park, more defensive returns look likely.

Joe Hart 7.7m

The England stopper is likely to remain the safest and cheapest route into a Man City defence which kept 16 clean sheets over the course of last season. Whilst Hart failed to churn out saves bonus (just four points), there’s a hope that new manager Pep Guardiola’s possession-based approach could bolster City’s defensive prospects after they leaked 41 goals in 2015/16. Hart’s erratic distribution is a concern, though – with Guardiola looking for his side to play out from the back, their number one has plenty of room for improvement.

David de Gea 8.0m

A price of 8.0m could be a bargain for a nailed-on member of Jose Mourinho’s rearguard. Man United kept 18 clean sheets and conceded just 35 goals in the previous campaign, the joint best alongside Tottenham, and with no European fixtures to contend with, they have every chance of matching that tally. Like Hart, though, the Spaniard’s main downfall is a lack of saves bonus (six points), which somewhat dents his prospects when compared to the likes of Cech at a similar price point.

Selection Tactics

Goalkeepers tend, on average, to be the lowest scorers of all the positions in the Sky Sports game. With more points earned from clean sheets this season, though, I would expect them to closely challenge and possibly exceed defenders’ relative scores this time around.

Wasting precious transfers swapping keepers has generally been a bad idea, given their low ceiling for points.

This time around, though, there seems more of a viable case to play the fixtures somewhat, rather than pick season-long selections.

Breaking the campaign down into two or three ‘phases’ of play and then selecting your keeper for each portion looks an efficient way to utilise this key position.

    RMBL (Rate My Back Line)

Struggling to sort out this back line. I think I'm set on Heaton/Foster at this stage. Don't really want to be spending more than 9.0 in that area. But my five defenders, its like trying to line up the sights of a rifle whilst on a ship on the seas full of rum and one arm.

It seems so light I'm actually scared, but it gives me a somewhat strong front 8 on paper.

At this stage I'm aiming at:
    Heaton - Foster
    Terry - Stones - McAuley - Pieters - Friend

The above gives the the following front eight:
    Hazard - Mkhi - Eriksen - Redmond - Capoue
    Kun - Lukaku - Wilson

Let me know what you think of the back line, is it way to thin, too much risk etc?

Yeah you wouldn't want to go any lower. That 4.0 though. Will always be benched but damn would be an eye sore each week haha.

So if Stones stays at Everton... I wonder who would be the best 5.0 defender?

I fancy the chances of Brad Smith starting for Bournemouth.

Gabriel assuming Arsenal don't sign another CB.

Unfortunately at this stage it's still a lot of guesswork with a lot of unknowns.

Come on you should know that champ. If it was the black dude, why would he be staring at them and not legging it. It was totally the hot dog stand operator, shady Frank he goes by. The story goes that Shady Frank hides his burrito sauce in the hot dogs, the sauce is a known trap by visitors that causes them to crave fried chicken and in turn smash the potato gravy. This potato gravy consists of whaling aftermaths. So the Japanese could be linked to the crime rate in downtown Moscow where the vodka and hot dogs flow like a pelican caught in the rapids.

Its never the black dude man.

I really want Nolito but Sterling lurking is too risky i think. Not sure how much Pep likes to mix things up but City have CL qualifiers before and after gw 2 which is likely to see some rotation.

If there's one spot where Pep needs his players playing at their very best, it's the wings. It's been the case sice his Barca B days.

He'll have Sterling, Nolito, Sané, Gabriel & Moreno by next year (RIP Navas we hardly knew ye) all competing for the same spots, & I think that's just further evidence about how crucial dynamic wingers are for him. Although Gabriel has transitioned very well into a centre-forward this season, but can play on either wing comfortably.

Pep loves him some rotation, but he'll certainly develop his favorites over the course of the season if they force themselves as being unbenchable (ala Costa).

      1. RᴀᴄɪɴɢTᴏᴀᴅ
        • 9 Years

At Barca though Villa and Pedro played the vast majority of the minutes on the wing. He might utilise Sterling like he did Afellay?

        1. Zasa
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

I could see that for sure, but I think Pep's preference for wingers & his wing play has evolved over the years. Drawing parallels with how he managed Bayern, I think Sterling shares similar-ish traits to Coman, as he's versatile enough to play on the right when Pep needs his wingers to dribble down the line and stretch the play & pull defences/midfields out of shape when he's facing narrow set-ups in possession.

Sterling needs to work on his finishing though if he were to win over on the left-wing., Nolito is far superior in that aspect which is probably a safe bet as to why he'll likely start.

Draft games are always fun & there's always good banter throughout the season if you're in an active group. An active camaraderie between everyone makes or breaks the league really, as trades will then be really rare if people don't participate.

Does seem like the game's a tad bit more complicated than FPL, I like it already 🙂

Hi guys. Can anyone please give me any opinions on these two selection troubles?

    Ayew or Tadic
    Delofeu or Townsend

I'm leaning towards Tadic for now since he is pretty much their main player with plenty of goal threat to go with the assists (he did score 16 and 14 assists in his last season for twente), but if swansea don't sign a striker then I think I will have to go with Ayew.

Between Delofeu and Townsend, I've been on townsend since my first draft, but I'm slowly getting convinced my Delofeu. Only problem is will he get plenty of gametime?

      Tadic and Townsend.

I have good vibes for Townsend. After reading the mid-budget mids article, Tadic appeared a good choice.

Delafool looks like a rub-a-dub and Ayew faded badly last year.

Ayew finshed off the lats 3 games of the season with 4 goals and 1 assist though

I'd say Tadic and Townie are assured of starts; Swans and Toffees still have a bit of squad restructuring to do.

    Foster/Janko

      1. Take out 1 of Mkhi and Ibra. Even though they're both great players, you don't really need both of them in your Fantasy team.

      2. He is. At least until Zouma is back (That is September).

    11m for 2 midfielders..
Is it better to go with a 6.5/6.0 + 5.0/4.5m
    or 5.5/5.5m ?

Here are the best options as I see them..
    1. Redmond/Townsend/Bolasie (6.5m) + Leko etc..
    2. Feghouli + Gradel (other)

    Haz/ Mkhi/Ayew my current 3..
    Aguero, Luk, Long strikers.

Thinking option 2 is better atm.
I can mix things up after a couple of games anyway?

Aguero + 2x6.5 up front may be interesting... Allows a heavy Midfield of:

Not as inflexible as one might think... can downgrade a midfielder to upgrade a forward.

Personally I think it's madness to plan to WC so early. It's true that every year I start badly and WC in GW 3 or 4, but I still plan for at least the first 10 GWs.

It used to be that.. early WC's were frowned upon but now it seems they are the way to go.

With some big players missing the 1st couple of weeks and prices jumping all over the place.. Is it madness not to plan for an early WC?

There isn't much/any benefit in waiting longer than 6 GW's it seems.

Better to plan for fixtures in first 3 weeks. Then decide if the 3 FTs can help adjust your team or you need a WC. A lot of us are going without Arsenal, Pool, Spurs players. I would be very surprised if we can last till GW12 without using WC.

So this is a definite 352. Happy to have 4.5 forward.
Negatives no keeper rotation. In front 8 no Ars Liv and more worryingly no Spurs. Like saints and hammers rotation so Byran can be any 4.5 West Ham while Cresswell out. Ideas welcome. Can't believe Lukaku is in there but v nice fixtures.

Forgot all about him. It is time these friendlies stepped up a gear, they do not have long to sort themselves out. Bat needs some decent gametime too

Bats should start with Costa being injured. I also want to see want Cuadrado can offer

Oddly, it's showing on ChelseaTV but not LFCTV. Fortunately, I've got both.

    Schmeichel

    Souaré Baines Evans

De Bruyne Mkhitaryan Sigurdsson Mahrez Cabaye

    Agüero Wilson

    Foster Asano Wollscheid Pocognoli

    Any advice?

Too much sacrificed to Kun+power midfield.

9.5m is too much for the keepers and your defence looks suicidal. You need starting defenders to rotate with Evans and Souare.

any changes you would make? Advice very much appreciated.

    Foster - Jaku
    Shaw - Terry - Taylor - Friend - Wasilewski
    Hazard - KDB - Townsend - Redmond - D.Gray
    Kun - Negredo - Sturridge

(Negredo could become any 6.5 or Ulloa)

So I wake up this morning as Mahrez appears to have morphed into Hazard in everyone's squads. Can someone explain this?

People realized Hazard is better than Mahrez

Clearly, 2015/16 season proved that :-/

Hate the guy I've had him in my fantasy football and dugout squad across the last 3 years, taking him out of my team on the odd few weeks when he delivers! People in my league have been laughing at my loyalty towards him, I can't have it happen again and miss out on a player like Mahrez

Mahrez is a really good player, but with all the teams strengthening and Leicester potentially becoming weaker he doesn't look that essential. Plus Hazard is on pens and Mahrez isn't.

If everyone is fit and presuming arsenal dont sign any other attacking player, how do you think they line up in midfield and attack?

I don't think so. Arsenal wouldn't sign Xhaka to leave him on the bench and ramsey/cazorla are more attacking. so they need some balance with the coq

Ramsey ahead of cambell and cazorla ahead of coq?
