Earlier this month, Southampton made Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Nathan Redmond from Norwich. The 20-year-old joins from Bayern Munich for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £12 million, and has penned a five-year contract at St Mary’s.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Hojbjerg revealed talks with new Saints boss Claude Puel helped make the decision to join Southampton an easy one:

“I spoke with the manager and it was very positive in his way of analysing my style and the club. Also, his style was very clear and I like that. I like it when somebody has a style that they are clear about and they know what they want as it’s easier to follow and be part of.”

The History

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hojbjerg started his youth career at BK Skjold and F.C Copenhagen, before joining up with Brondby at the age of 14.

Having been named Danish Under 17 Player of the Year in 2011, the midfielder joined Bayern Munich a year later, and after making his debut for the second team in 2012, was handed his professional debut as a substitute against FC Nurnberg in April 2013. He finished the 2012/13 campaign having made two league appearances, while he scored eight goals and registered one assist in 30 matches for the reserves.

Hojbjerg made seven Bundesliga appearances in 2013/14, claiming one assist, while he played 14 times for the reserves, scoring four goals and providing a single assist.

In order to gain more first-team experience, Hojbjerg was sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in January 2015. The Dane made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and supplying three assists.

Last season, the midfielder joined Schalke 04 on a season-long loan. After initially struggling to command a regular starting berth, he chalked up 30 appearances in all competitions, claiming two assists.

After representing his country at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 12 goals in 38 appearances, Hojbjerg made his senior debut against Sweden in May 2014. He has played 16 times for Denmark and has scored one goal.

The Prospects

During pre-season so far, Puel has mainly utilised a midfield diamond and has occasionally trialled a 4-3-3 – in either set-up, Hojbjerg looks likely to be stationed in a defensive midfield role following the departure of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham.

The Danish international has sometimes played further forward during his career, though, and could play on the side of a diamond, with neither Jordy Clasie or Oriol Romeu offering any real threat.

Standing at 6ft 1in, Højbjerg offers a strong presence in the middle of the park, and has good technical ability in terms of his passing, dribbling and finishing, particularly from long range. His positioning as a defensive midfield player is also impressive, and he registered an interception every 24 minutes for Schalke last season, better than Clasie (27.8), Wanyama (38) and Romeu (43.1). Of all four players, Romeu led the way for successful tackles last term with one every 30.2 minutes, ahead of Wanyama (36.2), Hojbjerg (38.6) and Clasie (42.9).

Hojbjerg certainly looks capable of filling the void left by Wanyama, then, and while he hardly carries a significant attacking threat, he did average a shot every 57.9 minutes last season, better than Romeu (61.6), Wanyama (84.5) and Clasie (113.4).

The former Bayern midfielder only managed a key pass every 182 minutes last term, though, mainly due to featuring in a deep-lying midfield position. Nonetheless, an 87.4% successful pass rate is indicative of his excellent distribution.

While a defensive midfield player wouldn’t normally be of huge interest for Fantasy managers, Hojbjerg’s price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has brought him firmly onto our radars, with the Dane currently sat in 4.1% of squads.

He’s currently only second to West Brom’s Darren Fletcher (14.4%) for ownership in FPL among 4.5-priced midfielders, and, having impressed on his first start against FC Twente, could well establish a regular starting role at St Mary’s.

He’ll be competing with the likes of Clasie and Romeu for a place in Puel’s XI, while Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse are slightly more attack-minded midfield players who could operate on the sides of a diamond.

Hojbjerg was on the bench for today’s friendly with FC Groningen and introduced at half-time. Both Clasie and Romeu were handed starts in the Saints’ engine room, with Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond also in the starting XI.

The Saints’ opening fixtures offer up some plum home ties (WAT, SUN, SWA, BUR) over the opening eight Gameweeks, though there’s no doubt that Dusan Tadic (7.5) and, to a lesser extent, Redmond (6.0) have a greater potential for attacking hauls.

Going on his output so far, Hojbjerg looks best utilised as a bench-warner initially until we get an idea of Southampton’s Fantasy prospects under their new manager. The youngest player ever to represent Bayern in the Bundesliga, there’s no denying the new boy has a touch of class and if Puel affords him the platform to flourish, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on his potential as the campaign unfolds.

    Thoughts on this draft.

    Valdes (STO H)
Baines (TOT H) Shaw (BOU A) Walker (EVE A)
KDB (SUN H) Eriksen (EVE A) Ibe (MUN H) Cabaye (WBA H)
Kane (EVE A) Lukaku (TOT H) Sturridge (ARS A)

(Heaton (SWA H), Paredes (SOU A), Feghouli (CHE A), Friend (STO H)

Opinions on KDB to Hazard, Cabaye to Bolasie even though Cabaye will be on most set pieces and who to have on bench opening gameweek for Friend as I think Boro will keep a clean sheet at home to Stoke?

Got rid of Cabaye for Bolasie as I believe Bolasie will be playing just behind the striker in the CAM role now and at 6.0m I don't see why you would not take a punt on that!

Bolasie for nailedness though I don't think he's a great FPL pick. Bojan might get squeezed out if Hughes plays this 352 in real life once the league starts...but I think there will be a time where Bojan will be in a lot of teams this season. Especially if he takes pens off Arnie.

So you reckon Bolasie is the best 6.0 pick? I'm downgrading Townsend to make room for Nolito.

I'd honestly rather punt on Redmond or just go a further .5 less to Gradel. I don't think Bolasie is a good pick for FPL at all unless he takes a step forward...I'd rather see it first rather than hope for it with him on my GW1 team.

I just feel with his Preseason form, the fact that he is on pens and will play 80+ mins every week makes him the best option at 6.5.

I see him being involved in Large % of Burnley's goals

Amat is a 4m place holder never to be use.

Bolasie is a punt as he may explode at cam next year.

too much Chelsea in def. 5th mid too expensive. You can easily save 1.5 million downgrading Courtois and Gradel.

A lot of question marks. Hasn't been the same since the injury apparently. Got dropped last season at ajax for poor form. Boro extremely defensive. Unproven kid in a much tougher league with a newly promoted team.

I think people are giving his performance where he played next to Ägüero for those six months too much weight tbh. He was excellent for that stint, no doubt about it. But he's been a shadow of his former self since he got to Valencia, his finishing has declined, his physicality has waned, his pace has decreased, & the effects of metatarsal fracture have been pretty obvious.

Yes, he had problems with the board last season leading to more benchings than usual. But he certainly never gave a good fight for his spot when he played. He'll be 31 once the season starts & I don't think he's shown any signs he'll be back at his Man City best anytime soon.

I remain skeptical of him & will definitely avoid for the first couple of GW's to monitor him properly. I'd love to be proven wrong as I was a huge fan of his when he played at Sevilla, but I harbor my doubts.

Great article mate, thanks 🙂 & yes, he definitely is. I don't understand how you can say he's arrogant. Pep's shown time & time again that the reason he plays around with formations & tactics so much is because he adapts his system according to the opponent he's playing, the current game-state, & a forced hand due to injuries.

Amazing front 7 and I like the punt on Fischer. Defence too weak though. Even with cheap defence amazed you put that front 7 together. Lack of decent rotating keepers will hurt too. I would take KDB down to hazard and upgrade Jaku to Heaton at least. Gives you chelsea cover.

I think City will win it easily. If they kept up the form from the beginning weeks of last season, they would've run away with the league. Pep demands and delivers consistency.

Really tough to call.. think a mixture of managerial appointments and big signings in the transfer market pretty much nail the Manchester clubs in the top 4 spots.. Spurs i will throw into the mix next Wanyama will make them even tighter and expect Alli Kane Eriksen Dier etc to continue to improve.. Have to expect Arsenal to be there or there abouts as will Chelsea and Liverpool with no European distractions.. would maybe lean towards Chelsea at this moment rejuvenated Hazard could be key.. Arsenal have key areas still to address and while Liverpool have a fine manager their transfer activity has been rather underwhelming so far imo

So I've just realised how poor Swansea's fixtures are after GW3!

Makes me reconsider my Ayew pick even though he could potentially be OOP

Yep, I was tempted but 2 games is a bit punty. Talk of him going to West Ham anyway. Who knows!

Surprised to see no love for Andy Carroll on here. He plays for a much better team than the other 6.5
options and will be selected if he can stay fit. Most RMTs seem to prefer Gray but I'm thinking Carroll, Wilson and Long could be better options

Actually, Austin is the best option.

Have Southampton been playing 2 up front in preseason?

strange comment, hasn't shown any reason why he would be the best option

I agree. The hammers midfield has so many class players. Definitely worth a punt. His stats for last year were about his best if you look just at point per game / minute. But no love here. Go with your gut best diffs are the ones no one else has.

Might be best to avoid until Gw4 though. Then has a good run of fixtures.

Absolutely. On his day, big Andy is fixture-proof. He proved that with the hat-trick v Arsenal last season. Just can't see Burnley scoring against decent teams

Mame Diouf for 6.0? Any Stoke fans? Is he in favor again, healthy and playing up front?

Yeah played v Orlando just recently and scored....but MOTM and for me Bojan( playing behind striker maybe on pens, likely.... is huge value at 6m....he scored a screamer....poss Berahino to the Potters, although owners money no issue not sure they will pay 20m for him....

Yeah keeping my eye on Bojan but he always tantalizes but then is so inconsistent, plus it seems he never plays 90.
