Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

Like a few others, I wouldn't touch LEI gks/ds just yet until we see them without players they have lost.
Good coverage in your D although Evans is injury prone. Swap for McAuley.
Milfs look a little lightweight and I don't get the Lamela attraction - he's far too inconsistent from a ff perspective.
      Needs Hazard/Mahrez.
Kane will start the season late so wait till he hits form first; Rondon is a no no and I'd be asking myself how will Ibra cope with the pace of the PL? Kun is needed as your first priority.

Not sure I'd have Ibra just yet - I want to see how he copes with the new environment that he is in/how he gets used by JM.

      Good team otherwise.

My reason for Ibra is United have the fixtures. If he flops, i like my second striker to be a premium one. So easy downgrade to Studge/Kane/Lukaku/Costa.

Also Delboy over Tadic to spreak the risk since i already have Austin.

Like Jafalad says, like Austin in there.

I'm not sure about Hazard. Too much uncertainity about where he plays. Added to that, Conte is an ultra defensive manager who'll shut up shop once they're 1-0 up.

Thus, would rather have a Chelsea defender than Fuchs.

I will get a che defender if they sign someone. JT and Cahill a big no no for me. Infact Azpi the only defender from that defence i rate.

Conte have Chiellini Bonucci and Barzagli. Different class.

Mourinho managed to do a fantastic job with the current Chelsea defense in the title winning season.

No real hints to think that Conte can't manage the same given he's more defensively minded.

Fuchs > Azpi looks like a good tranny given that you have the Cash.

I like it, which is good, cos it's very similar to mine. A couple of slight reservations.
      (1) how confident are you that Austin is nailed on?
      (2) why deolefeu ahead of Townsend? Both good fixtures but Townsend is more nailed and has better form, no?
      (3) what reasons for choosing Fischer ahead of say gradel or feghouli? Again, seems to be a risky one.
Apart from that, all seem like self evidently rasonable picks

Not a fan of Hazard personally. I don't think Chelsea will be free scoring, and I don't think he'll commonly play in the front 2 because they'll be reliant on him for creativity, but I think he'll be restricted wide.

Coutinho could easily be rotated, and at the very least will be subbed early occasionally, and he's too inconsistent for my liking.

Payet has had no preseason thus far, and he's pretty pricey. I prefer other 9.5's.

I haven't seen any of Swansea in pre-season, but based on what I've seen over the years, I'm not entirely convinced.

Each to their own though. 🙂

Good gk combo. I had this first up although Jonty convinced me Heatster was better...cheaper.
      Evans - swap for McAuley.
The D is a bit on the light side. I'd have Shaw in there to cover for the Utd cs and some attacking returns. Plus you can rot the other 4 ds around him. Important when you have ubers 😉
Some question marks about the milfs:
      - will Payet be rested for the first game?
      - Coutinho - been very inconsistent in the past. Is he heavy enough for ff?
      - Routledge: surely some mistake? Downgrade to a 4.5.
Fwds: not a fan of Ibra at this stage. The third fwd needs an upgrade.

      Rating: 4/10.

Too much money on keepers, don't you think? Also, I think that defence could lead to some problems long term. I like to have at least one dependable 5 mil plus defender in there. Also, don't know who diamande is, but the prospect of playing either him or rout ledge every week is concerning

        As things stand, Azpi

I think we are crying out for a top quality left footed left back though

Should never have let Felipe Luis go, also don't understand why we haven't been linked with any this transfer window e.g. Ricardo Rodriguez of Wolfsburg

Leaving it very late to sort out now which would suggest Conte sees Kenedy/Aina as good enough quality back up, especially as Baba has been loaned out

How to decide on a formation with Kun and Ibra.

If, like many of us, you want to go for Kun, Ibra and a 6.5 to make up your forward line you face a tricky dilemma. The winning formula of the past is 343, but it also spent far less on average on strikers (25-27m ish, the above combo costs 31m). This allowed the top players to invest heavily on 3 strong midfielders, a mid-price midfielder and a decent defence (e.g. 1-2 premium defenders with a lower price rotating pair/trio).

But with the prices of Ibra/Kun this year it's very hard to match this winning formula with the above strike force. Is the winning formula therefore a 4-3-3 with a strong midfield 3 (in one of my drafts Hazard, Mahrez, Siggy) and decent defence (2x 5.5 and a rotating 4.5 trio for example)? OR, should we grow a pair and drop Zlatan to a lower priced forward, such as Lukaku, Sturridge, or Vardy and stick to the winning formula of the past? This way you can bolster your midfield in a 343 system, and cover United attack with Mkhitaryan/Martial or (if you are brave) Rooney.

I've seen plenty of people trying to go 343 with Kun/Zlatan/6.5 that have made some pretty dodgy midfield choices to accommodate the formation. Having 2 expensive strikers also messes up team structure, and could cause problems when trying to find cash to make transfers further down the line. A final point worth considering is that 343 offers you 7 attacking threats, 433 only offers 6 (although two of these are top strikers).

Good post. Interesting points. I'm currently banking on the good 6.5 forward options and 6.5/5.5 mins to make it work.

          • 10 Years

It might pay off, but I'm not comfortable relying on any of the 5.5 mids every week at the moment. It's definitely possible, Mahrez was 5.5 last year I believe.

Some good points and I have to agree with you about the "Ibra effect." There is sure to be other forwards who will match Ibra's output.

The other point which seems to be overlooked by many, is that we still don't know how Ibra, at 34 years of age, is going to fare with the pace of the PL. We don't even know he is going to be used by JM. I feel it is best to monitor him to begin and go from there. Most of us will play an early WC anyway so I for one am happy to go without for now.

Good thoughts. I genuinly believe Zlat will do very well from the go, hence he's in with Kun. Atm my mids are Mahrez, Fab, Özil and Deulofeu. If the latter cements his place up top I'm happy with that. Ok the defence is cheaper than before but well worth it imho.
