Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

    Here goes, first proper draft...

    Ver 1.1. 31/7/16

    Forster, Jaku
Shaw, Wolly, Taylor, Stones (if he transfers, 5m place holder for now), 4m
KDB, Hazard, Fisher Price, Del Boy, 4.5m
    Aguero, Ibra, Gray

May switch Shaw to Tony v or maybe Terry.

I'm still on the fence with Zlatan too...

I don't believe Jose is stupid enough to play Rooney on reputation and risk his own neck.. he's garbage.. the fans aren't going to accept Rashford sitting on the bench while Rooney gets first team football at his current level of performance

I'm not sure of the attraction at 9.5m. If it came down to having a 9.5m 3rd striker and a cheaper mid, then I'd do that.

Surely games left for both Spurs and City before the big kick off though? would have to play some minutes in them for me to consider either

Hi,could I please get an opinion on the below? Tried to go for proven options, where possible.

    Foster, Heaton,

    Shaw, Friend, Mori, Mee, Reid,

    Eriksen, Ayew, Tadic, Hazard, Fletcher

    Aguero, Lukaku, Gray

Not sure about Gray or Shaw. Was considering Rondon instead of Gray as I know little about him and a Southampton defender to rotate with Reid instead of Shaw, who has a lot of ownership. for a young player coming back from injury.

Antonio can't defend and he is still played as RB and they don't have a LB. Their defence was not solid last year, Bilic is good, but more in terms of attack.

I'm thinking one of these three could be a valuable differential because of this very attitude to their necessity. It's not like they won't score any goals just because they have difficult early fixtures. A punt I'm willing to take but which of the three to punt on is the question! Haha

    EXWHUEMPLOYEE COLUMN: EXCLUSIVE TRANSFER UPDATE
BY EXWHUEMPLOYEE ON 31 JULY 2016 AT 10:48PM

    Olsson
So it has been a while since I have written one of these so there is quite a lot to cover.

Forward Situation: There has been a lot of panic around us signing forwards and yes we have missed out on some of our targets but there is still no need to panic.

    Calleri:

We should have Calleri officially confirmed as our player in the near future (I know I have said this for a while now). There has been a hold up finalising the deal because of his Olympic commitments so he hasn’t been able to come over and have a medical done but the club are still confident he will become a West Ham player soon. The original hold up was that he had to get an Italian passport so he didn’t require a work permit, this has now been resolved. It will be a loan deal with a given a date to be reviewed by, to decide whether it will then be turned into a permanent deal. A very similar situation to that of Lanzini.

    Ayew:

We have made serious enquires about the Swansea forward and submitted an offer which we believe matches their demands. The problem with the deal is that Swansea are seriously lacking in the forward department themselves and want to complete a deal before they sell him, a little similar to the situation that we were in. Their fans are becoming restless as well so they are trying to manage the situation carefully before openly accepting our bid. Claims that Swansea know nothing about our interest and intentions are just not true and you only have to read our Chairman’s comments about the bid submitted for an international forward in the Premier League to work out that it is him. People have questioned why we will now be able to afford his wages when we couldn’t last year when we could have signed him on a free. The bottom line is we are happy to pay more now because he has proven himself in the Premier League. He will not be an out and out forward but will get games there if needed. The club see him as a similar player/role to Valencia, can play up top but more likely to be used as an attacking winger. We hope to conclude the deal in the next week assuming Swansea start to play ball.

    Marquee signing:

I am not sure where this rumour that we were announcing a marquee signing this evening has came from or that I will say anything different tonight-someone has misquoted me somewhere. This is the situation; despite the large fee for Ayew he would not be the marquee forward. It is fair to say that Bacca has still not turned down the club and his options appear to be limited elsewhere. He may be “forced” into the move because Milan need to sell him to buy other players and he doesn’t have a great deal of options. If he then decides still not to join us I can see us making a move for Benteke of Liverpool. He has still yet to join another club and like Bacca, he is keeping his options open. David Gold is a big fan. The Bacca situation is an interesting one but he really is the club’s first choice and until he says an outright no we will keep hoping.

    Sakho to Leave:

WBA have always been the front runners for Sakho and appear to have submitted a bid of around £10m plus clauses which will take the deal up to around £16m, which really is a decent amount for someone who has caused a fair share of problems in recent months. The main concern is whether he will pass his medical or not, the club hope that he will but there are concerns about his back especially. Berahino has been talked about as being part of the deal but the club are worried that with his attitude they could be taking a big risk and prefer Ayew for the role.
