Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

      My reasoning:

*Foster has decent fixtures to start, and when he has tricky fixtures (TOT, liv, MCY, lei), I can sub in Jaku (if he starts for Hull) where he has bou, STO, wat, SOT.

      * Im hoping that my goalkeeper's save points and bonus point potential make up for their lack of CS potential.

*At the start with a tight budget, I've rather not have to downgrade a goalkeeper to bring in a more prolific, in form forward player.

Foster+Myhill combined got 139 points last season, only 20 less than the top scoring goalkeeper (although Cech did play 3 games less). I think WBA have the potential to improve on this tally also.

Can this be improved? I'm all out at this stage.

    Foster (Jak)
    Stones/Shaw/Pieters/Gabriel (Paredes)
    Hazard/Tadic/Mkh/Routledge (Capoue)
    Agüero/Ibra (Long)

Between Bayern, Schalke and Augsburg he's made 71 appearances and scored 2 goals. What potential is there?

        1. Polaris - The Mortal Coil
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

          I could've elaborated but couldn't be bothered.

Basically it's a secure Capoue vs a not so secure Højbjerg, but Højbjerg at least has some potential for points. I say good luck to anyone who sees more than a glimmer of pts potential in Etienne Capoue. 🙂

As I've said before, Højbjerg isn't a DM regardless of what some on here say. He's a CM who does indeed get forward. Ignore the stats at Schalke 04 as he was a sub half the time. He played as a CAM at Augsburg.

I don't see him as the DM for Saints - Oriol Romeu is the DM in that team. Basically, none of the 4.5s are exactly great as you'd expect but I prefer the slightly more flair pick to the dull 2pter.

Some good points about Hojbjerg, but to say Capoue who's playing in a 3-5-2 system with an advanced role has no scoring potential is just false. Hojbjerg's role in the Saints team is unknown, Capoue's role on the other hand is quite clear and we can know for sure to expect a decent amount of points from him.

I already pointed out that Højbjerg is slightly unknown under Puel for now. I still prefer him to Capoue, I'll take my chances.

And I'm aware there was an article posted yesterday claiming he was a DM.

I noticed, how it repeatedly labelled him a DM (he isn't) and proceeded to (rightfully) claim a DM shouldn't be of interest to us fantasy managers, then ended by talking up his points potential....

One end of the spectrum to the other.

          3. Somalion
            • 15 Years

I watch a bit of the Bundesliga so I've seen him a fair bit, saw him at Augsburg as well (where his two goals came). I can't say how he's going to wind up being utilised in the saints, could be he winds up the more defensive member of a pairing with Clasie.

Thing with Capoue is I wouldn't usually be enthused by him but in preseason he's been given a different role in the set up and allowed get forward much more. As a result he's actually scored a few goals. It's preseason of course, but I'd definitely suggest keeping a close eye on him.

Pretty much it in a nutshell. Have said above that he's not a totally safe/dull pick like Capoue, and slightly unknown.

Following on, I'd ignore his stats at Bayern too. Any Bundesliga fan knows it's the hardest team in the league to break in to for a talented youngster. Gianluca Gaudino & Sinan Kurt would back that up. 😛 Kimmich is the exception.

His Augsburg stint under Weinzierl is genuinely the only one you can gauge anything from.

I've only seen two, maybe three RMTs with Bellerin in them. I'm building my defence around him [maybe Belly + 4 x 4.5m defenders].... why the lack of love for him?

because of the price plus the first 2 fixtures of Arsenal

Is Bellerin going to return 1.5m worth of points more than Gabriel though?

Based on last year only, that 1.5m got you an additional 89 points, which isn't too bad.

        Is Gabriel guaranteed?

P.S. I'll be playing him every game week so not too fussed about the fixtures.

I think there's no threat of rotation while Mertesacker has a long term injury.

For 6.0m, could Connor Wickham be a bargain? He has fairly good fixtures from the start, and will probably play as a CF as Gayle has gone

    Hi Twisted Saltergater,

Thanks for the spreadsheet you shared a few pages back. Good food for thought! I'm wondering where you got the data from on last season's player prices? Below are a few prices off the sheet vs what I remember the starting prices of these players were last year:

Vardy 5 on sheet; wasn't he 5.5 or 6 to start?
    Mahrez 5 on sheet; I remember 5.5
Kane 5 on sheet; I think he started around 9 last year
Yaya 11 on sheet; started between 8 and 9?

Hey, yep, I saw some gremlins but thought I had most of them corrected. It was from a post on here at the end of the 14/15 season. I'll correct those pronto!

The 14/15 starting prices only affects the graph in the first link I posted, not the breakdown of average points per 16/17 price. Let me know if you see any others.

I'm interested in using this to see how prices of particular players have changed since last season

Interesting! One of the ideas that crossed my mind was to plot average points, or even max points for each shift in price bracket. So something like:

            -5 -4.5 -4 -3.5 -3 -2.5 -2 -1.5 -1 -0.5 0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 5 5.5 6

With this being the price change form the previous season, and bars illustrating the change in points. It would allow us to see which player justified their price hike, such as Kane, or suffered second season syndrome. Vice versa, Hazard's price drop may means he scores more points this season (he'd struggle not to, tbh!).
