Great Expectations

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

I don't see much Southampton in people's teams so far, yet VVD was one of my go-to FPL defenders last year. Are people waiting to see how the new manager will play out? I'm considering investing from the beginning.

Some interesting selections, on the whole I like it. But Darmian not nailed. Looks like Mourinho may start season with Valencia there (especially after 3 assists against Galatasaray)
Would go for Haz over Mkh (and then change Willian for someone at 7.0/6.5 - Rooney not an awful shout at all. Good chance of goals early in the season.

The difference between the comments on here ("template") and the casuals picks on Fantasy is pretty big.

De Gea and Cech - most selected goalies
Payet, Mahrez, Ozil, Kante - most selected midfielders (Alli, Dier, Fletcher also high on the list)

Either gonna work out really well, or.....

    1. Pariße
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Casuals dont know that the right 4.5m GKs are very close 5.5m ones, they also dont know that Ozil and Payet are going to be rested, Mahrez is unsettled and that Kante is a defensive mid and not a bargain.

    Shaw - Baines - Souare
    Hazard - Mahrez - Eriksen - Townsend
    Aguero - Benteke - Negredo

    Jakupovic - Snodgrass - Taylor - Friend

    - Souare / Taylor / Friend will rotate
    - Snodgrass / Negredo will rotate
    - Benteke is in there providing he moves to Palace. If he doesn't move before

Two 6.5 defenders and two good goalkeepers presuming your playing 4-4-2? If playing 3-4-3 i would downgrade both Bellerin and Toby and upgrade midfield and perhaps maybe a striker. Also I do not see the need for two good goalkeepers.
      Needs work but good luck.

Surely these two are obvious choices?
Martial -- Forward classed as a midfielder. Should get plenty of game time.
Funes Mori -- Jagielka injured, Stones on the way out. Four goals last season, and didn't play every week.

Martial - A lot are going with Zlatan but yes Martial is great value @ 9.5 with more goal threat and PL experience than Miki but not 100% OOP because he'll play out wide most of the time.

Funds Mori - Decent but Coleman / Baines for 0.5 more offer more IMO.

Lukaku at £9m seems good value but I can look past the fact if I down grade to Negredo/Wilson/Gray that 2.5m saving transforms my 3 playing defends from:
    Stones Pieter Friend to
    Coleman Walker Van Dijk

Who's the best 5.0 def option?

  25. Bøwstring The Carp

Preseason minutes per goals/ assists (from those we expect to feature)

    Top 10
    Hazard - 12.5 minutes
    Rooney - 33.5 minutes
    Barrow - 34 minutes
    Gray - 35.5 minutes
    Defoe - 40 minutes
Origi, Silva, Aguero, Ibrahimovic - 45 minutes
    Routledge - 46.3 minutes
    Diomandé - 48.3 minutes
    Mata - 52.3 minutes
    Rhodes - 53.75 minutes

Obviously some have a smaller sample size than others

He's pushing Montero for a spot and at the moment I think he is first choice

He's played a lot of minutes and contributed to goals in various games. Only problem is he is classified as a forward 5.0m 😕

Martial better option out of the two anyway IMO just go for him (if no Zlatan)

        This

The way I see it is, Mkhitaryan will be the main provider of crosses.
Martial likes to come in from the wing since he's not a natural winger (right-footed)

So basically he's a 2nd striker when Mkhitaryan has the ball.
Some of his crosses will meet Martial, some will be flicked on by Zlatan, some will be score by Zlatan.

Either way Martial will improve on his goal tally from last year imo, and with the addition of CS points and an extra point per goal we should see a significant points return considering his price rise

          Great minds Bow! 😉

I had him in from the start playing a 3-5-2 but recently switched to Zlatan and a 3-4-3.

            In summary, imo

            Mkhitaryan - creative/ assists
            Martial/ Ibra - goals, goals

    Foster (Jaku)
Valencia, van Dijk, Souare (Naylor, Lenihan)

    Kun, Ibra, Gray

    Cheers!

Before his injury Shaw was looking like a world beater, he'll be top scoring defender in the season for me

Yeah, Shaw is a pretty safe bet but Tony V has been whipping in some dangerous crosses like back in the day.

I'm still not sold on Lamela but could be a great differential for a bargain price. Alternative is going Lamela -> Eriksen, Ayew -> Deulofeu/Fischer
