Great Expectations

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

Gw1 you'd have 7.5 and 5.5 mids on the bench? Not sure about that...

Darmian not nailed, too much money in the defence anyway

I think it's a good team, been tinkering with something similar myself.
Don't really like the Firmino pick considering their fixtures, and we don't know if Sagna and Deulofeu will be nailed.
Other than that I like it

nice, I'm tempted by Delofeu & Ayew as out of pos. forwards and low budget defs
Having Ibra + Aguero could give you that edge but I can't face leaving out Mikh + KDB.

Better defense than mine as I've gone a similar route. Good team! I've got Mahrez in alongside Firmino and Hazard so that 5.5 defender you got there is a luxury I can't afford ha!

How do you guys think the Arsenal - Liverpool game will pan out. Do you see a spanking with the injured Arsenal team? Would pool players be a good punt for an early wildcard team? Mane/Coutinho seems tempting for me.

Sometime when I watch Firmino, he doesn't seem convincing at all, then he still manages goals. I just Mane as the stand out options. From their friendlies, I saw Mane as the one that consistently produces the best attacks. Firmino is definitely on the radar though. Can't what he did last season.

Arsenal will have Ramsey and Sanchez back it seems.
Mightnt be as under strength as some would think.

Saying that- even as an Arsenal fan.. Firmino is in my side..
      Form (What form?) over fixtures..

As many others, I'm on the Firmino camp. Was one of the first names on my team as well. Attacking midfielder for an attacking team, that will at some point play further up after the striker gets injured? 10.0? Sounds good to me. Wait, just 8.5 you say? Bargain.

    5. _Freddo

The Arsenal team won't be that injured, Cech, Bellerin, Monreal, Xhaka, Elneny, Coquelin, Chamberlain, Iwobi all ready to start, Ramsey, Sanchez both going on the tour this week so both of those likely to be involved.

if Gabriel returns it's only really a CB and CF short of a normal side.

People act like Wenger will send out a league cup side.

    This is my team :

    Foster, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Terry, Evans, Friend, Pieters
    Hazard, Ayew, Tadic, Townsend, Capoue
    Aguero, Ibra, Wilson

    1) Do you think only one £8+ midfielder is enough ?
    2) Do you think I need Spurs coverage ?
    3) Would you choose another £6.5 forward than Wilson ?
    4) Is there a better £11 duo than Shaw-Terry to begin the season with?

      1) I think it's enough since you have Hazard, Aguero and Ibra, giving you 3 good candidates for captain
      2) It wouldn't be a bad idea to get Eriksen or Alli, but I don't think it's a must-have
      3) Difficult question. If Austin is playing I reckon he could be the best of the 6.5s, but at this stage we just don't know.
      4) For 11 I think Shaw-Terry looks like the best combination atm, especially with Zouma injured.

Doubt lallana will start regularly given liverpools other attacking players

Don't get all the love for tadic/ayew/siggy

Personally I'd take Fabregas and Barkley over them any day of the week

tadic and ayew I get. both look to be playing v far forward this year and are well priced I think. fabregas looks to be sititng further back from what we've seen. barkley may be great but he is very inconsistent

That's where I disagree, conte has made a big thi about matic, I think with Oscar looking like going Fabregas will play 10, making him an outstanding option

    Jaku, Forster
    Morgan, Shaw, Pieters, Paredes, Stones
    Fletcher, Bolasie, Martial, Deulofeu, Hazard
    Gray, Kun, Long.

4.0 in the bank, feeling I need to upgrade somewhere, but i dont know.

Look at some templates others have posted. Either get Ibra and downgrade defence or strengthen Bolasie to someone who can shoot like and Paredes for someone who will play

Kos isn't expected to start GW 1. Ibe not very good. Austin needs monitoring in the next 2 Friendlies to be confident of him starting. Toby A might not be fit either.

Kos is injured. Terry will be rotated. Toby too expensive. Ibe is too risky.

3 x WBA & 3 x Boro is what Tosey would go for!

Down to my last 3 picks (at least for now haha) would you rather:

    A) Courtois + Ayew + Tadic
    B) Foster + Hazard + Redmond/Bojan
    C) 5.0 keeper + Hazard + Gradel

    Have no Chelsea players atm.
