Our series of summer articles, focussing on Fantasy assets who underperformed in the previous season, gets underway with a look at Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

In spite of a hugely disappointing 2015/16 campaign, there’s no disputing the winger’s position as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) royalty.

Year on year, the Blues midfielder had upped his output after arriving at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2012/13 season – totals of 190, 202 and 233 points were indicative of his spot as one of the most explosive, and reliable, options for our five-man midfields.

Until last season.

Hampered by a hip problem, Hazard struggled for consistency of both output and pitch time.

The Belgian netted just once in the first 34 matches – courtesy of a deflected effort against Arsenal in Gameweek 6 – and toppled off our radars as the Blues’ title defence fell to pieces, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Although the arrival of Guus Hiddink helped steady the ship and transformed the likes of Willian as a viable route into the Chelsea midfield, Hazard failed to find his best form until the tail end of the season.

Four goals in the final five fixtures was too little, too late, though served a timely reminder of his talents as we headed into the close-season.

Delving into the data, Hazard’s creativity more or less stayed the same last term. Despite earning just five FPL assists, an average of 35.3 minutes per key pass was more or less identical to his 2014/15 numbers, where he teed up a team-mate every 35.6 minutes and created more chances (99) than any player in the top-flight.

The Belgian’s drop in goal threat was another matter altogether. Second only to Alexis Sanchez in midfield when in came to finding the net in 2014/15 (14 strikes to 16), he produced an effort every 45.2 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

Last time around, Hazard fired an attempt every 64.8 minutes over his 31 appearances (25 starts) all season. Managing just 14 shots on target over the entire campaign, it’s fair to say that the winger has significant room for improvement as the Blues look to regroup under new manager Antonio Conte.

The Prospects

Having dropped in price to 10.0 in FPL, there’s no doubt that Hazard looks an enticing option for the upcoming campaign.

With Diego Costa seemingly edging towards the exit door and Michy Batshuayi settling into his new surrounds, the winger has already claimed 12% ownership – making him the tenth most popular midfielder to date.

Certainly, the Belgian could hardly have asked for a better start to life under Conte at the weekend.

Emerging from the bench to score twice in a half-hour cameo against Real Madrid, he was intriguingly handed a role through the middle in the new manager’s 4-2-4 formation and, according to the Italian, it’s a spot he could take up in the campaign ahead:

“Eden Hazard played 30 minutes and he is recovering a good shape. I like him in this position, like a forward, and he can be a good solution for us. Also playing as a winger. To play as a second forward he must improve his shape but he is working and he knows his shape can a lot in the same way as the other players.â€

Clearly, Hazard’s appeal would merely be strengthened if he’s handed a more central role next time out. As it is, though, the Belgian’s history suggests he’ll be well worth the outlay even if he reprises his left flank berth, though Conte’s decision to move to two up front could force a reassessment of his side’s attack.

The Blues have mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation during Hazard’s time at the club and if Conte decides on two centre forwards, the likes of Batshuayi – at a price of 9.0 – could be promoted in our thinking. The new striker racked up 17 goals and nine assists for a Marseille outfit that finished just nine points clear of the drop zone last season and will look more assured of minutes if Costa departs.

Conte’s choice of number one spot-kick taker could sway opinion. Hazard was uncharacteristically poor from penalties last season but his previous record may well persuade the new manager to name him as first-choice.

This would also heighten his appeal when compared to other premium priced midfielders – at present, no other option in the centre of the park costing 9.5 and over is first-choice for spot-kicks at their respective club.

Although he returned late to training due to Belgium’s Euro 2016 progress, Hazard is hoping to start against AC Milan in midweek and is confident he’ll be ready in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

Having served up 37 goals and 36 assists in the three seasons prior to the last one, there’s a hope that 2015/16 will be no more than an anomaly in Hazard’s Fantasy career.

For Conte, the upside of last year’s disastrous title defence means that Chelsea have no European matches on their agenda, allowing the new manager to focus fully on domestic matters.

With rest and rotation a non-factor, then, the omens are looking good that Hazard can rediscover his spark and offer us the option of a fixture-proof, big-hitter once again.

Can't believe I took Lukaku out for the pig last night! Sounded like Luka not interested anymore....

Am on holiday in Malta so not a lot of Internet connection where I'm staying, means less tinkering I suppose.

Only a trial at the mo. We're always taking youngsters on trials, they don't always sign up. The club have been busy bolstering the youth though, U18s mostly. Already 7/8 have signed.

He could sign though. An U21 forward is needed.

Not sure on routledge. He's a gamble for me but he's scored 5 so far in the pre season and possible ayew transfer has got me interested. And his 5.0 price tag means at worst he's just a bench fodder that I spent an extra 0.5m more than I needed to.

Not A Valdes fan, been awful last 2 season, prefer many others @4.5
Parades won't play and seen as high ownership price surely go down....
      Prefer likes of Walker/Valencia/Shaw for 5.5m DEF's
Fischer may go to Olympics with Denmark so keep eye as could miss 2+ games at start
Tadic could be very good but would like to see a cple of SOT games first to see how they shape up
Kante for fpl a huge no no for me-won't score that well
      Siggy solid, but prefer Ayew/Arnie/Barkley/Deu

Hope that's not too harsh...... 🙂

Just a throw away post about the state of junior football in the North of England.

A few folk will have followed my posts last winter when my team in the NW didn't play a match all winter from the end of October until early April due to bad weather and crap pitches.

I'm on holiday in Dorset and met a manager of an U15's team here that didn't miss a single match all season.

How can the same league rules apply for running junior football in places like Dorset as Lancashire?....

It's down to money and the state of the area I'd imagine. Sad but true

If they had the money i'd hope to see 4G pitches springing up across the country, it may not be grass but at least we have a game.

Dunno what the answer is Parm.

I do know that asking kids to be available every Sunday morning for months on end only to do a P-P doesn't encourage sport in any way, shape or form...

          Quite the opposite.

    2. Get up ya bum
      • 16 Years

Probably a drainage thing. I coach my kids team too and our home pitch sucks. Gets closed and is a pool after almost any rain whereas the away pitches are much better.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

        Many reasons.

The top and bottom of it is that junior football is impossible to organise in winter for places like Lancashire, Wales, Scotland....

We ended up having to play ten games in less than a month last year....that's a tall order for pro's, never mind kids.

        Time for summer football.

That is interesting. Yet I can think of Numerous professional footballers who have come out of Lancashire but not so many from Dorset.

      What is all that about?

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Dorset really doesn't have anywhere near the cultural footy history of Lancashire.

What would be more interesting would be to find out how many great junior footballers stop playing footy in Lancashire in their early teens due to wasting their time...

        I know it's a lot for a fact...

Of course. But it is strange how some parts of the country produce nothing. Football is still played in these places.

Assuming Williams moves to Everton, which is stronger to start the season:

    A) Wlliams - Gabriel - Firmino

    B) Evans - Souare - Mahrez

I much prefer Leicester's early fixtures to Liverpool's, but having Mahrez instead of Firmino clearly impacts the quality of defense.

    Cheers!

Am worried about Wenger signing competition for Gabriel given recent comments re experience. Might be worth waiting until after transfer window before bringing him in. Plus their 1st 2 games aren't great

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply.

Change Gabriel to Dawson (or another 5.0 that you fancy) and what do you think is better? I'm just trying to weigh Mahrez vs. Firmino and the impact that spreading that extra 1.0M can have on my defense.

      A...and it isn't even close.

I'm not too convinced that Wenger likes Gabriel enough to trust him as a week in week out nailed on pick. Maybe as a rotator, but he's been pretty quick to announce he needs another CB of note.

Thanks, Doc. See my note above. The Gabriel selection is as much as 5.0 placeholder as anything. So I'm sure your answer would become an even more resounding "A" with a more nailed-on defender instead of Gabriel.

        1. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Absolutely. You need to keep as many 5.0 defensive picks within you "pool" as possible.

If you pick (maybe) Dawson and he falls to 4.9 in the first week then you haven't just lost 0.1....what you've lost is an easy transfer to Jones, Lovren, Williams, Jagielka, etc, etc, etc....

That "5.0 placeholder" thing is really important in that position.

Something like Cedric and Byram as third defender rotation was risky. Now with Pied arriving just more complicated again. Pied was at Nice with Puel so assume he starts? What price ye think he gets 5? 4.5 would be nice.

that is easily the best two teams to rotate. I have Byram but figured it was temporary. Gonna cause big ripples if he's a 5.0.

A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, “My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?”

The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound.

The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”

The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes about his merry way.

Some years later, the same man breaks down in front of the same monastery.

The monks accept him, feed him, even fix his car. That night, he hears the same strange noise that he had heard years earlier.

The next morning, he asks what it is, but the monks reply, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”

The man says, “All right, all right. I’m *dying* to know. If the only way I can find out what that sound was is to become a monk, how do I become a monk?”

The monks reply, “You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will become a monk.”

The man sets about his task. Forty-five years later, he returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He says, “I have traveled the earth and have found what you have asked for. There are 145,236,284,232 blades of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382 sand pebbles on the earth.”

The monks reply, “Congratulations. You are now a monk. We shall now show you the way to the sound.”

The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, “The sound is right behind that door.”

The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked. He says, “Real funny. May I have the key?”

The monks give him the key, and he opens the door.

Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone.

The man demands the key to the stone door.

The monks give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby.

He demands another key from the monks, who provide it.

Behind that door is another door, this one made of sapphire.

So it went until the man had gone through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, and amethyst.

Finally, the monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.”

The man is relieved to no end.

He unlocks the door, turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound.

But I can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk!

Going for my first RMT folks, so any help appreciated. Majoring on flexibility & opening fixtures, although tossing up a couple of options. Let me know what u reckon:

    Foster/Heaton
    Shaw, Azpi, Stones, Wolly, Kone
    Martial, Alli, Tadic, Townsend, Capoue
    Aguero, Luk (if CHE), Gray
    0.5itb

    A) Alli, Townsend, Luk 0.5itb
    B) Haz, Deulofeu, Tekkers (if CPL), 0.5itb

Probs bring in Gabriel, Payet & Giroud after a few weeks. Thanks for any thoughts!

What do you think of Diamonde in 352 instead of Capoue in 343? More points in midfield?

It really just comes down to your confidence in another 6.5 mid (Townsend, Deulofeu, etc.) outperforming your 6.5 forward (Gray, Negredo, Carroll, etc.).

I'm still likely to go with a 3-4-3 because of the depth of forward options at 6.5. You could probably go the entire season just switching out those third forwards based on form and/or fixtures. I think that might be harder to do with the midfielders.

Thoughts on this? Gone for a different approach as none of the cheaper strikers convince me enough.
4-5-1/5-4-1, rotating a defender and midfielder, and swapping Aguero if he becomes injured/plays a tough team.

    Courtois - Jakupovic
    Azpilicueta - Shaw - Morgan - Stones - Cedric
    Hazard - Mahrez - Nolito/Silva - Firmino - Feghouli
    Aguero - 4.5 -4.5
    0.5m ITB

    Stones. Williams. Shaw
    Hazard. Tadic. Siggy. Deulofeu
    Kun. Ibra. Gray

    Jakupovic. Capoue. Pieters. Lenihan

Otamendi and Kompany are miles better as CBs than Stones, so it is interesting when those two are fit...

People actually think Stones is better than Otamendi? I'd say he isn't good enough as his new replacement at Everton...

This is my question too. I've heard Kompany will lose his spot..

Seems to me there are three (mostly) capable options there

      1. Saniul
        • 12 Years

Naah, Kompany is their best defender if fit. Even if he plays 20 games per season, City have a substantially higher chance of keeping a cleanie in those games. If he is injured, that's another thing.

He's confortable with being on the ball though, has an eye for a pass, qualities which pep may well admire over otamendi

Yeah, Hart is no Neuer though... Stones' inability to be anything like a old school CB could hurt you in the PL.

I do agree that it doesn't really suit the PL but if there's any manager in the world right now who would try introducing a young ball-playing CB into the PL it'd be pep guardiola

Yes, can't disagree with that. Pep is the only one who could make him great.

See above mate. We aren't paying 50m for him to sit on the pine. Not another Raheem (who Pep will actually sort out you watch mind you)

Vinny will not be our fearless leader anymore and he is all but done sadly. Regardless of being 'fit', his legs are gone.

Ota is just a walking calamity

      1. Saniul
        • 12 Years

Raheem had some qualities of a winger. Stones has fewer qualities of a CB... There must be something I'm missing here, personally felt Funes Mori is notches better than Stones every time they played together.
