Our series of summer articles, focussing on Fantasy assets who underperformed in the previous season, gets underway with a look at Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

In spite of a hugely disappointing 2015/16 campaign, there’s no disputing the winger’s position as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) royalty.

Year on year, the Blues midfielder had upped his output after arriving at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2012/13 season – totals of 190, 202 and 233 points were indicative of his spot as one of the most explosive, and reliable, options for our five-man midfields.

Until last season.

Hampered by a hip problem, Hazard struggled for consistency of both output and pitch time.

The Belgian netted just once in the first 34 matches – courtesy of a deflected effort against Arsenal in Gameweek 6 – and toppled off our radars as the Blues’ title defence fell to pieces, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Although the arrival of Guus Hiddink helped steady the ship and transformed the likes of Willian as a viable route into the Chelsea midfield, Hazard failed to find his best form until the tail end of the season.

Four goals in the final five fixtures was too little, too late, though served a timely reminder of his talents as we headed into the close-season.

Delving into the data, Hazard’s creativity more or less stayed the same last term. Despite earning just five FPL assists, an average of 35.3 minutes per key pass was more or less identical to his 2014/15 numbers, where he teed up a team-mate every 35.6 minutes and created more chances (99) than any player in the top-flight.

The Belgian’s drop in goal threat was another matter altogether. Second only to Alexis Sanchez in midfield when in came to finding the net in 2014/15 (14 strikes to 16), he produced an effort every 45.2 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

Last time around, Hazard fired an attempt every 64.8 minutes over his 31 appearances (25 starts) all season. Managing just 14 shots on target over the entire campaign, it’s fair to say that the winger has significant room for improvement as the Blues look to regroup under new manager Antonio Conte.

The Prospects

Having dropped in price to 10.0 in FPL, there’s no doubt that Hazard looks an enticing option for the upcoming campaign.

With Diego Costa seemingly edging towards the exit door and Michy Batshuayi settling into his new surrounds, the winger has already claimed 12% ownership – making him the tenth most popular midfielder to date.

Certainly, the Belgian could hardly have asked for a better start to life under Conte at the weekend.

Emerging from the bench to score twice in a half-hour cameo against Real Madrid, he was intriguingly handed a role through the middle in the new manager’s 4-2-4 formation and, according to the Italian, it’s a spot he could take up in the campaign ahead:

“Eden Hazard played 30 minutes and he is recovering a good shape. I like him in this position, like a forward, and he can be a good solution for us. Also playing as a winger. To play as a second forward he must improve his shape but he is working and he knows his shape can a lot in the same way as the other players.”

Clearly, Hazard’s appeal would merely be strengthened if he’s handed a more central role next time out. As it is, though, the Belgian’s history suggests he’ll be well worth the outlay even if he reprises his left flank berth, though Conte’s decision to move to two up front could force a reassessment of his side’s attack.

The Blues have mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation during Hazard’s time at the club and if Conte decides on two centre forwards, the likes of Batshuayi – at a price of 9.0 – could be promoted in our thinking. The new striker racked up 17 goals and nine assists for a Marseille outfit that finished just nine points clear of the drop zone last season and will look more assured of minutes if Costa departs.

Conte’s choice of number one spot-kick taker could sway opinion. Hazard was uncharacteristically poor from penalties last season but his previous record may well persuade the new manager to name him as first-choice.

This would also heighten his appeal when compared to other premium priced midfielders – at present, no other option in the centre of the park costing 9.5 and over is first-choice for spot-kicks at their respective club.

Although he returned late to training due to Belgium’s Euro 2016 progress, Hazard is hoping to start against AC Milan in midweek and is confident he’ll be ready in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

Having served up 37 goals and 36 assists in the three seasons prior to the last one, there’s a hope that 2015/16 will be no more than an anomaly in Hazard’s Fantasy career.

For Conte, the upside of last year’s disastrous title defence means that Chelsea have no European matches on their agenda, allowing the new manager to focus fully on domestic matters.

With rest and rotation a non-factor, then, the omens are looking good that Hazard can rediscover his spark and offer us the option of a fixture-proof, big-hitter once again.

Heavy midfield + Aguero makes the rest a bit light though.

Agreed. Might take another look at some mid price options in the midfield to allow me to beef up the def a bit.

I don't mind the look of Siggy or Tadic. Would be confident on Firmino if not for rotation risk.

        Thanks for reply.

And top of page for first post! Defence a bit weak for me but fairly decent. I can see KDB and Kun working for the first few weeks but longer term I would downgrade KDB to a 9.5 ish and use money on defence.

How beautiful! That worked out well indeed 😀

Yeah defence is always a problem for me. It's too juicy seeing a team with a strong midfield and forwards. I'll see if I can bring myself to sacrifice KDB or Mikky to make room for another premium def.

        Cheers for reply.

    Foster, Heaton
    Shaw, Pieter, Stones, Baines, Evans
    Hazard, Fabregas, Ayew, Mkhitaryan, Watson
    Austin, Aguero, Gray

£1m banked to resolve Stones if he doesn't leave soon.

Teams like Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and United keep a lot of clean sheets, they are valuable assists to your defence. With the high ownership of their players, if they do keep a clean sheet and your players don't, it's a serious dent in your rank.

      1. Sz21
        • 14 Years

Thats where Aguero/Ibra/ Hazard come in.
They are my high ownership guys who I am hoping do well.

Plenty of opps for cleanies, BAP's and so on with this defence too.

Im debating whether to go for a 5.5m in there but nobody is jumping out at me.

        Williams at Everton (or other)
Stones at City have the fixtures and great CS potential in their own right and then you add in Friend, Souare, Pieters and Foster and its seems ok I think.

Those players will give you attacking returns though not defensive returns. The premium defenders are a premium price for a reason.

I disagree. Clean sheets are not that predictable, even among the "big teams", especially early in the season. Better to go cheap on defence and to load up on attacking assets to begin the season.

Of course the clean sheets are predictable. The big sides have consistently topped the clean sheet charts every single year since the BPL has begun.

Not in the 1st 4/5 fixtures tho! Be interesting to see stats for these..

The big sides improve defensively especially as the season goes on..
Cant be waiting 5 or 6 games for the likes of Chelsea/ United/Arsenal etc to get their defence in shape.
It'll be WC time by then anwyay.

Not at the beginning of the season, they don't.
Over the course of the season, sure. But even then, it is hard to predict which ones will be the best defensively. Everyone thought Chelsea would be a reliable source of clean sheets last year, but were anything but.

Yeah nidge long did displace pelle at times at the end of the season iirc. Before that was usually used wide.
This season though I am 90% sure he will play in a pair up front.
Puel has long favoured 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 diamond and saints look set for the latter atm. Way I see it his tactics should bring Austin, tadic and the full backs into our thinking.
There is jay Rodriguez and Redmond to worry about with Austin though. Can't say he is nailed just yet.

For sure mate, I think if Puel's planning on putting a big emphasis on building through the thirds like he did for Barfa in order to create triangles to release & free him, Tadic will likely be that guy.

FB's as well benefit a lot from this, they'll be the main men to create the width & pace in the final third. Could strike some god in there.

I haven't seen it but I guess so, really unfortunate with Karius' injury. Need a new LB or even 2, but of course as usual the club has lowballed on Chilwell and will probably end up paying a massive fee on a bang average player.

It doesn't make that much sense though to not just pay it considering the circumstances. We're supposedly looking to Amavi now who did look excellent but Villa don't want to lose him. By all accounts Chilwell is ready to play and will have a very bright future. What I've seen written about Hector (that I trust, though I've not seen him personally) is that he really isn't all that, average and he'd cost a massive amount. :/

Hector is quality mate. I rate him highly.
Chilwell by the sounds of it will have a great future but why would the club pay top money for a kid to play backup to Moreno and could be available for nothing in 12 months.
I think they are willing to spend but on someone that will at least compete with moreno for starts.
I don't necessarily agree. Would love to have chilwell at the club, I get why they wouldn't stump up though.
I expect we will sign someone. Otherwise the smith sale makes no sense. Hector, de sciglio, amavi, Robertson all possible

Chilwell would have been our starter, mostly on account of how awful Moreno is, and Leicester didn't want to lose him so I think it was either buy him now or never really. Very, very disappointing.

Would like to discuss Lamea and Dele...

Are both nailed? Neither has been in the past, what changed?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Shaw, Stones, McCauley (Friend, Souare)
    Mkhi, Mahrez, KDB, Siggy (Hojbjerg)
    Aguero, Gray, Wilson

I think I'm just about settled with this (assuming Stones move goes through).

I like it. Looking at a similar structure, myself. I'd consider KdB to Hazard, however.

I think the 4.5 midfielder is really off putting this year. Hojberg was at Bayern but if he was this wonder kid why didn't the Bavarians keep him? Fin at least .5m to beef up that spot.

Might go down this path if Stones stays. Push him to a 4.5 and use the money on that last bench mid for cover.

Late night tinkering, this is what I came up with. Feedback if you don't mind.

    De Gea Jakupovic

Van Dijk Simpson N.Taylor Pieters McAuley

    Hazard Eriksen Sigurdsson Shaqiri Fischer

    Giroud Aguero Carroll

Downgrade Fischer to a 4.5 and upgrade Shaqiri to Ayew or Tadic.

Both are good picks. Just monitor Alli's fitness don't think he's played a part in pre season yet.

That's true, Eriksen has had a full rest. Alli is young though I don't think it will effect him that much.

    Alli or Firmino?

For me it's about role + fixtures.
Alli's role seems slightly more secure in the way he plays and also has the better fixtures. People's thoughts?

I still think Firmino. I prefer his position in the team and that an awful lot of the play goes through him.

I'm looking at both but will wait to see how a couple of games. If I had to choose between them on GW1 I'd take Alli.

Firmino. I won't have him to start the season, but I'll likely get him in once Liverpool's fixtures ease a bit.

I hope that I don't have a blind spot when it comes to Alli. Just seems overpriced.

    Which team looks better?
    A)
    Courtois
    Shaw Walker McAuley Fernandez
    Mkhi Eriksen Hazard Ayew
    Aguero Lukaku

    Subs: Jakupovic, Capoue, Paredes, Campbell

    B)
    Cech
    Shaw Williams Azpi McAuley
    Barkley Eriksen Hazard Feghouli
    Aguero Ibra

    Subs: Jakupovic, Pieters, Capoue, Campbell

Suggestions for changes would be appreciated.

It's hard this season with all the midfielders going up in price. If I go with a more trad 3-5-2 I get this, but obviously the defense looks weaker. I go with a 4-4-2 an the DEF and MID looks good but then I have Aguero with either Austin or Gray and then bench fodder with Grabban or Diomande. I'm wondering if I should just punt on it and be happy with a stronger defense.

    This is for a 3-5-2:

    De Gea / Pickford
    Morgan / Mcauley / Soare / Fernandez / Friend
    Hazard / Ayew / Mahrez / Ozil / Leko
    Aguero / Lukaku / Grabban

Help needed for a relative newbie...

I keep hearing people talk about how it is important to have a 'flexible' starting squad in order to be able to capitalize on early bolters.

I get that in principle but can anyone explain to me what makes a starting squad flexible and how it would be put into practice over the first few weeks?

It means having most price points represented at all positions. That way, most transfers can be done without extensive surgery.
If you have all-cheap defence, then getting an expensive one may mean downgrading elsewhere.
If you have all expensive midfield, then jumping on a budget bandwagon means leaving a lot of money on the bench.
