Sunday and Monday’s pre-season matches involve an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stunner, a Simon Mignolet mistake and a West Brom humbling at the hands of non-league opposition.

Here’s how the trio of fixtures panned out.

Chivas de Guadalajara 1 Arsenal 3

Goals from Rob Holding, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chuba Akpom secured a fine win for Arsenal against their Mexican opponents late on Sunday.

Holding opened his Arsenal account in his second run-out when he turned in a Callum Chambers cross before Akpom sealed the victory in the second half, with Mathieu Debuchy providing the assist.

It was Oxlade-Chamberlain’s brilliant solo goal that stole the headlines, and coach Arsene Wenger later conceded that the upcoming campaign is a crucial one for the England man:

“It’s a very important season for him. [He gives us] power, penetration. He has it all, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It’s difficult what he doesn’t have – that’s why I would like him to get to the level he can go to. Maybe he doesn’t completely believe himself how good he can be and that’s the final step for himâ€.

Wenger gave Santi Cazorla his first start of pre-season, although the Spaniard is unlikely to make the Gunners’ Premier League opener against Liverpool as he recovers from long-term injury.

“He is our technical security in midfield and we missed him for five or six months last season. At the moment he is not completely there on the fitness front. That’s why I took him off at half-time. He’s a bit behind the others physically but I think he will be alright, maybe not on August 15th, but at the end of August he should be alrightâ€.

Discussing his defensive options, Wenger again hailed the impressive Holding, though also revealed that Callum Chambers and Krystian Bielik could be part of his plans for Gameweek 1:

“At the moment we have Per Mertesacker out and we have Laurent Koscielny still on holiday, plus Gabriel. One of them will play at the start of the season or at least be in the squad. At the moment I have a look at everybody and after I will make my final decision. But as you just said, it’s true that Holding adapted very quickly. All the three have top quality and all the three miss a little bit of experience. I’ll have to make a decision in two weeksâ€.

Arsenal are next in action on Friday, facing Viking in Norway, and Wenger confirmed that the match will involve Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez, but Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud and Koscielny are not expected to feature.

The club, meanwhile, have rejected a bid by West Ham to take left-back Kieran Gibbs on loan.

Arsenal XI: Ospina (Martinez 68); Bellerin (Debuchy 46), Chambers (Bielik 46), Holding, Monreal (Gibbs 46); Xhaka (Elneny 46), Coquelin (Willock 65); Oxalde-Chamberlain (Zelalem 64), Cazorla (Campbell 46), Iwobi (Reine-Adelaide 65); Walcott (Akpom 46).

Liverpool 1 Roma 2

Jurgen Klopp handed Alex Manninger a debut in goal and used a total of 23 players as the Reds’ US tour ended in defeat.

Sheyi Ojo’s header from a Dejan Lovren assist had levelled matters before the break but Manninger’s replacement, Simon Mignolet, was at fault for Roma’s second-half winner from former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah.

Emre Can was given his first start of pre-season following Euro 2016 while new signing Georginio Wijnaldum, priced at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League game, enjoyed an extended run-out and showed flashes of his attacking threat.

There was a late injury scare when full-back Alberto Moreno limped off with what looked like a hamstring problem, but Klopp was quick to play down the issue after the final whistle:

“Yes (he is okay). Dead leg in the hamstring. He couldn’t activate the muscle so you cannot play. That’s how it is.â€

Christian Benteke was one of just two unused substitutes on the night, with Klopp using Daniel Sturridge and then Danny Ings up front. Divock Origi – who netted in the previous friendly win against Milan – missed out with a groin problem.

Liverpool XI: First half: Manninger, Clyne, Klavan, Lovren, Milner, Can, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Ojo, Sturridge.

Liverpool XI: Second half: Mignolet, Moreno (Randall 81), Stewart, Wisdom, Alexander-Arnold, Coutinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum (Brannagan 70), Markovic, Lallana, Ings.

Torquay United 2 WBA 1

The pre-season mantra that it’s all about performances not results didn’t apply to West Brom as they managed neither in losing to non-leaguers Torquay.

New signing Matt Phillips’ first goal for the Baggies, from a Darren Fletcher long ball, was the high point. The fact it came ten minutes from the end said it all.

Priced at 5.5, he and Craig Gardner are the club’s most expensive midfielders in the FPL game, but the former QPR winger looks like a sure starter on August 13, if Albion’s joint-assistant head coach David Kemp is to be believed:

“He got a good goal, he looked bright, put some really good crosses in. That’s what we want him to do, he’s shown that he’s capable of doing that. Hopefully he’ll take that into the Crystal Palace game.â€

With want-away forward Saido Berahino again largely anonymous, the signing of West Ham striker Diafra Sakho can’t come soon enough for an Albion side that Kemp admitted lacks a cutting edge:

“We do lack quality around the opposition’s goal, we’re aware of that and we’re trying to rectify that.â€

West Brom XI: Foster, Chester, McAuley (Olsson 45), Evans (Dawson 45), Wilson, Leko (Fletcher 45), Gardner, Field (Phillips 69), Morrison, McClean, Rondon (Berahino 45).

Too early for Tekkers as things stand, Vardy is an awkward price and throws my team balance a bit, I can see why Ibra appeals Ziro, security of starts/prob a few goals and an easy downgrade, I'm non Ibra btw I was on Lukaku but I'm not happy with all the uncertainty tbh.

Yeah, I did try an Ibra team, but that weakens my mids too much. If Ibra looks essential, I will just have to ditch Kun probably. By then he might be injured from all the pressing Pep will make him do too. 😀

It will be much harder to bring them in to your team if they both start well. Replacing one of them, on the other hand, is much easier.

Personally don't see the need. And if indeed after 3-4 weeks it looks like they will both score 20goals, will have FTs by then and will have known the cheap mids/defs to downgrade to to make some money.

Been playing with Terry and Azpilicueta for days now. Terry's nailed on ness is a worry to me. Cahill is 6.0 and so is Azpi so Cahill is a no go for me. Terry on the other hand has Miazga and Ivanovic to fight for his position. Also should Zouma return before September, he'll probably put Terry straight out, but Zouma would be a straight swap at the same price and Terry would have played the first 2 games which I plan to play him on so I'll take that (at least). Terry also gives me the extra 0.5 which I need.

What is everyone's take on the situation here?

      From Bbc
"Germany midfielder Leroy Sane has completed his move to Manchester City from Schalke for a fee of £37m plus add-ons.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Blues.

He scored eight goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season as Schalke finished fifth, missing out on Champions League qualification for the second year in a row."

Defence looks a bit weak Eden. Vert not certain to be ready yet. Moreno may not play and has terrible fixtures. VvD again better options fixture wise. Mids look great. I'm not a fan of Negredo but each to their own.

I know it's pretty much a template team below but still has some fine-tuning questions...

    Heaton Foster
    Shaw Terry Friend Stones/Williams Souare
    Hazard Fischer Deulofeu Tadic Feghouli
    Ibra Kun Gray

    0.0 itb

    So may I know...
    1. Stones/Williams? Koeman seems okay in building a solid def and Williams seems to be nailed on, but a 5.0 City def is also tempting, provided that both players will make the move.

    2. Don't really like the pick of Souare so any nailed on 4.5 def that rotates well with Stones / Williams and Friend?

    3. Anyone has the stats of home/away performance of Tadic and West Ham team as a whole? Coz Tadic / Feghouli rotates perfectly and I'm planning to play one of them every week.

Thanks a lot in advance and wish you a successful FPL season 🙂

I actually like my front 8 even though having a 5.5 mid starting every week seems risky to start the season.

It's the defence I'm very unsure of, any recommendations?

    Foster - Jaku
    Azpi - Stones - Naylor - Pieters - Friend
    Hazard - Eriksen - Tadic - Gradel - Fletcher
    Kun - Ibra - Gray/Negredo

I would downgrade azpi, plenty of good 5.5mil defenders available and spend to 0.5 on upgrading Naylor
nothing wrong with starting with one of the 5.5mil options imo

if its just the Chelsea defender you're after rather than specifically azpi then why not? he will start until zouma is fit of unless hey sign someone. I'm going to for the first couple of GWs until someone else becomes fit.

    2. Your defence is fine. Nothing wrong with a 4.5M rotation for your 3rd.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Pre Season Stars – Who Is the Real Deal?

So far there have been some prolific scorers in the pre season friendlies. But which will be a Michu, and which a Boselli? Are there any Diomandes in the rough?

To recap all the latest scores from the pre season schedule can be found here.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/pre-season-form-guide/

Here are a few notable scorers who have scored three or more times. Which will you be drafting in?

    Andre Gray – Burnley – 8 goals

    Rhodes – Middlesbrough – 5 goals

    Routledge – Swansea – 5 goals

    Deulofeu – Everton – 3 goals

    Diomande – Hull – 3 goals

    Firmino – Liverpool – 3 goals

    Borini – Sunderland – 3 goals

I'm so bad I didn't even know about that pre-season guide - super handy!

I think Deulofeu could really kick on this season. Not super convinced by Gray, steering clear of Burnley after their last attempt at Prem football.

A lot of people seem convinced that he will be.

Given the opening 3 fixtures I'll take my chances on Negredo I think. It's an easy swap if Gray bangs in a hat trick GW1 🙂

good plan. That's what's stopping me getting Rhodes. At 6m its tricky to catch a Negredo or Gray bandwagon. Gray or Negredo can be a whole bunch of players - lots of choice at 6.5 and below.

      Gray and Firmino for me.

Firmino is proven and at 6.5 Gray can easily become another.

The rest look like rotation risks or Bosellis to me. Deulofeu is looking sharp - but will he really play as a false nine all season - or even at all. If Lukaku goes it'll be for huge cash - plenty to buy a first choice striker that will see Deulofeu back to competing for wing duties.

Personally (and this isn't to say Gray won't do well, because he has all the attributes to perform in this league, in particular his pace and finishing accuracy), I would still steer clear of Gray just because it is "Burnley" and I don't believe they have enough creativity for this league currently. Ings was arguably a better player than Gray when he was playing his first full season at Burnley, and I believe his start was a little sporadic.

At 6.5, I would look no further than Long/Austin (when we know Puel's preferred set-up) or Negredo. Austin and Long have proven they can fully justify that price tag in this league, and even Negredo has to a degree. Had the latter had more minutes at City I wouldn't have put it past him bagging more than 17/18 goals in the league that season.

If I have to I'll move on the bandwagon, but I'd rather start with a safer bet at more creative clubs (and yes, Boro with Fischer, Gaston, Adomah and even Downing offer more than Burnley).

Just my two pence, for what it's worth.

Gray all day. I'm a boro fan and I can tell you they won't score as many goals as Sean dyke's burnley. That's not to say Rhodes won't bag a few, he's got real quality. But burnley will score more and the goals aren't usually spread around their team too much, expect most to be courtesy of gray. Negredo is a big signing for us but I think he will struggle to get the chances he needs playing for Middlesbrough. We are no man city.

Williams at Everton raises a couple of interesting FPL questions.

Firstly, will he be as much of a BAPs monster at Everton as he was at Swansea

Secondly, where does it leave Swansea. £10m for a 30 yo doesn't seem like a bad deal and they have bought a new CB but their lack of transfer activity is a huge off putter from investing in anyone

It's a massive blow to Swansea.. with him and Ayew gone I would really worry about Swansea this year. Maybe Siggy is regretting his decision to stay now!

I think Williams will still be a BAPs monster at Everton.

Swansea look to be adopting an Aston Villa strategy that will end in tears. At 5m I'll be getting Williams - I'm pretty sure he'll have had a guarantee of game time - why move otherwise at his age from a club where he is nailed on and is captain?

Williams at Everton looks great imo.

Swansea 4/1 for the drop to me is a super bet.

What's that leave them we? Routledge, Mo Barrow, Leroy Get.. quare set of boys to get you relegated.

Two issues with this for me:

      1) Coleman and Baines might now drop out of any plans to avoid a double up.

      2) Fernandez (4.5) becomes virtually nailed on rather than a rotation risk with VDH.

      1. Blame the Ref
        • 10 Years

Also, regardless of double up, Williams may well grab the lion's share of bonus points from Baines/Coleman

Have to wait and see whether Swansea's defence will be as resilient without Williams before investing in Fernandez
