Sunday and Monday’s pre-season matches involve an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stunner, a Simon Mignolet mistake and a West Brom humbling at the hands of non-league opposition.

Here’s how the trio of fixtures panned out.

Chivas de Guadalajara 1 Arsenal 3

Goals from Rob Holding, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chuba Akpom secured a fine win for Arsenal against their Mexican opponents late on Sunday.

Holding opened his Arsenal account in his second run-out when he turned in a Callum Chambers cross before Akpom sealed the victory in the second half, with Mathieu Debuchy providing the assist.

It was Oxlade-Chamberlain’s brilliant solo goal that stole the headlines, and coach Arsene Wenger later conceded that the upcoming campaign is a crucial one for the England man:

“It’s a very important season for him. [He gives us] power, penetration. He has it all, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It’s difficult what he doesn’t have – that’s why I would like him to get to the level he can go to. Maybe he doesn’t completely believe himself how good he can be and that’s the final step for him”.

Wenger gave Santi Cazorla his first start of pre-season, although the Spaniard is unlikely to make the Gunners’ Premier League opener against Liverpool as he recovers from long-term injury.

“He is our technical security in midfield and we missed him for five or six months last season. At the moment he is not completely there on the fitness front. That’s why I took him off at half-time. He’s a bit behind the others physically but I think he will be alright, maybe not on August 15th, but at the end of August he should be alright”.

Discussing his defensive options, Wenger again hailed the impressive Holding, though also revealed that Callum Chambers and Krystian Bielik could be part of his plans for Gameweek 1:

“At the moment we have Per Mertesacker out and we have Laurent Koscielny still on holiday, plus Gabriel. One of them will play at the start of the season or at least be in the squad. At the moment I have a look at everybody and after I will make my final decision. But as you just said, it’s true that Holding adapted very quickly. All the three have top quality and all the three miss a little bit of experience. I’ll have to make a decision in two weeks”.

Arsenal are next in action on Friday, facing Viking in Norway, and Wenger confirmed that the match will involve Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez, but Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud and Koscielny are not expected to feature.

The club, meanwhile, have rejected a bid by West Ham to take left-back Kieran Gibbs on loan.

Arsenal XI: Ospina (Martinez 68); Bellerin (Debuchy 46), Chambers (Bielik 46), Holding, Monreal (Gibbs 46); Xhaka (Elneny 46), Coquelin (Willock 65); Oxalde-Chamberlain (Zelalem 64), Cazorla (Campbell 46), Iwobi (Reine-Adelaide 65); Walcott (Akpom 46).

Liverpool 1 Roma 2

Jurgen Klopp handed Alex Manninger a debut in goal and used a total of 23 players as the Reds’ US tour ended in defeat.

Sheyi Ojo’s header from a Dejan Lovren assist had levelled matters before the break but Manninger’s replacement, Simon Mignolet, was at fault for Roma’s second-half winner from former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah.

Emre Can was given his first start of pre-season following Euro 2016 while new signing Georginio Wijnaldum, priced at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League game, enjoyed an extended run-out and showed flashes of his attacking threat.

There was a late injury scare when full-back Alberto Moreno limped off with what looked like a hamstring problem, but Klopp was quick to play down the issue after the final whistle:

“Yes (he is okay). Dead leg in the hamstring. He couldn’t activate the muscle so you cannot play. That’s how it is.”

Christian Benteke was one of just two unused substitutes on the night, with Klopp using Daniel Sturridge and then Danny Ings up front. Divock Origi – who netted in the previous friendly win against Milan – missed out with a groin problem.

Liverpool XI: First half: Manninger, Clyne, Klavan, Lovren, Milner, Can, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Ojo, Sturridge.

Liverpool XI: Second half: Mignolet, Moreno (Randall 81), Stewart, Wisdom, Alexander-Arnold, Coutinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum (Brannagan 70), Markovic, Lallana, Ings.

Torquay United 2 WBA 1

The pre-season mantra that it’s all about performances not results didn’t apply to West Brom as they managed neither in losing to non-leaguers Torquay.

New signing Matt Phillips’ first goal for the Baggies, from a Darren Fletcher long ball, was the high point. The fact it came ten minutes from the end said it all.

Priced at 5.5, he and Craig Gardner are the club’s most expensive midfielders in the FPL game, but the former QPR winger looks like a sure starter on August 13, if Albion’s joint-assistant head coach David Kemp is to be believed:

“He got a good goal, he looked bright, put some really good crosses in. That’s what we want him to do, he’s shown that he’s capable of doing that. Hopefully he’ll take that into the Crystal Palace game.”

With want-away forward Saido Berahino again largely anonymous, the signing of West Ham striker Diafra Sakho can’t come soon enough for an Albion side that Kemp admitted lacks a cutting edge:

“We do lack quality around the opposition’s goal, we’re aware of that and we’re trying to rectify that.”

West Brom XI: Foster, Chester, McAuley (Olsson 45), Evans (Dawson 45), Wilson, Leko (Fletcher 45), Gardner, Field (Phillips 69), Morrison, McClean, Rondon (Berahino 45).

Not liking any of the 2nd forwards at the moment.

    Ibra - cripples your team
Kane - also very expensive and without Dembele
    Vardy - I don't know if he's worth 10m this year
Sturridge - made of glass, tough fixtures and rotation possibility
Giroud - rested for the first gameweek(s)
Costa & Lukaku - transfer news
Batshuayi - How will he settle? Is he nailed?
    Rooney - nah

True, but I removed Mahrez from my draft, because his head might not be straight after all those transfer rumours, Hazard could be the forward in a 4-2-4 line-up and Firmino seems very underpriced.

Good points, I'll reconsider Mahrez and put Vardy upfront untill there's more clarity about the other forwards. I agree on Firmino, he's also pretty much fixture proof.

    repost 🙁

    Hey lads ,
I've been reading articles, comments, templates, rmt's for the last 2+ hours trying to find what people think about the starting 11 in this season's fpl. After changing my team a zilion times ofc I came up with this, considering everything in mind and would like to share it with u, so u can have u're comments.

    Courtois/4.0-jakup
    Baily/Shaw*Coleman/Baines*Pieters/Friend*Souare/McAuely*4.0-amat
    Mkhitaryan*Fabs*Willian*Silva/Ozil/Payet/Mahrez*4.5-fletcer/capoue
    Aguero(c)*Rooney/Giroud*Negredo/Gray/Wilson

First ones anre in my team atm and / is the alternatives for the same price. Only Silva is .5 cheaper.
So my biggest dilemma is going with fabs and willian- 2 mids 7.5m each, but i think its mych better than any alternative. Also Rooney or Giroud is a big concern. Only problem i have atm is not having Kane and dont want to downgrade willian in dier-5.5 mid to get him.

    ?/10

      6.5/10.

Strikers r an issue selection wise for me, I prefer rom and batshuayi to rooney and giroud but i know u already have 2 chelsea midfielders. I would downgrade 1 of willian/fab and upgrade 1 so u have a 8.5 and a 6.5 (firmino and deulofeo). Silva is a good option but might be rotated and played deeper under guardiola so i would start with mahrez due to easy fixtures. I prefer valencia to bailly or shaw but out of bailly and shaw i prefer shaw. Negredo is a good choice.

    Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

RMT please? I've included my reasoning for each position below so please feel free to challenge my thoughts. 🙂

    Mannone (Pickford)
    Shaw, Baines, Stones (Friend, Lenihan)
    Hazard, Bolasie, Redmond, Fischer (Routledge)
    Ibra, Aguero, Vardy

GK's - I know SUN have terrible fixtures, but to be honest I don't rate any of the 'weaker' teams chances of clean sheets so this combo saves me 0.5mil, gives me save points potential, and a set and forget pairing unless SUN bring in another keeper?

Def's - Speaks for itself I guess. Should be quite strong provided Stones nails a starting place at MC and Baines is on all set pieces. If not, I at least have plenty of flexibility to downgrade one and upgrade elsewhere.

Mid's - Probably the weakest link, however there is method to my madness. Hazard is a lock whilst the other picks are in my opinion strong chances to either have break out seasons and score consistently, or at the very least have strong starts given the kind early fixtures, and in turn start some early money making bandwagons. One of the mids will definitely make way early for a 4.5mil player once things become clearer, and this will allow my planned Vardy to Kane move at some point.

Fwd's - Obviously sacrifices were made elsewhere to allow for 3 big hitters up front, and I've decided on this tactic after much thought, and one glaring point that kept entering my mind; Which 3 strikers have the greatest potential to score explosively and the most points over the first few gw's?

    So that's my team!

So please hit me with your thoughts or criticisms and thanks in advance 😉

The money tied up in forwards at least allows for easy downgrades, scary going into the season knowing your mid is weak on paper, but could seriously pay off. Especially if all your forwards kick off strong.

      Interesting.

Personally, I'd opt for Mahrez over Vardy. And I'd want Deulofeu in there with the logic you're taking.

      Vardy -> 4.5
      Routledge -> Mahrez
      Any possible -> Deulofeu

Yes I am, may change Coutinho. But keen to keep Sturridge, 2nd best striker in the league after Aguero IMO.

Sturridge is mint when he's fit. Downgrade Downing and change Coutinho then I'd say.

with the news that giroud wont be back, is anyone tempted by walcott? Down as a midfielder but likely to be leading the line for the first few weeks?

          Not really.

He doesn't work hard enough, he's afraid of challenges, and just seems to lack commitment in everything he does.

I wouldn't say so. Hasn't even scored against the sub-par opposition we've been playing.

I don't think koeman will stand for poor performance like his predecessor did when it's in games that matter.

Is there anyone worried about Klop rotating, and changing between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1?

Is Sturridge nailed on, or Origi will be first choice? Is Firmino safe now with Wijnaldum in the mix both for CM in 4-3-3 and No. 10 role in 4-2-3-1? How about Moreno, will he be first choice LB, or Milner?

I think the safest route in Liverpool attack are Coutinho and Mane.

Can be avoided for now I would say. Coutinho is nicely priced though. One for the wildcard I reckon.

I see a lot of people have Firmino in their teams/drafts.

    Forster
    Walker - Souare - Shaw
    Mahrez - Lamela - Townsend - Sigurdsson
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long
Subs: Jakupovic, Stones, Pieters and Höjbjerg.

What do you say of my team?

Strong, 3 risky midfielders. I'd rather have Tadic, Ayew and deul

New to this message board but not to FF

    Heaton (jak)

Walker Terry Stones ( Friend / Parades )

Ericsson Miki Nolito (Hojberg /Coqeulin )

    Kun Ibra Gray

Biggest concern is Nolito, untested plus with Kun bit much, want Hazard but can't squeeze a mil from anywhere. Stones @5 to city is good value, Terry will play and get points all over, ditch Walker but for who?

    Any feedback appreciated

Why so confident on Terry?I would downgrade a defender and use the money to upgrade a mid.

Maintaining captaincy, Conte's type of player, Chelsea will be solid? Switch out for who tho? Not many starters in solid teams with goal scoring ability for value.

He was rotated quite a bit last year and now he's another year older.
          Maybe switch to Morgan.

Van Dijk & Ake or Gabriel & Stones to complete my squad?

    Hazard / KDB / Fabregas / Ayew / Phillips

Have we got any further development on the illusive 4M defender.

I would welcome any suggestions that look likely to get a place early because of injuries. The names being floated around at this price point seem to include: Amat, Fry, Lenihan, Smith etc.

    Thoughts appreciated.
