A huge name in US Fantasy Sports, FanDuel arrives on these shores with a game built specifically for a UK audience.

The game has been created from the ground up over the past 18 months, at times involving members of the Fantasy Football Scout community, who were part of a beta test during Euro 16.

FanDuel has launched today and we’re very proud to announce that we’ll be supporting the game throughout the new season, running tips and weekly articles to help guide those of you who get involved.

FanDuel will be hosting custom Fantasy Football Scout contests, including free entry options, and will also be devising tournaments over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.

What is FanDuel?

FanDuel should sit perfectly with the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The concept will be very familiar – you have £100 million to build a team of 11 players and you can enter this selection in as many of the available contests as you choose. You can, of course, create multiple teams and enter numerous contests to increase your chances of winning.

The player prices change week-to-week based on player performance and, as with many of these games, there’s real appeal in attempting to exploit value options within the player list.

That’s certainly what we’ll be trying to help you achieve with our Weekly Shop and dedicated FanDuel articles.

The contests allow you to tinker with your selection right up until kick-off, so if you’re able to monitor team sheets and react quickly to opportunities, these can sometimes offer an advantage.

For now squads for the Gameweek will be locked when the first match gets underway.

This single-deadline rule is soon to be addressed, though. Typically, squads will be locked as the kick-offs go by, so your players involved in the early fixture will be locked first, allowing you to continue to swap out the players in your starting XI who are due to play later.

There are various contest formats to enter and, while those with higher entry fees will typically offer the bigger prizes, there will be large pots available for the smaller entry fee contests, depending on the number of entrants.

Each week, there will always be at least one free entry contest for those looking to get involved.

Why Should I Play?

FanDuel ignored the option of importing their US game mechanics and instead invested in building something new and fresh.

Not only does this mean that the game is tailored to us as Fantasy Football managers, it also ensures that every player starts from scratch.

FanDuel begins as a level playing field.

You won’t be up against veteran players armed with proven methods and complex spreadsheets – even those who have played Daily Fantasy Sports for years will come into this game with little or no experience of the scoring.

That means that the Fantasy Football Scout community and other experienced Fantasy Football managers have the opportunity to become established and successful FanDuel players.

When you delve into the scoring system, you’ll see that it sits well with us all.

FanDuel use a rich variety of match actions, all devised from Opta data, to power their scoring.

Uniquely, clean sheets are only a scoring factor for goalkeepers.

Instead, all players are rewarded for tackles, clearances, blocks and interceptions. Those scoring methods obviously favour defenders, whilst ball-winning midfielders also come to the fore – a rarity for Fantasy Football.

Of course, our Members have access to a five-year archive of all the key data and we’ve already created custom tables to help FanDuel players with selection.

You can view the full FanDuel scoring matrix here.

Our short experience in the Beta over the summer told us that it’s a very well balanced scoring system; there is no single dominating statistic and FanDuel have reacted to feedback to tweak the scoring for the final release.

The game will have you considering players that you’ve never looked at before, building teams that look very different to traditional Fantasy Football lineups. That can only be a good thing.

How Do I Start?

You can register for a free account via this link.

When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash

After that, you can begin creating your first lineup and then choose to enter any of the opening weekend’s contests.

There’s a free-for-all contest available in the lobby and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout contest that offers a total of £200 in prizes.

This costs just £1 to enter and is available for 230 entrants – the top 57 places will collect at least £2, with the winner earning £25 and runner-up collecting £15.

This week and on several occasions over the season we’ll be offering special contest options.

Look out for our full strategy guide to the game next week and also our regular Weekly Shop and FanDuel Focus articles over the course of the season.

Wow 3-0 win for Dundalk against BATE tonight in the CL qualifiers....

Guaranteed something like €5,500,000 alone now.

Fantastic for them, but sadly there will be no title challenge from any other Irish club for years to come 🙁

Hopefully it has some positive impact on Irish football as a whole though

Pleased for them, but I guess I'm not alone in not knowing they were even playing today? Not sure where the positive impact will come from as I assume most Irish fans were already on it?

Some say it will have a trickle down effect to other clubs as time goes on.

Some say Dundalk will use it each year to maintain their position. Doesn't take a lot of money to win a league here, considering the prize for winning the league is about €60,000-€75,000.

The last theory, which I'm inclined to believe is that a lot will go to Mr. Sponge Delaney and never see a penny go back into youth programmes or the league 😕

Delaney is some tit. How he came into and still maintains being the head of the FAI I will never know. He is the most inarticulate man going.

      Chrisht above.

Weren't Dundalk on the verge of disappearing about 5 years ago and a load of fans had to start a fund to save the club?

      Fair play.

Stephen Kenny is a magician, he took us (Derry) on one hell of a European adventure a fair few moons ago.

It's took Pauleta of PSG to put us out in the end if I remember correctly.

    Mahrez Haz Deulofeu Tadic
    Luk Kun Gray

    Bench
    Valdez mcauley Fernandez fletch

I'm hoping to get away with this team for atleast 3 weeks.

    RMF8 (Rate my Front 8)

Messing around with the front 8. Weak point is bench fodder Fletcher but if he can get me 2 points and the odd cleansheet he does what I need him to do.

    Hazard / Eriksen / Siggy / Ibe / Fletcher
    Kun / Ibrahimovic / Gray

    Defence is:
    Heaton / Foster
    Terry / Stones / Williams / Friend / Smith

      Nice team.

My 2 pence worth would be that if Williams leaves Swansea, Jordi Amat (4m) will be first choice to start alongside Fernandez, and not Van der Hoorn as some suspect. So I would go for Amat if Williams leaves, and decide between Williams and Funes Mori if he goes to Everton

Doing a bit of a VORP experiment and trying to look ahead with my plans instead of my usual thinking in articles past which has always looked to the past season to measure value.

Taking a look at RMT in the members area gave me an idea. Figuring that this is the minimum anyone would want to spend on the fifteen spots in our squad:

    4.5/4.0
    4.5/4.5/4.5/4.5/4.0
    6.0/6.0/5.5/5.5/4.5
    6.5/6.5/6.0

Leaving us 23M to spend on upgrades. Value Over these minimum Replacement Players is the challenge we all face when improving our squads with the money we have left. One way to look at the value of improvements when adding new players is points, points per game, or some other assessment of their previous season.

But what if you put a face to a VORP template and looked at projections for a squad of fifteen actual bare minimum players? I plugged the following motley squad of ubers into RMT to find out what our baseline might look like:
    Foster/Jakupovic
    Friend Mee Evans Kone Bruce
    Bolasie Redmond Fischer Phillips
    Wilson Gray Wickham

Now I hope I'm not giving away trade secrets when I say that this crew got a six week score of under 43 points per week that would probably force early wild cards, rage quits, and horrible whinging on this forum.

I know this is proprietary stuff so I would encourage members to use the above score as a baseline when trying to estimate VORP for the future, but everyone should be able to use the above template of actual players to figure out what the rewards, costs, and sacrifices need to be when finding value with our excess 23M to spend.

Wow so much hate from people that so obviously let their FPL experiences decide their judgement on Lukaku

The guy has just gone 23 and has averaged 15 goals a season over the last 4 seasons.

2012-13 - scored 17 in a Steve Clarke managed West Brom side.
2013-16 - scored 43 for a Roberto Martinez who was like a cancer on Everton since day one.

Yes he is inconsistent in the sense he might score a few goals then go on a dry streak, but over a season he is extremely consistent for those 15-17 goals in bang average sides.

You can only imagine how much he will improve under Koeman, or if he makes the move to Chelsea, I can see 20 goals at least under the circumstances of the club (no Europe, top class players, etc.).

Put it this way, even if we take Lukaku's last 4 seasons and continue the 15-goal average trend for the next 8 years (until he is 31) that puts him on 180 Premier League goals.

Oh btw that would be the 4th highest PL goalscorer ever in its history, only bested by Andy Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (193) and Alan Shearer (260).

That's assuming he doesn't improve and stays on his current level.....

    But he's crap right? 🙄

He's not crap, he's just not great. He lacks technique, more importantly, he has that clumsy technique that can't really be improved. You talk about him as a 23 years old, but fail to mention he's been playing regularly since 16.

Personally, i think he'd struggle at Chelsea, he won't get as much space.

      My tuppence..

Who has he scored the Premier League goals for by all large? Everton and previously WBA.

Step up in class then. With less space to work in maybe 10 yards less space. Your movement needs to be great, your touch needs to be great your finishing needs to be great. Maybe explains why he can look quite ineffective for Belgium.

I think he's a bit if a cart horse personally who can be hit and miss and when he's having a bad game everything goes wrong and he can't shake it off. Usually gets the hook.

When he's on fire he looks unplayable all the same.

Fellaini under Moyes at Everton was fantastic

Never got played in the same way at United, often pushed back to CM where he's effectively useless for goals.

LVG used him in the hole quite a bit when they were struggling and he delivered a good few times if memory serves me correct

Agree with this. A players prime is not often until 25+ so plenty of opportunity to improve with a good 10 years still ahead of him. Obviously by no means the finished article but he is a great striker already. Similar to the old Wayne Rooney in terms of having purple patches thoughout the season but when als said and done he already scores a decent goal amount per season.

Point is, where is the progression? Lukaku is a good player and a talented young man with plenty of attributes to make it big, but how far has he come over these seasons? You yourself point it out, under Steve Clarke at West Brom he netted 17 goals. Has he improved much? Not really. That where I base my judgement on him compared to say someone like Batshuayi who I have watched improve every season.

When he has one of those rare games where he fully unleashes his talent, we all know how good he is. A big issue though is those are few and far between, and often he simply disappears in matches.

      1. Bøwstring The Carp

He just hit 18 goals with Everton in the season gone by

Not to mention as I said an Everton that was going stagnant the last 2 seasons under Martinez' tactics.

As I said if we assume he doesn't improve and maintains this level, he will still be the 4th highest PL scorer of all time by the age of 31.

You can only assume with a move to Chelsea/ United (with better suppliers and more goals being scored on a whole) or a better manager and tactics (such as Koeman) that he will improve.

By how much is the question, but he is 23. Not even near his prime, he has another 3/4 years of fine tuning those problems that will get better with experience imo

I have him in my opening team but his goal record in France is a little deceptive, that league might as well be the SPL and PSG were so much better than everyone else.

Giroud scored a lot of goals for Montpellier when they won the league, came to England and got found out for his lack of pace, Zlatan is slowing down, if you watched the Euros you would have seen, I just get the impression he may find it harder than most think, how many 34 year old have dominated this league? Can't think of many if any.

We are lucky in that a lot of the GW1 strikers have tricky starts or might not even start due to coming back to training late so it doesn't hurt to try him out in these first two or three games but you will have to be ruthless if he don't hit the ground running or it will be Hazard from last year all over again.

The big bonus is that if he has an absolute stinker V Bournemouth (which won't be an easy game, they beat them in that last year) then he's an easy switch to Kane for GW2.

That midfield just isn't good enough.

I only like the 9.5 mids and above or the 7.5 and below though.

I understand what you mean, I'm finding the same with the forwards.

Are you not liking Alli, Eriksen, Firmino, Coutinho etc

I like Firminio and Mane but not early on and i want to see if theres rotation.

Alli and Eriksen im not sold on due to how Spurs finished the season and how slow they started the last.

Eriksen has always trolle dme when i have had him but may be convinced on Alli i guess

I love the Liverpool midfield picks and feel they are fairly nailed. Mane is my pick of the bunch.

I think they could shine against stronger opposition.

That's a full 1.5 more than me in defense. I think you should cut about 1 million off it.

I would if i liked any upgrade i could get on the mids. Think i either need more off or stay the same if you know what i mean. Maybe someone can convince me on the 8.5 mids...

Like that team a lot. Think Rooney could be better value than Ibrahimavic but can see why you want him

Have toyed with that and then a cheaper defence in order to buff one mid to a 9.5 but not sure its worth it if you know what i mean.

Just trying to work out some correlations between age and potential. So to avoid my bias can I get some suggestions on players in the premier leageu who have played for a reasonable time period. Some that started young and some that finish older would be great.

I am trying to be vague to get a reasonably random sample. Just name a few players who have had reasonably long careers.

If I can show something useful I will let you all know. I want it to include some players who started young and some who finished relatively old. Not goalkeepers

Good man. I am trying to see what the pattern is between age and potential.

There is a second part as well if I find this proves fruitful at all
