A huge name in US Fantasy Sports, FanDuel arrives on these shores with a game built specifically for a UK audience.

The game has been created from the ground up over the past 18 months, at times involving members of the Fantasy Football Scout community, who were part of a beta test during Euro 16.

FanDuel has launched today and we’re very proud to announce that we’ll be supporting the game throughout the new season, running tips and weekly articles to help guide those of you who get involved.

FanDuel will be hosting custom Fantasy Football Scout contests, including free entry options, and will also be devising tournaments over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.

What is FanDuel?

FanDuel should sit perfectly with the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The concept will be very familiar – you have £100 million to build a team of 11 players and you can enter this selection in as many of the available contests as you choose. You can, of course, create multiple teams and enter numerous contests to increase your chances of winning.

The player prices change week-to-week based on player performance and, as with many of these games, there’s real appeal in attempting to exploit value options within the player list.

That’s certainly what we’ll be trying to help you achieve with our Weekly Shop and dedicated FanDuel articles.

The contests allow you to tinker with your selection right up until kick-off, so if you’re able to monitor team sheets and react quickly to opportunities, these can sometimes offer an advantage.

For now squads for the Gameweek will be locked when the first match gets underway.

This single-deadline rule is soon to be addressed, though. Typically, squads will be locked as the kick-offs go by, so your players involved in the early fixture will be locked first, allowing you to continue to swap out the players in your starting XI who are due to play later.

There are various contest formats to enter and, while those with higher entry fees will typically offer the bigger prizes, there will be large pots available for the smaller entry fee contests, depending on the number of entrants.

Each week, there will always be at least one free entry contest for those looking to get involved.

Why Should I Play?

FanDuel ignored the option of importing their US game mechanics and instead invested in building something new and fresh.

Not only does this mean that the game is tailored to us as Fantasy Football managers, it also ensures that every player starts from scratch.

FanDuel begins as a level playing field.

You won’t be up against veteran players armed with proven methods and complex spreadsheets – even those who have played Daily Fantasy Sports for years will come into this game with little or no experience of the scoring.

That means that the Fantasy Football Scout community and other experienced Fantasy Football managers have the opportunity to become established and successful FanDuel players.

When you delve into the scoring system, you’ll see that it sits well with us all.

FanDuel use a rich variety of match actions, all devised from Opta data, to power their scoring.

Uniquely, clean sheets are only a scoring factor for goalkeepers.

Instead, all players are rewarded for tackles, clearances, blocks and interceptions. Those scoring methods obviously favour defenders, whilst ball-winning midfielders also come to the fore – a rarity for Fantasy Football.

Of course, our Members have access to a five-year archive of all the key data and we’ve already created custom tables to help FanDuel players with selection.

You can view the full FanDuel scoring matrix here.

Our short experience in the Beta over the summer told us that it’s a very well balanced scoring system; there is no single dominating statistic and FanDuel have reacted to feedback to tweak the scoring for the final release.

The game will have you considering players that you’ve never looked at before, building teams that look very different to traditional Fantasy Football lineups. That can only be a good thing.

How Do I Start?

You can register for a free account via this link.

When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash

After that, you can begin creating your first lineup and then choose to enter any of the opening weekend’s contests.

There’s a free-for-all contest available in the lobby and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout contest that offers a total of £200 in prizes.

This costs just £1 to enter and is available for 230 entrants – the top 57 places will collect at least £2, with the winner earning £25 and runner-up collecting £15.

This week and on several occasions over the season we’ll be offering special contest options.

Look out for our full strategy guide to the game next week and also our regular Weekly Shop and FanDuel Focus articles over the course of the season.

Out of curiosity I was wondering if Alex Pritchard's price would remain fixed at 4.5 all season with 0.0% current ownership and him being transferred out of the league? If so I suppose a cynical approach might be to keep him in the squad until wild card time, put a 4.2 player in and suddenly you've got 0.3 extra to play with.

I'm not committing to testing this myself as you'd need to be pretty confident in being able to cope with a 14 man squad all season, but then I'm so unconvinced about any of the 4.5 mids that I may well take a 4 point hit if it appears that Hojbjerg or whomever might actually have to play so ...

This makes no sense to me. Why not just get a 4.5m player who plays instead?

      1. Ricochet
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Because none of them are any good! I have no intention of ever playing my 4.5 mid and this might at least raise some extra money to spend on good players down the line

Capoue is very good actually. He has a forward role in a 3-5-2 system, scored 2 in pre-season already.

He has 1 goal & 1 assist in last three seasons! He may do slightly better this year but again if it came down to a situation where he'd have to play I think I'd be spending the 4 points

In a 4.5m mid, you're looking at a couple of goals/assists a season, but he cartainly has potential to score some. Most of the time he's on your bench anyway.

My strategy has always been pick the lowest owned, nailed 4.5m defender.

If he gets 2 points every week fine, that's more than 0 and I won't lose any money. He will rarely play, as I try to keep a transfer banked to react quickly to injuries.

I'm not sure I follow either. You'd have 4.5 to spend on your WC either way?

Not if the player depreciates in value like 90% of 4.5 mids did last season

Ah I see. I'd rather have a 4.5 mid I can call upon if needed; Capoue and Leko look likely options.

    Evening all!

Today I'm wondering about Gabriel. If he's nailed, 5.0m Arsenal option seems too good to turn down.. Yes?

My other question is about 4.0m defenders. Anyone seem likely? Lenihan?

    Cheers!

Arsenal have bad opening fixtures...I wouldn't be interested anyway.

He is nailed if a new defender isn't signed. As an Arsenal fan and a fantasy player, either Arsenal get a new CB or we have a nailed 5.0m defender from a top club, but both is too good to be true.

    Kun Ibra (Diomande)

I think Mahrez is overpriced but that's not the majority opinion.

I think downgrade someone to 4.5m in midfield. That's how I always have success.

Will B. Smith start? Honest question I have no idea.

Naylor looks worse if Williams leaves. Keep an eye on that 🙂

      quite similar to mine (above)-

your 442 gives Azpi / Ibra

my 352 giving Firm / Bats

I would normally avoid 442, but set of players are pretty good.

Thoughts on this team? Thinking about an early WC. Only concern is the two 4m defenders, but I'm not a fan of rotation and given that I'll WC after GW3 I don't think it's such a big problem. Can't see a downgrade elsewhere being worth it either.

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Terry - Shaw - Friend - Lenihan - Wilson
    Hazard - KDB - Mahrez - Ayew - Fletcher
    Aguero - Austin - Gray

I don't like the strategy of planning for an early WC, I much prefer setting up a team I suspect will succeed early and then seeing what happens.

The strategy is a given for me, every season I seem to go for it. Might as well plan only for a short time span this time. We also have lots of proven FPL players rested for the first GW(s), more transfers and most importantly imo the ability to see how each team starts and who are the really must haves this season.

Much different from my team but I can't really take issue with many of your picks.

Your team isn't set up as I would have it (I think you're overpaying in some areas and under-spending in others), but not bad, really.

Eh, I'm not a Townsend fan. Deulofeu is quality but hard to find an extra 1.0 and not sure he's nailed on, Koeman didn't play Tadic as much as I'd have liked the last two seasons so may be an indicator plus Everton have £££ so may yet sign a new wide player

  15. Punter

    Foster
    Walker - Friend - Williams - Pieters
    Hazard - Martial - Ayew
    Aguero - Gray - Vardy

    Jak - Kouyate - Evans - Fletcher £1.0itb

    Plan is:
After GW1 swap Vardy (ARS) for Kane (CRY)
After GW2 swap Ayew (fixtures turn for the worse) for Tadic (SUN, ars, SWA) or Barkley/Deulofeu (STK, sun, MID, bou)
After GW3 swap Williams for Gabriel (wat, SOT,hul)

Defence can hold it's own for first 5 or 6 weeks, never play Jakupovic, never play Fletcher (although his fixtures aren't bad). Can keep an eye on the likes of Mahrez, Ibra, Sanchez, Alli, Payet etc and have some flexibility to swap out Kane, Hazard, Martial if not performing.

    (This plan assumes no injuries)

With player price rises so crucial in the opening games of the season, finding the Mahrez, a budget / mid price forward player could prove to have a big day in how high your ranking is come the end of the season! I have my team nailed for GWK 1 barring any injuries - based on first 6 fixtures

    Heaton
    Friend/Shaw/Otamendi
    Alli/Mhik/Ayew/Puncheon
    Zlatan/Kun/Negredo

    Subs; Foster/Evans/Fletcher/Wilson

    All suggestions welcome.

Nice to see Hazard and de Bruyne. Watch out on Ivanovic, Azpi/Terry better picks. Downgrade Ibe to a 4.5m mid and upgrade Townsend to Siggy/Tadic using the funds 🙂 Could even do Ivan > Terry as well so you can get Firmino in for Townsend.

Dunno...I'm not convinced he will. It's been so long since Rooney played up high that I suspect we've forgotten that he's actually a good goalscorer.

You have to go back to before RVP since he last played their week in and week out.

"It's been so long since Rooney played up high that I suspect we've forgotten that he's actually a good goalscorer."

He played it more than a few times under LVG, and despite LVG's terrible negative tactics, he can't make a player trap the ball better or play a better or quicker 5 yard pass..

He was better when he had a stronger forward alongside him. Part of his problem is he has been trying to carry the team and it really has not worked

You should try, I think Jose is setting Rooney up to fail. Jose won't play a 2-striker formation and Rooney doesn't have the touch or short-passing consistency to effectively play in the hole. He has basically restricted Rooney to two positions, one of which is already occupied by the easily better Ibrahimovic and the likely better Rashford and another that he struggles at naturally so that he can be dropped on merit and try to avoid a sh* storm in the media.

He keeps ending up in all my drafts. He fits in that 2nd striker, awkward price range spot and the team structure just looks so more balanced. He also provides United attacking cover, I know people say coverage is a myth but as you say he playing forward and surrounded by pure class.

It's just a matter of having the faith that he can rekindle old glories...or maybe not....

I'm quite prepared to gamble he can produce good pts with that fwd line up.

I learnt my lesson last season 🙁

I let exactly that "past glories" cloud my judgment. And I would love it if he rekindled them as a United fan, but I'm not willing to take a punt on him again as an FPL asset.

So tempted by all these mid budget midfielders. Too many to choose from and is it worth investing more or taking the punt?

            Routledge or Ayew
            Redmond or Tadic

            Oxlade-Chamberlain
            Deulofeu
            Townsend

Wouldn't go near Routledge tbh. Redmond could be a great pick.

From that list, I'd only consider Gradel and Deulofeu. Deulofeu the best pick from the lot though imo.

Routledge pre-season hard to ignore though, Ayew was my first pick, but Routledge frees up a lot of cash and puts him in 5th Mid role.
Puel comments on Redmond sparks interest, I like Tadic.

Deulofeu impressed last season and strong pre-season.
Capue at 4.5 could be fantastic if pre-season is anything to go on.
