A huge name in US Fantasy Sports, FanDuel arrives on these shores with a game built specifically for a UK audience.

The game has been created from the ground up over the past 18 months, at times involving members of the Fantasy Football Scout community, who were part of a beta test during Euro 16.

FanDuel has launched today and we’re very proud to announce that we’ll be supporting the game throughout the new season, running tips and weekly articles to help guide those of you who get involved.

FanDuel will be hosting custom Fantasy Football Scout contests, including free entry options, and will also be devising tournaments over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.

What is FanDuel?

FanDuel should sit perfectly with the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The concept will be very familiar – you have £100 million to build a team of 11 players and you can enter this selection in as many of the available contests as you choose. You can, of course, create multiple teams and enter numerous contests to increase your chances of winning.

The player prices change week-to-week based on player performance and, as with many of these games, there’s real appeal in attempting to exploit value options within the player list.

That’s certainly what we’ll be trying to help you achieve with our Weekly Shop and dedicated FanDuel articles.

The contests allow you to tinker with your selection right up until kick-off, so if you’re able to monitor team sheets and react quickly to opportunities, these can sometimes offer an advantage.

For now squads for the Gameweek will be locked when the first match gets underway.

This single-deadline rule is soon to be addressed, though. Typically, squads will be locked as the kick-offs go by, so your players involved in the early fixture will be locked first, allowing you to continue to swap out the players in your starting XI who are due to play later.

There are various contest formats to enter and, while those with higher entry fees will typically offer the bigger prizes, there will be large pots available for the smaller entry fee contests, depending on the number of entrants.

Each week, there will always be at least one free entry contest for those looking to get involved.

Why Should I Play?

FanDuel ignored the option of importing their US game mechanics and instead invested in building something new and fresh.

Not only does this mean that the game is tailored to us as Fantasy Football managers, it also ensures that every player starts from scratch.

FanDuel begins as a level playing field.

You won’t be up against veteran players armed with proven methods and complex spreadsheets – even those who have played Daily Fantasy Sports for years will come into this game with little or no experience of the scoring.

That means that the Fantasy Football Scout community and other experienced Fantasy Football managers have the opportunity to become established and successful FanDuel players.

When you delve into the scoring system, you’ll see that it sits well with us all.

FanDuel use a rich variety of match actions, all devised from Opta data, to power their scoring.

Uniquely, clean sheets are only a scoring factor for goalkeepers.

Instead, all players are rewarded for tackles, clearances, blocks and interceptions. Those scoring methods obviously favour defenders, whilst ball-winning midfielders also come to the fore – a rarity for Fantasy Football.

Of course, our Members have access to a five-year archive of all the key data and we’ve already created custom tables to help FanDuel players with selection.

You can view the full FanDuel scoring matrix here.

Our short experience in the Beta over the summer told us that it’s a very well balanced scoring system; there is no single dominating statistic and FanDuel have reacted to feedback to tweak the scoring for the final release.

The game will have you considering players that you’ve never looked at before, building teams that look very different to traditional Fantasy Football lineups. That can only be a good thing.

How Do I Start?

You can register for a free account via this link.

When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash

After that, you can begin creating your first lineup and then choose to enter any of the opening weekend’s contests.

There’s a free-for-all contest available in the lobby and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout contest that offers a total of £200 in prizes.

This costs just £1 to enter and is available for 230 entrants – the top 57 places will collect at least £2, with the winner earning £25 and runner-up collecting £15.

This week and on several occasions over the season we’ll be offering special contest options.

Look out for our full strategy guide to the game next week and also our regular Weekly Shop and FanDuel Focus articles over the course of the season.

I have 7 left for the final spot in my team(already have Del boy).
    should I go for:

    A) Lamela (3-5-2)
    B)Gray/6.5 (3-4-3)

If B then I can also downgrade one of my 4.5 keepers to a 4 and then upgrade firmino to mahrez.

I think Bojan is going under the radar. I know he gets injured a lot, but when he plays, he gets points. Look at his points to minutes ratio last season. Rivals the top scoring midfiielders. I fancy Stoke to do well this season. Oh, and he is on pens

If (and it is an if) he can stay fit for a run of GWs he could be great value if he plays off the main striker.

If Lukakaaaaa joins Chelsea (Seems likely) would you get him in for 9m from the off given their fixtures?

For me this would mean ditching Zlatan & hazard (more than likely), allowing a United MF (Mikhy or Martial) and the ability to spread about £2.5m around the rest of the team.

    Any thoughts peeps?

I think he's one of these players who needs to feel loved, and be the main man.

Big Price tag, and returning to his old club would mean he has a point to prove - I am a fan anyway (you know this) but I feel he could really be EXPLOSIVE from the off.

        Don't you think he'll start GW1?

Surely he must be back in training now, Belgium got knocked out of the Euros well early 😉

Would he be nailed on? Would be worried about him rotating with Bats and Costa.

If anything, Delboy would be 100% in my team.

Ditching Hazard would be tempting but it's really about whether you need that extra 2.5mil which I don't think I do.

Martial is an interesting choice, like it. Not sure WBA will score many goals so not sure on Rondon. Not massively convinced by Funes Mori and Terry but they play for teams that could keep a lot of clean sheets this year so their inclusion makes sense. Otherwise v.nice. 8/10.

The midfield looks great but doesn't justify a 4.5m forward. You'll still need a playing 3rd forward.

Sorry that is poor for no ibra or kun and still having a 4.0 def and 4.5 fwd. Zero flexibility up front at those prices, everton def double up is way too risky for this early on, valencia is borderline. Honestly Martial and deulofeu are both punts also. If you go without Ibra and Kun that midfield has to be a lock.

Originally posted to this effect about 3 hours ago, but here's a summary of something to consider if now is a different crowd:

I have a theory that a four or five man back line and low midfield investment is the strongest way to start the season. Not all season; just the first few rounds. The theory goes that new players take time to gel in attack, whereas defenders are fulfilling more disciplined, less creative/interactive roles. While midfielders and forwards might take a few weeks to form an understanding, either after a transfer or long break, defensive understandings form more quickly (or less slowly). That's the idea, at least.

To test it I've taken the last four years worth of games and run them into tables, breaking down games into 38 blocks of 10 to simulate rounds, and totting up the distribution of teams scoring zero, one, or more than one goals. Here's the data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XYrJE0nZAcbk49rQewUUF1FRjFgdUQA_2qJ7yN2WUbM/edit?usp=sharing

Having done so, my conclusion is that, on average, teams will get more clean sheets in the first four weeks than in the season overall; and much fewer in weeks 5-8.

    2015/16
    Season Ave: 0.2828947368
    GW1-4: 0.325
    GW5-8 0.225

    2014/15
    Season Ave: 0.2947368421
    GW1-4: 0.3
    GW5-8 0.2375

    2013/14
    Season Ave: 0.3052631579
    GW1-4: 0.4
    GW5-8 0.225

    2012/13
    Season Ave: 0.2635964912
    GW1-4: 0.3041666667
    GW5-8 0.1625

It isn't conclusive, but I'm certainly considering applying this revelation by starting the season with five playing defenders and a couple of big hitters and concentrating on digging out the budget and midprice midfield potential as it emerges over the first few weeks.

    Thoughts?

It varies, but from about gw12 things improve, then are more sustained around 20-24 (assume tiredness and rotation during or after christmas?). Unsurprisingly 27-28 is an absolute crapshoot.

I think it shows a pretty modest effect really, most seasons you're talking a couple of percentiles increased incidence of clean sheets. In the grand scheme of things it's much more important to hit the right attacking players early, both in terms of points returns and in saving on transfers and lost team value.

      1. Sparrer
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Right. I currently have four players at 4.5m in my 7 defensive slots - I absolutely endorse going for the attacking players early. What I guess I'm looking at that's different is benching midfield punts in favour of starting defenders while the teams settle - without knowing who the 'right' players are I'll take those couple of percentile points.

Interestingly those results, translated into PPG (assuming 6 for a CS/60 mins, 2 when 1 goal conceded, 1 when 2+ conceded), tell a slightly different story:

        2015/16
        Season Ave: 2.74
        GW1-4: 2.90
        GW5-8 2.43

        2014/15
        Season Ave: 2.81
        GW1-4: 2.78
        GW5-8 2.45

        2013/14
        Season Ave: 2.83
        GW1-4: 3.34
        GW5-8 2.475

        2012/13
        Season Ave: 2.64
        GW1-4: 2.76
        GW5-8 2.21

Bear in mind though, those are averages - I'm suggesting I might pick defenders with good fixtures early who can become fodder or rotation options later.

      • 15 Years

Does this also mean that the cheaper 4.5m defenders have a slightly increased chance of matching a 6m midfielder (with a CS)? If the attacking players are still taking time to gel, the likes of Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom, Middlesbrough could all provide great value at 4.5m, allowing you to try to get the right attacking players / bandwagons in with flexibility.. Not sure if your analysis is just limited to expensive defenders, if anything it makes them look more overpriced if CSs are more regularly spread out among teams at the start.

This is what I'm looking at - rather than looking at my 4.5s as fodder, can I make them work as starters over gambling on untested mids. Currently I'm looking at a couple of steady defenders in the 5.5 slot and handing starting slots to players like foster and fernandez where fixtures look reasonable.

Talk to me about why people like Townsend. I agree he's ideal for fantasy because he's greedy & Palace have nice opening fixtures. However he's gone from Newcastle who were an attacking minded team to Palace who aren't & Pardew has stated he wants to focus on his defense this year. Townsend also had great attacking players around him at Newcastle whereas at Palace he doesn't. For my money Everton's duo of Miralles & Deulofeu are better options who do play for a much better attacking team.

I'm actually looking at 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 to start the season, playing my 4.5 defenders while I look for the value mids to come through. Certainly that way I can afford a few of the mid price options and move sideways price wise when a standout option comes through. See above for why budget defenders are probably better for your opening 11 than budget mids or mid price forwards.

I'd put him at 4 at best.. 😛

I'd prefer one of Ibra, Martial, Mkhit, but Rooney is cheaper so it depends how ya spend the money elsewhere.

Yes, price is the only factor for looking him over ibra. Gives the team more balance.

Cheap price to pay for a natural goalscorer.

    ____ - ____
    Azpilicueta - Shaw - 5.0 - McAuley - 4.0
    Hazard - ____ - Tadic - Fischer - Capoue
    Aguero - ____ - Gray

which combination would you rather have?

    (A) Courtois - Jakupovic
    Mkhitaryan
    Lukaku

    (B) Heaton - Foster
    Barkley
    Ibrahimovic

    ??

I would say B, although not personally a fan of Barkley

This. B without Barkley. Maybe downgrade to Deulofeu and upgrade Tadic to Eriksen?

Defoe surely a good option. 15 goals last season is a struggling Sunderland side. Proven goalscorer.

    Hi, all.

It has been 3 days since I made any changes to my team, so it is maybe nearing its final shape. 

    Heaton / Foster
    Valencia / Shaw / Terry / Paredes / Amat
    KdB / Hazard / Routledge / Barkley / Barry
    Aguero / Rooney / Gray

I have 0.5 in the bank.

    Some notes:
I am monitoring closely the situation with Stones. If City get him I will definitely swap him for Terry and upgrade to a 4.5 defender.

Same goes for Lukaku. If Chelsea resign him I will get Deulofeu instead of Barkley and use all of the remaining money for upgrading my third striker.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dislike Rooney. Even if Lukaku doesn't go swap Barkley for Deulofeu. Amat and Paredes not nailed. Double up on MUFC in defence? nice team tho.

MUFC were the team with the most clean sheets during the last season. Mou will only further improve us defensively => The double up on MUFC deface.

Fair enough for the two 4.0 defenders. I will probably upgrade one of them to a 4.5m defender. 😛

If I can't decide between three similarly priced players, should I go for

    A) the most expensive to be able to downgrade easily (Deulofeu)
    B) the one with the best GW1 fixture (Redmond)
    C) the one I think represents the best value (Gradel)

or try get two of them in by downgrading elsewhere? This would be for my 4th mid spot..

The one who will a) score the most points and b) whose price allows you to get the other player (who, it turns, out will actually score more) in a straight swop 🙂
