Having already brought in Ilkay Gundogan, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Nolito in this transfer window, Man City’s summer recruitment drive under new boss Pep Guardiola continued on Tuesday with the signing of Schalke 04 attacker Leroy Sane for a reported £37 million.

The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Etihad, and speaking to the club’s official website about the move, said the opportunity to work with Guardiola was one of the key factors in making the move to Manchester:

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career. I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players. I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

The History

Sane spent his formative years at SG Wattenscheid 09 before joining Schalke at the age of nine. After a couple of seasons at Bayer Leverkusen he returned to Schalke’s academy as a 16-year-old, and would go on to make his Bundesliga debut for Die Konigsblauen against Stuttgart in April 2014.

The 2014/15 season saw Sane gain further first-team opportunities, scoring three goals and registering an assist in 13 league matches, while he netted on his Champions League debut in a last 16 tie at Real Madrid, which Schalke won 4-3.

Last season, Sane established himself as a regular starter, making 33 league appearances in total, scoring eight goals and racking up six assists.

Sane represented his country at Under 19 and Under 21 level, scoring nine goals in 17 matches, before making his senior debut as a substitute in a 2-0 friendly defeat to France last November. He was a member of Germany’s squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, but only made one appearance – playing 11 minutes as a substitute against hosts France.

The Prospects

While Guardiola was already able to call upon the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Nolito and Raheem Sterling for the attacking midfield positions, the Spaniard was quick to talk up Sane’s potential after concluding the deal to bring him to the Etihad:

“He has great technical ability, is comfortable on the ball and there is much to admire about the way he plays football. He is fast, enjoys creating chances for others, works hard for the team and scores goals, too. He also has a very positive attitude and will fit in well with our squad. At 20, he is still developing as a player but he is already a member of the German national side and I think he will be a fantastic asset to our club.”

If, as expected, Guardiola favours a 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-3-3 formation, Sane looks set to compete primarily with De Bruyne, Silva, Nolito and Sterling for a starting berth, with the latter’s playing time appearing the most at threat given Sane shares many of the same characteristics.

The German international is versatile enough to feature on either flank, in the number ten role or even as a false nine, although he played the majority of his football on the right wing last season. Sane’s arrival certainly means the likes of Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas now look surplus to requirements as the new manager makes him stamp on the final third.

Sane possesses explosive pace, and has strong technical ability, with dribbling, in particular, a major strength. His decision making in the final third should only improve with experience, although the physical nature of the Premier League could at first be a slight challenge for the 20-year-old, given his wiry physique.

The German’s underlying statistics from last season illustrate he isn’t much of a playmaker, only registering a key pass every 82.6 minutes, worse than De Bruyne (24.7), Silva (26.9), Nolito (41.2) and Sterling (55.1).

Sane’s goal threat was much more impressive, producing a goal attempt every 34 minutes, which was stronger than Sterling (37.1), De Bruyne (40.9) and Silva (62.1) last term, although fellow new arrival Nolito did lead the way, averaging a shot every 30.5 minutes for Celta Vigo.

It’s expected that Sane will be available for around 8.0 or 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), given Silva and Nolito have been handed 9.0 price tags and Sterling sets you back 8.0. The new boy should be classified as a midfielder, considering his appearances as a striker have been few and far between.

Given Sane’s relative inexperience at the highest level, there has to be question marks over whether he can immediately command a regular starting berth until he acclimatises to life in England. As was the case with Sterling’s arrival last summer, City look to have bought potential in the young German, and while his undoubted quality should see him impress at times this season, consistency could be an issue.

Sane’s acquisition merely strengthens Guardiola’s hand in attacking midfield and could lead to greater rotation over the campaign. This could allow the City boss a chance to manage Silva’s minutes – the Spaniard was limited to just 22 starts last term and continues to be hampered by hamstring and ankle concerns.

For now, De Bruyne remains our preferred option from the City midfield, then, but with the Belgian only returning to pre-season training this week following his Euro 2016 exertions, there’s perhaps a chance even he could be rotated during the opening three Gameweeks as he builds up his match fitness. City also face two Champions League qualifiers this month.

Looking at the schedule, City’s opening fixtures (SUN, sto, WHM, mun, BOU, swa) are generally pretty favourable, with the plum home fixtures against Sunderland and Bournemouth in particular offering the temptation to double up on their attack.

Although City’s midfield clearly has the potential to offer us at least one reliable big-hitter, with chopping and changing potentially on the cards, many may initially opt for Aguero alone in their opening 15-man squads until we get a better idea of the new manager’s intentions.

At present, there’s no shortage of in-form premium midfielders as alternatives, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez all amongst the goals in pre-season already.

    worth having such Front 8?

    Hazard - Lamela - Deulofeu - Redmond - Fischer
    Aguero - Ibra - Gray

    (Deulofeu could be Townsend
    Fischer could be Gradel)

or in general it's better to downgrade one of 5.5-6.5 mids in order to upgrade Lamela for example?

Last season I started with Ozil. He had under 10% ownership and I could only see a good season for him. After 5 GWs he had (i think) one assist and his fixtures were turning so I shipped. We all know what happened next ... he managed to rack up 19 assists and a few goals while I sat stubborn hoping that Hazard or Silva would do something.

I know myself that stubborness is my biggest weakness. What is yours? Is there anything which you have a habit of doing? How can we help each other this season?

Not boarding bandwagons early enough in the season thinking the players I have will come good. Team value has become a huge part of the game for me now more so with the second wildcard and bench boost chip.

Harry Kane (11.0m). 25 premier league goals and I still opt for Zlatan (11.5m) who is 34, debut season in premier league, played in mediocre Ligue 1 last season and didn't score in the Euros.

I really think Kane is the better pick but love the excitement of owning Zlat!

On the last Scoutcast last year there was a question about players you're looking to have GW1. My answer was looking at potential players who had been relegated who could be good value if a Prem team picked them up.

    The 2 mentioned? Amavi and......Redmond. It's fate. Super striker @ £6m!

    Fantasy Football Scout

Manchester United Revival - Key Questions That Need Answers

As a fantasy football manager I'm very excited about the prospect of Manchester United once again offering us some decent players to draft in.

With a new manager in place, new recruits and Rooney told to attack there is plenty to get excited about.

In tonight's friendly with Everton Mourinho has told his team to treat it like a Prem League match. The Community Shield should also be very competitive.

With that in mind what key questions are you looking for answers to regarding the Man Utd revival before you invest?

    Here's two of mine

    1. Can Ibrahimovic replicate his career long feats in the Premier League at the age of 34?

    2. Will Valencia nail down the right back berth and present an alternative to the more popular option of Shaw?

I'm calling BS on this, I feel it was Ali playing out position, which caused Kanes lack of productivity.

With Wanyama drafted in Ali won't be pulled further back and will be aloud the creative role behind Kane.

          I'm going Kane over Ibra

No, Rashford plays EL and C1C. 11 games before Xmas. That's plenty for a 18 year old.

Plus a few sub appearances of course. And Ibra could get injured.

Genuinely not at all convinced Ibra will be a success. Mourinho teams typically take a while to gel offensively which could result in quite a few edgy games. For me this has a touch of the Falcao situation about it. I think that very few people will still have him mid season and that the biggest problem won't just have been how expensive he was but that he took up space in people's forward lines that could by definition have gone to the best striker bar Aguero.

I don't need any evidence about United, this is Mourinho we are talking about and United are deservedly title favourites (or should be if they aren't).

Ibrahimovic is a sure thing to score plenty of goals if he stays injury free. Best striker United have had since Cantona. I'm less sure that he justifies 11.5m compared to Rooney 9m though.

Valencia isn't a "typical" Mourinho RB. But I don't think United will be a "typical" Mourinho team. He is cute enough to know the history of the club and to produce an attacking style of play, same as he did at RM. I would prefer Valencia to Shaw if I thought Valencia was nailed and as it stands I think he'll have the shirt at the start of the season.

I get the impression - and its only an impression - that Valencia is a good player who does what he's told and will try to be whatever Mourinho wants him to be. Hope so anyway.

Yes. Actually I think he is more capable of playing in a disciplined way than Darmian, plus he has excellent end product.

He's in my team right now and will probably stay there unless United sign Fabinho.

        100% this.

Rooney at 9m will probably represent good value, but I'm just glad Ibra is there to take my attention away from him. Can't believe people are doubting the big man yet paying a little less for Kane / Vardy..

Deservedly favs? All stats models I've seen have Utd in 5th at best.

Chelsea and City are by far the better options. I'll be placing as many Chelsea defenders and City attackers as possible.

You might want to revisit those "stats models" and make a decision on whether they are in the slightest bit reliable! I am not surprised that City are favourites (it's the pep factor) but United finishing 5th is silly. I don't know if we will win it or not, but based on our players and our manager, we should not be expected to finish 5th.

Zlatan is an absolute certainty in my team. I have to admit, after reading the FFS article on Martial I am very tempted to draft him too. One of Velencia and Shaw is very likely too.

will Mata be involved at all, I see him as a class differential at 7.5. I know Mourhino didn't like him at Chelsea, but on his day Mata can be an assist machine and with the better quality around him he could be a consistent point machine

From an FPL perspective, Rooney is the big question for me. Guaranteed to start, guaranteed to play in attack, probably a share of set pieces. If he hits form then he's a bargain at 9m. However, his form over the last few years has veered between patchy and woeful. Can Mourinho revive it?

Good morning, is Clichy the best pick from City def? Otamendi worth the add 0.5? Also pick one of the follow, please:

    A) Rooney + Mahrez + Redmond
    B) Ibra + Lamela + Tadic

Clichy has Kolarov around, so if you want a City centre back, Ota is currently the best option.

On the second part, it's your team. Pick who you want.

    Choose the better one.

    A. Courtois + Mandanda (Saves me 0.5 in defense as I'll get Azpi out and bring a 5.5 defender in)

    B. de Gea + Heaton

Courtois and Mandanda not starting GW1 worries me but A looks like the better choice.
