The Fantasy Football Scout Dugout FC League draft night is fast approaching.

For those who missed our introductory article, Dugout FC is a free to play, draft-based Fantasy game that allows you to join or create a custom league, made up of multiple divisions.

There’s full promotion and relegation between the divisions and the game itself is driven by an Opta-based scoring system so advanced, Dugout FC are convinced it’s one of the best around.

It’s not too late to sign up to take part in draft night, which takes place this Friday at 8pm UK time.

In addition to resetting our 69-division Fantasy Football Scout South league from last year, we have also created a brand new Fantasy Football Scout North league to meet demand for the upcoming campaign.

Tactics for Draft Night

Dugout FC’s draft system is classified as a “snake” draft.

The team with the first overall pick selects, followed by the team with the second pick, third pick, and so on. At the end of the first round, the team that just drafted (with the last pick in the first round) will have the first pick in the second round and the round continues in reverse order.

There are ten teams in a division with up to 18 players allowed in each squad, there will be 18 rounds of picks before each of the teams are complete.

During the draft, you’ll have two minutes to claim your pick before your shortlist kicks in and selects a player on your behalf.

Preparation for draft night is key and the first step, aside from forming your shortlist in Dugout FC, is to form a ranking sheet for the players on your list.

This will structure your targets in order of preference – the bigger your list, the more you’ll have to turn to on the night as the two minutes ticks down on your selection.

The obvious tactic is to work down your list, prioritising your high rank players, although there will be times when you’ll consider reacting to the selections of others, perhaps promoting a player in your ranking list or even bringing in a new player. Fundamentally, however, for at least the first three or four rounds, it’s a good idea to stick to your decided ranks in order to start your squad with a foundation of players that you have some confidence in. After that, you can consider taking risks.

Getting your first round pick right is crucial as there can be a large points gap between the player list’s handful of high performing players and the chasing pack.

In 2015/16 just five players breached the 200 points barrier, including Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, who were the game’s highest scorers and the standout midfield picks, finishing on 254 and 242 points respectively. The rest of this elite 200 point club were made up of three forwards, Harry Kane on 230 points, Sergio Aguero on 220 and Jamie Vardy on 204.

To put their points scoring feat into perspective the next highest placed midfielder was Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen on 197, while the next highest placed forward was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez on 188.

Player Versatility

Another notable feature of Dugout FC is the concept of player versatility. For example, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney can all be played either in midfield or as a forward.

You should take a note of such players as, securing an asset who can fulfil a number of roles offers flexibility and can help cover injuries.

Be aware though they will score differently depending on where they are fielded. Midfielders earn a point for a clean sheet but need to complete 40 passes per point, while forwards only need to complete 30.

The Scoring Model

Be sure to check in on Dugout FC’s scoring model to be clear on the match events at play and how these are applied, in particular, across the positions.

The scoring is finely balanced between full-backs and centre-backs but you’ll want to either target dominant defenders who win a raft of aerial balls, or forward-thinking full-backs who provide a ready supply of accurate crosses.

The criteria for midfielders is pretty clear – aside from goals and assists, those who make accurate passes, accompanied with chances created, should be high on your list of priorities.

However, given that there are points earned for fouls won, you should also factor in those players who frequently run at opponents and earn free kicks for their side. Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha topped last season’s fouls won table with 90, closely followed by Mahrez on 83 and Swansea’s attack minded midfielder Andre Ayew on 78.

Up front, it’s clearly all about goals and shots, although again, big centre forwards who also draw fouls offer some handy supplementary points. Harry Kane looks a good prospect in this regard having won 55 fouls last term as well as topping the goal attempt table.

Dugout FC’s player list offers a full rundown of last season’s points to offer guidance on your draft night priorities. This, combined with the statistics in our Members area, should help you form your ranking list ahead of tomorrow evening.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, if you’re yet to sign up, it’s not too late and here is a reminder of the link to join our newly created Fantasy Football Scout North league. This can also be found by scanning leagues.

Good luck to all on draft night.

Do we think there is a chance he could play further forward, instead of playing as a RB?

However, the attacking midfielder has stated that he is keen to play in his more natural position on the wing and has ambitions of being one of the best in the business in the more advanced role.

“I’m hoping I can be back in my right position because where I’ve played my whole life,” Antonio told FourFourTwo.

“I’ve never thought or dreamt that I could be played as a defender. Now, hopefully, I can turn myself into one of the best wingers in the Premier League.”

        Occasionally, yes.

But Slaven wants him at RB, so he'll predominately play there.

Even so, he may be worth a pick - his stats as a RB are very impressive - I think even better than as a winger

What's with the lack of Kane in RMT? Is it because of a poor euros? He's surely done enough in the previous 2 seasons to attest to his quality. Always punished me last season as well when I didn't have him.

I have to agree. Kane will for sure have his fair share of points, but I think it's better value somewhere else, and budget will be important again this season. His slow start of the last season after the u21 tournament also deters me, and there also a Dembele factor.

2nd draft of the year. Think I'm happy with this, at least until a few transfers happen to change my plans....

      Foster
      Shaw, Williams, Stones

Aye, there's a question mark over him. Still, none of the United attackers have really stood out in pre-season thus far and (if we're assuming they will actually be decent in attack generally) then a 9m player nailed on to play in an attacking position, with a share of set pieces and as a differential seems worth a punt.

Redmond will start v Watford imo, the kind of small diminutive forward players that puel likes - his front two at nice were below 179cm so suits his fluid system. Austin doesn't. Long-Redmond up top

I'd put JRod out of that equation, clearly 4th choice from that lot. Long and Redmond will start imo because they suit Puel's system most.

Ramirez or Gradel, can't make my mind up between them. Think Gradel is the more threatening player but Gaston has set pieces and far better fixtures

Gradel for me. Ramirez hasn't really done great in the Premier League in previous spells with Southampton and Hull though he's still tempting. Gradel's 1 goal and 5 assists in 891 minutes (basically 10 games) is a decent return for a 5.5 midfielder.

Cheers B+W. I guess BOU attack is also more trusted than MID, especially at this level.

bournemouth carry a larger attacking threat than boro, ibe has to be nailed for the price they bought him for and I'd assume gradel would be shoe-in for the other flank

I've been going over the Bournemouth fan forums and around 40% of the predicted lineups don't have Gradel 😕 Some think King/Pugh could start on the left flank with Afobe Wilson upfront. Some think Aké could come in and form a 3 man midfield with King LW, Wilson lone striker. Ibe on the right in every predicted lineup.

Personally do think Gradel is nailed though.

Did a few tweaks to get better defensive rotation. Quite content with the attack, unless Ayew leaves. Plan is to WC in GW4 or 5 Thoughts?

      Foster, Jaku
      Terry, Souare, Friend, Mee, Kone
      Hazard, Eriksen, Ayew, Deulofeu, Capoue/Hojbjerg
      Kun, Ibra, Gray

Strong attack. If the rotation in defence works out then you're solid through, especially if you're planning a relatively early wildcard.

Heaton rotates better with Foster than Mannone does.

Valencia isn't nailed, and neither is Paredes. A bit of bad luck and your defence is in tatters.

        Redmond isn't nailed.

          Good feedback. Cheers

Heaton over Mannone is definitely a thought that has crossed my mind.

Will monitor Valencia, but if it's too unsure after Comm Shield, I'll go safe with Shaw. Valencia so much potential though.

One I can take a risk on is Redmond. OOP and license to run

            • 13 Years

Aye, Valencia has massive upside if he plays and if he gets the shirt he's a better pick than Shaw, guess it comes down to if you are up for taking the risk or not.

Fair enough on the Redmond punt, could be explosive if he gets his spot up top. Or even on the wing really, don't see why he can't play the Mane role in that SOT side. Good luck 🙂

There is a lot of banter about whether you have to have Ibra or not. I know he's explosive, but not having Aguero gives you an amazing 15 players. A couple of blanks early on and it's a totally different forward line for all. I kinda hope it happens

I'm tempted to go without Aguero until my GW4 wildcard. I keep telling myself that Aguero starts slow and new signings usually start big, but in the back of my head I know its all gibberish. Will probably just end up flipping a coin.

          • 13 Years

The GW1 armband choice is the deciding factor. At least 1/3 of all teams in the game are gonna have Kun (c) for the Sunderland game and if he explodes, you're already playing catch-up. If he had Liverpool's fixtures I may even risk it myself, but it's too dangerous to make that sort of risk so early on.

Yeah the percent of people captaining Kun is something that I haven't considered. On the other hand, if Mahrez grabs a brace against Hull, I'll be ahead; and what better time to take a risk than the beginning when I can catch up? Then again, Aguero IS Aguero, so he'll probably get 4 goals and an assist. I will certainly keep thinking about it. Thanks.
