The Fantasy Football Scout Dugout FC League draft night is fast approaching.

For those who missed our introductory article, Dugout FC is a free to play, draft-based Fantasy game that allows you to join or create a custom league, made up of multiple divisions.

There’s full promotion and relegation between the divisions and the game itself is driven by an Opta-based scoring system so advanced, Dugout FC are convinced it’s one of the best around.

It’s not too late to sign up to take part in draft night, which takes place this Friday at 8pm UK time.

In addition to resetting our 69-division Fantasy Football Scout South league from last year, we have also created a brand new Fantasy Football Scout North league to meet demand for the upcoming campaign.

Tactics for Draft Night

Dugout FC’s draft system is classified as a “snake” draft.

The team with the first overall pick selects, followed by the team with the second pick, third pick, and so on. At the end of the first round, the team that just drafted (with the last pick in the first round) will have the first pick in the second round and the round continues in reverse order.

There are ten teams in a division with up to 18 players allowed in each squad, there will be 18 rounds of picks before each of the teams are complete.

During the draft, you’ll have two minutes to claim your pick before your shortlist kicks in and selects a player on your behalf.

Preparation for draft night is key and the first step, aside from forming your shortlist in Dugout FC, is to form a ranking sheet for the players on your list.

This will structure your targets in order of preference – the bigger your list, the more you’ll have to turn to on the night as the two minutes ticks down on your selection.

The obvious tactic is to work down your list, prioritising your high rank players, although there will be times when you’ll consider reacting to the selections of others, perhaps promoting a player in your ranking list or even bringing in a new player. Fundamentally, however, for at least the first three or four rounds, it’s a good idea to stick to your decided ranks in order to start your squad with a foundation of players that you have some confidence in. After that, you can consider taking risks.

Getting your first round pick right is crucial as there can be a large points gap between the player list’s handful of high performing players and the chasing pack.

In 2015/16 just five players breached the 200 points barrier, including Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, who were the game’s highest scorers and the standout midfield picks, finishing on 254 and 242 points respectively. The rest of this elite 200 point club were made up of three forwards, Harry Kane on 230 points, Sergio Aguero on 220 and Jamie Vardy on 204.

To put their points scoring feat into perspective the next highest placed midfielder was Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen on 197, while the next highest placed forward was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez on 188.

Player Versatility

Another notable feature of Dugout FC is the concept of player versatility. For example, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney can all be played either in midfield or as a forward.

You should take a note of such players as, securing an asset who can fulfil a number of roles offers flexibility and can help cover injuries.

Be aware though they will score differently depending on where they are fielded. Midfielders earn a point for a clean sheet but need to complete 40 passes per point, while forwards only need to complete 30.

The Scoring Model

Be sure to check in on Dugout FC’s scoring model to be clear on the match events at play and how these are applied, in particular, across the positions.

The scoring is finely balanced between full-backs and centre-backs but you’ll want to either target dominant defenders who win a raft of aerial balls, or forward-thinking full-backs who provide a ready supply of accurate crosses.

The criteria for midfielders is pretty clear – aside from goals and assists, those who make accurate passes, accompanied with chances created, should be high on your list of priorities.

However, given that there are points earned for fouls won, you should also factor in those players who frequently run at opponents and earn free kicks for their side. Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha topped last season’s fouls won table with 90, closely followed by Mahrez on 83 and Swansea’s attack minded midfielder Andre Ayew on 78.

Up front, it’s clearly all about goals and shots, although again, big centre forwards who also draw fouls offer some handy supplementary points. Harry Kane looks a good prospect in this regard having won 55 fouls last term as well as topping the goal attempt table.

Dugout FC’s player list offers a full rundown of last season’s points to offer guidance on your draft night priorities. This, combined with the statistics in our Members area, should help you form your ranking list ahead of tomorrow evening.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, if you’re yet to sign up, it’s not too late and here is a reminder of the link to join our newly created Fantasy Football Scout North league. This can also be found by scanning leagues.

Good luck to all on draft night.

I like it. Maybe a little light at the back. Keep an eye on FM's staring role. I'm cautious of Rooney, but hopefully the Community Shield reveals more about his role.

    reposting - bottomed post

thinking of getting one southampton mid - torn between redmond and tadic.

currently on tadic due to his previous experience + on pens but if redmond takes on that mane role and makes that his, he'd be fpl gold especially since his finishing's quite good.

    opinions?

For me it's Tadic. Redmond is a good option if you can't afford Tadic, but I think Tadic will be a great FPL option this season.

The fact that Redmond's been playing alongside Long is really tempting, and it also gives that extra 1.5 of picking him ahead of Tadic.

It's great having some of these 5.5-6.5 midfield enablers that could be really good, such as Deulofeu, but I'd rather not bank on a lot of them just in case, and stick with the already proven ones if possible.

    Michy Batshuayi

Not a name I've seen mentioned in these parts at all.

Excellent form from last season in a poor Marseilles side.
Will certainly take one of the two available striking slots at Chelsea.
Chelsea have all of the weapons to challenge for the title; ergo to score lots of points.
9.0m pricetag makes him very appealing for managers looking to bolster their midfield with two big hitters.
Only downside (and it is a big factor in my selection policy) is that he's new to the league, which I'm always wary of.

What am I missing, I can't be the only one?
I've backed him at 20/1 to be the EPL Top Scorer, think he's a massive differential

That second point is debatable. Costa + Hazard could be the first choice front 2.

Conte could also play 4-1-4-1 - which I think he will after the first few games as it suits the squad more

      Never been in PL.
      Had a long season.
Not at all sure he is nailed, actually I think he is one for future however long time we have to wait I of course have no idea.
Chelsea hunting Lukaku is not a good sign for me at least.
Can they really start both Lukaku and Batshit? Remains to be seen if Lukaku deal comes through.

Last season I started with Henessey and Pantilimon due to the news Henessey was about to be transferred to WB before the transfer window shut. The transfer did not happen and he was dropped for McCarthy 🙄 Then I WCed GW4 and got McCarthy who then proceeded to be dropped with Hennessey starting instead from that point on. 😐

Currently I have Foster/Heaton in my draft, but slowly being tempted to eke out a 0.5 by getting Jakupovic to rot on my bench. Am I going to regret it again rather than just sucking it up and getting Heaton?

    1. Milner4eva
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I understand the temptation but it's false economy IMO. For the benefits you get (better fixtures every week, completely protected against having to make emergency GK transfers), 0.5 isn't much to pay

      1. Ziro
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Seems reasonable right? That 0.5 might protect me against price drops even, not to speak of a price-rise for my back-up keeper or a saved hit. Leaning to Heaton now. thx for your comment.

Aye, can see heaton price rising (seem to remember he was 4th highest scoring Gk a few years ago). Can also see hull getting absolutely pumped and jak being sold in droves.

          1. Ziro
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

The thing is even if Hull are awful Jakupovic won't lose value imo. Seem to remember something like GKs not losing value as nobody transfers them out. And that because Jaku is the 2nd keeper for everyone. He won't be touched on a FT, and WCs don't affect value. Decisions!

          2. Pasqualinho
            • 16 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

GKs don't drop in price very quickly. Last year it took 5GWs for Hennessey to drop in price and by then he was back in the team so soon got back up to 4.0 (and beyond). I don't think Jak is that big a risk - with no other 4.0 playing GKs it slows down a lot of sales because you need 0.5 more to pay for an alternative.

I'm considering doubling up on Chelsea with Hazard and Willian

Conte seems intent on using that 4-2-4 and it's very attacking. I expect Chelsea do dominate a lot of games especially against those that struggle to retain possession

Willian on set pieces is always a good shout, and Hazard is expected to flourish once more

Worth a shout. I'll probably want a Chelski defender though.

I'd keep an eye on Cuadrado. He looked bright in the friendlies and might poses a risk to Willian.

but then, do you expect them to score a lot? doubling up seems a tad excessive at their respective prices.

4-2-4 very misleading in that it sounds mightily attack-minded, can't see Chelsea winning 3-0 at a canter in any one PL match

True, doubling up is too excessive. But haz only needs an assist to get baps and haul

Only excessive if you don't think they'll score a lot

Doubling up on SIlva/ Aguero, or Sanchez/ Ozil, or Alli/ Kane, or Gerrard/ Suarez didn't do too badly in the past and it doesn't break the bank

Not in my XI because I think Matic has improved a lot from last season already and is continuing to build fitness and form. There have been glimpses of him dribbling 3-4 players in a go & him tackling superbly...just need to let that continue cos imo he is our best midfielder when in form. Fabregas on other hand is a complete liability to our defence and does make up enough for it in attack nowadays.

I really want Oscar to become a regular this season more than anything. The boy is one of the reasons he got me addicted to Chelsea. I always supported Chels but never used to wake up for late-night matches....once I did wake up cos my friend forced me to! Guess which match it was? Chelsea vs Juventus. Oscar scored a wonderful goal on debut. I was in love.... 🙂

Willian never crosses my mind. 82,102,135 points in the last 3 seasons from someone price 7.0+is not for me.

If it wasn't for him being on Chelsea no one would ever speak his name. So many cheaper options that can produce at his level on 'smaller' teams.

I think 4-2-4 formation will be figured out early on by other teams...it's telling that the new manager seems a bit at sea with what formation to use. All good having a great front line if you can't get the ball to them.

I am torn between two strategies as I am in two money leagues. Plan around fixtures for 5 weeks, evening the squad out a bit OR go big straight away, so I now have team stuck in between the two!

    Forster
    Shaw - Walker - Stones
    Sanchez - Hazard - Mahrez - Bolasie - Ibe
    Aguero - Gray

    Jakupovic - Friend - B.Smith - Grabban.

Gray is the FFS wagon compared to Negredo. I have learnt that in terms of close calls, rely on FFS, sink or swim together at the start and you can makeup over the rest of the FPL managers. But once you fall behind FFS then God be with you.
