Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

So confused. I am going crazy been changing lineup for hours. Pleaseeee help me.
    Lineup 1
    Cech/Jaku
    Coleman/Walker-Shaw-Friends-Lenihan-4.0
    Mahrez-Hazard-Tadic-Deulofeu-Leko
    Lukaku-Aguero-Gray(or Long)

    Lineup 2
    Hart/Jaku
    Coleman/Walker-Shaw-Friends-Pieters-Lenihan
    Lamela/Townsend-Hazard-Tadic-Deulofeu-Leko
    Kane-Aguero-Gray(or Long)
??? Comments are so much appreciated
Million dollar question is: Lamela/Townsend + Kane or Mahrez + Lukaku? I am worried about the lack of cover of Spurs at lineup1. If Mahrez did end up at Arsenal would he start?

Spurs do have decent fixtures, walker is a decent pick imo. Ppl are uncertain about Kane's points due to dembele. Some view Alli to be overpriced. Eriksen is a great pick tho, I'm comparing eriksen and firmino every day

Think ROdriguez is nailed on? Not sold on Kante.

I would downgrade defence and spend it in midfield.

Too much on defence, downgrade bellerin and toby. Switch paredes with sb more nailed.
i like ozil and alli picks, refreshing and different. I wouldnt pick kante, not enough point output. Once you downgrade defenders you should have more budget to upgrade kante.
      Stirkers look great.

Nugent was just a filler at rhetoric time, not expecting any game time and would have been a permanent fixture on the bench. I changed my team since then and it looks like this.

        Foster

        Shaw/Walker//Morgan

        Mahrez/DeBruyne/Tadic/Deulofeu

        Aguero/Rooney/Grey

    Loving the knowledge sharing!
    Please RMT:

    Mandanda/Jakupovic
    Shaw/Sagna/Stones/Friend/Souare
    KDB/William/Bolasie/Fletcher/Mkhitaryan
    Lukaku/Aguero/Long

    Questions:
Will Mandanda play ahead of Hennessey?
I hardly seen Sagna picked, any reason why? Nice fixtures
    William/Mkhitaryan/Lukaku or Hazard/Ibra/Watson?

Many thanks for any comments 🙂

Gabriel the only question mark. Coleman is a good shout, koeman might get some def structure in. Keep an eye out for rumoured swansea transfer. If ayew and williams move i may not touch swansea for a few gws. Overall very well balanced.

Not having kun is the main point. I'd replace ibra with kun and downgrade kdb to miki, tho that mixture is 0.5 is more expensive. But you can extra funds by downgrading dann

Hello! Please help and pick my team apart..

    GK: Valdes / Schmeichel
Def: Bellerin / Williams / Friend / Walker / Morgan
Mid: De Bruyne / Puncheon / Mkhitaryan / King / Fletcher
Forwards: Lukaku / Aguero / Carroll

My main worries: Lack of Chelsea/Spurs/Arsenal, Big Ibra and not being able to afford him in the future, strength of keepers

    Appreciate your advice!

Way way WAY to much spent in defense. Get a couple of 4.5m and maybe even a 4m. Free up some cash to improve that midfield. Forwards are good, although West Ham don't strike me as prolifi this season

I'm going with Ayew but it's definitely a coin flip. Ayew will be playing up front and Siggy logged in a number of heavy minutes for Iceland at the Euros and maybe not fully fit. At least that's my reasoning. Of course he is the penalty taker and free kick taker which is a draw back! lol

He was one of the first players I picked but the closer it gets to kick off, the more concerned I'm getting.

Looks pretty good, as much as people are saying Friend will do well I'd still see him as a sub more than a first team, Middlesborough are too liable to concede as a newly promoted side. I'd replace him with Erik Pieters or Neil Taylor. Other than that looks decent.

    Right guys, I'm struggling...

Basically, I want a team that can accommodate Zlatan, Aguero, De Bruyne & Hazard.

    At the minute :

    Foster/Jaku
    Shaw/Azpi/Baines/Empty/Smith
    Hazard/KDB/Siggy/Capoue/Carrick
    Aguero/Zlatan/Rondon

I'm looking to play a 4-3-3 but only have 2.5m left over for my 4th defender. Any ideas where to change?

    1. Cheeseoid
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      9 years, 4 months ago

Yes you need to take money out of Shaw and Azpi and downgrade them to 4.5's

I don't think it is worth it tbh

Choose Hazard or KDB and work from there

      1. NatMair97
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, I considered that but I wanted to keep a decent defence. Think I'll have KDB for game week 1 and then take in Hazard for the next one. City play Sudnerland on the opening day and are then away to stoke whereas Chelsea have a tougher game against West Ham on the opening day but then have 3 decent games.

I don't trust the Man City midfield. There are jsut too many of them for any to be secure.

I also doubt Long's security of starts.

Generally good though. You may want to make sure your 4 million defender and whether he will start

Looks good I would go shaw or goalman personally, ramirez and keep 0.5 to jump on first bandwagon or perhaps taylor/kone to stones if he goes to city or save for first injury?

Anyone else not overly keen on Jonty's initial team?

No doubt he's a better FPL player than I am.

I think though where it is strongest is the simplicity of his captain picks.

Isn't Kos out for game or two? Kol may not play? Stellar defence and attack so not surprisingly very risky mid, good at price range but perhaps a bit too risky unless planning to wildcard wk 3/4? Short term could be good but I would worry too much going for it, out of ten I would give it...4 long term but more if calculated gamble to int break

Your poor, neglected midfield line up!

I like your thinking - it's different, but could work. Spend as much as you want in attack, get some good players in defence a lot cheaper than midfield and hope that you pick up a few points with 'differentials' in midfield.

The danger, of course is that there are a few potential 200-pointers in midfield who you miss out on. The money on Zlatan is risky too - he's got an amazing scoring record so could be incredibly good value, but he's new to the PL and is getting on a bit.

You might need to take a few hits to change the side around if it doesn't work out.

I think you could probably get better value from the defence, too.

I'd love it if you went for this - I want to see how it goes. If you do go for it, give it at least 6 weeks before a major overhaul because points are going to be lumpy - some lean weeks and some spectacular weeks.

My constant tinkering has taken effect again this morning.

    Which is better

    De Gea/Jaku

    Azpi Shaw Evans Friend Soare

    Hazard Tadic Alli Capoue Leko

    Aguero Gray Kane

    Or

    De Gea/Jaku

    Azpi Shaw Evans Friend Stones

    KBD Martial Fletcher Capoue Tadic

    Lukaku Aguero Gray

First in my opinion. Better Hazard than kdb since u have city cover in kun and kdb is not a 100% starter under pep..

I'd have thought KDB would be nailed on if fit. 7 goals and 10 assists despite injury made me think he was their biggest creative spark for Aguero to feed off.

Tempted for Hazard for first week or so as KDB appears to be lacking match fitness.

Maybe, but with nolito and sane coming in pep will have options..

I agree that kdb will most likely start, but there is a small risk he wont. Haz on the other hand is 100%

Overall city is a mine field apart from Aguero...

    Foster - heaton

Walker- Stones- friend - Fernandez - souare

Hazard- eriksen- ayew - gradel - fletcher

    Kun- Ibra- long

Are Fernandez and souare nailed? Really want to rotate mid-cry-swa on 3x 4,5m defenders
