After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

Which premium mid would you go for ?

Mahrez / De Bruyne / Hazard / Ozil

Might have been amazing goals, but Musa has never proven himself to be a big goalscorer. In around 17500 minutes of club football, he has scored 66 goals. That's one goal every 260 minutes. However he has enjoyed his biggest scoring season with 18 goals in almost 4000 minutes, that's one goal every 215 minutes. Even if he followed that trend and played every minute of the coming season, that would mean he would score around 15 goals. With the busy schedule Leicester have he's a rotation risk, or might be playing on the wing. There might be better options at 7.5m.

First post here. Third season, succeded 2 times in the top20k.

    RMT please (352):

    Courtois (Jaku)

Souaré, Shaw, Morgan, (Koné), (B. Smith)

    Haz, Tadic, Deu, Bolasie, Lamela

    Kun, Ibra (Borini)

    My concerns:
WBA def for Souaré or Koné?
Save .5 on Courtois and invest in a 5mil defender (Stones?)

    Thx!

Looks good for a Kunibra team. If playing a 3-5-2 that midfield looks a bit weak. I would swap a mid > 4.5 and upgrade Borini to one of the many decent strikers in the 6.5 range (Gray, Long, Negredo)

Gabriel no option cause Arsene commented, that only one of Kosc/Gab will start 1st game...
I expect a stronger SUN season, Borini could be a good rotation option, couldn't he?

Midfield needs serious tweaking. Even if you are sporting the most expensive FWD line.

Arnautovic not worth the funds. Way better value for his funds or less.
Kante is not attacking at all, will not return much in terms of FPL.
Grujic is a waste of space in a FPL squad.

Look at these mids instead: Lamela, Antonio, Siggy, Ayew, Fab

In the end, it looks like a kind of a lottery between the likes of Fischer, Gaston, Gradel, and even Feghouli - everyone has some pros, so has cons.

They're all good. For a bit more there's Redmond, Deulofeu.

Got a good old fashioned RMT team for you clever types!

    Cech I Jakupovic
    Stones I Shaw I Williams I Francis I Friend
    Bolasie I Tadic I Deulofeu I Mkhitaryan I Ramirez
    Ibra I Kun I Gray

Bit worried my midfield is a bit weak, what you reckon?

Wouldn't double up on Mkhi when you have Ibra.

Perhaps Mkhi for one of the other beast 9.5s available (Mahrez for first fixture potentially?)

Morning lads, think I'm starting to get pretty pleased with this one.
Still appricirate comments / rate. thanks.

    3-4-3
    Foster - (Jaku)
    Azpi - Shaw - Friend - (Pieters) - (Paredes)
    Haz - Eriksen - Tadic - Ramirez - (Capoue)
    Ibra - Kun - Gray

    Thanks!

Vardy+Mkhi over Mahrez+Ibra makes life so much easier...

But makes it hard to switch to Kane.

It doesn't. Kane is only 1m more than Vardy and I have 0.5m itb....

        It's one trade away.

Do you think Mkhitaryan will hit the ground running? Looked a bit isolated out on the wing in pre-season so far.

He was the first player in my team, but the Ibra ownership and Mkhi's latest performances has me worried.

Hands up if you're playing the draft game tonight. o/

Just spent ages shortlisting players to realise you can't change the order of them afterwards. Fail.

You can change the order, you just click their number and change it to what you want it to be and it will autosort the rest

Funny how people are all saying how essential Hazard is but Sanchez is 'too expensive'.. Wonder how many GWs it will take for people to realise how wrong they've been (GW1 imo)

        2 cheap strikers?

I would ideally have both Mahrez vs Hull > Hazard for me.. Hazard hasn't redeemed last season yet

Amazed some don't think Sanchez will play. Sure he's a bit under done but he's a beast and Wenger already has lots of 1st teamers out. Liverpool on opening day ain't the time to be playing a shadow side

Will almost certainly play with the amount of players not back in training yet I think.. Let's see how many minutes he gets today and Sunday

I agree. But I want to see how sharp he is in the PS games before I tear up the team to shoe horn him in with Aguero and Hazard

Anyone around have any info on Middlesbrough?
    Who's best option between;
    1. Fischer
    Or
    2. Gaston

who's on set piece and more nailed?

Gaston started 15 games last season bit impressed. Midd won't be free scoring but prefer Ramirez of the two

BTW, given that Santon will join West Ham, would Byram get first team rightback position ahead of Antonio?

      Very unlikely

antonio is nailed on i believe. it's either santon and bryam competing for that left back spot or bryam playing second fiddle for both santon and antonio.

Many WH supporters say that Antonio is pretty much wasted in rightback slot. We'll see.
