Last season Leicester midfielder Riyad Mahrez took the Premier League by storm and plenty of Fantasy managers by surprise. Finishing as the Fantasy Premier League’s top points scorer he has proved more than worthy of a price hike from 5.5m in 2015/16 to 9.5m this term. Given his high price, and the hefty price tags of a number of other options such as Sergio Aguero (13m), finding the next bargain basement priced, high scoring midfielder for your team is likely to be crucial to success in 2016/17.

Here are four 5.5m gems that have the potential to become a regular fixture in your starting XI,  just as Mahrez was last season.

Albert Adomah

Team: Middlesbrough

Next five: STO, sun, wba, CRY, eve

Albert Adomah has slipped under the radar with just 0.7% ownership. New guys to ‘Boro such as Viktor Fischer (who wasn’t even a regular starter for the club he joined from, Ajax) may need time to adapt to the rigors of English football. In contrast Adomah played a significant part in Middlesbrough’s promotion to the Premier League and has been a key member of the first team, as his statistics for the last three seasons show.

2013/2014 – 42 appearances, 12 goals, 6 assists

2014/2015 – 46 appearances, 6 goals, 4 assists

2015/2016 – 43 appearances, 6 goals, 5 assists

Granted that is not 2015/16 Mahrez form, but in my opinion that still  represents a good return for a 5.5m midfielder.

Wilfried Zaha

Team: Crystal Palace

Next five: WBA, tot, BOU, mid, STO

Owned by just 2.0% of managers, Wilfried Zaha scored two goals and made five assists last season. But while that s doesn’t offer too much optimism, Fantasy managers are hoping that a revamped attacking line up at Palace will ensure he finishes the season with a far better goal and assist tally. Andros Townsend on the other wing and the possibility of Liverpool’s Christian Benteke joining to lead the line offers Zaha and Palace the chance to significantly improve their attacking display.

Marc Albrighton

Team: Leicester

Next five: hul, ARS, SWA, liv, BUR

In just 2.2% of FPL teams, Marc Albrighton scored two and made seven assists last season. Accruing 117 points in the process, this put him above the likes of Chelsea men Pedro and Eden Hazard as well as Manchester City’s David Silva in terms of FPL points. Seemingly nailed on in the first team under Claudio Ranieri, Albrighton offers a cheaper, viable alternative to Mahrez into the Foxes midfield.

Sofiane Feghouli

Team: West Ham-

Next five: che, BOU, mci, WAT, wba

The 5.3% Algerian is the most popular of our quartet thanks to some impressive displays in midseason. Another bonus is that he rotates well with a cheap Southampton midfield option, most notably Nathan Redmond (6.0m). For the first five fixtures the pair would give owners a mouthwatering run of games (WAT, BOU, SUN, WAT, SWA).  This tactic could work for those managers planning to wildcard early in particularly. It’s also worth mentioning that across his 98 appearances over the last five seasons,  where he has featured for more than 60 minutes, he has 20 goals and 34 assists, a somewhat decent return for a £5.5m midfielder.

Thanks for this. If I was looking for a player to rotate Feghouli would be top of my list due to those incredible paired up West Ham and Southampton fixtures.

Due to going strong in attack and midfield I'm looking for a 5.5 midfielder that can play most weeks, early on at least so fixtures are swaying me.

Currently Matty Phillips (WBA) or Ramirez/Fischer/Adomah are top of my watchlist.

....but I'm struggling to resist the lure of my old favourite Jason Puncheon, also just 5.5m. With Bolasie gone there's more set pieces and greater chance of an advanced midfield role in Jason's favour.

Good shout on Puncheon. Bolasie leaving is key and they'll need some attacking 'punch'

WBA have struggled to score in pre season. Wondering why offensive rotation is promoted here when it seems to be slammed by so many experts/veterans?

Plus isn't Feg/Red risk of early subs - seem prime candidates for 60 min replacements

I also like Feghouli, but how is looking for minutes, with Ayew/Payet/Kouyate etc.

Sounds similar to me heavy up front for the start. I already had Redmond/Feg rotation and want 3 ever presents for first weeks to play 4-3-3 until wildcard Boro provide a good option for the 5.5 spot but i'm. struggling to choose is Adomah deffo going to start? Seen a lot of predicted line ups without him? He's my choice if I'm I'm confident he'll play. As an Albion fan I'd advise steering clear of Phillips for now we won't score many and with morro back, Saido still loitering, potential for Leko, McLean he's not guaranteed we'll play fletcher, Yacob, Rondon for sure other 3 spots I'm not 100% on

Ramirez seems to be the current Boro midfielder of choice and is only owned by 0.7% so could be a good buy.

Do we think Albrighton is still nailed on? Lots of talk of Musa/Gray getting starts so he might miss out

I think Feghouli was a good option until Ayew signed. Lots of competition for places now

but for the best performing 5.5, i think feghouli if he nails a spot or Gaston ramirez as he is the most involved 5.5 in the game.

    got them all tho!!

good article. I would personally mention Matt Philipps here. He was brilliant at the end of 14/15 season at QPR, haven't followed him last season, but I think he can be a hidden gold. If have to choose from these 4 I would personally go with Adomah, but decided to go with non rotation front 7 this season.

He's currently my 5.5m mid. Fixtures, lack of rotation and as you say Prem League pedigree all in his favour.

I'm not rotating either. Tried that for the last two seasons and managed to neatly swerve all of Puncheon and Hoolahan's returns.

I wish Bournemouth's fixtures were better. They are pretty dire early on. As soon as they improve Gradel and Ibe both under consideration. Luckily we have a few games to check them out.

Really hoping Zaha can kick on this season. Seems he's never really improved despite all that early talent at a young age. Some consistent starts will help so maybe this is his season?

Feghouli is interesting but I'm incredibly wary of rotation with so many attacking options at West Ham. The arrival of Ayew and also Tore and the eventual return of Lanzini means there is plenty of competition. Then again Mahrez wasn't nailed at the start of last season either.

Albrighton and Adomah will never be Mahrez players. Maybe 110pts max from those guys, I'm sure there will be better options.

Agree on Zaha. I saw him play at Villa last season and he was appalling, touch was poor, couldn't find a man with a pass and kept running down blind alleys and losing the ball.

Then you see him on Match of the Day ripping a defence apart.

ayew moving to west ham has knocked me off Feghouli. opting for townsend for the first few weeks and see what happens after the 1st few weeks

Love the Redmond Feghouli combination. I was on Oscar and Fletcher, but I prefer this combination especially as I have Gray up front and there may be weeks when both midfielders are a better option in a 3-5-2 formation. also frees up another 0.5 and offers the chance to be in on day one on a cheap bandwagon.

Given that Liverpool's first three games are now all away from home, is Firminho not a massive gamble?

Two of the first three games are Arsenal and Tottenham away.

What about Bojan for extra 0.5? I'm not too sure about him and his fixtures doesnt look good. But he plays behind striker which makes me think he can be a good option.

Feghouli has no rotation threat from Payet or Ayew. His threat comes from Lanzini who is injured for now and Tore will be eased into the action. Bilic trusts Feghouli a lot

Good call, The Next Mahrez exactly the same question I've been pondering for the past month. Want to believe in Redmond but feel he will get 60 mins at best, then maybe become one of those players who comes on in the last 10 mins against tired defenders. Wasn't even a guaranteed starter for Norwich.
Liking Gradel at the moment for 5.5, 17 goals and 3 assists in his last full season for St Etienne, forgetting his debut season with Bournemouth.
If you want the 'full' Mahrez template, had to be showing good form at the end of the previous season, looking great in pre-season, if I recall some FFS members on here did have Mahrez in their teams from GW1 on that basis.
Ideally need to be from a humble background, playing unremarkable football in a lowly Ligue 1 club but lets not be too fussy...

I had just put Albrighton in just before reading this 🙂

Can't justify the extra 1m on Townsend or go for Gaston Ramirez instead, that spot is not going to make or break the team but Albrighton has a game that's suited to fantasy.

What about Ramirez? He is 5.5m and supposed to play in the hole for Middlesbrough. Last season 1,295 minutes in Championship, 7 goals and 4 assists.

But is he nailed? Is he on penalties?

He's nailed. Question mark over who is on pens, as it's usually Leadbitter.

He's on set pieces and direct free kicks though

to the people saying Redmond... i think he's a player that will be rotated a lot with Soton, and if i learned anything from past seasons in the game is that minutes = gold... i don't want players who are subbed out at the 60 or 75th minute mark when most goals actually happen between 75-90

    Hi Guys,

Can somebody tell me when the 'Team News' section will be on the site?

    The next Mahrez...

Ramirez comes to mind. Clearly talented but in previous seasons has looked lightweight, never finishing a game, sometimes subbed before 60, just as it was with Mahrez 2 seasons ago.

Gradel definitely has got enough talent.

The one nobody seems to be talking about is Snodgrass, he has everything apart from pace. I think people are overlooking due to his Hull jersey but i'd prefer a key player in a relegation fighting team than a more expensive middling player in a better team.

Nice article, I think Feghouli definitely has a touch of je ne sais quoi about him. If Payet is ever out injured he has set pieces too.

I also reckon Redmond and one of Fischer/ Ramirez could turn out to be tremendous value, but as for the next Mahrez I dunno 😕
