Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Anyone going without Kun / Ibra in their second teams and thinking of Sanchez, Haz etc in a power midfield?

Can someone please rate my team out of 10?
    GK: Foster
    Def: Baines,Walker,Shaw
    Mid: Tadic,Hazard, Lamela, Zaha
    Forward: Aguero, Gray, Lukaku
    Bench:Heaton, Friend, Fernandez,Watson

If Ayew stays at Swansea I will sell Lamela and someone else to squeeze him in.Also, will rotate Heaton and Foster according to fixtures

    Thanks!!

An 8. Just not sure about Lukaku. You could change to Negredo or Musa & get Bolasie or Townsend for Palace or Eriksen for Spurs.

    How is this?

    Foster-Jakupovic
    Friend-Baines-Shaw-Dann-Lenihan
    Mahrez-Mane-Oscar-Lamela-Cazorla
    Long-Aguero-Gray

Too midfield heavy? With this I have to have Long or Gray sitting on the bench, mostly long since Gray is becoming untouchable at least in pre season. So that's 6.5 sitting on bench which will make a German scream! 🙁

How important are goalkeepers? I've never really gone for high priced keepers, so far in initial squad I have Heaton and Pickford (I think Pickford is good enough to get a starting place soon). I've never been one to get two decent keepers and rotate, is that the best thing to do?

Here is my slightly revised squad. What do you think?

    Keepers: Forster, Heaton
Defenders: Alderweireld, Shaw, Coleman, Friend, Souare
Midfielders: Martial, Firmino, Eriksen, Tadic, Snodgrass
    Forwards: Ibrahimovic, Gray, Negredo

    Thanks for feedback!

Urgent RMT and surgery needed please - first team draft and haven't had the chance to look into the finer details of who I've missed/wrongly included.

I usually like to stick to a strong midfield 3-5-2 but struggling to spot a bargain midfielder to help this year! e.g. Mahrez!

    Foster // Hennessey

    Gabriel - McAuley - Stones // Pieters - Paredes

    Winjaldum - Mahrez - Payet - Alli - Fabregas

    Aguero - Carroll // Valencia

    Any help much appreciated

Not too sure about Stones, potential city move maybe and not really a high scoring defender, probably go for Funes Mori instead of him. Winjaldum not the best liverpool midfielder to go for, might play deeper under Klopp. Carroll is a big question mark for me. I was going to go for him but I think Callum Wilson is a safer 6.5mil striker. And is Mandanda going to start over Hennessey?

    Should be the latest time...

    HEATON
    SHAW MORGAN STONES
    FERGHOULI HAZ MKHI TOWNSHEND
    IBRA KUN GRAY

    Bench: Foster; Friend Capoue Parades.

Current main concern is having Mkhi and Zlatan.

    Should I:
    A) Keep it as it is.
    B) Make money and go for KDB
    C) Go for a cheaper mid than Mkhi and boost my defence. If so which mid?

    Appreciate feedback guys.

      Looks a good side!
Either keep it as it is or maybe swap mkhi slightly for maybe a coutinho, alli, townsend or siggy?
Wouldn't be keen on having KDB and aguero tbh.
Mind rating my team a few comments up? 🙂

So what you guys think of this "almost final setup"? I will probably WC GW4 or so, so keep that in mind.

    Foster | Jakupovic
    Friend | Shaw | Souaré | Walker | Kingsley
    Hazard | Lamela | Tadic | Deulofeu | Fletcher
    Ibrahimovic | Agüero | Negredo

I got 1m in the bank atm.
Let me know any thoughts please, positive and negative.
Ideas what to do with the 1m?

    Jakupovic to Butland?
    Walker to Alderweireld?
    Other moves?

Decent team! Do you really wanna go without one of the big hitters up front such as Ibra and Aguero? Maybe take some money from your defenders?
Also not sure about Austin as with the likes of Mane and Pelle leaving could reduce his service, also with competition from Long?
Care to rate my team just below?

Honestly the only reason I havent gone with one of the big hitters is purely a risk i have chosen to take in the hope that neither ibra or aguero score. I like to take a risk if it pays off ill be in luck if not ill rue the day i didnt follow the majority of fpl players. I have chosen Austin since he has looked good in pre-season to date and I feel if he can have the kind of season he had for qpr when they were relegated then it could prove to be a great selection.

Sorry, but its a no no for me... Your defence is much too heavy. Sagna is a doubt after euros, Pogba may play deep which doesn't get many FPL points, Austin and Negredo are not 90 minutes players (Austin will probably start on the bench). You have no bench fooder, thus you will most likely see a lot of points left on bench. And if Kun or Ibra will start shooting you will be forced to make a lot of effort to bring one of them to team... Remeber - it's easier to downgrade heavy hitter then buy him when he is on the rise...

Hi there thanks for your feedback on my team above, I will definitely consider some of your suggestions. With regards to your team I think The overall balance of your team is very good however I question having Jakupovic as a back, I know he is really cheap but what id rather have a back who will actually play because if foster gets injured you have to waste a transfer to bring in another keeper. Defence is solid very similar to my team in many regards, i dont now to much about friend but if middlesborough can defend as well as they did last season in the championship in the premier league then he could be a steal, but its hard to say. In terms of midfield it is very solid, with regard to fletcher if you have extra money in the bank then I would say upgrade him otherwise he is still a solid player for the bench as he is a reliable midfielder and therefore he will start. In terms of your front I quite like it, However im not sure on gray i know he had a good season last season and hes had a good preseason but the teams the championship and thoose burnley have faced in pre-season arent the same quality in terms of defence as the premier league opposition, i feel maybe someone like long or even andy carrol as an outside pick could be useful

Well I bought jakupovic because of the fact that the other goalkeeper is injured until January so I think I will be okay on that front. I don't have any money in the bank and just wanted a nailed on starter who will guarantee 2 points if I ever need to call upon him, fletcher seemed to fit the bill. I also agree about gray, I keep switching between hi, and long and don't know which side to sway but I think gray may be a good risk and could turn out to be golden.

Stones and Targett are not nailed on starters .. Hence may want to avoid first up ...

Also, am presuming that the Ramirez in ur team is Gaston (Saints) ... If so, may want to relook and get an alternative attacking midfielder since u already have Tadic from Saints .. Should look to hedge ur bets between team 🙂

Martial was looking scratchy in the friendlies .. May take a while to come good

Also, not sure about Swansea as a team now with Ayew and Williams both departing.

Hence, you may want to swap out Martial + Routledge to get better attacking combo in midfield .. Say an Eriksen / Alli / Mane / Firmino / Barkley etc plus a Feghouli / Fischer / Redmond

Not sure two Man Utd defenders is the way forward, especially with Miki in the midfield too.
