There is a general consensus that a Fantasy Premier League forward line containing Sergio Aguero, a cheap striker and one of either Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy is the way to go. I want to persuade you that there are other ways to build your team.

First up here are two key factors to consider before rushing ahead with a two premium striker forward line.
1. The presence of comparable options from the same teams in midfield
2. The abundance of cheap yet promising strikers.
First of all though, I want to go into why people want to invest in Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy. Ownership is key. If they get off to a good start, people may fear falling behind in their leagues. Even worse, if those players increase in price it becomes harder to get them in. By having two premium picks, it is rather easy to make a change in Gameweek 2 or 3 without making too many sacrifices elsewhere. Changing from a 6.5million striker to an 11.0 million striker on the other hand requires a lot of sacrifices elsewhere on the pitch or maybe even a wildcard. Here is the thing though: None of those expensive strikers are guaranteed to perform, and at 6.5 there is a larger than usual strength in depth if your selected players don’t perform.

Ibrahimovic is 34 and Mourinho has already stated that his fitness needs to be kept an eye on. Vardy will likely be in a new system and Musa will be getting in on his goal tally. Meanwhile, Kane is playing without Dembele and also got off to a slow start last season.

Midfield Alternatives

As for midfield counterparts, Anthony Martial will set you back 9.5, saving you 2.0. Delle Alli or Christian Eriksen will save you 1.5 a piece compared to Kane and although Riyad Mahrez only saves you 0.5  compared to Vardy, he could easily outscore the England man.

Take that saving, plus the minimum of 3.5 you’ll make from taking a 6.5million striker over a 10.o one, and suddenly you have 4.0 -7.0 more to spend in midfield. That means another premium midfielder or two, and an easier way to get Alexis Sanchez in when Arsenal’s squad returns to normal.

Cheaper Options

As for the 6.5 or less options up front, let me just list a few:

Andre Gray from Burnley
Andy Carroll from West Ham
Connor Wickham from Crystal Palace
Callum Wilson and Benik Afobe from Bournmouth
Alfredo Negredo from Middlesborough
Chuba Akpom from Arsenal
Salomón Rondón and Saido Berahino from West Brom
Fernando Llorente from Swansea

Plus there are a few enticing 7.0-7.5 options that would be easy to get in and bargains if they end up getting transferred or playing regularly such as Christian Benteke, Ahmed Musa and Divock Origi.

Think you've hit the nail on the head for me with your point on reshuffling

I expect long term I'll be choosing either Ibra or Sergio, and picking from the form players (there's always some around the 6.5 mark)

It's gonna be much easier to do that and safer given the ownership to start with Aguero / Ibra / Gray (or similar) from GW1

This is spot on. For me not missing the boat and being able to replace is key. Easier to downgrade than upgrade so starting with two biggest costs and a low cost (which seems to be the source of goals for a mid-low table team).

    Kun, Ibra, Gray

I already have Hazard but which combo would you add to your MF alongside him:

    A) Sanchez and Routledge

    B) Tadic and Firmino

    Grateful of any opinions.

Would appreciate any assistance with my (against the grain, defender heavy) team....

    Heaton/(Foster)

    Terry, Shaw, Stones, (Baines, Friend)
    Tadic, Lamela, Oscar, Deulofeu, (Fegh)
    Kun, Kane, Gray

Looking at not using a wild card in the first 3 weeks!

he scored 3 goals but he hasn't played well in pre season and I think Conte will use him as a filler in whatever position needs him so he could be defensive one week, attacking the next and bench after that

Based on this articles advice I'm quite happy with

    Foster
    Valencia Stones VanDijk
    Hazard DeBruyne Deu Firmino
    Aguero Gray Carrol

With Carrol being my least sure.

Bench is Jaku Kante Friend Evans

Would probably wait till gameweek 3 to see gray's ability to cope up in the premier league...
Negredo is a better option with premier league experience and easy fixtures up until gameweek 5...

Exactly! I had Negredo initailly, then switched to Gray following the "trend" and based on 8 goals, but I don't exepct much from him against Liverpool and Chelsea, in the same time Negredo has a clear run of fixtures, and imo, has equal if not greater potential for goals

So here is my current team which is at odds with this article.....to say the least!

    Foster (Jak)
    Stones, Valencia, Friend/Evans (Amat)
    Mahrez, Firmino, Redmond, Gaston (Holdberg)
    Ibra, Kun, Costa

Covered the high ownership of Kun and Ibra, got 2 premium mids and a viable but cheap defence. A bit of a differential in Costa and 2 mids playing as potential strikers ie Firmino and Redmond.

So you're rotating foster and heaton based on what? home/away fixtures? They're good for save points and a surprise clean sheet, so you may as well use the same one consistently and save 0.5. Hence why jaku isn't actually being played, and people are backing foster for wba clean sheets and his saves, saving 0.5 in the process.

As you say you're just highlighting alternative ways in which to build a team, but this is all tit for tat really. You could have 3 premium attackers and mid range exciting midfielders, either way it's easy to downgrade non performing premiums. You have to just make a decision on which premium attackers/midfielders you want to start with and see how things pan out early on. (Obviously I'm going with Kun Ibra Vardy lol)

One things for certain in football, and that's GOALS! Don't waste money on an expensive defense, because they mainly get points for clean sheets (plus the odd goal or assist). Premium midfielders and attackers are here to score and assist every week! And these players will get you the points. I have 15 yes FPL experience. Take it

I totally disagree and think 3 heavy hitter up top is optimal to start the year at least.

Aguero- pens, nailed, essential when fit, captaincy option, top scorer in game
Ibra- maybe pens, huge ownership, nailed, capt option
    Vardy- pens, nailed, capt option
    Kane- pens, nailed, capt option
Sturridge- maybe pens, amazing when fit, nailed, capt option
    Lukaku- maybe pens, nailed

    Meanwhile...

Sanchez- not pens, shares set pieces
KDB- not pens, prone to rotation, shares set pieces
Hazard- maybe not pens, shares set pieces
    Mahrez- probably not pens
Ozil- not pens, shares set pieces, not capt option
Mane- not pens, unproven at club
Mkhitarian- not pens, unproven at club
Martial, not pens, sharing the load

    Also, cheap strikers...

Gray- hard to score in defensive side as lone striker (Kane and Vardy are NOT good comparables)
Wickham- shaky job security, not prolific, not pens
    Long- not pens, not prolific
    Austin- not nailed
    Llorente- just no
    Borini- nope
Wilson- could be good but bad starting fixtures
    Negredo- injury prone, defensive team

And finally, here is a list of 7.5-8.5m mids who have huge responsibility in their teams, lots of them take pens and most are nailed. All of these guys could score 170+ and be in touch with the top bracket mids.

    Firmino
    Coutinho
    Oscar
    Siggy
    Tadic
    Eriksen
    Alli
    Ayew
    Ramsey
    Pogba(?)
    Barkley

And then there are some great options 7m and under who could all score 150+

    Townsend
    Deulofeu
    Mirallas
    Bolasie
    Ramirez
    Redmond
    Feghouli
    Fischer
    Zaha

So all in all I'm very happy with 3 big hitters upfront and taking my pick of the bargain midfielders. I don't really see any of the premium mids as essential and a lot of them are just headaches. Just my take on it of course.
