In this series, I will be attempting to preview the Premier league action each weekend, with the articles being generally betting and/or stat based. This will look at key team news, an alternative captain, stat heaven and where to spend your cash. This article will get longer from next week as i’ll then be capable of reviewing the results of the previous gameweeks.
Key Team Issues
It’s fair to say Robert Huth will be a big miss at the back for Leicester as he continues to serves a suspension carried over from last year. In his 40 starts since joining the club, Leicester have averaged two points per game. Leicester conceded in all three of the matches Huth missed last season.
Moussa Dembele is another player serving a suspension in the opening weekend. In Spurs’ last 50 matches, Dembele has featured in 28 of them, and missed 22. In the 28 he featured, Spurs have averaged 2.1 points per game, compared to 1.4 points per game in the 22 he didn’t. Spurs also score more goals with him in the side (two goals per game compared to 1.36 goals per game without ) and concede less goals (0.68 goals per game compared to 1.5 goals per game without).
Per Mertesacker has missed 16 of Arsenal’s last 50 league matches and will be absent again this weekend, having been sidelined by a long-term injury. In the 16 matches without Mertesacker, Arsenal have averaged more goals per game, conceded less goals per game and gained more points per game, compared to the 34 of the last 50 that he has featured in.
Alternative Captain
Aguero and Ibrahimovic are the clear leaders of the FFScout Captain poll for the opening weekend, which comes as no huge surprise given their pedigree and the decent fixtures against Sunderland and Bournemouth respectively. An alternative captain to rival the big two this weekend is Andy Carroll away to Stamford Bridge. Only four teams conceded more headed goals than Chelsea last season. West Ham made a habit of upsetting the big sides last year, and who could forgoet their opening day win at the Emirates. The big man should be full of confidence after his pre-season brace against Juventus.
Stat Heaven
- Since their return to the top flight, Leicester are undefeated in nine of their 10 games against newly promoted sides.
- Spurs have been undefeated against Everton in the league since the 2012/13 season, while Everton have won just one of their 12 games against the top six in the past two seasons.
- Bournemouth conceded nearly two goals per game at home last season, and conceded 13 in six games against last year’s top six.
- Since the 2013-14 season, Southampton have kept 17 clean sheets in 30 home games against the bottom half.
- Sergio Aguero has scored three and provided two assists in his last three meetings with Sunderland in the Premier league.
- Swansea are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games played in the month of August.
