Arsene Wenger reveals Andre Santos could be sidelined for a while with an ankle injury. Andre Villas-Boas’ change of tactics left Frank Lampard out in the cold, while Brede Hangeland urges Martin Jol to settle on a consistent back-four:

With the Gunners already through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, Thomas Vermaelen and Andre Santos were the only two players to retain their places in the starting XI as Arsenal travelled to Olympiacos. While the 3-1 defeat proved ultimately insignificant, Arsene Wenger was left ruing his decision to play Santos; the left-back picked up an injury that could force a reshuffle of the Arsenal back-four over the next few weeks, according to his manager:

Santos suffered a bad ankle injury. He looks like he will be out for a while. We have Gibbs coming back in two to three weeks. Hopefully Santos will not be too long but, for Saturday against Everton, he looks to be short. We have as well Vermaelen who can play in his position.

Frank Lampard’s omission from the Chelsea first XI was the only change for Andre Villas-Boas in the Blues crucial clash with Valencia. A comfortable 3-0 stroll vindicated the Blues manager’s decision to replace Lampard with Raul Meireles, mirroring the same switch he made on the hour mark against Newcastle at the weekend. Villas-Boas’ comments after the match, where he admitted his side have altered their tactical approach of late and defended deeper, perhaps suggests he is looking for more energy from his midfielders. As a result Meireles, in addition to the continued first-team role of Oriol Romeu, is currently benefitting, but Villas-Boas made a point of praising Lampard’s contribution, admitting he is still central to his thoughts:

We made changes to the way we played. We tried it at Newcastle the other day. We kept our [defensive] block a little bit lower down the pitch – a medium/low compact block with not a lot of space between the lines. It worked quite well. Frank has been fantastic but our choice fell to those three midfielders because of their technical ability to keep possession, keep the ball down and play out from the back. Frank will continue to threaten for starting selection again. He is one of the greatest players in the world and for sure on Monday he will be in contention to come back.

Brede Hangeland reckons constant tinkering to the Fulham back-line is affecting the Cottagers form. Martin Jol has selected eight different defenders this term and Hangeland, the only ever-present, has begged his new manager for a more settled look to the defence in what has been a difficult debut season in charge at the Cottage for the Dutchman:

So far this season there’s been a lot of changes in the back four. I think I’ve played every league game but the other three positions have been changing quite a lot. Ideally you would like a back four that’s really settled and know each other well. Hopefully we can get that as soon as possible.

Alex McLeish has revealed he is less than optimistic over Jermaine Jenas’ prognosis after the midfielder limped out of last weekend’s game with Man United. Jenas lasted just over an hour and Big Eck has revealed that, as he is a loan player, it’s down to parent club Tottenham to examine and reveal the full extent of his injury:

I am bound by the fact Jermaine is not an Aston Villa player to reveal any news about him. We have left it in the hands of Tottenham and they will probably make a statement later on. So obviously it’s not good news. I think Jermaine has ruptured his Achilles and that will take some time to sort out.

Martin O’Neill has admitted he is willing to offer a clean slate to the Sunderland squad but hinted that changes are afoot ahead of next month’s transfer window. With just two wins from their first 14 fixtures, the Black Cats have been distinctly underwhelming this term and despite the number of summer acquisitions made by Steve Bruce, have failed to kick on from last season’s tenth place finish. Fantasy owners of Black Cats players could be left frustrated over the next few gameweeks, with O’Neill admitting he’s set to utilise the majority of his squad as he rapidly assesses the players:

There will be changes. I assume I will be using most of my senior players and they will have some sort of chance – some a better chance than others. We have a number of games and the Christmas period, which is not as congested as it used to be, but four games in quick succession, and I would imagine we will have to use a number of players over that period. We will see what develops. But it is going to take me a few weeks before I realise the abilities of the team and individuals, and perhaps the potential of one or two.

What do people thinking of transferring in Vermaelen after the Santos injury?

Could it actually improve his potential attacking returns if he does move to LB, or is he going to hang around at the back to shore up defences a bit more?

I think it makes little or no difference.

His attacking threat comes mainly from going up for set pieces and corners which he will continue to do as normal.

ok, just posted this on the previous post so here it is again

Ok, I’m, considering Schwarzer to replace Westwood rather than Howard, they both rotate well with Vorm

I am doing this because a) Schwarzer allows to me get Verm (I can give it 1 more week to see if Verm still has value at LB) without losing BAE and b) although he has DGW I think I’d be mad to pit him against VdV and Bale as someone loses out in that one.

I would argue with you that Howard is the better choice, but saw that Schwarzer is 4.9, that's an absolute bargain! As this allows you to get Verm as well, I'd say it's easily the better choice.

I can get Verm with Howard I'd just have to take BAE out rather than Brown to get him. Schwarzer is second highest scoring keep in game, has loads of saves and 6 CS, Howard has just 2 CS and most of his points have come from saving 2 pens. I didn't say Howard wasn't the better choice, just that I had reasons for looking elsewhere.

Too much to have in the bank I'd say.

      Ramsey -> Walcott

Then I'd swap any of your 3 cheap defenders out, Norwich defence don't get CS, and Wilkinson hasn't played too much either.

    Mata, Silva, Nani, Sessegnon, Dyer
    Sturridge, Adebayor, RvP.

Why? You have Mata & Nani to get rid of for Bale & Dvd for gw20. Sturr is enough cover for Chelsea.

Crazy to double up on Baines & howard, even for a double. Get Hibbert for 4.8m. Even that's crazy. It's usually the attackers that do well in a double(Dempsey 2010/11) and not the defenders.

Baines is considered an attacker though isn't he? He'll almost definately be too expensive anyway so Hibbert looks most likely. When do we get the Jan wildcard? Is it it straight after the DGW? Nani and Mata out may be getting out for them if so and then i'll redo my team after.

I'm gonna hate not having vDV or Bale against Sunderland but oh well.

Need to figure out what to do with Kompany aswell.

I would rate DVD playing both games for any length of time fairly low. My trigger finger is hovering to get him out fairly soon. Got more immediate concerns before that however.

As an ex-runner the only cure for my dodgy calf muscles was retirement from competition! Once you have had several tears you have scar tissue and once you have scar tissue you have a weakness which will tear again.

My fingers are always crossed for him but I think his hamstring will feature throughout the rest of his career.

Sad because such a wonderful player and a great role model.

Always looks a handful. Don't seem to remember him getting many hattricks though, if that is the case then he could be less likely than Ba or the Yak for the occasional meaty haul.

Apart from the next fixture WIG - the forthcoming fixtures dont really spell great potential to me.

Suarez is looking to be in all sorts of problems right now. Is it wise to replace him with Rooney (who is also in all sorts of problems right now) and make an altogether huge shift for -8?

Any Brown owners more confident of CS now O’Neil has arrived?

He was in my plans to get rid after this GW (home to ROVERS), but now I’m having 2nd thoughts and think with games coming up such as qpr, EVERTON, wigan, SWANSEA, NORWICH and the fact he’s only 4.5 makes sense to keep him right through to Winter WC time.

This, however, would mean getting shut of Kompany instead, but City seem intent on forfeiting CS and instead aiming to attack and just score more than the opposition.

Been thinking along similar lines. For 4.5 he's worth holding onto.

City aren't the same defensively as last year. A couple of lucky assists has kept Kompany's stock up but there are better options out there

Very nice point from Lord Trumpington, as a Yaya owner I find it quite pleasing.

    On Silva:

"Depends what you paid for him initially. If like me you had him from the start then those returns are ok for a 9.5 mid. Whether its considered acceptable at his current value of 10.5 is up for debate."

It's a good question. Ive also has him from the start and so won't be touching him as he is a season keeper for me.

That said I think his Initial form from the start is a little lacking at the mo. Also for that money you want another captaincy option and I'm not sure he currently fits the bill.

Silva: only failed to score/assist in 1 game this season when he's started (2 late sub appearances).

Yaya: started every match this season and has not scored/assisted in 7 of those. However of those 7, 5 came in the first 7 gameweeks, so could be showing increased consistency.

3m difference in price at the moment, if I were buying either and I didn't have them, I'd definitely go for Yaya.

I don´t have Silva and I think that by now, after his price went up more than 1M, isn´t worth to get(fixtures don´t help either), but this is completely different from RVP who´s price went up more than 1M too but his returns justify to pay the extra cash.

Depends if you want to pay the surplus 2.5-3mil for fixture-proof consistency.

It's when City score 1-2 goals per game against tougher opponents, Yaya is likely to suffer. Silva is the most likely to assist/score in City at the moment.

Anyone picked a week when their gonna use the January Wildcard?

GW21: Looks like an option purely to offload DGW players, particularly Everton ones, although they have ast, BLA the next 2 weeks but it depends if u have 3 Everton players whether u would keep them all. Spurs have WOL the week after the DGW so im guessing 3 Spurs players wouldnt be a bad idea. Might be worth getting some Villa players if their improving with SWA, EVE, wol, QPR etc from here onwards.

GW22: Might not be a bad time to get rid of at least some Man Utd coverage if youring doubling or trebling up. They have Bolton in GW21 but then ars, STO, chel, LIV after that which isnt great. Fulhams fixtures ease up then (arguably u could say they do the week before with bla) with NEW, WBA, city, STO, qpr, WOL etc so id say coverage looks like a good idea.

GW23: Not really a massive turn in fixtures from what i can see.

GW24: Obviously the latest possible time, gives u chance to see who people have signed which is always helpful.

    Thoughts?

Interesting, the Jan WC hasn't been in my thoughts recently, had been thinking I was gonna do it towards the end to look at new transfers. GW 22 seems to be my most favoured option out of those.

I would put money on Cahill going to Chelsea too, what with Alex's imminent departure.

Bit early to be discussing this but is it madness to captain Ba this coming game week?I have RVP but just have a feeling this game week could be the end of his scoring

End of rvps scoring. That's bollocks that! Vp doesn't have form he is either working or broken.

That said Ba is a good shout.

I'm going for Ba, I have only captained RVP once in his nice stretch and every week I say "he can't keep doing this".

Excellent performance from Chelsea last night, credit where it's due. Mata isn't making things easy this week! I was all set on bringing Nani in for Lampard. See what happens in tonights match i guess.

Getting Mata over Nani does mean i can get Christopher Lloyd Smalling in defence and double up on Utd.

Funny thing is, it's a definite possibility. If I do win, it will most likely be down to Rooney.

Or maybe X and Y, the two players I'm bringing in this week.

            Points hit or two free's?

The Rooney thing would be pretty damned funny!

Bellamy and Mata. Yeah good moves you've done there.

Bendtner and Ramires will take you down.
