Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning ruled Nemanja Vidic out for the season with a knee injury.

The United skipper was stretchered off in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat in Basel and the injury, admittedly, did look a nasty one to those watching on.

At this morning’s press conference ahead of the home clash with Wolves, Ferguson revealed:

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow.”

There’s no denying Vidic’s loss is a massive blow to United’s title challenge. A 6-1 defeat at home to neighbours City forced Ferguson to go back to basics in gameweek 10. A run of 4 clean sheets in the following five fixtures coincided with his captain’s return from a calf problem and despite scoring just a single goal in each of their last seven games, United have been able to stay within touching distance of City at the summit.

Their defensive form, allied with a favourable run of upcoming fixtures, has seen many draft in members of the United back line, with Phil Jones, in particular, seeing plenty of Fantasy investment. While faith in the United defence will have been somewhat diminished by this news and transfer plans adjusted, there will still be plenty willing to reconsider alternatives.

With Rio Ferdinand established as a regular in the heart of defence once again, Fantasy managers will be hoping Jonny Evans comes to the fore, given the Irishman’s 4.4 price. Vidic’s loss is likely to lessen their stability at the back to a certain degree and Evans, therefore, would not be much of a risk at that budget price. He played in nine of United’s first team fixtures, picking up four clean sheets.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also stand out, at 5.2 and 6.4 respectively, and offer more adaptability than Evans. Both have already played at right-back and centre half, with Jones’ central midfield duties also in his locker and may offer the greatest chance of game time over what is set to be a hectic festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What are people opinions on how Man U will be going forward?

Will they have to come out more as they will most likely have to score twice to win or are they actually incapable of high scoring because of the lack of quality central midfielders being fit and therefore has the last month been a SAF tactic of tighten up by choice?

Reason for asking is I have no Man U coverage and I'm contemplating Nani in for 4 points as their fixtures are insane.

This has really mind f*cked all week even before the Vidic injury

It all reminds me of a few seasons ago when Utd when on that crazy run of cleansheets but played a different defence in each game. I think they'll still keep a lot of clean sheets and that'll be the focus.

Lots of different defence line ups. Only safe pick is Evra then?

I guess but there are only 5 fit defenders so you have nice odds on the cheaper options. I personally would have Evans last on the list but Fergie seems to like him for some unknown reason.

    *tries again...

Should I go with a five man defence this week? 😕
    Vorm
    Baines, Vernaelen, Turner, Enrique, Boyata
    Silva, Bale
    RVP, Ba, Aguero

    Schwarzer, Drenthe, O’Hara, B Johnson.

Turner may not play anyway, Drenthe doubtful, O’Hara likes a long shot (De Gea)? BJ never does anything. No free transfers or money. Thanks

Yeah, there's four of them. Quite mental that those two "to me, to you" were actually the two best of the four. The two others (apparently also 'comedians', lol) aren't as good a those two. Mind. Blown.

Turner probably won't play. I would put Drenthe in and if he is injured/out of favour let your bench (O'hara) come on for him.

Can you see Baines getting anything at the Emirates?

Advice with a pun, I like it!

Anyone disagree with the advice? Would give me some cash to play with next week, and there's surely a good chance that Ba will outscore Aguero this week, especially if Aguero only gets 60 mins?

Not for the hit, even if Ba gets a goal and assist, one assist for Aguero nuetralises the transfer. Stick this GW, do it for free next.

With both Richards and Jones potential rotation risks over the festive period i want to get in a decent 4th choice CB just incase. Have 5.2 to spend, has to be Smalling for now right? And then maybe Heitinga/BAE for the DGW.

Average position maps are misleading when wingers switch sides for periods of the game as Bale and Lennon have been doing.

Very good article. Perhaps we have to give Redknapp some credit for instructing him to come inside more often, and to switch wings with Lennon more frequently.

From memory, all of Lennon's goals recently have come when he's been out on the left.

I disagree with Droopy. Every time I've watched Bale/Lennon in switch positions it seems to do neither any real favours. Lennon is a one-trick pony, always goes on his stronger right foot, so he's predictable whichever wing he plays on and must rely on pace alone to get to the ball first. That being the case, he's far more effective on the right, going outside FB and attempting to cross or cut back balls to penalty spot.

As for Bale, how many times has he ripped a RB into pieces? Many. But again, switch him left, he tends to drift inside, which neutralises his pace (because midfield is packed) and he seldom is able to go outside a LB and cross (his right foot is actually quite weak.

In principle, I like the idea of two speedy wide players capable of switching wings to thrown FBs off balance, but in Bale case, it works only sometimes, and in Lennon's hardly ever.

That's my take having watched Tottenham a lot.

Jack Rodwell and Leon Osman (hamstring) are both likely to miss the trip to Arsenal. Louis Saha (thigh) could return. Royston Drenthe (foot) should also travel.

Might be a stupid question. But does anyone know the exact wildcard rules? Never been in the situation with mine left going in to January 🙂

Can I use the January WC and then use the other one in the spring? Or is the January WC just for the ones that already used there?

Everyone gets one WC that they can use whenever they like, and one that they can use during the January transfer window only. If you haven't used either and you use one in the January window it will automatically use the "january window only" one.

Welbeck for the next 5 games... Discuss.

On paper, Welbeck for the next 5 and then Welbeck > Adebayor looks quite tempting. Just wondering what the rest of you think.

I'm unlikely to do it, as it's risky. United aren't scoring and with both Nani/Young being able to play central, Welbeck may not be nailed on, but it's a pondering though.

Welbeck for: WOLVES qpr Fulham WIGAN ROVERS

Adebayor then comes in for: (WBA EVERTON) WOLVES Man City WIGAN

Still, it's so massive that players will surely have to be rested long in advance, so they are 100% fit and fresh for it.

Welbeck's just coming back from injury, although hopefully (from a Man Utd fan's point of view) he'll be fit enough to last 90 mins at the weekend. If he'd started on Wednesday I was going to bring him in, but in the end I've brought in Adebayor this week instead.

Yeah I currently have Ade RVP Sturridge and I've thought for a while now that those 3 are the best front 3 to have if you wish to use transfers elsewhere in your team, I guess it's just something that looks a decent idea, assuming of course Welbeck plays his fixtures and does as well as one would expect against them.
